REVIEW / BOOK TALK “The Boy at the Top of the Mountain”, by Irish author John Boyne, is the story of Pierrot Fisher. Pierrot lived in Paris with his mother and his father had already died. He had a best friend, Anshel, a deaf boy. One day, Pierrot’s mum died, and, for a few days, he stayed with his friend. Then, he was sent to an orphanage, where he had no friends, until his aunt sent for him to live with her in Germany. She changed his life and his name to Pieter. While at The Berghof, he met Adolf Hitler. Being Hitler, Pieter behaved according to the important instructions his aunt had previously given him. With time, the Fuhrer and Pieter became companions and confidents. Pieter even saved his life one Christmas Day when his aunt and the driver tried to kill him with a poisoned dessert. Both Pieter’s aunt and her friend were killed and he became a member of the Hitler Youth, even being just thirteen years old. Pieter’s life changed a lot. One day he found one of Anshel’s letters and he set it to the fireplace. He refused his other letters. He believed in Hitler and he wanted to fight for the cause. But Germany lost the war and Pierrot was alone again. Without a home or family, he lives the next nine years learning about the horrors of the war he never saw at The Berghof. When he returned to France, he first visited the orphanage in Orléans, now partly destroyed because of the war. He also discovers that Anshel had become a writer by seeing one of his books and went to his house to find out that he still had a friend he could count on.

REVISÂO LITERÁRIA “O Rapaz no Cimo da Montanha”, do escrito Irlandês John Boyne, é a história de Pierrot Fisher. Pierrot vivia em Paris com a mãe e o pai já tinha morrido. Tinha um grande amigo, Anshel, que era surdo. Um dia, a mãe do Pierrot morreu e ele ficou a viver alguns dias com o seu amigo Anshel. Depois teve que ir para um orfanato, onde não tinha amigos, e, posteriormente, vai viver com uma tia para a Alemanha. Ela mudou-lhe a vida e o nome para Pieter. Já na casa da montanhaThe Berghof conheceu Adolf Hitler. Sentiu que alguém o observava e percebeu que era Hitler, e então lembrou-se de se comportar de acordo com as instruções que a tia lhe tinha dado anteriormente. Ele e o Fuhrer tornaram-se companheiros e confidentes, de tal modo que um dia de Natal, Pieter até salvou a vida de Hitler quando percebeu que a sua tia e o motorista estavam a tentar envenená-lo com uma sobremesa. A tia de Pieter foi morta bem como o amigo, e Pieter tornou-se membro da Juventude Hitleriana, ainda que tivesse apenas treze anos. A sua vida mudou completamente. Um dia, encontrou uma carta do amigo Anshel, queimou-a na lareira e deu ordens à empregada para não receber mais nenhuma. Ele acreditava em Hitler e queria lutar pela sua causa. Contudo, a Alemanha perdeu a guerra e Pierrot ficou de novo sozinho, sem casa e sem família. Passa os nove anos seguintes a aprender acerca dos horrores da guerra que ele não tinha visto, porque estava isolado em The Berghof. Voltou para França e o primeiro lugar que visitou foi o Orfanato em Orléans, que se encontra parcilmente destruído por causa da guerra. Um dia, descobre um livro que lhe chama a atenção e vê que o autor é o seu amigo Anshel. Vai procurá-lo e descobre a sua bondade e que tem um amigo com quem pode contar. By FrancisM
