Values

Welcome to the world of fairy tales. This is a world of handsome princes, beautiful princesses, good fairies, evil witches, dwarves, giants, dragons, fantasy and magic spells. It is a world in which good invariably triumphs over evil and in which there are usually important values to be learned by readers of all ages, i.e. honesty, kindness, courage and so forth.

r o e t s Bo r e p ok u S

Four fairy tales have been included in this book to illustrate the value of kindness. They are: • “Cinderella” which teaches students about being kind, even to those who are cruel.

Teac he r

ew i ev Pr

• “The Enchanted Princess” which teaches students that kindness will be rewarded and cruelty will be punished. This fairy tale also highlights the importance of being kind to animals as well as people.

• “Rip Van Winkle” which teaches students about the rewards of living a life of kindness. • “Snow White and Rose Red” which teaches students about the rewards of persistent kindness, even when kindness is repaid with anger and hostility. This book includes activities which reinforce the value of kindness and enhance interest in, and understanding of, the stories.

© ReadyEdPubl i cat i ons •f orr evi ew pur posesonl y• The Stories “Cinderella” is one of the most popular fairy tales and is the first of four stories chosen to illustrate kindness. It is a powerful story which shows how Cinderella’s life is changed for the better when her Fairy Godmother is kind to her. It also reveals how Cinderella is kind to those who have mistreated her. When Cinderella is changed forever into a beautiful princess, her stepmother and stepsisters ask her, “Can you ever forgive us?” and Cinderella readily replies, “Of course I forgive you.”

The second story teaches its readers that kindness brings rewards, while cruelty brings punishment. The story contrasts the behaviour of two brothers, one kind and gentle, the other a bully. Those hearing this story are shown the consequences of the two brothers’ behaviours. The kind brother receives unexpected blessings while a dreadful fate awaits the bully. The story shows that being kind involves effort, but that this effort results in the kind person always having friends to help him, while the life of the bully is lonely and futile. Finally, the story especially emphasizes the importance of kindness to animals.

Teachers’ Notes “Snow White and Rose Red”

A tale for all ages, “Rip Van Winkle” tells the story of a simple, good-natured fellow, Rip Van Winkle, who is always ready to help with a neighbour’s washing, assist with a farmer’s sick cow or fix children’s kites. On one of his mountain rambles with his dog Wolf, Rip comes across a little man carrying a heavy barrel and his first instinct is to carry it for him. After he has slept for twenty years and returns to his village to find that people, places, names and faces have all changed, his earlier kindness stands him in good stead. He is fondly remembered by an old friend, and his daughter takes him under her wing and lets him live with her. Friends of Rip’s from long ago bring their children and grandchildren to sit on his knee to hear of his strange adventures in the mountains.

The final story chosen to illustrate the value of kindness is “Snow White and Rose Red”. Following the example of their kind mother, the girls make welcome a bear which has sought a warm fireplace in winter. Also, they persist in coming to the rescue of a dwarf who repays their kindness with anger and hostility. In the end when the dwarf attacks them with all his fury, the bear, to whom they have shown earlier kindness, deals with the dwarf. The bear then sheds his furry coat to reveal beneath a handsome Prince who marries Snow White while his brother marries Rose Red.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful girl named Cinderella. Her mother had died and her father had married again. Unfortunately, her stepmother hated her and her stepsisters were very cruel to her. They spent their time trying to make themselves look beautiful and made sure that Cinderella spent her time scrubbing the floors, cleaning up the ashes from the fireplace and washing all the linen and clothes. She had to take her stepmother breakfast in bed and polish her stepsisters’ shoes. She also had to make the beds, cook the dinner and even had to powder her stepsisters’ noses and clean their mirrors. All day she worked without ceasing.

on her feet she suddenly wore a pair of beautiful glass slippers.

“Now, fetch me a pumpkin from your garden,” instructed the Fairy Godmother. “Also, bring me six mice from the mouse trap and six lizards from behind the shed.” Magically, at the wave of her wand, the pumpkin became a handsome coach, the mice became six prancing white horses and the lizards became six footmen with silverbuttoned coats. Finally, Cinderella’s cat became a smart coachman.

One day, a messenger arrived with invitations to attend a royal ball at the castle so that the prince could choose a bride. “Please, may I go to the ball too?” begged Cinderella.

The prince was beside himself. He had to know who this beautiful girl was. Every girl in the kingdom was to try on the glass slipper so that whoever it fitted could marry him. When it came to the stepsisters’ turn they tried their hardest to squeeze their feet into the slipper but no matter how hard they tried the slipper would not fit. All of a sudden she remembered the Fairy Godmother’s warning and she slipped from the prince’s arms, dashed from the ballroom, fled down the castle steps and into her waiting coach. She did not even notice that in her rush to leave, she lost one of her slippers on the castle steps. It wasn’t until she had gone that the prince realized that he didn’t even know her name.

Soon, Cinderella and the prince were married and everyone went to the wedding, even the stepsisters whom Cinderella had completely forgiven for their previous cruelty towards her.

“But she is only a servant. The slipper won’t fit her,” howled her stepsisters. But, in spite of their protests, Cinderella was given a turn and her dainty foot slipped smoothly into the slipper. Crops were destroyed, cattle died and people lost their jobs. As a result, many people owed the cabinet maker money. One day, the cabinet maker stopped at the inn for a glass of ale and he heard a strange tale. The king’s daughter had been captured by a wicked sorceress and was imprisoned in a castle tower. Only a brave youth who could pass three difficult tests would be able to free her. The man who succeeded would be able to marry the princess and share her riches.

Snow White & Rose Red

Adapted by Ron Newton

Once upon a time there was a poor widow who had two daughters who were as beautiful as the two rosebushes which grew on either side of her cottage door. One of the rosebushes was red and the other was white, so the two daughters were named Snow White and Rose Red.

to enjoy the fire. Throughout winter the girls enjoyed the bear’s company, playing with him, pulling at his fur, riding on his back and tickling him. At last the winter snow melted and spring came to the forest. The bear said goodbye, explaining that he had to stay in the forest to guard his treasure against wicked dwarves who were locked under the ground during winter but came out in spring to steal everything that they could find.

Rose Red spent their time in the forest picking flowers, gathering nuts and playing with the creatures that lived in the forest. But in winter they stayed close to the hearth, and kept the fire going.

Shortly after the bear’s departure, the mother sent the girls to collect some wood for the fire and they came across a grumpy old dwarf with his beard stuck in a crack in a log. He glared at the girls and demanded that they help him. “Don’t just stand there, you silly girls,” he shrieked, “do something to help me.”

One evening, there was a loud knocking on the door. “Rose Red,” said the mother, “open the door. It is probably a traveler lost in the storm.” When Rose Red unbolted the door, a huge brown bear stood before her. “Don’t be afraid,” said the bear, “I’m frozen and just want to warm myself at your fire.”

The girls tugged as hard as they could but could not free the dwarf. So Rose Red pulled some scissors from her pocket and snipped off the end of his beard.

The Prince explained that the wicked dwarf had stolen his treasure and had placed a curse on him by changing him into a bear. The dwarf ’s death had set the Prince free. The sisters were overjoyed and soon Snow White married the Prince and Rose Red married his brother. Their mother came to live with them in the palace and brought with her the two rosebushes which had grown on either side of her cottage door.

The next day, the mother sent the girls to the village to buy some thread, laces and ribbons. As they walked along the road, they heard someone screaming in terror. They looked up and saw a gigantic eagle clutching the dwarf in his talons and about to fly off with him. Desperately, the girls took hold of the dwarf ’s legs and tugged so strongly that eventually the eagle let the dwarf go. With that, the dwarf grabbed a bag of glittering gems from under a bush and ran off to his cave.

long bushy beards and wore big hats, long flapping coats and knickerbockers.

Rip would often be found in the Royal George Inn where he loved to share an ale with his friends and swap stories with them about strange adventures surrounding the mysterious Catskill Mountains.

When Rip awoke, he felt very sore and stiff and his clothes were torn and tattered. His best shoes were in shreds and his beard was caught in a thorny bush and his gun was rusty. He looked around to see that everything had changed! The bush around him was thick and wild and there was a stream where there had once been a path. He struggled to his feet and tried to start walking down the mountain side, but soon he was tired, and as it was beginning to get dark, he decided to sleep under a bush and continue walking when it was daylight.

They took the barrel from Rip and from it filled their own drinking cups from which they sipped as they played their game. After a while Rip, who sat on a tree stump watching the little men, let his curiosity about what was in the barrel get the better of him. He took one sip, liked the taste, then took another sip, and then another, and then another. He began to feel drowsy; very drowsy indeed …

Once upon a time in a little village at the foot of the Catskill Mountains in North America there lived a kind, good-natured fellow named Rip Van Winkle. Rip knew everyone in the village and everyone knew Rip. He was kind to everyone, loving to his wife and family and always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in trouble. He was willing to help with a neighbour’s washing, chat to a farmer about a sick cow or fly kites and play marbles with the children. Even the dogs loved Rip and none of them ever barked at him.

w ww

One day, Rip headed off with his gun and trusty dog Wolf, to spend a day in the mountains. One day, as he sat in the sun on a grassy knoll, he saw in the distance a little man struggling with the weight of a heavy barrel which he carried on his shoulder. Rip watched from behind a rock but when he came closer Rip signalled to the little man that he was willing to help him by carrying the barrel for him. The two of them then walked in silence together until they reached a level clearing where there were seven other little men playing bowls. All of the little men had

Then out of the crowd which had gathered around him, stepped a woman. “Father. I’m your daughter. dogs barked at him. He came to his own house but the roof had fallen in and the windows were broken. He looked in a shop window and was horrified at the sight of an old man with tattered clothes and a long beard. Then all at once he realized that the old man was his own reflection. What had happened? He couldn’t understand it. Where were his friends from long ago and the children who he used to play with? One thing seemed certain though. He was now twenty years older and it seemed that no-one remembered him.

The children he had played with long ago brought their children to hear his story which Rip enjoyed telling to everyone who would listen. Rip continued his kind ways and spent the rest of his life enjoying new friends and old memories.
