Te Atatu AFC Newsletter; Issue 2; 12/04/2019

Welcome to the second edition of the Te Atatu Newsletter. A big thank you to all Managers and Players who contributed this week especially since the season has kicked off in earnest meaning more tired bodies, more after match celebrations or commiserations, and less time to spend writing reports. Also welcome to a side brand new to the club, the NFF 6th Div Birthday Boys who announced their arrival beating Norwest 3-0, with wins also to Men’s First & Reserves, Both Over 35’s and our Women’s Div 1. Thank you as well to the Red Boats for sponsoring the Ladies Fundraiser, Friday the 12th. Hope a great time is had by all and awesome to see the TAT Community get together to support a squad that is the most passionate fans, biggest drinkers, and heartiest competitors!

About Te Atatu AFC Who we are: Te Atatu Association Football Club is known as a club with a warm and welcoming environment and we offer opportunities to youngsters to play football at all levels and provide a pathway through into senior football through our development program for those that wish to play at the highest level. We also ensure that others that play sport for the enjoyment of doing so are also assured of a team in which to play at our club. The club has a no exceptions policy and offers opportunities for everyone.

What we do: The club embraces the New Zealand Football “Whole of Football” plan through our program which has 180 youngsters participating aged from five years to eight years. The introduction of Whole of Football has proved very popular with parents and children alike. Te Atatu Association Football Club is a club run by a small group of volunteers. We are all enthusiastic and devote as much of our own time to the club as possible. However, all Executive Members have their own full time employment and family activities to fit in around the football club.

AFF/NFF Conference Men’s First Team: The first game of any season is always special, there’s a buzz of anticipation from players, managers and supporters alike. Last weekend’s trip to Warkworth provided a really positive start to the 2019 season for Te Atatu AFC. The First team overcame an early deficit to win 2-1. Talk about leaving it late to grab the winner though, Dan Gates 94th minute goal was a real late, late show. Congrats to the entire squad for playing till the absolute final whistle, it’s always good to start the season on a winning note. Last time I saw so many happy faces was when Rhys Caples offered to buy a round of drinks! Finally, a big thanks to the Reserves for staying throughout the match and supporting the First Team, that’s what club spirit is all about. This weekend we welcome our West Auckland neighbours Glen Eden and their supporters. They are a well drilled and balanced side and we enjoyed our preseason game with them. Local derbies are what conference football is all about and we look forward to an exciting encounter today. To both sets of supporters enjoy the game and you are all welcome back in the clubhouse afterwards to enjoy our club’s hospitality and sportsmanship. Who knows Rhys might even release a few moths and open his wallet again? Yours in Football SIDELINER

Andy Dalton curled a superb equalising free kick just before halftime that could have had honey on it, it was so sweet.

AFF/NFF Conference Men’s Reserves:

PLAYER OF THE DAY WENT TO YOUNG HUNTER WISNESKI WHO HAS ABSOLUTELY BEEN A SHINING LIGHT THROUGH PRE-SEASON AND IS CEMENTING HIMSELF AS ONE FOR THE CLUBS FUTURE. KIRKS 4 GOALS I HOPE ARE JUST THE START

OF A GOLDEN BOOT BID THIS YEAR, HIS ATTITUDE THIS PRE-SEASON HAS BEEN AWESOME, HAS A COACHABLE ATTITUDE AND I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING MORE WITH HIM AND SEEING HIM CONTINUE IN THIS VAIN.

A good start to the reserves season with a 7-3 win first up. The first half was played in heavy rain which actually made it easy to play the ball on the deck, and thankfully we did that. The near perfect first 25 minutes which saw us tear them apart and score 4 early. A early hat trick to Kirk Chapman who deserved nothing less after a pre-season of taking in all information and working hard on his craft. Campbell Batt adding the fourth with a composed finish. I decided at 4nil up to make four changes and aided by a ref who maybe felt compassion towards Warkworth. They scored 3 before the half one of which was a cracker to their credit. We knew it was up to us to make amends and to the boys’ credit we went out and simplified things and took the game away from them keeping a clean sheet in the second half and giving everyone a run, in moderation, and without pressure. Another goal to Kirk from the penalty spot, and Ricky and Adam chimed in with a strike each to seal the 7-3 victory. Big thanks to Kathy who ran our line in the rain, it was greatly appreciated. The boys have shown the great desire and commitment to make this a great season on and off the pitch and I cant wait to see how we develop as a team and as individuals. Loving every minute of it.

NFF Women’s Division 1: With a number of players away this week we were fortunate to have some of the Reserve players step up, as well as 2 of our youth players. The first half saw a fairly even match up, with the girls focusing on moving the ball around to tire a sub less Norwest side. The second half saw a superb goal from a free kick to Bronwyn Caples and after absorbing some pressure from Norwest, a thrilling one-on-one goal for Ang Byrne. With an injured bench the girls fought to keep Norwest goalless until the final whistle. Our super subs from the youth sides (Kelsi Ward and Frieda Davis Barr) slotted right into place for a solid game against a fast attack. As Coach Karl mentioned after the match, a key word to describe the game was “character”. The girls played with heart and played for one another. Next we look to focus on a tough match up against Birkenhead, who won their first game 9-3

We kicked off the 2019 season with a tough game against Norwest. This was an especially important game for the girls as it is our new recruits Ang Byrne’s old club and Wyllowe Poata’s sister.

Te Atatu AFC Newsletter; Issue 2; 12/04/2019

NFF Women’s Division 2: First game of the season was away to Takapuna where some surprises were in-store for the team. Firstly, Jamye Jackson was on time with the kit (on time for her), the Takapuna ‘Social’ team was actually a development team, and we only had one sub due to some late withdrawals. Although the final score was 5-0, it didn’t reflect the full 90 minutes as the Takapuna team came out firing and 4 goals were scored in the first 30 minutes. Their positional play was proving effective against our ladies and the game was set up to potentially be a real blow to morale. Unfortunately for Takapuna’s goal difference, our ladies came out in the second half determined to bring some positive momentum into the next game and only one unlucky goal was scored by the home side in the second half. The fight and effort in the second half bode well for the season with some combinations and creative play coming to the fore.

Player of the day was Telana for running herself into the ground (and only falling over 13 times). Special mentions to Kelly for volunteering to go in goal and making some great saves (including a triple save), and new player Muna for playing as though she’d always been there.

Men’s NFF 6th Div-Te Atatu Birthday Boys The Birthday Boys are a new team to Te Atatu AFC competing in Division 6, having migrated over from the AFF after a successful season at Western Springs AFC. After a good month of pre-season, the BB’s first game was a trip up the SH16 to face Norwest United M6. Coming up against a young and well-organized side, it took the best part of 20 minutes for the BB’s to settle into the game. Norwest took advantage of one or two lapses of concentration to nearly break the deadlock, but once the BB’s grew into the game, they capitalized with an excellent first half finish from Ash Burton that swung the game in the orange men’s favour. Taking a 1-0 lead into the 2nd half, the BB’s grew in confidence and started putting the foot on the gas, with Jack Alexander nodding in at the back post after a looping cross from the left caught the keeper off guard. The win was put beyond doubt when player/coach Mark McKeown fired one low into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 and a thoroughly hard fought and deserved win for the Birthday Boys.

COACH MARK MCKEOWN SAID “WE’VE MANAGED TO KEEP THE CORE OF THE TEAM FROM LAST SEASON, AND I FEEL THAT THE PLAYERS WE’VE BROUGHT IN HAVE ONLY STRENGTHENED US EVEN FURTHER AND WE SAW THAT TODAY. I WAS ESPECIALLY PLEASED WITH HOW QUICKLY THE NEW FELLAS PICKED UP OUR PHILOSOPHY AND EXECUTED THE PLAN SO WELL.

THIS WAS MOSTLY DOWN TO A GOOD MONTH OF PRE-SEASON TRAINING AND THREE GAMES WHICH WERE VERY PURPOSELY ARRANGED AGAINST MUCH STRONGER OPPOSITION. A 3-0 AWAY WIN COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A BETTER WAY TO START THE SEASON AND WE’RE ITCHING TO GET BACK OUT THERE NEXT WEEK ALREADY”.

Te Atatu AFC Newsletter; Issue 2; 12/04/2019

Men’s NFF 6th Div-Te Atatu Birthday Boys On joining Te Atatu AFC, “We had a great season last year in the AFF, but there was a desire amongst the lads to join a smaller, more family orientated club where we could really feel a part of the community and the culture. Since moving over, Dave, Wendy and Kathy have been so welcoming and we’re looking forward to our first home game of the season so that the entire team can get to know the club…and get to know the bar as well!” The Birthday Boys are on the road again next week and will have their work cut out for them as they face North Shore United who banged in 10 goals against their opposition in the opening game.

Mens o35 Div 2: Footy Westerlies

On a perfect day for football the Mighty Westerlies played the Albany Undertakers in what was expected to be an even first round match. The number one pitch at Tat Park was in great shape as where the athletes. Within the first ten minutes of kick off the Westerlies showed that their hard work in the off season was about to pay off as they moved the ball around the park with ease to create chances on goal. It took only 15 minutes for the Westerlies hunter/ gatherer Luke Wilson to side foot an easy first goal from a Heath cross. Whitey was next to benefit from a Heath cross putting a screamer in the top corner, Whitey then picked up second by cleaning up a solid KV shot. Our hunter/ gatherer then put the final goal of the half away with a perfect header off a Heath corner. After the half, the boys came out firing on all cylinders with many more opportunities only for KV, Aalbers and Nemeia to squander sitters in front of goal. Heath picked up a sensational volley from a well waited Aalbers cross, Chris Trehy put the final nail in the undertaker’s coffin with a well-placed (slowest goal ever) from a set piece just outside the 18-yard box.

THE FINAL RESULT, A 6-0 WIN TO KICK OFF THE SEASON. THANK YOU TO

CIAREY FOR ORGANISING/ HERDING THE SQUAD AND KV FOR BEING THE MATCH DAY CAPTAIN.

Te Atatu AFC Newsletter; Issue 2; 12/04/2019

Player Profiles: Footy Westerlies Peter Batt- Life member and bionic goal keeper. Lloyd Evans- Two first names and some dodgy calf’s is what he offers. Ciarey Haggo- When not fishing, supplies some much-needed speed to an aging backline. Bevan Verryt- Coming off winning golden boot for the senior club in 2018, looks good for a few in 2019. Chris Aalbers- Known as the one-man wrecking ball, trains well, hoping to see the results on the pitch in 2019. Blair White- Coming into his second football season at the ripe age of 41, noted for greatest over celebration of a goal and snipper issues in 2018. Heath Rainey- The epitome of health and an athlete, returns to woo the ladies in 2019. Luke Wilson- The gumboot wearing hunter/ gatherer of the team. Chris Trehy- bringing back his silky footwork after 2 years of sharing his skills with youth squads. Ray Park- He shots, he scores, he eats your Labradors. The stable centre of the park.

This week we focus on Welsh Pete. Moving with his wife Jodie to New Zealand in 2013, Pete has made it his mission to take up New Zealand culture as you can see in the picture. Pete is playing his third season for the Westerlies, he brings with him grit to win and a natural ability to not pass others the ball (while expecting all to pass to him when in front of goal). If his calf’s (which are as solid as the legs on the barbie) could hold up to a full season he would be a goal scoring machine in the over 35’s league.

Player Profiles cont’d: Footy Westerlies

James Stacey- In his first season but with a Brazilian wife, much is expected Gregor Muller- A non-playing member of the 2019 squad who brings his shower gear weekly. Lee Shaw- Known for his hard-hitting defence, hopefully we see him as much as the fish do. Anton Mitchell- Another two first names kind of guy and pace to burn. Jeff Chung- The only real tradey in the team, on the tools & works a full week. Dave Caples- Chairman, life member & longest member of Tat football club. Tony Nemaia- Provides the humour from the back and delves into public relations with any team that we come across. Troy Thomson- Like any good plumber, will stop us leaking goals through the back line. Kieran Verryt- Know as ‘Mr Glass’. When in the country will support the midfield well. Kev ‘Hobbit’ Gilmore- Still hasn’t arrived in our team, much be on another unexpected journey.

The Chatham Cup is contested by teams from throughout New Zealand, and has been held annually since 1923 with the exception of 1937 and 1941–44. Typically, between 120 and 150 teams take part, with extra time and penalty shoot-outs used to decide matches which end in ties. In the past, replays were used, and in the early years of the competition the number of corners won during a game decided tied matches. The cup itself was gifted to the then New Zealand Football Association in 1922 by the crew of HMS Chatham as a token of appreciation for the hospitality they had encountered on a visit to New Zealand. The actual trophy is modelled on the FA Cup.

Early Rosie White goal gives Football Ferns confidence-boosting win over Norway An early goal to Rosie White was enough to give the Football Ferns a confidence-boosting win over Norway in Spain on Wednesday [NZ time]. The experienced striker scored in the fifth minute of her 99th international to set up the 1-0 win, the Ferns' first over a team higher on the Fifa rankings since November 2015 and their second over Norway in seven meetings. Coach Tom Sermanni set the team up to play with a back three, placing Abby Erceg in the heart of the defence, where she, Anna Green, Meikayla Moore, and Rebekah Stott, who replaced Green at halftime, all made crucial interventions. Midfielder Caroline Graham Hansen was a constant threat for Norway throughout the second half, sending several attempts wide of Erin Nayler's goal. Nayler was only forced to make one save as world No 12 Norway chased the game, pushing a tame effort from Guro Reiten wide in the 82nd minute to keep the No 19-ranked Ferns in front. The Kiwis' best chance to double their lead had come with 20 minutes to play, when Betsy Hassett sent a shot from a Katie Bowen cross straight at the Norway keeper. White was alert early on, pouncing to score her 24th international goal when Norway defender Maria Thorisdottir tried to head a dangerous ball back to her keeper, but failed to get enough on it. The last time the Ferns won against a higher-ranked opponent was in November 2015, when they went to Brazil and won 1-0. This win will serve as a sign they are on the right track ahead of the Women's World Cup in France in June. They are next in action in midMay, when they play the United States as they start their final preparations for the game's showpiece event
