Letter from John Naber,

U.S. Olympians President

Dear fellow US Olympians,

Greetings, or as we said in Nagano , "Konni-chi-wa (.::Jvr::-;1;1)!" Once again, the Olympic Movement delivered more than its share of wonderful stories and dramatic athletic events to the eyes of the world. Television ratings may have suffered due to the time delay, but that 's a problem NBC will have to overcome before the Games in Australia.

Wasn ' t Hermann (" the Hermanator") Maier amazing? The guy takes a tumble at 80 m.p h. and bounces back for two gold medals! Tara Lipinski proved that the champion has to earn her title on the ice and can even live in the village while doing so. The hockey players, without a professional league , found themselves on the cover of the Wheaties Box The aerialists , Eric Bergoust and Nikki Stone , who have made a career out of spectacular crashes, rose to the occasion and the top platform. Skiers are already thinking about renaming the

hospital where Street mended her knee as the "Picabo I. C U." I was honored to work with Eric Heiden, as we discussed the merits of"clapskates" and "zip-strips" while the crowd around us did the " M-Wave-Wave". Snow monkey s made me yearn for a nice hot tub , and big Akebono , the sumo wrestler, made the earth shake - a very Japanese celebration

While in Japan, I was able to partake in the USOC/AT&T family hospitality program and it was wonderful. Their ballroom was "the place to be " anytime you didn't have an event to attend. Jumbo TV screens , plenty of good food, and fun goodies besides! The pin trading was abundant, and the local volunteers could not have been more polite and accommodating. I felt like a privil ege d person the whole time

By the way, have you received your US Olympians membership card ? If not, call the Alumni Relations office, and if you have one, hang on to it. That ID number on the top right comer will prove very useful someday soon

Now that our focus turns toward the Games of the new millennium , USOC fundraisers are currently being planned in cities around the country. Usually, it is the Olympians that are most involved with the Movement that get invited to the nicest dinners. That's something to keep in mind .. . .

The USOC Congress in Orlando was a great re - awakening of the U.S Olympians Movement New chapters are being formed and old ones are getting re-invigorated. Chapters are creating web pages ; golf tourn aments are planned to benefit a wide number of worthwhile causes ; school visitations occur frequently aro und the country ; and sponsors get involved with the Movement (instead of just the celebrities). Our opportunities for doing good and having fun continue to escalate .

It seems that everywhere I go, people's interest and affection for members of the U.S Olympic teams continues to grow As we continue to further the Olympic cause, let's continue to keep in touch , at the personal, chapter and national level through the "Legacy".

Dinner, the gala first staged in 1981 by the International Amateur Athletic Association, Inc. , which Douglas now serves as president-emeritus and founder and Moses as president.

While the night ' s top honor, the Jesse Owens International Trophy Award, went to Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie, the 1996 Olympic 10,000meter champion and 'w orld record-breaker, the spotlight shined on the '48 Olympians with equal luminance.

It was Rev. Bob Richards' job to bring his contemporaries' deeds and glories back to life. Of course, no one could have done it better than "The Vaulting Vicar" who has made this a career.

Looking out at the packed assemblage , "What an incredible honor it is to be part of this wonderful team", said Richards, who won a pole vault bronze in '48 before his still-unequaled go ld s in '52 and '56.

"These are the greatest people to live on the face of the earth. In them , you can see the best in the human personality."

He spoke of Mathias, who took the first of his two decathlon golds in '48 as a 17-year -old Tulare, Cal. high school student

He spoke ofBlankers-Koen, one of the fortunate handful to have bridged the gap between the '36 and ' 48 Games , who took an unparalled four gold medals as a 30-year-old mother of two in London and might even_ have won two more - in events she held the world record - if only the schedule had allowed.

He spoke of Dr. Lee - the famed "Oriental from Occidental" - who emerged from a wartime internment camp to lead the world's platfonn divers in '48 and again in ' 52.

He spoke of Dillard winning the '48 100-meter dash , not his best event, after crashing into a high hurdle at the trials. Then he returned to win the hurdles in '52, along with sprint relay golds from both Games.

He spoke of the young Dillard being inspired by Jesse Owens , then himself inspiring a line of American high hurdling successors - Lee Calhoun, Hayes Jones , Willie Davenport, Rod Milburn, Roger Kingdom and Allen Johnson.

He spoke of Whitfield, who continued Owens' legacy at Ohio State by winning the 800 meters in 1948 , flew 27 missions as a tailgunner over Korea, returned to the Games in ' 52 and won another 800 gold

He spoke ofOstermeyer-Ghazarian, who took the shot put and discus in '48 as France's first woman track champion , launched a career as a concert

pianist, and was back in New York to play for the Waldorf crowd.

He praised the spirit, too , of Lou Zamperini , the '36 Olympic 5,000 -meter eight place finisher, whose tale of World War II survival and eventual reconciliation with his Japanese captors, had just aired as CBS' prelude to its Nagano Closing Ceremonies telecast.

He called them "Keepers of the Flame," the men and women who ' ve devoted so much of their he arts and sou ls to the Olympic vision The first Games of the new millenium are now just over two years away It was more than time to salute those who've kept that flame burning bright as ever

COR

N E R

Very little appreciation has ever been shown in writing for the work Olympic coaches have done over the years in the United States. This time we ' re going to focus on " the little things" that may have brought gold medals to the USA Team

Let ' s start with Dean Smith and his aides , John Thompson and Bill Guthridge They later succeeded Dean as head coach at North Carolina this year.

Suffice it to say, this was the team that was built around Adrian Dantley, Scott May, and Phil Ford . In fact, Smith had seven of the 12 from Tobacco Road colleges.

Coach Smith's "trick" was new to international basketball. He used everyone of his 12 players in the first half of every game. In this way the men were prepared if they were going to be called on in a crisis during the waning moments of the game

This proved to be the team we sent to the Games since the Wonder Boys of 1956 led by Bill Russell and K. C. Jones. In the preliminary round, they had humbled Yugoslavia 112-93 and then defeated the same team in the final, after the Yugoslavians had knocked over the USSR in the semi-final round, 95 -74, as Dantley of Notre Dame hit for 30 points.

One of my favorite stories concerns the strategy of Don Gambril, then the Alabama coach, who was head coach of swimming at Los Angeles.

In the official USOC book for the 1984 Games, I had written, "Gambril, in a pre-Olympic press briefing, predicted the USA would win 20 gold medals in swimming He correctly forecast the number of events the USA would win but he failed to anticipate the dead heat in the women's 100m freestyle event between Hogshead and Steinseifer. "

But Gambril should forever be in the record books for his shrewd strategy in setting up his quartet for the men's 4 x 200m freestyle relay. He picked his best free-styler, Mike Heath, to swim the opening leg and chose Bruce Hayes for the anchor. Hayes had not been selected for any of the individual races.

As figured by the swimming cognos c enti, it would be a duel between the USA and the German Federal Republic with the Games depending on a fast anchor by the albatross, otherwise known as Michael Gross.

At the start of the anchor legs , Hayes had an eight-foot lead over Gross. After 100 meters, Gross maybe had six to eight inches over Hayes But in the final 100 meters Hayes didn't catch Gross until the final stroke. The margin of USA victory was generously noted as three inches.

Among the 20 victories for the USA swimmers, in the absence of the USSR and its satellites and the one we shall al ays treasure , was the triumph in the 800 -meter relay to which we can point to the coach ' s strategy in saving Hayes for the anchor leg

How important is the ice hockey coach ? In 1980, e learned lie is the key player in the development of underachievers. The coach wa Herb Brooks who had played on the 1968 team that did oorly in Grenoble.

To get ready for his job, Brooks took a trip to e \Soviet Union to probe the Soviet ' s training methods and team sh·ategr.

From what he learned (which was backed up by e then coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, NFL Champions) the Sovie Olynt ic team did n t take to the ice until they had completed their dry-land con 'tilYning pror gram. This meant that the squad was ready for full -time duty the first time they stepped on the ice

Brooks was to follow the same regimen with t e SA iracle Team.

But Coach Brooks had another trick up his sleeve. He kne ing Soviet team may have been a bit long in the tooth , ·n other-woro , they were an "old team " in the matter of experience.

Somewhere along the exhibition tour, he found out that by playings 0 er shifts it seemed to work to the advantage of the USA team.

In the Olympics' opening game we tied Swed the final 30 seconds perhaps attributed to fresher attac ers. n every game, we seemed to win in the final period

Against the Soviets in the semi-final round, even the score in the final minute of the seco win the game in the final period with "fresher

That was the Miracle on Ice Team that was desi ated " Sportsmen o the Year" by Sports Illustrated. The honor was a feather in Coach Brooks' cap who learned the simple secret of the Soviet training grind.

Can we overlook the success of the women's basketball team in winning the gold medal at the Los Angeles Games True the natural rivalry between the USA and the Soviet Union was set aside since ilie USSR ooycott of the Games in Los Angeles

Patricia Head Summitt , a member of the ' 76 Olympic te m who had moved on to coach at the University of Tennessee, was chose to coach the USA team. She invited several college graduates to the trials , who had gained experience playin g in the strong European professi nal leagues which made a big difference.

In Anne Donovan, Summitt had one of the tallest centersin..the Garnes She also had the greatest college player up to that time , Cheryl Miller, of the University of Southern California.

With the mixture of Donovan, one-time star at Old Dominion , Cheryl Miller, and the upbeat strategy of Mrs. Pat Su i , fie SA was no o be denied.

Speaking of raw statistics, Miller led all sc over South Korea 85-55. Cheryl scored 16 point , and contributed five assists

On another occasion, we shall di scuss the contributions of Stan Wri ght to the 1968 4 x 100-meter relay team; Pat NaJ:!pi who handled the 19:z6 boxing team; Mr. Henry Iba , three-time OlymP,ic asketball coach; an 1984 men's volleyball coach Doug Beal.

UPS Sports Legacy & Champions Life

"A Winning Combination"

Olympic athletes from eleven cities across the UNited States participated in a program called the UPS Olympic Sports Legacy. Through this program, UPS provided athletic equipment to charities around the world and is tapping into children's untouched talents

The Olympic Sports Legacy program is one of UPS 's most far-reaching philanthropic initiatives. Throughout the month of January-one month prior to the opening ceremonies-UPS delivered over half a million pieces of sporting equipment to children's charities in 11 U S. cities and six countries, including Australia, Canada, France , Germany, Mexico and Taiwan

In the United States, UPS partnered with the Champions in Life program. Champions in Life is a USOC outreach program that uses Olympians to serve as role models and advisors to children. A winning combination, sports equipment that help inspire children to achieve and a message from an Olympian to show children what can be done to overcome obstacles and deal with challenges.

The Olympians

Poem by Alan Cook

They are the gods and goddesses of today, Descended from the Olympians of Greece.

From every land on Earth they come to play; Though there be wars and strife they come in peace .

They meet to test their skills in many a sport; Their bodies , tuned pianos , are perfection . With poise and graceful rhythm they cavort; To all the struggling world they give direction.

Through years of training, physical and mental, They work with love and hope and discipline. Though strong as lions, with children they are gentle; Their smiles when they compete are genuine.

They jump and vault and shoot and swim and throw; They somersault and run and skate and ski.

They give their all to win and yet they know It is the game that counts, not victory.

Our souls cry out for h eroes , let us follow; From chains of hate the imprisoned seek release .

Each deity, Athena or Apollo , Will lead us to a world of love and peace.
