Annual Review & Directory 2011

10 Members’ Classification 12 Members’ Directory

Introduction Our Annual Review and Directory summarises the last 12 months’ activity and puts forward our goals for the year ahead. This edition marks the beginning of the publishing year for the MediWales Review, which features information about our member companies and key life science industry developments. The Review has two main functions: it provides our readers with up-to-date information about our diverse and growing sector and offers a platform for organisations within Wales to promote their products and services. If you have a product, project, or research activity that you would like us to write about, please get in touch. We look forward to hearing from you. Jess Fisher Editor

The Benefits of Promotion MediWales has been a hive of activity over the past year and we’re delighted to tell our members how we’ve been representing them. Since “Economic Renewal: A New Direction” was published last summer, within the Welsh Government a new Department for Business, Enterprise and Technology has emerged. MediWales has been building relationships within this department’s Life Sciences team to ensure our members’ interests remain at the forefront of their activity. Our aim is to remain the voice of Welsh life science industry and point of contact for members in this new political landscape, in order to support continued growth and collaboration. Building on this heightened need to represent our members, in March 2011 we launched our new MediWales website. The new look and feel reflects our step up in promoting members’ innovations through our daily updated News page. We are encouraging all members to send us their press releases and news items to be published online and ‘tweeted’ through our MediWales Twitter account. In addition, our Opportunities page lists all funding calls; competitions; requests for speakers, case studies, collaborators; and recruitment, R&D, skills and training, and networking opportunities within Wales, nationally and internationally for members and the wider Life Sciences sector to take advantage of. Our Events page lists all MediWales events and external events from national bodies such as The Technology Strategy Board, including the HealthTech and Medicines KTN, UK Trade & Investment, and from our regional Medilink UK partners. We update these pages daily so that members can keep abreast of current sector developments and plan their yearly events calendars. MediWales is not only representing its members’ interests in Wales. Debbie and Jess from our team attended IBIZ and the NHS Expo in London in March 2011 to learn more about the restructuring of the NHS in England and promote our members to a UK audience.

Promoting Welsh members on a UK platform is supported through the UK Lifescience Industry magazine. This publication is produced by MediWales on behalf of Medilink UK – a network of regionally based organisations working to grow the economic impact of UK Life Sciences. Within this magazine, sector wide issues are discussed and commented on by Life Science experts, clusters of excellence are represented, and the best innovations across the UK are reviewed. This year, winners of three of our 2010 MediWales Innovation Awards went on to become finalists at the Medilink UK Awards, with Chromogenex Ltd winning the national Export Award. Our members were able to promote their innovations to the other Medilink organisations and the winners presented to a national audience through an allotted slot at the UKTI IBIZ conference. Looking internationally, in November last year MediWales attended the Medica trade show in Dusseldorf alongside the Welsh mission - organised by the Welsh Government - and produced the accompanying Medica Special magazine, showcasing these delegate companies. At the Arab Health trade show in Dubai in January, MediWales organised for member MedaPhor and Flexicare Medical to meet with Lord Darzi during his tour of the exhibition, highlighting the innovative medical technologies Wales has to offer. Following from the shift in structure within the Welsh Government from geographicallyfocused to sector-specific departments, MediWales is pleased to be working with the new Life Sciences team, having briefed them on the sector, its needs and opportunities. Advising this life sciences team on their strategy will be the newly established Life Sciences Sector Panel headed up by biotech entrepreneur Professor Sir Christopher Evans. A truly significant development for MediWales, our Forum Manager Gwyn Tudor was selected to join this panel providing a direct means to convey industry needs to decision makers. The Life Science sector’s new priority status in Wales has sparked off several interesting developments. For instance, the Chief Scientific

Advisor is writing a new science policy for Wales. Through engagement with his office, MediWales is able to put forward Welsh Industry’s case to be reflected in the policy. In the spirit of building relationships, MediWales is continuing to collaborate with the National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR). In the past year MediWales has been invited to sit on both NISCHR’s advisory Board and Academic Health Science Collaboration (AHSC) panel to assist with the development of the AHSC strategy to represent an industry perspective. Through our excellent relationship with NISCHR, we can access the appropriate channels to source the right clinical expertise relevant to our membership’s needs. This alliance ties in well with our clinical access agenda, in which we have held several events to discuss, among several issues, medical device manufacturers accessing clinical expertise in order to bring innovations to market. To give a potted history of this clinical access agenda, over two years ago the MediWales membership collectively identified access to clinical expertise as a key factor that would help them survive the economic down turn. MediWales responded by inviting academics, businesses and clinicians (ABC) to a series of meetings in order to discuss these stakeholders’ needs and the barriers that prevent successful collaborations. To date, several of the assisted organisations through this initiative have had successes, illustrating the potential solutions for the wider membership. For instance, Huntleigh Healthcare have successfully worked with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s Podiatry Department to develop the Dopplex ABIlity product – a device to accurately measure the ankle brachial index (ABI) – a quick and efficient way to detect peripheral arterial disease in a broad range of patients. Flexicare have worked with Professor Judith Hall from Cardiff University’s School of Medicine to design and develop the Hall Lock a simple but highly effective system to prevent drugs being accidentally administered via the wrong route, which can prove fatal.

Annual Review & Directory 2011

This year we’ve continued to engage with other networks such as the Welsh Wound Network and the new ehi2 Innovation Centre at Swansea ILS to support the growth of these special interest groups, in order to provide our membership with additional opportunities and support. As the financial year came to a close, MediWales delivered the speaker programme for BioWales – a 400 person conference bringing both Welsh and UK-wide speakers onto a distinctly Welsh platform. Held at the Vale Hotel just outside of Cardiff, the impressive line-up of speakers included Wales’ Chief Scientific Adviser Prof. John Harries, who claimed there was “true world class work taking place in Wales where health and life sciences are seen as a great strength.”

Professor Paul Davis, Chief Scientific Officer of Mologic and innovator of the Clearblue pregnancy test discussed “The Birth of the Modern Pregnancy Test and Diagnostic Technology”. He said: “Many of the most relevant sustaining technologies and advances are in Wales, such as Ig-Innovations sheep antibody capability and BBI’s immunodiagnostic development capability in Cardiff, in addition to various technologies being developed in the Welsh universities, where there are numerous opportunities for partnership. The Welsh Government is good at promoting and supporting such collaborations.” This year BioWales introduced a Digital Health session, signalling the growth of this sub-sector. David Ford, Head of the new e-health Industries Innovation Centre in Swansea, opened the

session explaining how the centre has made Wales a pioneer in e-health support. The MediWales team were lucky enough to have an introduction to Lesley Griffiths, the new Health and Social Sciences Minister as of 13th May 2011, to discuss the priorities of the sector in Wales and put forward members’ concerns. Now, just into the new financial year, MediWales has recently held its second Welsh Life Science Advisory Group made up of experts within academia, business, clinical and procurement environments to advise MediWales on sector-leading issues to take forward. This last meeting identified the need for a comprehensive stakeholder navigational tool, to help these stakeholders collaborate successfully in future. MediWales is working hard to take this forward.

Events Preview MediWales’ Innovation Awards Dinner 2011 In its sixth consecutive year, our annual Awards dinner has become a key highlight in MediWales’ events calendar. The evening celebrates our members’ endeavours and achievements, showcasing best practice and the latest medical innovations. Application forms for the 2011 Awards will go out at the beginning of September, with judging taking place in early November. Winners, who will be announced at the dinner in December, will automatically qualify for the Medilink UK National Health Technology Awards, where earlier this year MediWales member Chromogenex won the National Export Award.

MediWales’ Promotional Network Through the brand new website and e-shot newsletter launched in March 2011, MediWales is promoting more events to a wider audience than ever before. MediWales has joined LinkedIn, and is ‘Tweeting’ promotions of both internal and external events within Wales, the UK and internationally, keeping you up to date with the latest in life sciences.

MediWales’ Core Seminars Each of our forthcoming seminars will focus on current topics or areas of interest for the life sciences sector. The content and style of these seminars are influenced by requests from the membership and the regional and national networks which we work with.

Research in the School of Chemistry at Bangor University has a reputation for excellence and covers a wide range of multidisciplinary areas including nanomaterials, sensors for drugs and explosives, molecular electronics, biological chemistry, polymer chemistry, heterocyclic and carbohydrate chemistry and other synthetic chemistry. A significant proportion of our current research is at the life science interface. For example, we have been developing therapeutic biomolecules and biomacromolecules as intrinsic drugs and/or as carriers/devices for drug delivery and tissue engineering. These include the development of synthetic mycolic acids as potential therapeutic agents in the treatment of asthma and TB, the development of carbohydrate based anti-adhesives as antibiotic-alternatives, and the development of smart photocrosslinkable copolymers as injectable hydrogel materials for drug delivery and wound healing. In addition, our experimental and computational modeling studies on biological interactions and reactions are aimed at deepening the understanding of the underpinning mechanisms on a molecular level, which eventually allows a more rational design and development of pharmaceuticals. We also work on the development of synthetic approaches towards marine natural products with extensive biological activity including potential anti-cancer and anti-viral applications.

The Haemair mission is to produce respiratory aids. These range from devices that support respiration for patients with deficient lungs - via an easily reversible fully external device - to a prosthetic device that may replace human lungs. The basis of the device is a blood/air mass exchanger. This exchanger takes carbon dioxide from the blood and transfers oxygen into the blood. It is compact, portable and suitable for conscious, active patients. The devices are aimed at both acute and chronic lung conditions. In Europe and N. America alone, our device offers hope to over a million people per year who currently die of lung disease or damage. Unlike most conventional treatments for lung deficiency, the devices do not use the lungs; thus they allow deficient lungs to rest and recover, rather than forcing damaged lungs to work harder through mechanically supported breathing. Ultimately our patients should be allowed home.
