MEN'S FIRSTS TE ATATU 2:4 PAPATOETOE

Despite dominating possession and territory in the first half we only went to the break 1-0 up, courtesy of a Rhys Caples penalty. A highlight of the first half was our ability to deal with all of Papatoetoes attacks by reading the play, being in the right place and clearing our lines when required. Unfortunately, we didn't maintain these standards during the second half. A poor twenty minute spell sealed our fate in this game. A bad clearance, letting their midfield waltz straight through our backline, giving away a penalty and not dealing with a cross saw us concede 4 sloppy goals. Joel got on the scoresheet for us and Haggo gave a polished performance in the midfield. On to next week and the Cup!

MEN'S RESERVES

TE ATATU 3:1 PAPATOETOE

Top of the table clash saw Papatoetoe welcomed our ressie boys to Murdoch park which didn't look to flash after the rain, but held up quite brilliantly. Some good attacking play from the get go saw Te Atatu almost break free a couple times through Lome and Rueban on the wing with Campbell dropping into space very well. Almost all papatoetoe attacks were snuffed out brilliantly by Connor Gillanders Although once again our boys went down first, some slick moves from the Papatoetoe winger saw him put in a powerful low cross and Chadley who couldn't quite get his footing right put it into the top corner of his own net. Straight back into it our boys peppered the Papatoetoe Defence and from a resulting corner, the ball sat up nicely for Adam Bradley to strike a venomous shot of the post and into the path of Campbell to finish from half a yard out. Some tireless work from the midfield trio of Austin Nirav and Hummels kept Papatoetoe at bay for the remainder of the first half whilst creating a few half chances for us to shoot from range. half time and 1-1. As the second half proceeded Te Atatu mounted pressure and their high press worked wonders as time and time again we won the ball up high in the field, unable to convert though. Some good counter attacks saw Papatoetoe come close a few times but substitute Stu held strong. A few more substitutions, to give a lease of life to our brilliant midfield on the day saw Mene Nokisi come on a change the game. From a looping corner taken by Austin, he managed to sneak his right foot in to hit the ball just hard enough to roll through a barrage of player, through Campbell batts legs, and into the bottom corner. Chasing the game Papatoetoe left massive holes in the midfield and defence for Te Atatu to exploit and we once again came very close after Ethan struck the crossbar from a curling free kick. Just moments later Mene was at it again rising highest from another Austin corner to put our boys 3-1 up and that was to be the game. 3 corners, 3 goals and 3 more points for our boys who go clear at the top of the table, just waiting on delayed fixtures to determine whether they stay there or not. Onto the cup quarter final and we're hoping for another strong performance to put us through to the semis

WOMENS DIVISON 3

TE ATATU 2:0 NORTHERN ROVERS The third division ladies team headed out to Glenfield on Sunday to play Northern Rovers with reduced numbers due to injury, illness and other commitments. While we only had one sub available, we stamped our dominance on the game right from kickoff and put Rovers under long periods of pressure in their own half. Our attacking efforts from last week continued with a lot of ball being fed through to our front three, forcing several corners and a huge number of goal kicks. With about 10 minutes to go in the first half, we capitalised on one of our attacking corners to take the lead 1-0 thanks to Danielle Somers getting a head onto Jo Leslie's corner and finding the back of the net. We went into the second half up 1-0 with a lot of work still to do. We'd had a huge number of unsuccessful shots on goal and needed to go back to basics and concentrate on our passing game. This focus on passing led to our second goal courtesy of Emz Reading who sent a through ball to Elo Amaral, who slotted it past the keeper to make it 2-0. With no subs available for much of the second half due to an injury, the team fought hard and dug in to protect our lead and close out the game 2-0. This a really positive result for our team and it puts us clear at second place on the table, as we head into a top of the table clash with Puhoi at home next weekend. Big thanks to Telana and Cilla who covered a half each in goal, and Emz Reading was our player of the day.

WOMENS DIVISON 4

TE ATATU 4:2 ORATIA

This week we faced Oratia at home on a stunning blue-sky day after a week of rain. Oratia put up a good fight, but let Amie slip the first one into the net at 22 minutes. Our next goal came from an interesting move from the keeper where she threw the ball back into play after catching it to avoid a corner. Amie once again got a boot on it and tapped it into the goal. The opposition put two goals on the board to level the game at 2-0. Strong play through the midfield saw flurry of goal-scoring action in the last quarter of the game with Shannon and Amie putting two more in the net. After what felt like hundreds of shots at goal we came away with a 4-2 win. Player of the day went to Pam for her hard work on the wing. Big thank you to Sonia for playing in goal so Pam could be “allowed out of her box” for a full game. Kai this week was pizza and garlic bread with the Oratia crew who stuck round for a while supporting the club. We’re looking forward to seeing Shiv make her goal keeper debut against Ranui in our next game, however there are some conditions that she has laid out – the team needs to be up by six with only 10 minutes to go. So with that in mind #scoreforshiv is the focus for this week.

BB'S

DIVISION 6

2022| ISSUE 10

BB'S 7-1 PUHOI The BBs finally made their season debut at Neil Ave in the last game of the first half of the season. Looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss last week the BBs were out to make a statement against one of the lower teams in the league. The BBs started out well, controlling the game and forcing Puhoi to play predominantly on the counter. A throw in taken quickly in the attacking third set Dom loose in the box to put the BBs ahead. A trademark burst of pace on the counter from Brandon resulted in another tidy finish from Dom to have the BBs two nil up at half time. Not often being a team to run up the score, the BBs looked at this game as a great game to improve their goal difference and push hard into the back half of the season. Nicholas started the push as he expertly guided a free kick under the wall and into the bottom corner. This opened the floodgates as Puhoi heads dropped. The next three goals must have all been so good that there wasn’t enough space for them in this writer’s brain. Despite conceding an unfortunate goal at 6-0 up, Dom delightfully dinked the ball over the keeper for Nicholas to knock home to make a final score of 7-1 to send the Wolfpack on the long trip back to Puhoi with their tails between their legs. MotM: Nicholas – One of the great new recruits to the BBs this season especially since his move into central midfield. While there were plenty of great performances across the park, Nicholas’ play picking up the ball in midfield and encouraging crisp short passing really opened Puhoi up and set the BBs on the way to a big win chipping in with two goals himself. His never say die attitude in being livid at conceding even while six goals up makes me certain this will be the first of many MotM awards for Nicholas
