The Star

Dear Friends,

As I write this, preparations are well underway to welcome our children back for the new year. Today I was doing a walk through campus when my gaze fell on our graduates’ wall, on my daughter’s name, and finally on the inscription “Wisdom begins in Wonder,” and I realized once again that I am very proud of the way we embrace learning at this remarkable school.

At TCS, we understand the power of asking questions. Although the word is often prefaced by “child-like,” wonder- a vibrant curiosity- is what drives innovation in the adult world. Wonder also supports human connection, compelling us to look outside our own experiences to discover other ways of thinking. Finally, a well-preserved sense of wonder acts as a lifeline, keeping hope and the possibility of change alive in even the most challenging circumstances. For all these reasons, at TCS we work to build productive, engaged and resilient human beings by actively cultivating wonder.

In this magazine, you will find stories that capture the joy in learning that springs from this

approach. Every experience our teachers facilitate puts kids at the center of their own learning journey, weaving content and skills into a context that matters to them. As an educator and a father, I am continually amazed by the profound impact this approach has on our students. They emerge with both a deep intellectual foundation and the ability to engage with the complexities of the world with confidence and grace.

I welcome you to another year of growth, knowing that the seeds of wonder we plant this year will grow into the wisdom that our children carry with them tomorrow. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in this extraordinary journey.

Warm regards,

The mission of The Children’s School is to inspire each child’s unique potential and desire for life-long learning through a strong academic, social and environmental curriculum.

Hello TCS Families and Friends,

I write to you having just completed my first year as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. As one might imagine, I agreed to be the Chair feeling unsure as to how it would be for me. I am happy to report to you that I love my job and have so enjoyed getting to know the community better: the wonderful, dedicated teachers, the committed, competent administrators, the strategic thinking volunteer trustees, and the extraordinary families.

Our teachers are the heart and soul of the school and we couldn’t have a stronger heart and a more caring soul than the current faculty has. In every way they rise to the occasion to make the experience for the students the best it can be. I see so many examples of teachers going that extra mile.

As Board Chair, I work often with the administrators. They are all so committed and so good at their respective jobs. This year our Head of School, John Fowler, completed ten years at TCS and I know our entire community celebrated this milestone. He is my main connection to the school and is always there for me providing support and counsel as needed to all of us on the Board.

The trustees are dedicated, unpaid professionals who provide thoughtful and strategic thinking and planning as well as their extraordinary professional expertise. I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge both Thomas Verhagen and Diane Blumenthal who termed off this year. Thomas always wanted to do more and pushed us to consid-

er ways to bring the TCS magic to more families. Diane, a longtime and dear, personal friend and then fellow trustee, brought to the Board both her strategic legal thinking and the caring kindness of a grandmother of 4. I am excited to announce that we have 4 new trustees that have agreed to join our Board. Andreea Balteanu, Juliana Hoang, and Danny Nieman are all parents who are beginning their term this summer. Vince Glorioso is the Director of the La Jolla YMCA and will be joining our Board as well.

Lastly, I want to acknowledge our families. Their generosity to our Annual Fund and Fun Night exceeded our budgetary planning. And it is this area that I want to talk a bit more about right now. This year, the board is dedicated to enhancing our financial assistance program, allowing us to support even more families and extend this opportunity to a broader community. At our Fall Retreat, the Board will spend significant time studying this issue and exploring what we can do to improve in this area.

Please join me in celebrating this coming year with enthusiastic hopefulness as we build on our strong foundation of an extremely successful progressive school.

“ Our teachers are the heart and soul of the school and we couldn’t have a stronger heart and a more caring soul than the current faculty has. In every way, theyrise to the occasion to make the experience for the students the best it can be.

2023-2024 HIGHLIGHTS

Great Artists Grand Finale

On April 11th, 2024, the Great Artists Grand Finale took center stage at The Children’s School. This six-week study brought together various disciplines, blending history, technology, math, science, and more, to immerse students in the captivating world of art. Through this multidimensional approach, we aim to instill a deep appreciation for art, foster critical thinking, and inspire creativity among our students.

Additionally, we had the privilege of welcoming a special guest artist, Amadeo Bachar, renowned for his expertise in underwater sea life. He collaborated with our 3rd graders on a unique La Jolla inspired wall mural, adding an exciting and educational dimension to the event.

Our next Great Artists Grand Finale event will mark a significant milestone as we will celebrate our 25th year anniversary. This annual event has become a cherished tradition within the school community, eagerly anticipated by students, teachers, and parents alike. Over the years, the study has evolved and grown, incorporating new elements and embracing advancements in technology and art forms. Our 2023-2024 Grand Finale allowed students, parents, and community members to honor the students’ achievements.

The enduring success and longevity of this event speaks volumes about the commitment of our teachers, staff, parent volunteers, and room parents. We extend our deepest gratitude to them for transforming our campus into an art gallery and for creating the magic that our students will remember for years to come.

Winter Sing

Transporting the audience on a global journey, this year’s Winter Sing on February 15th showcased the incredible talents of our students from kindergarten to 8th grade. They captivated the audience with vibrant renditions of musical hits from around the world.

Guided by our witty 5th grade class, who skillfully wrote and performed the skits, this year’s performance embraced the theme: “PLACES”

Our TCS stage came alive with the energy and diversity of international musical hits. Our talented performers brought these global classics to life. From the patriotic vibes of “Party in the USA” to the evocative tones of “Pompeii,” from the catchy rhythms of “Land Down Under” to the iconic “New York, New York,” the musical medley spanned continents. The hosts traveled across the globe, encountering cultural highlights, celebrating the rich diversity of music and culture from around the world.

Spring Sing

We are so proud of our Toddler, Preschool, and Prekindergarten students for their performances in our annual Spring Sing this past May. Some song highlights include Eye of the Tiger, Do-Re-Mi, and John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt.

Engaging in stage performances during early childhood is a transformative experience that brings many benefits. By embracing the magic of music and performance, we empower young minds to blossom into confident, expressive, and well-rounded individuals, ready to face the world with resilience.

Thank you to everyone who came to support our little performers, many of whom took their first steps onto the stage. A special thank you to Lauren and Zoe, our music teachers, for their hard work and dedication.

3RD GRADE INSPIRATION

REBECCA & THOR’S STORY

Both Thor Sigurdsson and Rebecca joined TCS in the same year, forging a special bond as newcomers. Thor fondly recalls the comfort he felt knowing that his teacher was also new, making his transition smoother and more welcoming. “I came into TCS in third grade, and this was also Rebbecca’s first year of teaching at TCS. We were both new to TCS and I remember feeling accepted knowing my teacher was also new!”

Rebecca filled her classroom with the joys of music as she regularly brought her guitar, singing and playing for the students. This had a profound effect on Thor, “She would regularly bring in her guitar and sing and play for us, and growing up I really loved to sing, but I had never had any interest in learning any instruments. Seeing Rebecca play her acoustic guitar really inspired me to want to learn guitar as well!” Rebecca even taught him his first chords. By the end of third grade, Thor had written his own heartfelt lyrics to Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” expressing his love for the school year and his reluctance for it to end.

This memorable performance marked the beginning of his lifelong passion for music and instrument learning. “I sang

and performed my rendition on guitar in front of Rebecca and my classmates one of the last days of school, and looking back I’ve realized technically it was the first time I ever performed with an instrument in front of people!”

Thor’s journey didn’t stop there. He continued to nurture his love for music throughout high school and university, ultimately becoming a full-time musician. Today, he plays an impressive array of instruments including piano, bass, electric guitar, classical guitar, oud, tabla, harmonium, banjo, trumpet, lute, ukulele, frame drum, and djembe. Thor also writes, records, and mixes all his own music, showcasing his incredible talent and dedication.

Rebecca’s influence was instrumental in sparking Thor’s musical journey, a passion he continues to grow and foster every day. TCS is immensely proud to have been part of Thor’s remarkable story and celebrates the transformative power of dedicated teachers like Rebecca. Thor’s journey is a shining example of the magic that happens when a student’s potential is nurtured with care and inspiration.

you would like to learn more about Thor, please visit his musical website at thorsigurdsson.com.

TCS POST OFFICE

A 1ST GRADE ADVENTURE

At The Children’s School, hands-on learning experiences are at the heart of our educational philosophy. Annually, our first graders take on the exciting and educational project: organizing and managing the TCS Post Office. This activity not only provided them with a unique opportunity to learn about the workings of a post office but also instilled in them a sense of responsibility and teamwork.

For three weeks, The Children’s School implements a school-wide mail service, engaging students from Toddlers to 8th grade in a letter-writing initiative. Everyone writes letters to friends, teachers, staff, and buddies, fostering connections across grades. An example of this bonding is an 8th grader who consistently wrote to a 1st grader, leading to a babysitting relationship. First graders actively participate by creating a classroom mail system with labeled shoe boxes, breaking into small groups to manage the collection, sorting, and delivery of mail weekly.

This mail service teaches students about the postal system, aligning with their friendly letter writing unit and reading “Flat Stanley.” First graders make “Flat

Me’s” and write letters to friends and family worldwide, integrating their learning about continents. Through this process, they learn to write and address letters, organize the mail system, and take responsibility for their work. It’s the first time first graders walk around campus independently, working in well-crafted groups of 3-5, managing significant responsibilities, and correcting mistakes in mail sorting.

The experience was not just limited to our campus. To give them a real-world perspective, the first graders took a walking field trip to a nearby USPS mailbox. Here, they had the chance to mail out their own letters, witnessing firsthand the journey of their mail from the sender to the recipient.

This project exemplifies our commitment to providing project-based, student-focused learning experiences that are both educational and engaging. Our first graders’ hard work and dedication to managing the TCS Post Office have not only enriched their understanding of postal services but also fostered a sense of accomplishment and pride in their contributions to our school community.

5TH GRADE LIVING HISTORY

Fifth graders from The Children’s School embarked on an exciting educational adventure to the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Immersed in the rich maritime history, students boarded the Star of India and used their classroom knowledge of colonial life to roleplay the dramatic events of 1774. This interactive experience allowed them to step back in time and actively participate in historical reenactments, deepening their understanding of the period and the challenges faced by those living in the colonies.

As part of their living history experience, the students assumed the roles of merchant marines navigating the tumultuous triangle trade route between New England and the Caribbean. They grappled with the daily struggles and decisions faced by sailors of the 18th century, bringing to life the complexities of maritime commerce and the broader socio-economic conditions of the time. This hands-on learning opportunity not only enriched their grasp of history but also fostered teamwork, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for the resilience and ingenuity of early American settlers.

EMBRACING TCS ENVIRONMENTAL CURRICULUM

TCS 6TH GRADERS VISIT PALI ADVENTURES FOR OUTDOOR ENGAGEMENT

Our TCS 6th graders embarked on an exciting journey to the annual Pali Adventure camp, a highlight of the school year. As part of TCS’s environmental curriculum, this immersive experience offers students the opportunity to explore the great outdoors, engage in hands-on learning, and develop teamwork and leadership skills.

During the first week of school, students collaborate to design their program for the Pali trip by selecting from a broad variety of classes offered. At camp, they may find themselves performing chemical tests to assess pond water quality as part of a freshwater biology class, or hiking through trails in the San Bernardino National Forest to learn about the local ecosystems. Students also learn the importance of making eco-responsible choices while hiking, camping, or backpacking.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the camp, our students participate in a variety of activities designed to challenge and inspire them, fostering a deeper connection with nature and each other.

TEACHER FEATURE

Sophie Edwards & Vanessa Smith

What makes our fourth grade classrooms at The Children’s School (TCS) unique? Our 4th grade teachers, Sophie Edwards and Vanessa Smith. Their classrooms are vibrant hubs of curiosity, growth, and excitement. Their journeys and philosophies are what makes them cherished members of our TCS family.

Meet Sophie!

Sophie Edwards holds a BA in Liberal Studies from Sonoma State University and a multiple subject teaching credential. Her student teaching experiences in 1st and 4th grades laid a strong foundation for her teaching career. Sophie’s passion for teaching began in childhood. She fondly recalls playing school with her neighbors and even asking for an overhead projector for her eighth birthday. However, her true educational transformation came when she transferred to High Tech High, where she experienced the power of project-based learning and dedicated teachers. This holistic, meaningful, and collaborative environment inspired her to become the teacher she is today.

Sophie’s educational philosophy emphasizes building strong relationships with students, seeing them as whole individuals, and creating a safe, comfortable, and caring learning environment. She believes that the deepest learning occurs when students are interested and invested in the content, a principle she loves about TCS’s focus on student voice and choice. Sophie loves the curiosity and eagerness of 4th graders. Their questions and engagement are invigorating, and she enjoys witnessing their growing independence and social skills throughout the year. Teaching about the Gold Rush is a highlight for Sophie. She brings this unique period in California’s history to life through novels, research projects, and hands-on experiences in Sacramento, where students pan for gold and explore historical sites.

One of Sophie’s cherished memories is her first Great Artist’s Finale, where the creativity and excitement of the event, along with the pride of her students, left a lasting impression. Great Artist is also her favorite TCS tradition, offering her a chance to be creative in her teaching and integrate various subjects, making learning interconnected and engaging. Outside of school, Sophie loves reading, being outdoors, practicing yoga, and participating in acrobatics at the San Diego Circus Center. She considers landing a teaching position at TCS one of her proudest accomplishments, aligning perfectly with her educational values and beliefs. Her students’ excitement and curiosity inspire Sophie to keep teaching, finding joy in helping them discover their strengths. Sophie’s favorite quote encapsulates her outlook: “The future belongs to the curious. The ones who are not afraid to try it, explore it, poke at it, question it, and turn it inside out.”

Meet Vanessa!

Vanessa Smith, holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications-Public Relations from FIU and a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from FAU, along with a California Clear Teaching Credential.

Her journey into education began as an afterschool care counselor in high school, where her interactions with children inspired her to pursue a career dedicated to nurturing young minds. Vanessa’s educational philosophy is centered in recognizing each student’s uniqueness and potential, creating a welcoming and nurturing environment where learning is both exciting and purposeful. Vanessa particularly enjoys teaching 4th graders, appreciating their expressiveness, self-awareness, critical thinking, and curiosity. She loves guiding them through innovative, active learning experiences, such as the California state symbol project and the annual

trip to Sacramento, which fosters creativity and strengthens student-teacher bonds. Her goal is to cultivate imaginative and independent thinkers through innovative and active learning experiences. These projects set a positive tone for the year, making learning both engaging and memorable. Vanessa also cherishes TCS traditions like our Winter Sing, Great Artist’s Finales, and field days, with the Great Artist tradition being a favorite for its integration of art with curriculum, enriching students’ learning experiences.

Outside the classroom, Vanessa finds balance and inspiration in traveling, exploring new places, listening to live music, creating pottery, and practicing yoga. Her greatest accomplishments are the lasting connections she forms with her students and colleagues at TCS, which continue to inspire her passion for teaching. Her favorite quotes reflect her appreciation for nature and curiosity: “Adopt the pace of nature. Her secret is patience.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”Walt Disney, and “If one truly loves nature, one finds beauty everywhere.” - Vincent van Gogh.

At TCS, our 4th grade teachers Sophie and Vanessa exemplify the dedication, creativity, and passion that make our school a special place for students to learn and grow. Their unique approaches and love for teaching create an environment where students thrive, making each day an adventure in discovery and learning.

WHY WE GIVE THE LINCOLN FAMILY

We joyfully give to The Children’s School every year in gratitude for the incredible experiences TCS provides for our kids, especially the specialty programs. Not only are our children taking art, technology, Spanish, science, music, and PE classes taught by the most wonderful and dedicated teachers, but they are doing so multiple times a week. This is becoming increasingly rare at schools, yet these subjects are SO important to a well-rounded education. We love being able to contribute in some way.

The topics my kids are interested in are vast and it is a direct result of the classes at TCS. For example, my youngest son has turned his bedroom into an art gallery after becoming inspired at Great Artists, and my oldest son created a presentation for me on what he would include in his dream “arcade room” after learning how to do so in tech. We are so grateful for these fantastic specialty programs and their positive impact! The entire staff of teachers, administration, and the support team gives so much of themselves to create a welcoming environment where my kids can learn and play and it is a joy to be able to give back - the unique programs and the people that make up the magic at TCS are why we continue to give each year.

FUN NIGHT!

Fun Night is our annual spring fundraising event, which stands as a pillar of support for the beloved students, teachers, and programs at TCS. On May 11th, at The Farmer and the Seahorse, we celebrated this year’s theme, “Under the Sea,” bringing together our community for a night of joy and support.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to the TCS community for your support and participation in this year’s Fun Night. Your generosity and dedication to investing in education bolsters the current experiences of our students while laying a strong foundation for their future.

Together, we raised vital funds that directly benefit our students and will enable us to continue providing a substantial Financial Assistance program. We firmly believe that a TCS education is one of the greatest gifts families can offer their children, and the impact is best illustrated by the story shared by our alumnus, Charlie Lynn, Class of 2011. Simply scan the QR code below to hear his inspiring journey.

Mark your calendars and save the date for next year’s Fun Night on May 3rd, 2025! We hope to see you there!

We know that a TCS education is one of the best gifts that families can give to their children. We want that gift to be available to as many families as possible. Check out Charlie’s story to learn more about how your contribution can make a lasting impact.
