CONNECTIONS

PURIS, welcome to 2023!

I’m extremely proud of all that we were able to accomplish these past 10 months together and cannot express enough appreciation for your hard work, dedication and perseverance and of course your patience. Through our combined efforts, we established a new leadership team that is laserfocused on improving our financial and operational performance. We rebranded the organization and launched a new company name. We set up and continue building upon a new I.T. infrastructure. We are improving our operational cadence and the quality of our backlog. Bottom line, our team has numerous successes to reflect upon and we have accomplished all of this in a very short period of time. As a result, we are seeing these efforts translate into tangible financial performance

improvements and that is very evident in how we have closed out our year in Q4.

We now have a solid foundation to build upon and with your diligence and ongoing commitment to improvement, we will propel forward and soar in 2023!

We still have a lot of work to do and in 2023; our journey of excellence is just beginning. We will continue to invest in our people, equipment, and technologies and as a result will continue to set ourselves apart from the competition. We are committed to staying on the current pathway to success! As I mention often, “when the company wins, each employee wins” and I am pleased to announce that this month, we will be rolling out a new employee incentive program. It’s something I touched upon in the

recent town halls, but has now been fully supported and sponsored by our owners, investors and executive leadership team. Supported by our new enterprise software system, each region will have real-time project performance data that will enable us to optimize our business performance across the organization.

I’m forecasting 2023 to be a breakthrough year for PURIS on many fronts including enhanced safety programs, employee engagement, inter-company communication and financial performance! Thanks again for all that you do and have done for the company. We will win and we’re going to win together!

114” DIAMETER CIPP REHABILITATION

Robert
Connections

In August 2022, our Kiowa, Colorado team kicked off Phase 3 of a project for Metro Water Recovery, the largest wastewater treatment provider in the Rocky Mountain West.

Phase 3 scope involved rehabilitation of all pipe and related structures supporting sewage flow from primary clarifier operation through aeration. The focus of this phase was to rehabilitate 895 feet of a 114” diameter pipe at the Robert W. Hite Sewage Treatment Plant. The facility and related interceptors are owned by a consortium of cities including City and County of Denver. The massive sewage plant processes over 130 million gallons of sewage per day!

The overall construction contract is valued at approximately $31M with the treatment facility improvements valued at $16M. This project is the first Construction Management at Risk (CMAR) project taken on by Inliner Solutions, a PURIS Company. CMAR is a project delivery method by which a construction project owner employs a construction manager—typically a general contractor—to consult and execute on a construction project. Given our expertise in CIPP technology, Inliner Solutions was not only able to self-perform the installation of this massive CIPP liner but also provided construction management and supported engineering for this high-profile project which included the design of a redundant bypass system capable of conveying 40 million gallons per day.

For the past 50 years, the original 114” concrete pipe served as the final influent line for raw sewage entering the primary treatment process. After decades of sulfuric acid exposure, the pipe structure was severely deteriorated and in drastic need of rehabilitation. After four months of pre installation site work, our 20 crew members manned a continuous 10-day, 24-hour operation to successfully complete the most critical phase of this project. Absent of any major issues, the installation of the enormous 114” liner was completed just before the Christmas holiday!

Requiring over 300,000 pounds of resin and with a total approximate weight of 350,000 pounds, the only installation option for a liner of this magnitude was an “over-the-hole wetout”. Although ambient temperatures were below freezing during the installation period, the operations team erected tents to prevent the liner from being exposed to ultraviolet light which would result in premature resin curing. After successfully completing the liner installation, the team is now focused on wrapping up the remaining project task and expects to close out the project by March 31, 2023.

Given the size, complexity and coordination required to successfully execute a project of this scale, we are certain this project will be a strong contender for the highly acclaimed, Trenchless Project of the Year award! We are extremely proud of our team’s performance and believes this project further supports our leadership position as a trenchless pipe rehabilitation solutions provider!

“Since we had communicated prior to commencement of the City waterpipe replacement project on Harbor Village Island, I wanted to circle back with you as the project wraps up on our street and in our area.

First, many thanks to you and all in City government for addressing our neighborhood concerns!!

There is noticeable difference in the quality of our water. It is crystal clear, has great taste and is delivered with suitable pressure. Our sinks, showers and toilets remain clean.

I want to make a special note of the MPC workmen – they were fast and efficient.

They arrived organized, went about their business with minimum noise and disruption, considering the huge project with which they were tasked. I personally noticed several incidents where their equipment was blocking the roadway where they made special effort to move equipment or otherwise direct traffic around the areas swiftly to keep our residents cars moving. They were courteous and did their best to keep positive relations with our neighbors. Again, many thanks to you Mr. Watson for your followup, and thanks to all in the City who made this project possible.”

Future FOCUSED

Learn about the Acumatica roll out.

With the hard work of our financial and operations team, we went live on Acumatica November 1, 2022. The newest version of Acumatica, PURIS’s financial system of record, is currently being used by our Inliner team with the migration of the PMC, IWPC, and MPC business now in process.

All links and functionality to the old system (E1) were deactivated concurrently with the changeover. Trainings were conducted both pre and post golive to ensure user know-how and best practices. To keep our teams fresh and current with system useability, this training will continue going forward. New usernames and logins have been issued to all those who have been impacted and approval authorities are continuously being edited.

The system changeover was not without its challenges, but has had a positive, wide-reaching

effect across multiple aspects of operations, including but not limited to, project costing/WIP, inventory, equipment, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. To make this happen the team worked collaboratively across departmental groups reenforcing teamwork across the front and back offices. In the spirit of “we are stronger together” the team designed a more efficient system that will work with ALL aspects of the combined business.

Our IT team has been working in parallel to automate other systems that connect directly to Acumatica which include but are not limited to, HCSS (HeavyJob and HeavyBid), payroll processing, and Adaptive Insights. Together these integrated financial and operational systems will lead to more accurate and timely data that enable us to make better business decisions.

KEY PROJECT WINS

In Q4, our continued focus on profitability improved the quality of our backlog. We are seeing positive pricing trends which, in part, are a result of inflationary pressures in the market. That said, our thorough proposal workups and comprehensive reviews are capitalizing on our superior understanding of the scope and competitive landscape. This has had a material contribution to enhancing margins. We will continue building upon this approach and including key members of the organization who provide valuable insight.

Leading a Culture of Safety in 2023

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4764 workers died on the job in 2020. That’s more than 13 people per day. In 2022, as a company we had 20 serious injuries. All of these injuries were completely preventable.

Creating a positive safety culture within an organization has shown to dramatically reduce the rate of injuries and accidents in the workplace. However, to effectively develop a culture of safety, we must look beyond accident/injury prevention and start examining the way we work.

What Is a safety culture?

Understanding the workplace culture within an organization is rather easy; all one must do is look at the way things are done. The concept of a safety culture therefore looks beyond specific safety policies and programs but captures the mindsets and behaviors towards safety of all company stakeholders–employees, managers, and owners. A positive safety culture in the work environment is critical to the success and effectiveness of any health and safety program.

Positive Safety Culture Characteristics

It is often easier to identify a company that has a negative safety culture than one that has a positive one. Why? A lack of a safety culture often means safety initiatives are not bought into by employees and often fail leading to higher rates of injury and accidents within the work environment.

While creating a positive safety culture may seem overwhelming, once the investment is made in building a culture of safety, the benefits are evident in all aspects of the company.

Organizations with a strong safety culture often experience:

• Increased employee productivity

• High employee engagement

• Lower turn over

• Decreased rates of injury or accident

What does a positive culture of safety look like? While qualities may differ from organization to organization, companies with a strong safety culture share several characteristics, including:

• Company leaders value employee safety

• Managers are committed to changing the work environment for the better

• Employees feel empowered to act

• Employees feel ownership over the safety of themselves and team members

• Investments are made in safety procedures, programs, and equipment

So, how do we improve our safety culture?

Define Responsibilities

1To have an effective safety culture, you must first define responsibilities within our organization. This should be done at all levels of the organization and include policies and goals.

Create an Organizational Vision for Safety

It is important that everyone in the company be on the same page when it comes to the organizational vision for safety. It is impossible to reach our safety goal if all company stakeholders are not working towards one common target.

Develop a System

for Open

Communication Companies with a strong safety culture invest in creating lines of open communication throughout their organization. Keeping employees updated on new safety initiatives is vital to successfully implementing policies and procedures. Monthly safety talks are a great way to share new information and allow for employees to opening communicate around safety within the workplace.

Involve All Level of Employees

Creating a safety culture starts from the ground up. It is important that employees of all levels be included in the planning and implementation phase of any new safety initiative. Asking for feedback during the initial planning phases increases buyin and prevents potential pitfalls further down the line during implementation.

Rebuild Reporting System

Our reporting system should be focused on the positive and employees should feel free to share safety concerns without repercussions. Rewarding employees who share safety issues is a great way to start rebuilding our system and encourage others to report.

Implement Hands-On Training

Proper training is critical when creating a safety culture within an organization. Sharing best practices and creating opportunities for employees to have hands-on learning sessions help employees retain and successfully implement new safety initiatives. Additionally, investing in quality training shows employees that you care about their safety increasing team member buy in and support.

Improving a safety of culture in an organization is the responsibility of all company stakeholders and should be viewed as an ongoing process. Companies with a true safety culture never stop trying to improve upon past goals.

The commitment results in a positive attitude towards safety which leads to a reduction in injuries and accidents. Take a look at the 10 steps below to see where you can make a positive impact on our saftey cultiure

Management Modeling

For any safety initiative to be a success, the procedure must be model from the top down. Managers must make a commitment to embody a safetyfirst work style and continuously demonstrate that safety is important and valued.

Hold Employees Accountable

Organizations that truly embody a safety culture have an overwhelming feeling that safety is important. Every team member feels responsible for their individual and co-worker’s safety. A big part of this ownership is holding employees accountable. The more an employee understands and feels accountable for safety initiatives, the more likely they are to take action to improve safety within the company.

Celebrate Success

Keeping team members motivated and updated about company progress is important to drive safety initiatives. Recognizing individuals, departments, and the organization as a whole for improvements is an effective way to keep team members excited and invested in building a culture of safety.

Commit to Continual Growth

A company that truly embodies a culture of safety understands that while success must be celebrated, there is always room for some improvement. Committing to constant growth and putting in place systems for continuous improvement ensures your organization will not remain stagnant in their results but continue to strive for an injury- and accident-free work environment.

LET’S HAVE A SAFE 2023!

Instilling a positive safety culture within the workplace not only improves employee health but also impacts the way many employees feel about our company increasing the positive feelings about our organization.

To be effective, any safety and health program needs the meaningful participation of workers. As we enter this new year, ask yourself how you can be part of this change. If you have questions about building or sustaining a culture of safety, or how you can be involved in improving the health of our employees, contact a member of the EH&S team.
