Mary Beth Marchiony Named Head of School Mary Beth Marchiony became Topeka Collegiate’s Head of School on July 1, 2011.

She is the first woman to be named to the top leadership position in the school’s nearly threedecade-long history.

In her short time at Topeka Collegiate, Mary Beth Marchiony has continued a well-established pattern of earning high praise from professional colleagues and affection from students and their families. Topeka Collegiate Board of Trustees President Michel’ Cole says, “Mary Beth is a solutions-focused leader with a love for children and passion for education. Given her depth of previous experiences in independent schools, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a steady, even approach to making our school the best it can be.”

She is also a Klingenstein Fellow of New York’s Columbia University Teachers College, the single most prestigious credential in the independent school world. Yet she is tastefully modest and fun to be around. Mary Beth is one of the most accomplished and disciplined administrators I’ve known in my career. I’ve been telling her for 15 years that she should be a Head of School!”

They need to be intelligent, compassionate and love young people. And they need to have an inner strength and vision that inspires others. In Mary Beth, you have such a person.”

After 14 years at Pembroke Hill serving in a variety of roles including Director of College Counseling and Associate Director of Admissions, Mrs. Marchiony moved to another leading independent school, Park Tudor in Indianapolis, where she served as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid. Her colleague and fellow parent there, Maria Kimsey, is now Assistant Head of School for Finance and Operations at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. “My daughter had the good fortune to have Mary Beth as her college counselor,” she remembers, “and they developed a warm and trusting relationship that served her well during the college admission process and ultimately, in choosing the right school. Mary Beth was highly respected by the entire Park

Tudor School community. As long as I have known her, Mary Beth has been committed to excellence in her work.”

Most recently, Mrs. Marchiony was Senior Associate Director for Academic and Career Counseling at Kansas University’s Athletics Department. One of the graduating athletes she advised wrote, “Thank you so much for everything you did for me. I truly could not imagine getting where I am without the support, pep talks, references, etc. that you provided.

I’m sure you will truly be missed around Kansas Athletics and I feel sorry that other Jayhawks won’t get to have such a wonderful advisor.”

Tom Harvey, now Head of School at St. Aloysius in New York City, was Head of School at Pembroke Hill during part of Mrs. Marchiony’s tenure there. “Few heads of school have experience as vast as Mary Beth’s,” he says. “It seems there is nothing she has not done and done well: teaching, coaching, prep admissions, university admissions (Georgetown), college counseling, fundraising, higher education administration (KU), and parenting.

Mrs. Marchiony acknowledges with a smile that her friend has encouraged her to become a Head of School.

“As I said when I first arrived at Topeka Collegiate,” she says, “I believe I have been preparing my entire professional career for the opportunity I have been provided at TCS. I am excited that my first opportunity to serve as Head of School has come at a school with such wonderful young students, a dedicated faculty and staff, and such a committed group of parents. With that spirit we can accomplish great things.”

Goodbye and Thank You, Mr. Patterson In May we said farewell to Dick Patterson as he completed two-and-a-half years of service as Head of School. While initially insisting he was a “climate guy,” Mr. Patterson proved to be a multi-talented, smart, compassionate, accessible leader who earned the respect of the entire school community.

At an assembly in his honor, students and staff portrayed some of the Mr. Patterson “precious moments” - the way he could fix anything, his stories, his “manual” elective, the way he taught first graders to tie their shoes, the time he dressed as Spiderman and went up on the roof, his sense of humor, the orange Bug, his unwavering advocacy for children.

Watching the school community come together and seeing the incredible dedication of our families and staff to the school and its mission has been the most rewarding experience for me in nearly 50 years of education.”

The governor sent a Certificate of Recognition referring to Mr. Patterson’s proud record in education, “Mr. Patterson has spent his entire professional life improving the lives of students.” There were songs with lyrics rewritten just for him, “Here’s to you, Mr. Patterson. We all love you more than you will know,” and the presentation of a wooden bench with the school logo. Perhaps most gratifying was the outpouring of appreciation and affection from the children.

Founders Susan and Kent Garlinghouse spearheaded the formation of a lasting tribute in Mr. Patterson’s honor.

The Dick Patterson Fund was established to help give deserving students the advantage of a Topeka Collegiate education. Recipients must demonstrate one or more of Mr. Patterson’s admirable character traits. The first Dick Patterson Fund award was given this fall to fifth grader Trevor Johnson.

TCS Class of 2007 Makes its Mark as Class of 2011 Both student speakers at Topeka High School graduation this spring were Topeka Collegiate alumni - Valedictorian David Wang ‘07 and Senior Class President Daniel Kennedy ‘07. They were joined at the speakers’ podium by another TCS alum, Stacie Kossoy ‘97, who delivered the commencement address. What a proud day for Topeka Collegiate!

Daniel celebrated diversity in his graduation remarks, saying, “To me, excellence in education is experiencing the diversity of the world we live in today, whether it’s race, ethnicity, creed, sexual orientation, religion or age. In his valedictory remarks, David offered his classmates advice: have balance, be humble, work hard, take care of your body and mind, and never stop learning. “It may seem now that you’ll just spend the rest of your adult life getting older,” he said, “but life is not meant to be David Wang ‘07 an 18-year journey. Whether it’s good or bad, use every moment in your life to develop yourself as a person.”

Daniel is a National Hispanic Scholar, a National Merit Commended Student and winner of the National Honor Society Senior Award. Recipient of Rodriguez and Elliott Scholarships, Daniel is a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis.

David is a National Merit Finalist. He was chosen as a National Merit scholarship winner from among more than 15,000 finalists. Scholarship winners are those finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. David was awarded Ervin and Danforth Scholarships and attends Washington University in St. Louis.

Two other members of the TCS Class of 2007 join David and Daniel at the top of their Topeka High class - Joel Billinger and Lauren Gernon.

The four represent the top 1% of the class, earning each of them the Governor’s Scholar Award. Joel is in the Honors Program at Kansas University where he earned Summerfield and Dean’s scholarships. Lauren is the winner of the 2011 YWCA Future Leader Award, given to a young woman who shows outstanding leadership potential through her involvement in extracurricular activities, community service and academic achievement. She is a freshman at Rice University in Houston.

Who’s on the Cover? TCS Alums!

“I thought, ‘That guy looks familiar!’” laughs Founder and Trustee Susan Garlinghouse, describing her first glance at the June 29 issue of USA Today. That guy is Brad Garlinghouse ‘85, pictured on the front page of the Money section of the newspaper, and interviewed for a technology article about AOL’s innovative business strategy, “It’s Engineers Gone Wild at AOL.” Brad is president of AOL’s Applications and Commerce Group.

Trustee and alumni parent Jett Elmer says it’s a bit strange to walk by a newsstand and see your daughter looking back at you from the cover

of a magazine. That’s what happened when Jett and Tim Elmer traveled to Asheville, North Carolina in April. There was Bridget Elmer ‘91, on the cover of Bold Life - Western North Carolina’s Arts and Culture Monthly. Bridget is the

subject of an article about book art that begins: “Combining her interests in handmade books, libraries, information exchange and social justice, Bridget Elmer produces works of art that go beyond the book - literally.”

Rounding out our trio of alumni cover photos is the image of Cooper Self ‘09 on the cover of the May/June 2011 issue of Social Education. It’s a photo from 2008, taken as Cooper explained his 7th grade History Day exhibit to the staff at the Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene. His exhibit qualified him to represent Kansas in the National History Day Contest.

Since that photo was taken, Cooper has continued to excel at National History Day. As an eighth grader, he took second place in the -6-

nation in the individual exhibit category with his exhaustively-researched project “Harry Colmery Writes the First G.I. Bill: The Making of the American Middle Class.” As a Topeka High School sophomore this summer, Cooper won third place in the senior individual exhibit category at National History Day. (see p. 31 )

Alumna Educator Addresses the Class of 2011 Stacie Kossoy ‘97 began her career in education as part of Teach for America, which places outstanding college graduates as teachers in low-income communities.

After teaching in Camden, New Jersey, Stacie moved to Washington, DC to be a founding teacher at KIPP DC: LEAP Academy. KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) is a national network of charter schools. KIPP schools were recently featured in the documentary “Waiting for Superman” as some of the most successful charter schools in the nation. After several years in Washington, Stacie was selected for the Fisher Fellowship, a year of leadership development and travel to excellent schools across the country in order to prepare her to open her own school. In July of 2010, Stacie opened KIPP DC: Grow Academy, an Early Childhood School, with 100 PreKindergarten students. Here are excerpts from Stacie’s graduation address: “One of the most incredible things about being back here at Topeka Collegiate is the number of educators who are still here nearly 14 years later. Being someone who is in education, it is rare to find people who commit a lifetime of high quality service to one school. And, as part of my professional experience, I’ve traveled and evaluated teachers and schools across the country, and I can tell you that Topeka Collegiate is a top tier school that provides outstanding educational experiences to its students in science, math, language arts, music and art.”

“One of my most memorable teachers during my time here, who always stands out in my mind, is -9-

Mrs. Hoyt. I remember her class as being a safe place where I felt valued as a mathematician, and made real world connections between math and life. I walked out of Topeka Collegiate being confident in my skills as a mathematician and more than two years ahead of most of my peers in high school. While many women I know say that they are just not good at math I have always had confidence in my math abilities and I attribute a large part of that to Mrs. Hoyt.”

“I recognize these teachers both because I believe teaching should be our most valued and celebrated profession and also in hopes that you will reflect on the wonderful teachers you’ve had here. Be confident in the fact that the things you learned here will stay with you and take you far.

Congratulations to each of you on the hard work you’ve done to be here and to all the people who have helped you get here, teachers, parents, family members and other supporters.”

“I leave you with one of my most favorite quotes: ‘Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.’ I hope that each of you will join a committed group of citizens to help change the world, as you are the future of our planet. Congratulations on taking your first steps into the adult world.”

Class Notes Community College in Alexandria. “It’s my first foray into community college,” she says, “and so far it has been wonderful. I have small classes and the college is really focused on quality teaching.”

Alka and her husband have three-year-old twins who “continue to be our biggest source of joy and pride. They are just unbelievable!”

1985 Brigid McGowan lives in New Hampshire with her husband of 20 years and her two children, 15-year-old Allen and 13-year-old Sarah, who she describes as “math and science kids.”

Brigid works as an engineer for a company that produces software and mobile devices for the architects, engineers and construction (AEC) sector. “I can’t believe I get to test and break software and build computer systems while getting paid to do it,” she says.

1989

Hari Osofsky enjoyed her first year at the University of Minnesota Law School where she is an associate professor with tenure; the 2010 Lampert Fesler Fellow; the Associate Director of Law, Geography and Environment in the Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment and the Life Sciences; and affiliated with geography and conservation biology.

She describes the position as a “wonderful interdisciplinary playground for me to pursue my work on climate change and clean energy.”

Hari passed her comprehensive exams for her geography PhD and is looking forward to the dissertation stage. Her two children love their new home. The family made its first visit to Minnesota lake country this summer.

Laura Hill likes to say she “clicks her heels three times now and then to return to Kansas and visit dear friends and family,” but she has called the San Francisco Bay Area home for the last 18 years. By day she works as a hospital process improvement and patient experience advisor, while evenings and weekends are usually spent hiking or training for long distance cycling events. During college she picked up the hobby of vintage ballroom dancing and enjoyed dancing at a couple of Viennese balls in Vienna, Austria last winter. She also performed at the Spoleto Festival in Laura Hill waltzing in Vienna Spoleto, Italy this summer.

Kathleen “Kaki” Williams has joined Clayton Financial Services as a financial planner. Kaki is a chartered retirement planning counselor with four years of experience as a financial adviser.

She was recently named one of Greater Topeka’s 20 Under 40. The honorees, all under the age of 40, were chosen for their leadership and achievement, both professionally and as members of the community.

Matt Garlinghouse and his wife Katie welcomed their daughter Claire on March 4 of this year.

Everyone is happy and healthy, Matt reports, and “some semblance of the new sleep reality has set Claire Ruth Garlinghouse and her parents in” for these first-time parents.

Emily Franklin is a third-year student at Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, where she serves on the staff of the Pepperdine Dispute Resolution Law Journal. This summer she worked on criminal cases as a law clerk in the office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney. Conveniently, Emily lives just across the street from her sister and fellow TCS alumna Julia ‘96.

1991

Samantha Crow Quist enjoyed her job as Marketing Director at Gnip, a tech startup in Boulder, Colorado that “manages the aggregation of public conversations from social media platforms for enterprise applications,” but she and her husband Jake moved back to the Silicon Valley in late summer so he could start his own tech venture, a data access and analysis company called Zillabyte. Samantha is exploring early-stage startups in the Bay Area and “may start my own little enterprise.”

1995

Bridget Elmer appeared on the cover of Bold Life, Western North Carolina’s Arts and Culture Monthly (see p.6) in April as the subject of an article about her work as a book artist.

Bridget was also recently interviewed regarding her work Bridget Elmer as artist-in-residence as the co-founder of Impractical Labor, a collective of artists working with obsolete technology. The interviews are featured in the New York Foundation for the Arts NYFA Current magazine and on the Hello Craft blog. Bridget served as artist-in-residence at Chicago’s Catherine Cook School in the spring, where former TCS Head of School Michael Roberts proudly introduced her as a Topeka Collegiate alum. The holiday season brought the happy announcement that Bridget and her longtime boyfriend and fellow artist Lyman Edwards are engaged to be married. In addition to their May 2012 wedding, Bridget is looking forward to graduating from the University of Alabama in December, when she will receive her second master’s degree, in library and information studies, and celebrate her master’s in fine arts, which she completed in the fall of 2010.

1993 Emma Kuntz is an associate at a Washington DC law firm where her practice focuses on white collar criminal defense and securities litigation and enforcement.

Stacy Elmer began the year by traveling to Israel with her boss, the Assistant Secretary for Elmer ‘95 (second from right) and her dad, former Board Bioterrorism Stacy President Tim Elmer (third from left) are reunited with some of Preparedness Stacy’s teachers. and Emergency Response, to learn about the Israeli response system, one of the most sophisticated in the world. In July Stacy returned to Sierra Leone, West Africa where she was again working at the NarSarah Clinic and traveling to see friends. During her travels she met President Bai Koroma. When not globetrotting, Stacy has been shepherding a project she originated to use social media to help people prepare for and respond to disasters. She noticed that during the aftermath of recent disasters, people were turning more to social networking sites like Facebook rather than calling people on their cellphones. “I thought about how we can leverage that kind of behavior,” she said

in an interview with National Public Radio’s health blog Shots. The idea is to reduce pressure on jammed phone lines, since people would use social media sites to reconnect in the event of an emergency. In August, the Assistant Secretary’s office launched Stacy’s idea: the Lifeline Facebook App Challenge, a contest for developers to help people prepare for the worst in a health emergency. Stacy and two co-authors published an article on the subject in The New England Journal of Medicine.(see p. 7) Stacy returned to Topeka this fall to serve as a bridesmaid in TCS classmate Kelly Farmer’s ‘95 wedding.

She spoke to Topeka Collegiate students about unconventional careers in health, like hers. While she never imagined a career in health policy when she was a middle school student, Stacy says, “because of what I learned here at TCS, I was able to take on new challenges easily.”

Kelly Farmer is newly married. She tied the knot October 1 with Sean Brough, an Irishman she met while studying abroad.

Kelly graduated from the Royal Veterinary College of the University of London with her DVM in the spring and moved home to Topeka to plan her wedding.

Kelly’s sisters Miranda ‘91 and Katie ‘98 Kelly Farmer, husband Sean Brough and ring bearer Baloo were members of the bridal party as were TCS classmates Stacy Elmer ‘95 and Cameron Ellis ‘95. Cameron was the bride’s “best man” and escorted Stacy down the aisle. The bride and groom’s dog Baloo, a Rottweiler-German Shepherd mix, acted as ring bearer. Kelly has joined a veterinary practice in Kansas City where the newlyweds are making their home after a honeymoon to Aspen, Colorado.

she studied drawing and animation and taught three undergraduate drawing courses. This summer she was an artist-in-residence at the Hungarian Multicultural Center. Her drawings were on exhibit in Berlin and Budapest. In the spring, she created two short animations that were shown at film festivals around the Midwest and in Hungary. 1997 Laura Jensen Adams celebrated her wedding last October in Kansas City. She and her husband combined their last names; he is D. Jensen Adams.

Laura is a water engineer at Black and Veatch where her work focuses on river restoration and stormwater management that Laura Jensen Adams weds D. Jensen Adams incorporates vegetation, neatly combining her interests in rivers, ecology, and landscapes. The couple is deeply involved in the development of the Metropolitan Energy Center’s Project Living Proof, a residential demonstration of smart grid technology, energy efficiency and green renovation strategies. The demonstration house is next door to theirs and open to visitors, so Laura welcomes everyone in the TCS family to come see the latest in energy efficiency and conservation. Laura also reports, “My parents have replaced us kids with a herd of cattle and they are enjoying life at the ranch.”

Ben Bammes graduated this summer from Baylor College of Medicine with a PhD in biophysics. He is now running his own company under what Ben Bammes, Parker, Stephanie and Elliott he jokes is “the incredibly creative title of Bammes Enterprises, LLC.” His company works with businesses, especially startups, to develop applications and marketing strategies for scientific and high-tech products or services. Ben and his wife Stephanie added to their family late this summer when Parker Benjamin joined 2-year-old Elliott. They - 13 -

Barrie Garrett Lamberton (T) lives in Tulsa with her husband Jeremy, a filmmaker and photographer, on a 500-acre ranch with a big garden and lots of animals. They just finished building a house that Barrie designed with her dad, former TCS Board President Pat Garrett.

Barrie teaches children’s art classes and sells handmade goods through Lone Chimney - the company she founded with her mom Brenda.

Jared Kofron (Nance) is on schedule to graduate this summer with his PhD in nuclear physics from the University of Washington at Seattle. He says most of his time is spent working on research.

Stacie Kossoy took time from the demanding job of running her own early childhood school in Washington DC, KIPP DC: Grow Academy, to speak to the Class of 2011 at two of her alma maters’ graduation ceremonies in the spring Topeka Collegiate and Topeka High School. (see p. 9) We can only imagine that the next invitation will come from Grinnell College, Stacie’s third alma mater.

Nikhil Parulkar (T) performed a random act of kindness that led him back to TCS on the eve of a move to California. On Random Acts of Kindness Day in February, third grade teacher Dallas Bauer asked her students for examples of random acts of kindness in the community. Another said you could wait for someone to reach the door even if they were far away. The next night Ms. Bauer was leaving a bookstore and even though she was some distance from the exit, a young man waited and held both doors

for her. Ms. Bauer thought, “This is exactly the kind of person I want our third grade scholars to be when they grow up.” Turns out that young man was alum Nikhil Parulkar. He recognized Ms. Bauer’s Collegiate t-shirt, and within a week, he was in her classroom sharing a PowerPoint presentation about kindness. It was so well received he was invited to speak to Middle School students, as well.

Alexis Rowe works in an adult medical day center as a social worker and lives and plays in New York City. She traveled with her boyfriend to Cancun for vacation in May and “literally did nothing but sit on the beach and read. It was glorious!” This fall she visited Topeka and Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she attended college, for weddings and other events, and says, “I was so happy to see some of my fellow TCS alums at the Topeka High reunion.”

Alexandra was admitted to the Kansas Bar in September and is working for the State Board of Healing Arts pursuing a career in health law.

Sarah Temple is in her last year of residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

She and her husband Angus have decided to stay in the Bradenton-Sarasota area where Sarah plans to work in one of the local emergency departments. They are enjoying having her family close since they moved to Florida from Kansas.

Sarah already has her post-residency celebration planned: “We are looking forward to the 2012 Olympics in London this summer!”

Rohini Thukral received her master’s degree in public policy with a specialization in education policy from the University of Southern California a year-and-a-half ago. She moved back to the DC area where she works as an education policy consultant and business analyst for a consulting firm. Her current client is the special education division of the State Superintendent of Education for DC. Rohini says, “I love my job and couldn’t live in a better city!”

1998 Alexandra Blasi (Bixler) graduated from Washburn University in May with a Juris Doctor and a Master in Business Administration. During her final semester, she completed research on the managerial skills of healthcare and business students in the US and China, which included - 14 -

Kathleen Daughety is living in Denver and has joined the investor relations team at Liberty Media to develop the Women’s eCommerce Network. As she worked on Colorado Senator Michael Bennet’s successful election campaign, Kathleen became interested in private sector job creation, so she decided to leave politics to work with entrepreneurs. Her project launched this fall, pairing five female-led eCommerce startups with ten industry leaders for a project-driven mentorship program.

Rachael Greene Sokoloff is serving a federal clerkship for the Honorable Judge Ferdinand Fernandez of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, California.

David Kelly (T) is an independent filmmaker in New York and creator of what he describes as the first anthology horror web series What Lurks Beyond. This year brought recognition in an important industry magazine, Rue Morgue, and an interview on the Independent Collective blog as part of a series about do-it-yourself filmmakers. Dave is working on a comic book with a friend. “I write, she draws,” he says, “and we just published what we call Issue #0 which is a sneak peek of what’s to come.” The first full issue will be available in early 2012.

complete, she is concentrating on her dissertation addressing the cultural side of geography: place attachment, rurality and sense-of-place in postbust mining towns. Her research focuses on towns that survive against the odds in isolated or rugged landscapes. For fun, she’s been surveying students to create “scratch ‘n sniff ” maps of the US, where she says subtle perceptions of places emerge. Kansans say Colorado smells of “fresh air,” for example, while Missouri smells of “ashtray.” Stephanie and her musician boyfriend split their time between Ouray, Colorado and Lawrence. “While in Ouray,” she says, “I do research and sell art and jewelry at a gallery.

While at KU, I teach, tutor and help restore our old house with our yellow cat and black hound dog!”

Allison Viola Loftus’ family, friends and former teachers are extremely proud of her recent recognition for outstanding teaching. Allison teaches fifth grade math and social studies at

a public school in Dallas. One of her students nominated her for the Dallas Mavericks/UPS Store Teacher Recognition Program, saying in part, “Every time I don’t get something, Mrs. Loftus helps me until I get it right.” Allison was one of only ten teachers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area selected as winners. She and the others were honored on the basketball court during halftime of a Mavericks game in April. Allison and her school each received $1,000. The school’s portion “went to our Play Day at the end of the year,” says Allison. “My students were thrilled!”

Wesley West has recently begun a new job in New York City as a Vice President of Chase Bank’s retail strategy. His commute has shrunk from 12 hours of flying (as an international

business consultant) to eight minutes of walking, and he’s realizing that NYC is a pretty fun place to live. In his spare time, Wes continues to “rock climb, kill ferns, watch robots Wesley West performs a wedding ceremony fight, fall madly in like with beautiful travel companions and officiate marriages!” Officiate marriages? Wes explains, “I spent many minutes getting ordained online and have parlayed this into a successful weekend gig performing ceremonies for friends.”

Recent ceremonies include a surprise wedding in Columbus Circle (the bride knew they were getting married, but didn’t know when) and a maritime wedding atop choppy waters. Wes quotes the couples’ parents as saying, “To be honest, I was terrified of what he was going to say, but it was perfect.”

Blake Whitaker is a PhD candidate at Texas A&M, writing his dissertation on the amalgamation of Rhodesian Security forces with the Zimbabwean Blake Whitaker receives parachute wings Liberation armies into the Zimbabwean National Army. He spent a month in London this summer doing research at the UK’s National Archives, the Imperial War Museum and King’s College. Blake serves as an officer and paratrooper in the US Army Reserve. He participated in a September 11th Memorial Jump with the German Army and was awarded German Army Parachute Wings. “This was an excellent way to memorialize the ten-year anniversary of September 11,” he says, “and the sacrifices made by both German and American soldiers during the war in Afghanistan.”

to resettle in Portland where she is clerking for a circuit court judge. As they passed through Topeka, Chris stopped at TCS to sign a copy of the book Chris Yorke signs his book for the school library for which he traveled the world shooting photographs while he was an intern for a world-renowned treehouse designer. Chris has now been asked to design a treehouse for the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center. (see p. 32-33)

Topeka for the Greene family’s annual July 4th celebration, her Norwegian boyfriend Rune Lohr Hauge proposed! Rune and Lisa met when he was at Duke for a semester as a foreign exchange student. Their wedding is scheduled for April in Half Moon Bay, California.

Betsy Wanless Johnson married Matt Johnson in Colorado Springs in July with a beautiful mountain vista in the background. Brother Berry ‘91, and sisters Dorsey Wanless ‘93 and Sarah Wanless Abiya ‘96 were in the bridal party.

1999 Jenny Clinton Preece was married in 2009. Now living in Salt Lake City, she is in the last semester of classes training in American Sign Language. After an internship, she will begin work as an official interpreter. Jenny Clinton Preese walks down the aisle Her interest grew out of working with the deaf community during her Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints mission several years ago. Jenny reports that during a visit home to see her family, stationed at Landstuhl Army Base in Germany, she volunteered at the hospital where wounded soldiers are sent to receive long-term medical care. She calls it “one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

After a honeymoon in Moorea, French Polynesia, the couple is back home in Seattle. Betsy is cofounder and president, with Berry, of SwimZip, a company that makes rash guards - luxury swimwear with UV protection. “They have sunscreen built in,” says Betsy, “so you don’t have to slather your kids with sunscreen every couple of hours.” Recently SwimZip scored a coup when the Hollywood Hot Moms website reported that a celebrity baby trend expert sent Tori Spelling two of the swim shirts for her children.

2000 Laura Blasi (Bixler) (T) is a third-year student at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

She is interested in pediatric and emergency medicine but is thrilled with the variety of clinical settings her third year is providing. She has been active in several student organizations including the Recycling Club and the Willed Body Ceremony Committee. In her limited free time, Laura sings with the a cappella vocal ensemble Doctors’ Notes and enjoys playing the guitar. She also continues to choreograph for the Topeka Children’s Show Choir.

Kaity Heflin Tate is taking a wilderness first responder class that she hopes will help her land a job in the great outdoors as a park ranger or hiking guide. She and her husband live in Oregon where she has been tutoring math and working on farms. He is a computer repair specialist and performs several times a month in a funk rock band.

Rebecca Holmes married Matthew Leiste in Lawrence on September 17. Rebecca is the Project LIVELY coordinator for the LawrenceDouglas County Health Department. Her husband is a project coordinator for the KU School of Social Welfare’s Office of Aging and Long-Term care.

Lyndsey Kenefick has joined the Air Force to become an air traffic controller after earning her bachelor’s degree in the field. It’s a six-year commitment but she doesn’t know yet where she will be permanently stationed. Lyndsey leaves behind her life in Laguna Beach, California where she worked as a nanny, surfing and bodyboarding in her spare time.

Rebecca Kopp graduated in May with a master’s degree in art and curatorial practice in the public sphere from the University of Southern California Roski School of Fine Arts. Since then she has been engaged Rebecca Kopp receives her master’s degree in freelance and volunteer work in Los Angeles at organizations like the Oprah Winfrey Network, DWELL Media and the National Council for Jewish Women’s “Art After School” Program. Lately, Rebecca has expanded into the area of interior design and is currently working on a business plan for an entrepreneurial undertaking that will combine her - 17 -

interests in promoting artistic talent, cultivating creativity and celebrating design.

Sarah Sellers graduated from New York Law School in May. After taking the bar exam in July, she spent a week with her parents touring Tuscany from a home base in Florence and a week shopping in Milan! This fall, Sarah began her job at a midtown Manhattan law firm, doing medical malpractice defense.

2001 Sarah Bellows-Blakely is in the second year of a PhD program in history at Washington University in St. Louis, with a focus on 20th century East Africa. She spent part of the summer researching in Nairobi, Kenya. When not in the archives, Sarah enjoyed cooking, spending time with friends, exploring the city and “guarding my possessions from the troupe of very cute monkeys that lived in the backyard.”

Rachel Buck is a second year student at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans. This summer she interned for Kansas Supreme Court Justice Eric Rosen.

Shruti Challa is a Stanford graduate working in San Francisco as a serial entrepreneur. She began her first company in 2009 and launched three social products in two years. She is now advising startups in the social space. She joined a five-person company called Campfire Labs, Inc. which was recently acquired by Groupon.

She is working on two other projects under the umbrella of Shruti Challa, LLC. She serves on the board of Spark, a non-profit focused on the women’s movement in San Francisco, is working on David Chiu’s mayoral campaign and is a frequent judge of startup competitions.

She has also been featured in tech startup and entrepreneurial websites and blogs including TechCrunch, Venture Beat and 100x100.

Asona Lui successfully defended her master’s thesis at Chicago State University, the culmination of two years of research. She moved to Kansas City to begin her MD/PhD medical scientist training at the Asona Lui begins medical school University of Kansas Medical Center. She is now in medical school and plans to begin her PhD in immunology in the summer of 2013.

Ann Moenius works for Hudl, the Lincoln, Nebraska software company that the The New York Times calls the “Facebook for Football,” an online resource for coaches, athlete and recruiters. During the year she’s been there the company has doubled its client base, and is now the industry leader with, Ann is proud to say, all Topeka high schools as users. Ann volunteers for the Lincoln chapter of her Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and works parttime at a friend’s downtown boutique. Ann served as TCS classmate Stephanie Johns’ ‘01 bridesmaid this Ann Moenius is Stephanie Johns’ bridesmaid summer in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. “She was the most beautiful bride I have ever seen,” says Ann. “Stephanie’s brother Howard ‘98 walked her down the aisle and he looked as proud as her (late) dad would have looked if he was still with us.”

Jill Moenius is a third-year student at KU Law School. Last year she was on the staff of the Kansas Law Review and an article she wrote was published in the June issue. This year she is the Law Review’s Executive Note and Comment Editor. As a second-year student, Jill and her moot court partner won KU’s in-house competition and will now represent KU in the national competition. This summer she clerked for a litigation defense firm in Overland Park, and loved it. Jill “had a blast” at the Law Prom with fellow TCS alum and KU law student J.P.

Eric Giroux graduated number one in his KU Business School class in 2010 with a marketing degree. He is marketing director for the Briggs Auto Group and proud of the national attention he helped bring the dealership with last winter’s Meltdown Madness promotion. Cars were put on giant snow piles and contestants from around the country had to guess when the vehicles would touch the ground. Eric also has a web development business. Nike contacted him

through his site devoted to cool sneakers and Eric traveled to New York with friends to design an exclusive shoe. Eric says one of his goals is to retain his six-year hold on the title of champion of his fantasy football league which includes other TCS alum managers Daniel Bleiberg, Rohit Parulkar and Andrew Herrera-Thomas, all Class of ‘02. Eric’s son Jackson is now four, says Eric, and “he continues to teach me more than I could ever teach him.”

Amelia Maxfield is a policy specialist at Kansas Action for Children and she loves it. It is just what she wants to be doing and she is getting great training and mentoring. She is monitoring the implementation of the Affordable Health Care Act and has become something of an expert on the law and all its components. She is also working on other policy initiatives at KAC. She is studying hard for the LSAT because law school is next on her agenda.

2003 Stephanie Atwood is in her second year at Harvard Law School. She was a summer associate at the Los Angeles law firm where fellow alumna Rachael Greene Sokoloff ‘98 was formerly an associate. In an example of TCS networking, Stephanie found summer lodging in Rachael’s grandfather’s house.

Jordan Carter graduated in May from Washington University in St. Louis with degrees in women and gender studies and psychology.

She spent the summer in Topeka hanging out with her brother, TCS eighth grader Alex. In August Jordan moved to Boston, where she tutors six students in intensive math and English at a charter middle school. When she’s not working, Jordan is applying to law schools and exploring Boston, which she describes as her “new favorite city!”

Celina Garay graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville with TCS classmates Davis Wittig and Ryne Tutuska. She is working at a Topeka hospital preparing to apply to graduate school.

Further down the road I would like to implement an agriculture development program so the communities can grow and sustain their families without causing damage to their ecosystem.”

Talk about humanitarian ideals! This summer Chase Chase Hamilton translates for his dad on a medical mission in the also hopes to get in a short Dominican Republic expedition to the mountains (Cordillera Blanca) to climb with a friend.

Kathy Heflin graduated from Stanford with honors and a degree in American studies in the spring, then headed to Washington DC to work on two passions – women’s health and social justice. A recent convert to Judaism, Kathy is living with eight other Jewish recent college grads, working on issues of poverty and social justice. Kathy is counseling domestic abuse victims and advocating for them in court. Next, Kathy plans Kathy Heflin celebrates her to earn a master’s degree in Stanford graduation with sister Kaity Heflin Tate public health.

Marc Heronemus graduated from Grinnell College in May with a degree in biological chemistry. He is now assistant football coach at the University of Chicago and at press time, the Maroons were in the midst of a winning season.

Celina Garay graduates from Vanderbilt

Chase Hamilton is a first-year dental student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He founded and is Director of Amazon Projects, a non-profit located on the Amazon River in Iquitos, Peru now officially recognized by the IRS as a tax-exempt organization. Chase will spend his summer in Peru establishing a framework for the work his group will be doing along the Amazon. He says, “The work will be primarily dental care for the first four to six years while I am in dental school. After dental school we hope to expand to provide health care which includes preventing and alleviating infectious disease.

Megan Reynolds plans to graduate from K-State this spring with a bachelor’s degree in theater and a minor in Spanish. She sings with the Concert Choir, and looks forward to performing with the group in Dallas in March.

She is also involved with the campus Christian group Navigators. Megan won her residence hall’s award for non-staff leaders recently. After graduation she plans to pursue a graduate degree in drama therapy, saying, “I am super excited to get to use my passions for theater, music and the arts to help people.”

Caitlin Seals Schwanke graduated from Baker University in May with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and English literature and received her grades 6-12 teaching license with endorsements in English and speech/theater. She spent the fall semester finishing classes and performed in Premiere Caitlin Seals Schwanke marries Matt Ellis Ballet of Kansas City’s production of The Nutcracker. This spring she completed her student teaching at Shawnee Heights High School. The highlight of the year: Caitlin married Matt Ellis in June. They spent the summer running a camp for The Villages in Topeka and Lawrence, and both are teaching this fall; Matt in Lawrence, Caitlin as a gifted facilitator and language arts teacher in Topeka.

Ryne Tutuska graduated from Nashville’s Vanderbilt University in the spring and began working at Google’s corporate headquarters in Mountain View, California as part of the Digital Content and Commerce team. Ryne says he’s excited to be working for “an innovative company like Google.”

Eric Wang graduated from Washington University in St. Louis in the spring with two TCS classmates. Medical school is Eric’s ultimate goal, but he’s taking a year off before applying.

This fall he is in Shanghai, China, working as a medical intern at the United Family Hospital. In February, he begins a similar internship in Cape Town, South Africa.

Davis Wittig graduated from Vanderbilt University in the spring and is working in New York as an investment banking analyst at Lazard, the firm where he interned as a college student.

He and younger brother Cyrus ‘05 roomed together this summer while Cyrus was interning at Merrill Lynch.

Erin Atwood was one of ten KU seniors selected for the ExCel award (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership), designed to recognize students for their involvement and leadership on campus. Erin rode in the back of a convertible in the homecoming parade and onto the football field at half time. Earlier this year, she went to Cape Town, South Africa for a medical internship, rotating through departments at Erin Atwood is honored at KU Homecoming a public hospital for a month. “I learned a lot about HIV and TB,” she says, “and how prevalent these diseases are in this area. I also had time to explore the country on the weekends. South Africa is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.” After a few weeks at home, Erin left to study abroad for the spring semester in Lima, Peru. She took classes with Peruvian students and volunteered at a center for children and adults with disabilities.

“I had a really great host family and met some wonderful people,” she says. “I hope to go back soon.”

Liz Brownback says this has been a year of big changes. She is working as a video editor for the creative services department of Leggett & Platt, a

Fortune 500 company in Carthage, Missouri. Fear not, says Liz, “I would never live in Missouri if I can live in Kansas so I actually live in Pittsburg, Kansas and commute each day. Moving from Los Angeles to Pittsburg was quite the adjustment but I am incredibly lucky to have gotten a job so quickly after graduation so I’ll endure the culture (or lack of culture) shock!” Liz graduated a year early, summa cum laude, in May with a BA from Loyola Marymount University in film production and an emphasis in editing.

Paige Conlin is working toward a respiratory therapist degree at Washburn. She works parttime at Jayhawk Patient Supply as a certified mastectomy fitter and enjoys helping postoperative breast cancer patients. She has received certification as an orthotic fitter, as well.

Austin Gideon will graduate from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia in May, then head to work for an investment bank in San Francisco. Austin interned at the firm in May, and worked the rest of the summer at a firm in Menlo Park, California that manages money for endowments and foundations including Washington and Lee’s endowment. Says Austin, “It was a great cultural experience.”

Atima Lui spent the summer working as a marketing intern for Google, helping build their international strategy for a computer without a hard drive, the Chromebook.

Google sent Atima to Ireland for a week to work Atima Lui interns at Google on social media strategy for one of its international business units. This fall, she’s back on campus at Washington University in St. Louis.

Benefit and recently became a licensed marriage ceremony officiant. Sam studied abroad in China this summer, completing an International Transformational Experience.

Tyler Chanay attends Washburn University and will start the Fire Science program at Kansas City Kansas Community College in January with hopes of becoming a firefighter.

Robert Hamilton is a junior at K-State, living at the Beta Theta Pi house. He received two awards from the national fraternity this summer; one for composing the best original fraternity song, the other recognizing him as the outstanding chapter historian. No doubt Collegiate’s History Day had something to do with this! Robert is studying music and science education. As a first tenor in the K-State Choir, he will sing in Dallas for the National Conference of Choral Directors.

The K-State Choir was one of the few choirs selected for this prestigious honor. Robert also toured Italy with the choir over spring break. He has been volunteering as a choral conductor at a junior high school in Manhattan, where he works with the young men’s ensemble.

Michael Myers is a junior at the University of Kansas, a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, with biology and pre-dental majors.

Seth Wiley is a junior at KU majoring in human biology. He has some 25 hours of Russian under his belt. He took one class, liked it, and kept going.

2005 Sam Blasi (Bixler) (T) is in his third year at Washburn, working toward his bachelor’s degree.

Anna Hamilton is a sophomore public health major with a minor in economics at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Sjobor Hammer is majoring in cognitive science and minoring in classics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. She joined the Sigma Psi sorority and has been inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

This summer Sjobor traveled to France Sjobor Hammer on a trip to France for a two-week study of Roman Gaul, traveling from Paris to Marseilles and studying Roman ruins. After TCS teacher Gail Franklin introduced her to Russian this summer, Sjobor is taking Russian at school, along with Latin, at the encouragement of the Latin teachers on the Gaul tour.

Weston McCully (T) is a sophomore at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he is pursuing a two-year architecture curriculum. He is looking toward an aerospace manufacturing program this winter.

Emily Park is a sophomore at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri where she is majoring in fashion communication with an integrated media minor. She’s a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and pitches for the Stephens softball team. She is treasurer of PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America), received 2011 Academic AllConference honors and is on the Dean’s List with high honors. Emily also mentors a nine-year-old through Big Brothers Big Sisters.

A.J. Alifimoff (T) is a freshman at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. He graduated from Canterbury High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, cum laude, as a National AP Scholar and salutatorian. He placed in the final round of the NFL (National Forensics League) National Speech and Debate tournament in Congressional Debate, and was top speaker at the Princeton Classic in Public Forum Debate. He is working as the webmaster at the Stanford Daily. In April, A.J. wrote to his Topeka Collegiate kindergarten teacher, Kelley Berryman, to say, “I think I was in your first kindergarten class. Now I’m about to graduate high school. I often find it hard to compare teachers across grades or subjects, let alone across decades, but I believe you were one of my favorite teachers, if not the very best!”

Maggie Ault graduated from Topeka High with honors, earning academic and athletic scholarships to Washburn after a standout high school soccer career.

She received all-state honors following her sophomore, junior and Maggie Ault plays soccer at Washburn senior seasons, scored the match-winning goal in the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association all-star game, earned allcity, all-league and all-region honors and was nominated for the Most Inspirational Athlete for Shawnee County after her senior season. Maggie plays for Washburn’s Lady Blues soccer team, and is majoring in nursing.

Joseph Barber is finishing high school in New Zealand, which is five years instead of four. He has a list of prospective colleges, including some in the US, and will apply to begin in the fall of 2012.

Cameron Seals Schwanke is a sophomore at Wichita State University studying aerospace engineering. This summer he hiked Pike’s Peak for the second time and volunteered at the International Air Show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

He also served as the best man in his sister Caitlin’s ‘03 wedding.

Joel Billinger graduated from Topeka High with superior honors, as one of four TCS alums in the top one percent of their class, named winners of the Governor’s Scholars Award. Joel - 22 -

is studying engineering at KU where he received Summerfield and Dean’s Scholarships and was admitted to the Honors Program. He was president of Topeka High Debate as a senior and played lead guitar in a rock band with friends.

Parker Conlin graduated with honors from Washburn Rural High School. He is a freshman at KU majoring in business and pre-dentistry.

He is enjoying college life and is involved with the intramural water skiing team. Parker also continues the lawn business that he began as a 14-year-old.

John Connor Copeland graduated from Topeka High in May with honors, earning Wiseman, mathematics and athletic scholarships to Washburn University. He walked onto the football team as a place kicker but has been redshirted due to knee surgery.

Aliyah Durant is a freshman at Washburn majoring in biology after graduating from Highland Park High School with honors at the age of 16.

She was a homecoming queen candidate her senior year, played volleyball Aliyah Durant as a homecoming and basketball, and was a queen candidate cheerleader. Aliyah was one of two TCS alums nominated for the 2011 YWCA Future Leaders Scholarship.

Lauren Gernon graduated in the top 1% of her Topeka High School class, earning superior honors and the Governor’s Scholars Award. As a senior, Lauren Gernon is flanked by mom Lauren won the YWCA’s Ximena Garcia and grandmother Charlene Gernon after winning Future Leader Award Future Leader Award, given to a young woman who shows outstanding leadership potential through her involvement in extracurricular activities, community service and academic achievement. Lauren served as president of the Topeka High chapter of the National Honor Society, organizing members to read to children in elementary schools around Topeka, and held the office of vice president of the National English Honor Society. She also helped with childcare for parents taking ESL classes in the community. Lauren is a freshman at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Alex Henriquez graduated in May from Lawrence High School as a National Achievement Semifinalist and a National Merit Commended Student. He earned the Dean’s Scholarship and Clarence Beecher Allen Scholarship at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, where he is a freshman.

Jonah Freed is a freshman at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was awarded the Oak Park Arms Scholarship for his volunteer service in his community, as well as an academic scholarship Jonah Freed gradutes from high from the college. Jonah is school as sister Brigid graduates from eighth grade interested in international studies, a popular major at Macalester, which boasts a diverse, multinational student body and a high number of international faculty members.

Myriah Holt is a freshman at Washburn University majoring in music education. She earned Washburn’s White Music and Wiseman Scholarships, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s Fashionetta Scholarship. Myriah gives Myriah Holt visits language arts teacher John MacDonald individual piano lessons and worked as a music instructor at the Salvation Army, teaching piano to 2-to-7-year-old students.

Her senior piano recital in the spring featured an impressive repertoire including classical selections from Chopin and Rachmaninoff as well as a medley of gospel songs. Myriah sings

Katie Jones is a freshman at Washburn after graduating from Topeka High School. She received the Melody Brown, Ayers and Wiseman Scholarships.

Katherine Linquist (T) graduated from Washburn Rural High School with honors. She is a freshman at Hope College, a small Christian school in Holland, Michigan, where she was awarded a Distinguished Scholar scholarship and is studying dance. Katherine went on a mission trip to Ecuador this summer.

Daniel Kennedy graduated from Topeka High School with superior honors, earning all A’s throughout his high school career. He and three fellow TCS alums make up the Daniel Kennedy and David Wang top 1% of their high speak at Topeka High School graduation school graduating class, earning them the Governor’s Scholars Award.

Daniel is a National Hispanic Scholar, a National Merit Commended Student, and recipient of the National Honor Society Senior Award. He was senior class president and one of only two student speakers at graduation, both of them TCS alums. (see p. 4) Daniel was one of the three TCS alumni members of the five-member Scholars’ Bowl team last year. The team took second place in the state. Daniel and David Wang ‘07 entered Topeka High in the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge to have President Barack Obama speak at graduation, collaborating on three essays and a two-minute documentary they submitted to the White House. This summer Daniel spent two months in Latin America, visiting family in Guatemala, traveling to El Salvador to watch his cousin Ruthi participate in the - 24 -

Central American Track Championship, and sightseeing in Mexico. Daniel is a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis, where he won both the Rodriguez and Elliott scholarships, which cover his full tuition. He plans to major in anthropology and international area studies with a minor in public health.

David Wang was valedictorian of his Topeka High School class, graduating with superior honors and sharing the speakers’ podium with two fellow TCS alums: class president Daniel Kennedy ‘07 and commencement speaker Stacie Kossoy ‘97. (see p. 4) David is a National Merit Finalist and won a National Merit scholarship after being chosen from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists as one of those with the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

David was named an All-State Academic Scholar by the Topeka Capital-Journal. He and three TCS classmates finished in the top 1% of their high school class, and were designated Governor’s Scholars. David never earned anything less than an A at Topeka High, and was a member of the National Honor Society. He also qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination based on his scores on the AMC (American Mathematics Competition). David is a freshman on full-tuition scholarship at Washington University in St. Louis, where he was awarded both Ervin and Danforth Scholarships. He also made the varsity soccer team.

They are ranked number one in 6A and in the state, 25th in the Adidas poll for the region and 48th in the ESPN national poll.

Shelby Carpenter is a senior at Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts. Last year she spent four weeks in Petrozavodsk, Russia, living with a host family and studying Russian.

She was struck by the mix of old ways and modern conveniences. “There are cars, TVs, all of those luxuries,” says Shelby, “but it is still so old in many of its customs. An example is how they get drinkable water. They take big plastic jugs to this little hut near their apartment, fill up the jugs and bring them back home - like a modern-day well.” Shelby also traveled through Ireland with her Andover choir.

Alex Chanay is a senior at Topeka High School where he sings in Madrigals and Robed Choir and plays bass in the Jazz Band. Over the summer, Alex learned how to play upright string bass, spent time in the recording studio and attended KU Jazz Band camp. He is hoping to pursue a degree in songwriting next year.

Patrick Elisha graduated from Washburn Rural High School a year early, with honor graduate and outstanding scholar recognition and membership in the National Honor Society.

He is now a student of Professor Stanislav Ioudenitch at the International Center for Music at Park University in Parkville, Missouri pursuing a bachelor’s degree in piano performance. Patrick received a full-tuition Park University Trustee Scholarship and a music department scholarship.

Patrick and his family moved to Georgia this summer where his parents are now on the faculty at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

Asher Gilliland has had a very busy schedule lately. A year ago he traveled with many Collegiate friends to France and was able to see much of Paris and Normandy. Before meeting the Collegiate group in Paris, Asher and his family spent a week in Switzerland. The highlight was seeing the Matterhorn on a very clear day.

This summer he auditioned and was accepted to attend the Summer Chorale Institute at Kansas State University. At Washburn Rural he plays trombone in the marching band, participates in Chorale and has been selected to participate in the audition-only, elite singing group This Generation. Asher continues to take trombone, piano, and voice lessons. He participates in youth activities at his church, including youth choir, Praise Band and mission trips. This summer Asher spent a week in eastern Tennessee participating in a church-sponsored program to help impoverished residents of that area.

Nick Henriquez is a senior at Topeka High School. He is a National Merit Semifinalist, National Achievement Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, and scored a perfect score on his ACT. He qualified for the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) on the basis of his AMC (American Mathematics Competitions) score, and along with two fellow TCS alums, helped last year’s Scholars’ Bowl team to a second-place finish at state. Nick is a member of the National Honor Society, editor of the Topeka High newspaper The World, editor of the literary magazine Mandala and president of the school’s National English Honor Society chapter. As a junior, he was on the Knowledge Master Academic Competition team that took sixth in state both fall and spring. Perhaps the most exciting news of all for Nick: a KU student chose to produce a script he wrote, Slightly Scorched, as her senior film project. He has been invited to help with the screenplay and filming.

Nick also finds time to volunteer at the Spencer Art Museum in Lawrence.

Collegiate Life

Maura McGivern has committed to the University of Tulsa to play Division I volleyball next year.

As a senior at Hayden High School, she has been identified as one Maura McGivern (center) relaxes with volleyball teammates of the country’s top volleyball prospects, named one of the 2011 Senior Aces on PrepVolleyball.com and tracked on MaxPreps.com’s coaches’ watch list. After her high school season ends, Maura will join other Division I signees on a Kansas City volleyball team called KC Power.

Marissa Wiley is a senior at Topeka High School where she was named Homecoming Queen by a vote of the entire school. Marissa is a member of the National Marissa Wiley is crowned Topeka High Honor Society, a varsity School homecoming queen cheerleader for the third year in a row, and in her fifth year of studying dance in Kansas City three times a week. She competes in dance competitions throughout the country and loves all kinds of dance. She is looking at colleges that have strong dance programs.

Julian Mullican is a senior at Topeka High School where he enjoys dividing his time among drumline, jazz band and soccer. Julian credits his experience operating the sound system Julian Mullican on the Topeka High drumline at TCS helping him secure an internship at WIBW-TV during his junior year.

2009

Madison Myers is Topeka High School’s senior class president, a member of Topeka High’s chapter of the National Honor Society, plays on the drumline, competes as a member of the tennis team and runs his own business, Madison’s Mowing.

Hillary Rosacker is a senior at Topeka High, where she is a varsity volleyball player. She plans to study physical therapy next year and K-State is her college choice.

Bailey Evans is a junior at Topeka High School, where she was elected all-school vice president.

She is news editor of The World newspaper and plays varsity basketball.

Riley Mickelsen is a junior at Topeka High School, where she is all-school secretary, on the yearbook staff, Mu Alpha Theta (for students who excel in math and are nominated by teachers), National English Honor Society.

Riley and fellow TCS alum Bailey Evans ‘09 are planning a trip to Santiago, Panama over winter break to improve their Spanish and visit their friend Leticia, who was a foreign exchange student at Topeka High last year.

Luke Miltz is a junior at Washburn Rural High School, an honors student, class secretary, a newspaper staffer and a singer in the choir. He is also a member of the Circle of Friends Club, which matches a diverse group of students with special needs students. They eat lunch together, go to school sporting events, and in Luke’s case, participate in the Polar Plunge, the wintry dip in Lake Shawnee to benefit Special Olympics. Luke also serves as a peer tutor in an English class and is a freshman mentor. Washburn Rural opened a coffee shop this year and Luke is a barista there every day before school. He’s also a member of the youth group at his church.

Mackenzie Morrison is a junior at Topeka High and a varsity cheerleader. She is on the swim team, served as an assistant director of SRO, the student-run talent show and is the dance captain for the fall musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Irene Nicolae is playing varsity tennis as a junior at Washburn Rural High School. The team won first in the city, league and regionals, and third at state. Individually, Irene placed fifth in the region and 12th at state in the singles category. Irene is busy with AP classes and plans to participate in Scholars’ Bowl this year.

Cooper Self is a junior and a triple sports threat at Topeka High School. He lettered in soccer freshman and sophomore years and is a varsity starter this year. He is a two-year letterman in wrestling, and plays JV and occasionally varsity baseball. He plays all three sports out of season to stay in shape. This summer Cooper won third place in the Senior Individual Exhibit category of National History Day. It’s the third time he’s qualified for the national competition, the first time as a high school student. (see p. 31) Cooper also plays in his church bell choir.

Marshall Sheetz is a junior at Topeka High school, and on the varsity soccer and cheer squads. He has also participated in wrestling and track at High.

2010 Megan Anderson is a sophomore a Topeka High, playing club soccer, dancing, and cheering on the varsity squad for football. She participates in Science Olympiad, Model U.N., National English Honor Society, and Invisible Children’s Club. One of her favorite things so far is dancing in SRO, Topeka High’s student-run talent show.

Nick Badsky is a newly-minted Eagle Scout. He received his esteemed rank in an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony at Topeka Collegiate in October. TCS benefitted from his Eagle service project, which was coordinating and overseeing the painting of two large US maps on the Nick Badsky earns Eagle school playgrounds. Nick swims Scout rank for the Washburn Rural varsity team, has been a member of the Topeka Swim Team since 2008 and is a member of the All-Academic team for Missouri Valley Swimming. He’s a member of the Robotics team at Rural and volunteered at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center this summer.

Alec Berryman is a sophomore at Washburn Rural High School finding many ways to challenge himself academically and athletically.

He is on the varsity soccer team while maintaining high grades in his courses, including five honors classes. During winter and spring, he will play soccer with his club team. As a freshman, he was on the soccer, basketball, and tennis teams.

David Gernon is a sophomore at Topeka High School where he plays soccer, as he did last year.

He played spring baseball and is planning to go out for tennis this spring. David participated in forensics freshman year and was inducted into National English Honor Society this year. He volunteers at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

As a freshman, Josh was one of only two students at Washburn Rural, and the only non-senior, to qualify for the AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination) on the basis of his AMC (American Mathematics Competitions) score. This summer Josh volunteered at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

John recently helped Washburn Rural win the city cross country championship with a 19th place finish and a medal as a sophomore. Fellow TCS alum Brandon Fricke ‘10 is on the team as well and at press time, they’re hoping to do well in the regional and go on to state.

Ella Brown Richards is a freshman at Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, California. She laughs that she’s fielding a lot of questions about Kansas, to the point where her friends say it’s like being with a celebrity. “I guess being ‘that chick from Kansas’ really sticks with people,” she says.

“I just laugh and say, ‘I guess I’m not in Kansas anymore!’” Ella had a busy summer before moving to the west coast. She made her second trip to National History Day competition in College Park, Maryland with her junior individual performance, then left for a tour of Italy.

Naftali Zeilinger (T) is a high school sophomore in suburban Baltimore taking honors classes and starting as a linebacker on the varsity football team.

2011 Elena Blum is a freshman at Topeka High where she sings with the freshmen girls’ Choraliers.

She also volunteers at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center.

Maria Kingfisher is a sophomore at Topeka High School, taking a rigorous schedule of pre-AP classes as are many of her TCS classmates. She joined the choir as a freshman and was selected to sing with Robed Choir as a sophomore. She loves theater and the arts, and plans to audition for plays this year. Maria has joined the literary magazine Mandala staff as an additional outlet for self-expression. She has also made a vow to attend every varsity football and basketball game this year. Go Trojans!

This summer Maria volunteered at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center and at a day care center. She vacationed with her family in the Pacific Northwest, staying in the seaside town of Trinidad, California.

Skyler Dykes is president of her Topeka High School freshman class. She is singing with the freshmen girls’ chorus Choraliers and is in the fall musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Ryland Evans is a freshman at Topeka High School enjoying a successful novice debate season with fellow TCS alum Max Halley ‘11 as his partner.

Brigid Freed (T) is a freshman at Oak Park River Forest High School in the Chicago area, the same school from which her brother Jonah ‘07 graduated in the spring. She is one of five girls on her co-ed Under 19 club soccer team and plans to try out for high school soccer in the spring. She has taken guitar lessons and is teaching herself new songs using an Internet site, with The Tallest Man on Earth a particular favorite.

Sahil Rattan is president of the sophomore class at Washburn Rural and on the varsity debate team. He has joined the Scholar’s Bowl team and participates in Math Club and Science Olympiad. Last year, Sahil competed in debate and qualified for state, and medaled at several - 28 -

Phyllis Hoyt is Teacher of the Year Alums Send Thanks and Congratulations

Middle School Math Teacher Phyllis Hoyt has been named the Kansas Society of Professional Engineers 2011 Outstanding Middle School Teacher of the Year. The award is given to someone who “goes beyond the regular classroom curriculum and challenges and expands the students’ exposure to math and/or science.”

Mrs. Hoyt was recognized for her contribution to the field of engineering through her 27-year involvement in MATHCOUNTS. Hers is an impressive record. She has taken her team to the state competition all but four of those years. In each of those state competitions except one she has had at least one student finish in the top ten, or brought home a team trophy. She has coached teams that progressed to the national competition six times, and twice she has served as the Kansas State Team coach.

Though our school is small, Mrs. Hoyt and her students are consistently able to compete against schools with many more students.

Max Halley ‘11 won fifth place in the Junior Individual Exhibit category at National History Day in College Park, Maryland this summer, and received the Outstanding State Entry for Kansas prize for his exhibit “Conscientious Objectors in the World War II Era: Prisoners for Peace.” Now a freshman at Topeka High School, Max was inspired by - 31 -

When it was announced at State History Day that he had won in his category and qualified for the national contest, Max remembers being overcome with emotion. “I thought, ‘Grandpa, you won,’” he says. “I feel like he’s still living his dream of nonviolence.”

Laura Nicolae, now an eighth grader, represented Topeka Collegiate in the Junior Historical Papers category at National History Day and, in her second trip to nationals, Ella Brown Richards ‘11 in the Junior Individual Performance category.

Kansas Children’s Discovery Center Attracts TCS Alumni Opened in the spring of 2011, the Kansas Children’s Discover Center is Topeka’s hands-on, interactive children’s museum. Exhibits encourage discovery and exploration, emphasizing math, science and the arts. They call it Serious Fun!

Just as they had a vision for Topeka Collegiate School more than 30 years ago, Founders Susan and Kent Garlinghouse had a more recent vision for a children’s museum, a place of learning and discovery that would enrich the lives of Topeka families. Both are now realities.

Perhaps because both KCDC and TCS are places where learning is celebrated, there are many connections. Collegiate third and fourth graders created artwork for an event before the grand opening, and students welcomed donors as they arrived at a gala.

Susan Garlinghouse is delighted that so many Collegiate alumni volunteer at the museum.

“I’m excited that our graduates can enjoy being kids themselves,” she says, “and pass along the love of learning instilled in them - 32 -

at Topeka Collegiate.” Maria Kingfisher ‘10 loves children. “It’s really fun to be able to work with them and make them smile,” she says.

David Gernon ‘10 thinks the best part is “being able to help KCDC be successful.”

Josh Greene ’10 admits to enjoying the opportunities to act like a kid himself; “to play with the grains while you work, and move around the conveyer belts (in the grain exhibit area).” For Thomas Coates ‘10 it’s fun to watch the children’s expressions.

“Four-year-olds can’t believe they’re using real tools (in the tool shop) or moving grain,” he says. “They say, ‘This is what real farmers do, Mommy!’”

questions,” he says.

Coming from a social science background, he thinks science and the humanities are parts of the same family. “It’s all about asking questions about the world around you,” he explains.

“Philosophy is about Josh Greene ’10 and Mollie Miller internal, human ’11 have fun as KCDC volunteers things; science is about external things.” Javin’s curiosity about the world stems from “a very good science education, including Topeka Collegiate’s, where science is fun and you learn the relevancy of it.” He describes leading children on daily journeys of discovery as “the best job I’ve ever had!”

Yet another alumnus is involved in the KCDC. Chris Yorke ’98, fresh from earning his master’s degree in architecture at Princeton has signed on to design a treehouse for the outdoor exhibit area.

Auction Transports Us Back to the Future “If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!”

Three Co-Chairs who had chaired the auction before signed on to do it again, confident they could accomplish great things. And did they ever! Tracey Goering, Debra RicksCopley and Barbara Shapiro and their team of volunteers helped make Auction 2011 memorable, successful and fun. Back to the Future: Looking Back to Move Forward raised more than $160,000 to support our school’s operating budget.

Thank you to those who raised their bid numbers during the Professional Development section of the auction.

Through their generosity, we were able to provide just over $30,000 in continuing education and professional training for our faculty and staff. Below you’ll see how the funds were allocated. (see graph on page 35).

conference. All came back with new ideas they plan to implement in their classrooms.

“I was introduced to a math puzzle called KenKen. It is similar to Sudoku, but requires addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve. This is a fun, challenging way for our scholars to practice their math facts and mathematical thinking.”

Myers Family Scholarship Opportunity: a chance, especially one that offers some kind of advantage Bruce, Kathy, Michael ‘05 and Madison Myers ‘08 are providing an opportunity for a bright, deserving student to attend Topeka Collegiate Middle School. Bruce and Kathy have established the Myers Family Scholarship, which makes it possible for a child to attend TCS who would not otherwise have the financial ability to do so. The scholarship is need- and merit-based, and covers the recipient’s full tuition, fees, books and lunches. The scholarship is awarded to a child on the threshold of Middle School.

Bruce and Kathy the desire to provide more opportunities for their own family. Bruce says he and Kathy have been blessed so they want to “give somebody a boost, help somebody out - because it’s the right thing to do.”

“Lots of other people have done a lot of wonderful things for our school,” says Bruce.

“Ours is just a piece of the puzzle.”

Bruce and Kathy aspire to do nothing less than create a “transformative, life-changing experience” for a child who is excited about learning and a family that is motivated to change its history. The couple’s parents came from humble backgrounds, which gave

A Message From the Board of Trustees

The Annual Report on the pages that follow covers the 2010-2011 fiscal year, which ended on August 31, 2011, and includes all of the last school year.

The overall financial picture improved from the previous fiscal year, although we continued to deal with the related challenges of a struggling economy, enrollment numbers lower than we would like and a greater need for financial aid for deserving families.

Last year we were able to maintain employee salaries and benefits, unlike the year before, when we made some painful cuts in benefits. We asked our faculty and staff to find creative ways to deliver our highquality curriculum, capitalizing on our teachers’ strengths and making sure every dollar was used wisely. They responded by providing challenging, loving learning environments that allowed students to thrive.

Last year’s Annual Fund and Auction exceeded the budgeted goals. With gratitude, we recognize the parent volunteers who chaired those efforts.

Under the leadership of Mindy Bowman and Sherry Miltz, Annual Fund set a new parent participation record of 85.8% - powerful evidence of parents’ commitment to our school. The Back to the Future Auction, chaired by three veterans, all of whom had chaired before, was not only fun but successful, thanks to Co-Chairs Tracey Goering, Debra RicksCopley and Barbara Shinn.

The past year marked the birth of two new funds with a common purpose: to help make it possible for deserving students to receive a Topeka Collegiate education. Kathy and Bruce Myers, who sent their two boys to Middle School at TCS, generously established the Myers Family Scholarship to create a life-changing opportunity for a gifted student who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend our school.

Many of Mr. Patterson’s friends and admirers - 38 -

established the Dick Patterson Fund at the end of last year, as a way to honor him for his twoand-a-half years as Head of School. Given his lifelong love of children, it seemed that the most appropriate and lasting tribute would be one that benefitted children. Awards from this fund are made to deserving students who qualify for financial aid and demonstrate one or more of Mr. Patterson’s admirable character traits.
