Murphy Pipeline Contractors, a PURIS Company, was established to bring the trenchless technologies of Europe to the United States. Our main focus is on pre-chlorinated pipe bursting, sliplining, and CompressionFit™ HDPE pipe lining for water and force main replacement from 2” through 100”.

At Murphy Pipeline, we help municipalities add value to their water and sewer pipeline replacement work using methods that are less intrusive to the community during construction compared to traditional open-cut installations. Our technologies expedite project schedules, provide new infrastructure with an extended design life, and save ratepayer dollars by reducing overall project costs.

With over 100 years of combined team member experience, we confidently manage large pipeline projects in high profile and environmentally sensitive areas. We work with municipalities, engineering firms, and contractors throughout North America to plan, design, and implement the renewal of valuable underground infrastructure.

CompressionFit™ HDPE Pipe Lining

Governed by ASTM F3508, CompressionFitTM HDPE pipe lining technology utilizes an HDPE pipe with an outside diameter slightly larger than the inside diameter of the host pipe being renewed. To facilitate installation, the HDPE pipe is butt-fused to match the required pull length and then drawn through a reduction die just before entering the host pipe. This process temporarily compresses the HDPE pipe to a smaller diameter, allowing for seamless insertion. Once in place, the pipe expands to create a tight, close-fit liner within the host pipe, ensuring long-term structural integrity and enhanced flow capacity.

During the pull, the towing load maintains the HDPE pipe under tension, keeping it temporarily reduced in size. Throughout the reduction and installation process, the HDPE remains fully elastic. Once installation is complete and the pulling load is released, the HDPE pipe expands until it conforms tightly to the inside diameter of the host pipe. This natural ‘tight’ or ‘compression fit’ creates a seamless, close-fit liner, effectively replacing the existing failing pipeline with a durable, highperformance composite system.

Increased flow rates over sliplining

Tight fitting HDPE provides maximum Internal Diameter allowing greatest flow

Smooth wall of HDPE (150 C-factor) reduces friction and pumping costs

No grouting required due to compressive tight fit of new HDPE

• Fully structural HDPE can be installed if the host pipe has little to no integrity

• Semi-structural HDPE can be installed when the host pipe retains some structural integrity, providing added strength, bridging gaps, and offering corrosion protection

• Thin walled HDPE can be installed if the host pipe is sound, but joints are leaking or corrosion protection is required

• Production rates of up to 5,000 feet in a single pull

• 91% less excavation than open cut

• HDPE has a design life in excess of 100 years, unlike short term fixes

• Easements not required

• Requires limited design

Pre-Chlorinated Pipe Bursting

Pre-chlorination eliminates the need for temporary water services. The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe is bacteriologically disinfected and pressure tested above grade prior to installation, allowing it to be placed into service immediately after installation.

The method utilizes HDPE pipe and entails the pre-assembly and testing of approximately 300 to 700 foot lengths of pipe above grade at a nearby staging location. The prechlorination and pipe fusion is completed in advance of pipe bursting operations. Once the pipe segment has successfully passed testing and disinfection procedures, the pipe bursting operations can commence. Small excavations are made along the section of the water main being replaced, allowing the new pipe to be pulled into position as the existing main is burst. Following installation, the new main undergoes postchlorination and flushing before being integrated into the distribution system.

Once the new main is installed, all services, fire hydrants, and tie-in connections are reestablished and the work pits are backfilled to preconstruction grade. The entire process is completed within a single day thereby minimizing the disruption to residents.

Residents only experience a 6- to 8-hour interruption in water service before being reconnected. Crews typically begin preparations around 7 a.m. and by noon the new pre-chlorinated HDPE is in place. Between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., residents are reconnected to the water system. At the end of each day, pits are backfilled to grade. By the end of each week, a restoration crew completes final restoration.

Static Pipe Bursting

Static pipe bursting is a trenchless method used to replace deteriorated or undersized pressure and non-pressure pipelines with new pipe of equal or larger diameter, while minimizing surface disruption. The process involves inserting a hydraulically powered bursting head through the existing pipeline. As the head advances, it fractures the host pipe, which is then displaced into the surrounding soil by an expander that is typically 15% larger than the outside diameter of the new pipe. This creates an annular space through which the new pipe—usually HDPE or fusible PVC—is pulled into place.

This method is highly effective for replacing a wide range of pipe materials including cast iron, asbestos cement (AC), PVC, galvanized steel, ductile iron, clay, concrete, and steel. It is ideally suited for pipeline diameters ranging from 2 to 30 inches. Murphy Pipeline Contractors specializes in the replacement of force mains using static pipe bursting, with millions of feet of successful installations throughout North America. The method is particularly advantageous for force mains that have suffered from internal corrosion, joint failure, or increased flow demands. It also improves hydraulic performance by installing new pipe with a smooth interior surface and leak-free fusion-welded joints. For gravity sewer mains, static bursting is used when maintaining or slightly adjusting the existing grade is acceptable. This allows for trenchless rehabilitation in sensitive or congested areas without the extensive excavation required by open-cut methods.

Communities across North America are increasingly selecting static pipe bursting as a cost-effective, low-disruption solution for renewing aging infrastructure.

Slip Lining

Sliplining is a trenchless rehabilitation method that involves inserting a smaller-diameter, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) carrier pipe into an existing host pipe, then grouting the annular space and sealing the ends. This proven method is particularly effective for renewing aging water and sewer force mains, offering a fast, cost-effective solution with minimal surface disruption.

Murphy Pipeline Contractors utilizes continuous HDPE sliplining, where long, fused pipe strings—up to 5,000 feet—are pulled through the host pipe between two small excavations. This allows for rapid installation and minimal impact to roadways, utilities, and surrounding infrastructure.

While sliplining generally results in some reduction of internal diameter, the smooth interior surface of HDPE and its superior flow characteristics often offset capacity loss. Hydraulic analysis is performed to ensure acceptable performance post-rehabilitation.

For projects requiring maximum retained or increased diameter, CompressionFit™ HDPE lining may be a more suitable alternative.

Lead Service Replacement

Lead and lead lined water pipes have been proven to have significant negative health impacts in both adults and children. In children especially, lead has been shown to impair physical and mental development whilst also damaging the brain in the process.

In Lead Service Line Replacement a simple horizontal drilling technique is used. The lead line gets disconnected from the home and the water main upon entry into the home via the basement (or first floor level if no basement present). Once the old lead line has been disconnected on both ends, it is usually abandoned in the ground and a new copper line is installed. This technique is designed to cause minimum disruption to neighborhoods and homeowners. Typical replacement occurs in 3-4 hours.

Benefits for Our Customers

• Removes potential hazards associated with drinking water contaminated with lead

• Improves quality of drinking water and modernizes water supply system

• Small window of water service interruption

• Surgical trenchless operation minimizing ground excavation and restoration

• Street traffic flow experiences little interruption

• Customer homes returned to original standing with a brand new water service line connected
