Welsh Government- supporting international trade The Welsh Government Life Sciences international trade programme in 2012/13 was extremely successful providing support for over 100 delegates who represented over a fifth of all Welsh Life Sciences businesses. Medica 2013 was the largest ever Welsh Government delegation and 2014 looks set to match that.

UK Trade Support UK Trade and Investment also has a comprehensive programme of trade missions and trade shows. An extensive support for international trade activities is on offer for 2014/15 from Welsh Government, UKTI and ABHI. MediWales and other support organisations will circulate this information throughout the year. Different levels of subsidy or support are available depending on the event, the level of international trade experience which the company already has and the size and location of the company. For full details of both Welsh Government and UKTI supported missions please refer to our calendar at the rear of this directory.

Addressing areas of Unmet Clinical Need: A £4million Welsh Wound Innovation Centre of excellence in wound prevention and treatment has been established in Wales with the dual aim of delivering health and wealth benefits for people in Wales. The Welsh Wound Innovation Centre has a strong commercial focus on job creation and business as well as the delivery of a full range of clinical research and knowledge transfer services to the NHS and commercial customers.

Swansea-based Acuitas Medical is currently in the final stages of product development of a proprietary Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) based technique – Fine Structural Analysis (fineSA™). Extensive human and animal studies have demonstrated that fineSA will identify non-invasively early changes in anatomical structures which may be associated with the early stages of disease. fineSA is expected to provide an entirely new method in diagnostic imaging, providing information on anatomical scales that cannot be visualized with existing in-vivo methods. fineSA data can be acquired in as little as 15 seconds and can be readily installed on any MRI imaging system, without modifications or additional hardware.

Asalus was established in 2009 to commercialise the inventions arising from the Wales Institute of Minimal Access Technology (WIMAT) in Cardiff. WIMAT is a leading UK centre for training of laparoscopic and other surgical disciplines. Having access to both highly experienced key opinion leaders and new trainees places WIMAT in a privileged position to receive feedback on modern surgical techniques. Asalus works with WIMAT and its network to identify issues with these procedures and potential solutions for them. Asalus then rapidly prototypes medical devices and tests whether or not the devices are capable of addressing these issues. Prototypes that successfully pass this decision point then enter full development. The company has strong relationships with a broad network of product development partners that allow it to take forward a wide range of mechanical and electrical product concepts. Through its network of contacts within global medical device companies and distributors, Asalus is ideally placed to rapidly partner products with leading players in the sector to maximise the adoption of each device it develops. Its first product, Ultravision, is a revolutionary new way of handling surgical smoke that is created during laparoscopic surgery. The product was awarded the CE mark in 2014 and subsequently received the Royal College of Surgeons Cutlers Surgical Prize.

Calon Cardio-Technology Ltd (Calon) is developing a new generation of implantable Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) for the treatment of heart failure. Current pumps have clinically proven that LVADs are a safe and effective therapy. However, these devices have so far failed to exploit their huge market potential for two reasons: current products are too large (requiring highly invasive surgery) and they are expensive at circ $115,000 per system. Calon’s technology addresses both problems and promises to realise the vision of LVADs becoming the routine method of treatment for heart failure. Calon have assembled a team of world class suppliers and collaborators to take their vision to market, such as Texas A&M, The John Radcliff Hospital Oxford, Swansea University, The Technology Strategy Board and the Welsh Government.

Established in 2005 and based in Swansea, Haemair are developing the next generation Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) device. The initial focus is on post-operative support following cardio pulmonary surgery where it can both improve recovery rates and reduce hospital stays. Respiratory problems cost the NHS over £2,500 million/annum. The much larger cost to society ranges from lost time at work to long-term support in homes and care homes. In the longer term, ECMO promises to support patients with both acute and chronic respiratory problems. Competitive devices are associated with an increased risk of blood clot formation requiring a level of anticoagulation that significantly increases the risk of haemorrhage. This risk currently limits ECMO use to a small number of high-cost specialist centres. Haemair have demonstrated a device with the potential to reduce the risk of blood clots and hence greatly increase access to ECMO. Haemair has raised over £2million in private equity investment and has also benefitted from grants from the Welsh Government and from the NHS.

Pulse Medical Technologies designs and manufactures medical devices for pain relief and wound healing. Pulse Medical Technologies was incorporated to design and develop pain relief and wound relief products using the therapeutic and healing properties of Pulse Electro-magnetic Field Therapy (PEMF), which has been cleared by the major national international Medical Authorities to treat medical conditions such as non-union bone fractures, wound healing and pain relief. The company is based in the prestigious Institute of Life Sciences in Swansea University and has access to world class research and development facilities and personnel who are currently working on its projects. The company’s main activity currently centres on the FP7 grant funded project called AMETHYST, which stands for: Ambulatory Magneto-Enhancement of Transdermal High Yield Silver Therapy Coming from a background in producing medical devices for pain relief using PEMF and through the extensive research the company undertook into PEMF for wound healing, it became evident that there was a large unmet need to develop an innovative solution to increase the speed of healing for chronic leg ulcers. The project entails passing an electromagnetic wave through silver to increase the efficiency of wound healing. Results to date have been extremely encouraging and the project is on target to be very successful. The company has been granted a European patent to cover the concept and is in the process of securing worldwide protection.

Theryte is a cancer drug discovery and development company. Its technology builds on a previously undescribed mechanism of action and is intrinsically selective to cancers whilst sparing normal human cells. Development is currently at the pre-clinical stage. Theryte’s experimental data suggest that there exists a relatively small number of key proteins which co-operate to exert a novel function in cancer cells, and by so doing re-stabilise the otherwise unstable cancer cell. A recent peptidomimetic compound shows significant anti-cancer activity against a range of solid tumour types and Theryte has embarked on a program of work to achieve in vivo proof of concept. Theryte outsources the majority of its R&D activities, and has requirements for medicinal chemistry, early ADME/Tox. studies, in vivo pharmacokinetics, tolerability and xenografts. In addition, the company is looking for collaborators and partners who can carry out cancer biochemical and genetics experiments to further investigate the novel mechanism of action.

Wales has a significant ‘core competence’ in wound healing, including clinical and economic leadership. The most regionally and globally recognised part of this leadership is The Wound Healing Research Unit (WHRU) which was established in 1991 as the very first research unit to specialise in wound healing. Since then the WHRU has continued to lead the world in this clinical area. Based at the University of Cardiff (UHW site) and working closely with the University Hospital. The WHRU collaborates closely with a host of regional, national and international organisations, including companies, other researchers and health care providers. It has assisted in knowledge transfer projects which have brought many pioneering new products and technologies to the market, benefiting patients, globally with some research being in the image management, storage, manipulation/computation arena. With the use of the current WHRU as central expertise focus, the creation of the Welsh Wound Innovation Initiative is a model for a network of clinical centres of excellence in wound care both nationally and internationally. The current WHRU is the basis for the larger all Wales organisation growing into an expanded, not-for-profit business, based at the Welsh Wound Innovation Centre in Llantrisant. The Welsh Initiative is funded by the Welsh Government and Welsh National Health Service and is used as an example of innovation leadership by both the Welsh and British Governments.
