From the
Hey there, sunshine lovers—
uly is here, the wind is behind us, and El Paso is practically humming with good vibes and Coldplay afterglow (because yes—we were the only Texas stop, and yes—90,000 of you lit up the Sun Bowl like a sky full of stars).
This issue is all about the magic of people. The wonderfully quirky, the unexpectedly inspiring, and the human stories that make this city feel like a warm tortilla straight off the grill. From quiet do-gooders to loudlaughers, we’re raising a glass (or paleta) to the personalities who color outside the lines and make El Paso shine.
As you flip through the pages, you might feel something a little... different. Maybe it’s the sunshine, maybe it’s the season, or maybe it’s just life giving us a little nudge and saying, “Hey—turn the page.” I’ve always believed life flips faster than the pages of a good magazine—and here we are, caught somewhere between the titles and the stories. Riding the breeze of change with one hand on our hearts and the other gripping an Aperol Spritz like it’s the last one in Tuscany.
I have a personal request. This month, as you flip through the magazine, take a moment to linger. Breathe in the perfume of the ink, the
texture of the paper, the little joys of what’s been, and the excitement of what’s to come. Erin’s packed this issue like your favorite overnight bag: something timeless, something bold, and always something you didn’t know you needed.
I hope we’ve always been more than glossy pages. We’ve been a little wink at your morning coffee, a warm hug on your lunch break, and the friend who always told you which mascara “actually” works and where to go for the best highlights. But maybe, just like your favorite pair of heels— it’s time we strut off the page and into whatever’s next. So, soak up the stories, laugh out loud, and let yourself be reminded that some of the best chapters are the ones you didn’t expect.
Here’s to turning up the music when life changes the beat.
With laughter and “forever” love for our readers,

@shelleymozelle shelley@thecitymagazineelp.com

From the

hen UTEP Special Events sent the press release announcing Coldpay’s tour stops at the Sun Bowl, I knew it was going to be big – like, BIG, big. Sure enough, it didn’t take long for the Star on the Mountain to shine in rainbow colors in honor of the shows, as well as a full-on PR strategy from LiveNation that included performances on The Today Show, ads, and so much more.
Big deal, indeed.
Despite the hype, at the concert, although frontman Chris Martin and bandmates did a stellar job performing some of Coldplay’s most beloved songs, what took center stage was love.
Starting with the heat.
No one loves the mid-June temps in El Paso, the sweat in weird places, the mental calculations of whether you put on enough sunscreen, and just how available water will be at the outdoor venue. But, the night I went to the concert, those concerns/ complaints took a back seat as I watched generations of families share drinks while waiting in line to enter the Sun Bowl, loved ones taking turns shading each other from the sun, and exclamations of excitement from passersby.
“We’re so lucky we get to see this together,” one said. Of course, she was right.
Coldplay covering our July issue is especially fitting for our human interest issue. Over the last two years, the band’s tour has been connecting people across the globe while also encouraging and supporting conservation efforts, empathy, and an escape from doomscrolling.
Similarly, this issue is dedicated to some of the community’s most inspiring stories.
From the opening of Pearl Divers, Martin Armendariz and Noelle Coley’s newest restaurant concept in Union Plaza that brings east coast chic to the heart of downtown, to The Falstaff that continues to serve as a hub for human connection and gatherings, to a florist who didn’t let a bully stop her from blooming.
My interest in the human interest issue is always driven by the same question…
Who is quietly inspiring the community?
There’s a lyric in Coldplay’s “The Scientist,” ‘you don’t know how lovely you are,’ I found myself coming back to as I put this issue together.
And, that’s where I come in – to show good and inspiring people (and the community in which they live) how lovely they are.
May we all feel like rockstars on some days.

OystersAway!

| By: ERIN COULEHAN photography by: KATHERINE KOCIAN |

Before pearls became symbols of elegance and mystery, they were created from a quiet determination, an oyster’s answer to an unwelcome grain of sand. Layer by lustrous layer, irritation transforms into iridescence, crafting the sea’s most precious gem in secret that’s since become a luxury.
Similarly, the city’s latest downtown gem is introducing a new wave of culinary exploration inside the heart of Union Plaza one sip and slurp at a time.
Pearl Divers, a raw and martini bar, opened its doors at the end of June and is the latest project from Noelle Coley and Martin Armendariz, the husband-and-wife duo behind the Tiki Room.
Located directly next door to the Tiki Room, Pearl Divers delivers West Coast breeziness with East Coast sophistication.
“We’re so excited to bring Pearl Divers to life. It’s something we’ve been dreaming up for a while – a raw bar that feels both elevated and approachable, with that big-city energy but

rooted right here in El Paso,” says Noelle Coley, co-owner and operator. “We’re lucky to be part of the Union Plaza revival, and hope Pearl Divers becomes a place where people gather, linger, and always find something fresh – on the plate and in the experience.”
The concept for the new venture is inspired by the culinary couples’ love of travel and a special tradition they decided to bring home.
“Every time we traveled, we’d end up at either a tiki bar or an oyster bar. So when we started talking about doing something together, oysters just made sense. The food and the menu are totally in Martin’s wheelhouse,” says Coley.
The location, which is also connected to the Tiki Room, became available at the right time and they jumped in.
“We just built the kind of place we love to go to when we’re out of town: daytime oysters, cocktails, good vibes. Now, we get to bring that experience here,” Coley says.

The menu features seasonal crudo, New England clam chowder, fresh salad, premium tinned fish selectsion, and – of course – a rotating lineup of oysters flown in from both coasts. The fare boasts seasonal ingredients and local sourcing designed to ensure the experience is fresh and always evolving.
“We get the oysters through food suppliers and some specialty distributors online. They’re
flown in fresh, alive, and we maintain strict quality control to keep everything super fresh,” explains Chef Armendariz. Part of our mission is making this feel accessible and approachable. We’ve had guests tell us they hadn’t had oysters in 25 years, and they finally tried one again here. That’s the best.”
Perhaps more familiar is Pearl Divers drink program, which features crisp martinis, cold bubbles, as well as a curated selection

of natural and conventional wines that complement not only the food, but also the Borderland’s hot summer nights.
“It’s a classic combination,” says Coley. “The brightness and salinity of oysters work beautifully with the crispness of a vodka or gin martini. They’ve been paired together for ages. We also offer a Pimm’s Cup, an old British cocktail actually invented by a guy who had an oyster bar. Our cocktail menu
How to Eat Oysters: A Beginner’s Guide
1. Check for Freshness
Your oyster should be served on a bed of ice, smell like the ocean (not fishy), and still be resting in its natural briny liquid. If it smells off, don’t eat it!
2. Loosen the Oyster
Use the small fork provided to gently loosen the oyster from the shell if it’s still attached. This makes it easier to slurp.
3. Choose Your Garnish
Classic toppings include: queeze of fresh lemon
• A dab of cocktail sauce or horseradish
• A spoonful of mignonett
• A splash of hot sauc
Bring the oyster shell to your lips, tilt it, and slurp the oyster into your mouth. Yes,slurp! That’s the fun part.
5. Chew (Don’t Just Swallow)
Many first-timers think you should swallow oysters whole, but a couple gentle chews help you actually taste the buttery, briny flavor.
6. Sip and Repeat
Pair it with a crisp martini, sparkling wine, or a cold beer. Take your time and try different toppings to

is focused on classics and lost recipes that deserve a comeback.”
So, what’s the best way to enjoy Pearl Divers?
Chef Armendariz recommends starting small, maybe with half a dozen oysters.
“They’re all pretty mild, nothing too briny or intense. Try them with lemon, horseradish, or our mignonette. We also have Crystal hot sauce on the tables; it’s a little New Orleans touch,” he says.
Whether you’re savoring a briny oyster, sipping a perfectly chilled martini, or simply soaking in the ambiance, this pearl and martini bar invites you to indulge in life’s little luxuries (no diving gear required).
While the pearls may be absent from the shell, trust: nothing’s missing.

Stop and Smell the
Roses
Florist Daisy Guadarrama had no idea she would get fired from her fast-food job and start her own flower business, let alone go viral on social media for getting heckled over selling those flowers.
This past June, Guadarrama stood outside the Don Haskins Center with her kids and sold flowers as part of her business, Flowers by Daiz, determined to prevail against the heat when a woman came up to her and started giving her a hard time.
“She had turned and looked at the flowers and stared at them with such hate in her eyes,”

she says. “She told me that I wasn’t going to sell anything and that my flowers were going to die, so I should leave. We weren’t doing anything wrong. We were just trying to make some money.”
The video, which was recorded by her daughter and originally posted on TikTok, went viral and was reposted on FitFam, the popular “all things El Paso” Instagram account.
Rather than focusing on the negativity, she chose to see the positive from the encounter, as well as the support that blossomed over the comment section.
“I am beyond grateful,” she says. “The support means that not only am I growing, but my family is growing.”
Guadarrama started her business by making eternal flowers, flowers made from fabric, as an anniversary gift for her husband.
“I had seen a few videos on social media and wanted to try them out,” she says. “The first few

I made were horrible, but then I progressed and coworkers of mine started asking me if I could make them some. I would only charge them enough to cover my material, and it just picked up from there.”
Although it started as a hobby, she decided to become a full-time florist working out of her home after getting let go. The “9-5” workstyle she was used to changed and she needed to adjust.
Luckily, Guadarrama says her family supported her during this transition.
“We joke about how even though the business is called Flowers by Daiz, we should have named it ‘Flowers by Daisy and Ricky or Flowers by Daiz and family,’” she laughs. “My husband always helps me out. If we see people at the store picking flowers, he always goes up to them and hands them my business cards.”
Using social media and word of mouth to market herself, Guadarrama’s business began to bloom without letting the heat kill her growth.
“It’s just a passion,” she says. “We have to appreciate every beauty. From a daisy to a rose, they are all so unique. That’s why, despite the heat, you have to keep pushing and remind yourself to appreciate life’s opportunities. No matter what kind of situation you’re in, you just have to turn around and look at the flowers and try to be just as strong as them.”
Small businesses often face challenges along the way, but instead of seeing each other as competitors, it’s far more powerful to offer support – because lifting up one business helps strengthen the entire community.
“The sun comes up for everyone,” she said. “I see my fellow florists as colleagues. The only competition I have is with myself and that’s just so I can better myself as a business owner and a florist. When I see someone win, I feel like I’m winning, too.”
Guadarrama plans to spread her love and knowledge in the future by hosting classes and hopes to one day open her own brickand-mortar.
“I’m beyond grateful that I get to be included in special moments,” she says. “From ‘I just miss her’ to ‘I’m going to propose,’ my business being a part of those moments means a lot to me.”
Guadarrama built a thriving business that not only supports her family, but also fosters a community centered around supporting local businesses and encouraging kindness, even toward those who may not reciprocate it.
She has been using the hashtag #elsolsaleparatodos, which translates to “the sun comes out for everyone” on her social media to continue advocating for kindness.
“There’s enough sun for all of us,” she says. “I use that hashtag because we all have opportunities. Whatever it is that people are selling, our community is large enough that we can all support one another, which also helps support our families. There are going to be good times and bad times, but sometimes you just need to stop and smell the roses.”

Fostering Creativity atThe Falstaff
|

ELISHA NUÑNEZ |
Have you noticed a bright beacon nestled in one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods? Located in Central El Paso alongside wholesale businesses and breweries, The Falstaff is a hundred-year-old complex that shines under the bright summer sun, inviting passersby to enter and discover what lies behind its walls.
Built in 1905, this complex was once a beer plant named the Falstaff Brewery, which served many companies and consumers. Since then, the compound has housed office spaces and auctions up until 2023, when it officially became The Falstaff.
“We’re actually sitting where they used to have the water tower right now. The water tower went all the way up, and it sent water to the plant,” says Daniela Lastra, founder of The Falstaff.
“Towards the front, it kind of looks more like a home if you walk in it. That’s because it was the brewer’s
Words and photos by:

house. That’s where they lived with people who helped operate the farm.”
The compound’s history is evident in its antique architecture.
The pearly white pueblo walls surrounding the complex boasts a smooth and stuccoed finish. Walking into the compound, you will notice the white brick walls and southwestern style of the buildings that make up The Falstaff.
Murals and quotes decorate some of the walls surrounding its fountained courtyard, while a towering mulberry tree adds much-needed shade to the space. String lights hang and decorate the overhead, shining with a soft glow when the sun goes down.
While the compound itself has changed, its purpose has stayed the same or “come full circle” as Lastra put it.
Since its days as a brewery, The Falstaff has provided the same thing to El Pasoans for decades: a space for the community to come together.
“Before I started working on this project, I was in the nonprofit sector, so I’ve always been doing community work,” Lastra says.
“The vision was always for it to be a beautiful community space where you would see a lot of creatives come in for a lot of exhibitions,
art shows, music shows. Then we’ve ventured into a bunch of different mediums.”
Today, The Falstaff is home to around a dozen artists and studios, three art galleries, and a regularly open coffeeshop among other things. Per Lastra’s vision, the compound has become a space where people are free to express themselves in every form.
That includes movie nights, art exhibitions, coffee parties, concerts, and other events.
One staple of The Falstaff is a monthly event called “Last Thursday” in which all the galleries and businesses at the complex open their doors on the last Thursday of each month, and like all events at The Falstaff, it is free to the public.
While you walk around and take in the styles of different artists, you can sip on a vanilla matcha latte from The Falstaff’s cafe, Coffee Party while browsing the goods and services from the local chefs, vendors and artists who come out for the occasion.
“The Falstaff allows us to bring art to the community to people who might otherwise not have not have access to certain types of artistic experiences,” said David Delgado, the founder of Nova Art Space based at The Falstaff.
“The community has been occupying this space, and has us currently booked into April of 2026 with all the exhibitions and events, which shows that it’s a much-needed space.”
Together, Delgado and Lastra have coordinated the many events at The Falstaff.
One recent event was Beats and Lattes Vol. 2.
Elliott Rivera, a content creator and marketer for Novamex collaborated with The Falstaff for the event.
“My good friend David is one of the main heads of The Falstaff along with Daniela, and
they’ve been so good at hosting community gatherings since they opened,” Rivera says. “I have been acquainted with everybody throughout these past two years, and I was able to create a circle of artists. Spaces like The Falstaff allow people to express themselves and break through in terms of artistry and many different fields.”
As Lastra and Delgado continue to work on events for The Falstaff, the two also have a few hopes for the complex’s future.
“The final frontier and most challenging part has been getting the gastronomy component, the food, which is kind of the last phase of it,” Lastra says. “Nonprofits are going to continue being a big focus because there are a lot of nonprofits, especially right now, that are being cut from certain types of funding. I have a space that I can donate to them to have the opportunity to fundraise. It’s just a matter of working together.”

BOLD and BEAUTIFUL
Statement Colors, Luxe Textures and ART THAT SPEAKS
Fearless& Fabulous
This El Paso Home Nails
Every Bold Design Trend

Stylist and Story Coordinator: LADONNA APODACA

This El Paso home doesn’t just capture current trends, it elevates them through fearless selfexpression, luxurious finishes, and masterful cohesion. From its art-forward living rooms to a kitchen that proves utility and beauty can coexist, every inch of this home invites you to be bolder, braver, and more intentional with design.
With each room telling a cohesive yet distinct story, this home is a bold blueprint for living beautifully and unapologetically.
For those seeking inspiration beyond the beige and the basic, this home delivers a bold reminder: the most stylish spaces are the ones that reflect who you are – and dare to say it out loud. Here’s how it captures and elevates today’s most exciting design trends:
Color Blocking with Confidence
Color is the connective tissue throughout the home, and it’s used here with daring precision. In the main living room, emerald green paneling wraps around a sunken lounge, while a matte black wall provides dramatic contrast for lavender upholstery and abstract artwork. Adjacent rooms deepen the palette with navy walls, blush textiles, and jeweltoned drapes. And in the kitchen? The color

story continues with sage cabinetry, a glossy crimson range hood, and a backdrop of crisp white subway tile.
This sophisticated layering of saturated hues isn’t just trendy, but transformative. It gives each room its own identity while reinforcing a cohesive visual language. The result is vibrant but intentional, energizing without ever feeling chaotic.
The Velvet Touch
Texture takes center stage, especially in the form of velvet, and is an unignorable throughline in the home’s design. From the tufted lilac sofa and plush ottomans to the ribbed mint lounge chairs, velvet adds softness, depth, and elegance to the living spaces. It pairs beautifully with hard finishes like polished brass, dark wood tile, and marble countertops.
Velvet also brings a tactile richness that invites relaxation, creating rooms that are as comfortable as they are beautiful. It’s the ultimate fabric for a home that values both glamour and warmth.
Art as Identity
Few homes embrace artwork as boldly or personally as this one. The gallery wall behind the tufted sofa features three evocative, largescale pieces, each one brimming with energy and emotional texture. Hints of fire orange, creamy white, smoky charcoal, and mustard yellow tie the artworks together, their abstract figures lending intrigue and narrative to the space.
Elsewhere, sculptural pieces (like the gold sunburst above the fireplace and a white figurative sculpture on the mantel) contribute to the home’s ongoing conversation between art and environment.

Whether hanging, standing, or styled, art is everywhere in this home, treated not as accessory but as essence.
Mixed-Era Magic
What makes the design feel fresh instead of formulaic is its confident blend of styles. Rococo-inspired seating, mid-century silhouettes, antique glassware, and modern lighting fixtures all mingle effortlessly. Even in the kitchen, traditional millwork is modernized with sleek pendants, brass hardware, and statement appliances.
This stylistic tension – where old meets new, soft meets sleek – gives the home its personality. It’s curated, not catalogued, and that layered storytelling is one of the most enduring design trends of the moment.
Defined Spaces, Seamlessly Connected
This home is a masterclass in zoning without
closing off. A step-down lounge visually carves out a conversation nook, while wide walkways, consistent flooring, and matching color cues create flow from room to room. The kitchen opens onto a stunning picture window framed by trees, giving a sense of grounded calm even amid bold design choices.
Each space feels distinct, purposeful in its function, but the house never loses its sense of unity. It’s open-concept living with definition and soul.
Lighting That Leads
Lighting here is never just practical:it’s part of the design story.
From the spiked starburst chandelier in the lounge to the smoky glass pendants floating above the kitchen island, every fixture is a sculptural element. Natural light is just as important: the oversized sliding doors and kitchen window flood the spaces with

golden El Paso sunshine, activating every color and texture.
The lighting’s layered strategy (ambient, task, decorative) brings atmosphere and drama, proving that good light doesn’t just illuminate a room: it transforms it.
Layered Textures, Layered Life
There’s no shortage of tactile interest in this home: glossy brass, matte paint, soft velvet, cool marble, and textured ceramics all converge in stylish harmony. The kitchen alone showcases this beautifully, where polished countertops meet paneled cabinetry, while industrial bar stools and chrome accents add edge. Even the drink cart tucked beside the sofa becomes a microcosm of metallics, glass, and curated treasures.
Every corner of the home has something to touch, feel, or admire. It’s a space built not just to impress – but to live in, fully and joyfully.

What legacy are you aiming to build through your leadership and vision for the company?
We’d like our company to be known for the quality of our work and the strong relationships we build with our customers.
What’s the most challenging project you’ve ever taken on, and how did you overcome the hurdles?
Ruben: I’m currently working on a challenging project—a largescale remodel of a historic building that we’re converting into boutique apartments. What makes it particularly complex is balancing the requirements for historical preservation set by the state of Texas with our client’s specific needs and vision. The goal is to bring everything together in a way that functions seamlessly and is also aesthetically beautiful.
Adam: I’m always working on challenging projects—that’s what keeps me motivated. About eight years ago, we added a second story to a historic home, which was a major undertaking at the time. Since then, projects like that have become a regular part of our work. I’m currently working on a similar project, but on a much larger scale. This one includes a first-floor addition and a new second story addition as well as a full home remodel. Clear and consistent communication with our clients, helps us to navigate challenges while staying true to their vision for their dream home. Each job presents its own unique challenges, but it’s those challenges that push us to grow. We’re passionate about learning and improving. We’re excited for the opportunities that future projects will bring.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the home industry, and how did your journey as a home professional begin?
What inspired me to pursue a career in home building was my passion for manufacturing, process development, and architecture.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry?
There are several things that set Palo Verde Homes apart from others. We have been in business for close to 20 years, in that time we have been VOTED Builder of the Year over 10 times and have delivered over 3,000 homes to some of El Paso’s best families. We are one of America’s Top 200 Builders and are recognized annually by the EPA for building 100% of our homes Energy Star Certified. Our TEAM includes five engineering degrees, one architecture degree, and 20 people that LOVE taking care of our customers. We currently have homes starting at $250,000 and are always offering Buyer and Agent incentives.
Can you share a memorable project or moment that made you feel especially proud of your work?
Being VOTED Builder of The Year over ten times across several publications makes us proud. Also, being recognized as one of the nation’s largest home builders and annually by the EPA for our Energy Certified homes is incredible. We LOVE what we do and it shows.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
Our culture is based on continuous improvement. Our TEAM believes that you always need to be developing and improving yourself, your product, and your processes. It is especially critical when competitors plagiarize your ideas, works, features, and practices. We like to visit supplier’s manufacturing facilities, hold regular training sessions with our distributors and contractors, and visit model homes in other states for ideas. Social media is also such an incredible tool that allows you to find design ideas and inspiration. We also hold regular production meetings with the entire TEAM and welcome everyone’s feedback and ideas.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the home industry, and how did your journey as a home professional begin?
What inspired me to pursue a career in real estate was the idea of helping people find a HOME - not just a property, but a place where their lives unfold. I wanted a career where I could combine that passion with service, strategy and relationship building. I love that every client , every transaction and every home has its own story. Real Estate allows me to guide people through some of their biggest decisions-and that’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of that journey.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry? What unique qualities or services do you offer?
What sets my business apart is the personal connection I build with every client. Real Estate isn’t just about transactions- it’s about trust, timing, and understanding people’s real lives. I take the time to truly listen to my clients’ needs and guide them with honesty, clarity and patience. That human element is what makes all the difference. My clients know that I’m in their corner - not just an agent, but a trusted advisor and local expert. The level of dedication is what keeps them coming back and referring others.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career or business, and how did you navigate through it?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my real estate career was navigating a market downturn and current changes that have come up while still trying to grow my business. This experience has taught me the importance of consistency , adaptability and being client focused no matter the market.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
In a field like real estate where market trends, technology and client expectations are always shifting, staying current and innovative is non negotiable. I make it a point to consistently study market data, attend industry webinars and stay connected with local professionals and education. I also keep a close eye on emerging tech tools- whether its CRM platforms, AI driven marketing strategies or virtual tour software- to make sure I’m providing a seamless, modern experience for my clients. More importantly, I listen. Every client interaction teaches me something new about what people need, value and expect. Innovation for me isn’t just about tools- it’s about being adaptable, forward thinking and always improving the way I serve my clients.

The home industry presents many opportunities to assist people in various ways. Title insurance and escrow services are among them. I’m very passionate about the safety that this product and service provides for our consumers. My journey in the title industry began when I worked for GECU in various leadership roles for more than 25 years. Assisting their membership to achieve financial freedom led me to pursue a career with Prosperus Title & Escrow as Office Manager. Within three years I became the President of the agency.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry?
We are unique in comparison to other local title companies in that we have a main office and we can close our customers’ transactions across the city at various convenient locations. We have a knowledgeable and experienced team of title specialists who provide exceptional services for all residential and commercial needs.

Can you share a memorable project or moment that made you feel especially proud of your work?
Helping people is important to me. I especially feel proud of my work when I can assist a client with a difficult situation within their transaction.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career or business, and how did you navigate through it?
One of the biggest challenges I have faced in my career is my battle with breast cancer. Managing the many duties of running a title company, while attending treatment, is a new normal as I go through this journey. Through strength, faith, determination, family support and courage I have been successful in navigating through this chapter in my life as a professional.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
I have embraced technological advancements to improve efficiency and enhance customer service. Proactive communication by leveraging technology to provide responses to client inquiries and offer proactive updates on their closing status is key to meeting our clients’ needs.

Our journey in the home and financial industries stems from a shared belief: ownership creates opportunity. Whether it’s purchasing a first home or building a portfolio of investments, access to the right guidance can shift the course of someone’s life. While we each run our own companies—Tania as the leading force of EMI Funding and Jason as the founder of iBelieve Investments—our missions often align. Together, we help people move beyond transactions and toward long-term financial growth.
At EMI Funding, the focus is on simplifying the mortgage process and empowering clients through education and transparency. From first-time homebuyers to experienced investors, we tailor each loan strategy to support short- and long-term goals. Jason, through iBelieve Investments, works with individuals who want to grow wealth strategically—offering coaching in day trading, passive income development, and investment mindset training. Our combined efforts bridge the gap between access to capital and understanding how to use it effectively.
Some of our proudest moments come from helping families who were once told “no” finally get their keys and start a new chapter of ownership. It’s deeply rewarding to see those dreams come true— especially for families who never thought it was possible. Another unforgettable story began at a local Starbucks, where Jason met

a young man curious about money. That one conversation led to months of mentorship and hands-on guidance. Today, that same young man is building wealth through day trading and taking control of his financial future.
We’ve both faced our share of challenges—adapting to volatile markets, evolving industry demands, and balancing family life along the way. But those moments have sharpened our focus and fueled our commitment to creating lasting change for others.
For those looking to take the next step—whether it’s applying for a home loan, refinancing, or getting serious about building wealth— there are two easy ways to get started. Join Jason’s private iBelieve Investments Discord for community, coaching, and financial strategy. We believe ownership is just the beginning. The real power is in knowing how to grow it.

Mr. Electric of El Paso 6350 Escondido Dr. Unit D33 (915) 247-5506 elpaso@mrelectric.com mrelectric.com/el-paso
What inspired you to pursue a career in the home industry, and how did your journey as a home professional begin?
My father’s 25 years as a General Contractor taught me to deeply respect skilled tradespeople. I grew up admiring their work ethic, dedication and craft. That’s why I set out to build a company that honors their work and delivers exceptional service to our customers — an organization rooted in appreciation, quality craftsmanship, and care for both our team and the customers we serve.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry?
What truly sets Mr. Electric apart is our people. Our Professionals are not just licensed electricians — they are trusted advisors who educate, solve problems, and put your safety first. With a relentless commitment to safety, efficiency, and transparency, we deliver more than electrical work — we deliver peace of mind. Mr. Electric is where quality craftsmanship meets exceptional care.
Can you share a memorable project or moment that made you feel especially proud of your work?
In 100+ degree heat, our team worked tirelessly to help a family without AC – turning every stone to find the issue. Though the issue was HVAC-related, we provided answers others could not. The customer was incredibly grateful, and I’m proud to lead a team that always shows up with heart, determination, and a commitment to doing right by those we serve.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career or business, and how did you navigate through it?
Finding the right fit has been my greatest challenge — and greatest gift. From serving in the United States Marines to advising global leaders at Boston Consulting Group, service and continuous learning have shaped my career. Today, I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve my team and the El Paso community every day, doing work that truly matters.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
At Mr. Electric, we invest heavily in training, continuous education, and industry research to ensure our team remains at the forefront of the electrical trade. Lettie Ramos, Senior Vice President of Mortgage, GECU
7227 Viscount Blvd. (915) 778-9221
gecu.com
What inspired you to pursue a career in the home industry, and how did your journey as a home professional begin?
My parents purchased their one and only home at an older age and growing up I had always heard that it was very difficult to purchase a home. I knew that someday I wanted to be a homeowner, so I made it my goal to learn more about the process and make a difference for those dreaming of owning a home. I started my journey in the mortgage industry at GECU more than 32 years ago. I’ve had many roles including loan servicing, processing, mortgage loan officer, manager and now I’m the Senior Vice President of GECU Mortgage.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry?
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to education, service, and providing real value to our community. We take the time to educate potential homebuyers about the entire homebuying process, helping them feel confident and informed every step of the way.
Can you share a memorable project or moment that made you feel especially proud of your work?
One of the first mortgage loans I closed as a loan officer was for a 70-year-old grandmother and her 18-year-old grandson. The grandmother was a home renter for 30 years and she didn’t think she would ever be able to own her own home. The rewarding feeling of helping them achieve their dream of homeownership is still with me today.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career or business, and how did you navigate through it?
We are in a highly competitive housing environment that is heavily regulated. That’s why having a knowledgeable team that knows the right products that fit the needs of the community is important now more than ever. For more than 90 years, “the people helping people” philosophy has been our guiding principle in every challenge and for every member’s unique situation.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
We’re always looking for ways to enhance our members’ experience whether it be through technology, collaborating with industry organizations, attending conferences or networking with industry peers. When you connect with others, you learn from their perspective and area expertise which supports widening your knowledge and helping more people.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the home industry, and how did your journey as a home professional begin?
I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be part of the design world. At first, I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, but everything changed when I discovered architecture and interior design. That’s when I knew I had found my true passion.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry? What unique qualities or services do you offer?
I believe El Paso is full of extraordinary talent in this field. Each of us brings something unique to the table, and it’s our individual style that truly sets us apart.
Personally, what I enjoy the most is the relationship that naturally develops with each client — a kind of creative partnership where we share a common goal. It’s a journey filled with challenges, growth, and countless meaningful moments. And in the end, there’s nothing more rewarding than sitting down together and enjoying the space we had created.
Can you share a memorable project or moment that made you feel especially proud of your work?
To be honest, my projects feel like my children, each one is a unique adventure. I can’t choose just one as the most memorable, because I’ve truly enjoyed every single one of them, and I continue to do so. Each project leaves a mark on me in its own way.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career or business, and how did you navigate through it?
I think one of the biggest challenges has been carving out my own path in the world of construction , an industry still largely led by men. Earning respect without being confrontational, while honoring the diverse perspectives of the people I’ve met along the way, hasn’t always been easy.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
I love staying up to date by attending architecture and design conferences. Not only are they a great source of learning, but they also allow me to connect with incredibly talented people who share the same passion and love for design.

Juan Jose Vasquez Pacifica Homes, Inc.
O: (915) 857-1855
C: (915) 740-9399
12660 Tierra Clara Rd. pacificahomesep.com
What inspired you to pursue a career in the home industry, and how did your journey as a home professional begin?
As a young man I was involved in sales and worked with new home builders. It is the American dream to be able to achieve the level of experience and confidence to pursue my own business and make it successful.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry? What unique qualities or services do you offer?
I would say builders’ personnel supervision sets us apart from other builders in the industry, giving us an advantage when buyers visit the job site to review their home’s progress. They see that the builder has knowledge of their home while also being able to address any concerns the buyer may have on site.
Can you share a memorable project or moment that made you feel especially proud of your work?
400 Del Rio View Dr., our 2024 Parade of Homes showcase was the most memorable of homes we showcased. This home went
beyond what Pacifica Homes has offered in the past years and we are extremely proud of this build. Another memorable experience was when as a novice builder in the early 2000’s I achieved over 100 homes in sales and construction in one (1) year.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career or business, and how did you navigate through it?
2008 was one of the most challenging years, not only for Pacifica Homes but builders throughout the industry with its challenges in financing and foreclosures hitting the market.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
Creativity is a challenge trying to keep up with market trends. The El Paso market is unique to other markets throughout the state of Texas and nation. Our income levels are different in El Paso so we must be creative in ways that can be affordable for the buyer yet offer affordable new trends.

Rocky Mountain Mortgage Company
2244 Trawood Dr #100, NMLS #256179
What inspired you to pursue a career in the home industry, and how did your journey as a home professional begin?
Rocky Mountain Mortgage Company opened its doors in 1985 and will celebrate 40 years of faithful service to El Paso and the surrounding communities of west Texas and Southern New Mexico in November of 2025.
What do you believe sets your business apart from others in the industry? What unique qualities or services do you offer?
Being locally owned and operated with all of our operational staff in one building allows Rocky Mountain Mortgage Company to take a loan from application to closing faster than the competition. Many of the loans we originate enjoy life-of-loan servicing right here in El Paso.
Can you share a memorable project or moment that made you feel especially proud of your work?
One of the best parts about working in the mortgage industry is all the great moments we get to share with our clients. From pre-approval
to final approval to keys-in-hand, the relationships that we forge with our clients throughout the mortgage process allow us many opportunities to share with them in their joy of becoming homeowners.
What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career or business, and how did you navigate through it?
The 2008 financial crisis left the mortgage and real estate industries reeling and on life support. Rocky Mountain Mortgage Company’s commitment to our core values of integrity, accountability and professionalism ensured the Company’s survival and subsequent growth. The years that followed were challenging, but today, RMMC and the mortgage industry have emerged stronger and better because of those challenges.
In a field where trends and client needs are constantly evolving, how do you stay current and innovative in your work?
The financial services industry in general, and the mortgage industry in particular, are by their very nature risk averse which means change tends to happen slowly and trends are largely ignored. However, at RMMC we are constantly seeking to leverage talent and technology to ensure that the customer experience that we are delivering is something that resonates with our clients and referral partners.
Meet Broadway’s BorderlandStar
| By: ERIN COULEHAN
El Paso native Shelby Luna Acosta is lighting up Broadway in the new musical “Real Women Have Curves,” an original production based on Josefina López’s beloved story. In a role she helped develop, Acosta brings boldness, heart, and lived experience to the stage. From childhood performances in El Paso to shaping the future of Latino and Hispanic theater, her journey is one of creative passion and cultural pride.
The City Magazine
First off, congratulations! Can you tell us about your incredible new role?
Shelby Luna
Thank you! Yes, I’m in the musical Real Women Have Curves, which is loosely based on the movie written by Josefina López and originally starring America Ferrera. It’s actually Josefina’s real-life story about working in a sewing factory with her family and close friends, all immigrants in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. She’s been involved in this process, too.
We took parts of her story and turned it into a musical – Broadway-style – while still focusing on real, important topics like immigration, body image, and what it’s like to be the only legal citizen in your family. I joined the project about two years ago. They’d been developing the show for over six years, and after our pre-Broadway run in Cambridge, they found producers who believed in the story. Now, here we are!
TCM
What was it like stepping onto the Broadway stage in this show?
SL
It was surreal. I had been in a Broadway show before, but I was an off-stage cover, so I’d go on only if someone was sick. This time, I’m on stage every night in a role that didn’t even exist in the film. I helped develop it with the creative team, so it feels really personal. There’s a piece of me in it, and getting to show that every night is something I feel very lucky to do.
TCM
That’s amazing. What was the process of shaping your character like?
SL
When I first auditioned, the character didn’t even have a name, just a placeholder like “Prima.” During rehearsals, I’d add little twists to my lines, and we’d all talk about how we saw our characters: their style, their voice, their energy.
I decided to make my character, now named Flaca, a Chola. Especially in the ’80s, Chola culture was such a powerful form of rebellion, like owning your style, your presence, saying “screw you” to traditional beauty standards. I brought that energy to her. She’s flirtatious, bold, a little wild – and very me.
TCM
What a cool way to breathe life into a character. So how did your theater journey begin?
SL
It all started in El Paso. My first time singing in public was in kindergarten at Benito Martinez Elementary. I always loved to sing, but back then, there wasn’t much of a theater scene in El Paso. I did shows at the El Paso Playhouse, and eventually, my best friend’s mom –Stacey – who’s basically family, decided to build a community theater from scratch for us. That became a creative outlet for so many kids and adults.
I told my mom, “I think I want to do this forever. I’m not really good at anything else.” She said, “Okay, let’s figure it out.” I found a performing arts boarding school in Michigan, auditioned, and got in. After that, I went to college for musical theater, moved to New York, and kept auditioning, and here we are!
TCM
And now you’re literally living your dream. How does that feel?
SL Honestly? Kind of surreal. Of course, it’s a job too, and some nights you’re just going through the motions. But sometimes I’ll have this outof-body moment where I realize: “You’re on
photography courtesy of: SHELBY LUNA |
Star
a Broadway stage. You’re a principal in an original musical. This is happening.”
I feel so lucky, and proud. It took years of hearing “no” before I started hearing “yes.” Every rejection led to this moment, and I’m really grateful.
TCM
This show is also incredibly timely and culturally relevant.
SL
Definitely. None of us could’ve predicted how relevant it would be, especially with what’s happening in the world right now. It’s bittersweet, but powerful.
The lead in our show, Estela, is played by Florencia, an immigrant from Mexico. She’s actually the first Mexican immigrant to ever lead a Broadway show. Telling these stories, especially now, feels beautiful, but also emotional night after night.
TCM
What you’re all doing is so meaningful, especially in terms of representation.

SL
Thank you. I think our story sheds light on immigration in a way only art can. A lot of white audiences come to Broadway to “escape,” and we give them that, but we also hit them with the truth. We humanize people who are so often dehumanized. These are humans first, not their status. If even one person leaves the theater seeing things differently, I feel like we’ve done something important.

TCM
Do you have a dream role or dream project you’d love to do next?
SL
I’d love to be in Sunday in the Park with George, it’s one of my favorite musicals. But honestly, I really want to do a sitcom. Being on TV in a funny, lighthearted show would be amazing.
TCM
Broadway and TV, we’ll manifest both! What’s been the most unexpected thing you’ve learned so far?
SL
I’ve learned that Latinx stories are exactly what Broadway needs right now. Right now, there are two Latin shows running at the same time, something that hasn’t really happened before.
Both are doing well, which shows there’s room for more than one every few years. Audiences are ready. We just need to keep telling these stories, being ourselves, and showing the full spectrum of our communities on stage.
TCM
You’re such a strong example of why the arts matter, especially at a time when so many programs are being cut.

SL
Yes! And especially for nonwhite communities, access to the arts isn’t always available. Seeing a show like ours proves we need these programs everywhere. Representation matters, and access matters.
TCM
What do you love most about living in New York?

I love how big it is, and how many people are

Coldplay brings “Paradise” to El Paso

| Story and photography by: ANNABELLA MIRELES |
For a few hours on June 13 and 14, Mesa Street fell quiet. Businesses weren’t as packed as they would usually be on Fridays and Saturdays, and the usual nightlife buzz wasn’t downtown, but jampacked at the Sun Bowl stadium.
The excitement to see the British rock band Coldplay overwhelmed not only the city, but also people from out of the state and country (considering El Paso was their only stop in Texas for the World of the Spheres tour thanks to the influence of Jim Ward, guitarist of At the Drive-In). The band also brought Palestinian-Chilean singer Elyanna and Willow Smith, daughter Will Smith, as the openers, both of whom are activists.
Over 90,000 people attended the concert and experienced the band paint the sky with a rainbow of confetti, elaborate and psychedelic-like on-screen visuals, and giant balloons that were passed around the crowd. Fans also got to participate in the “light show” by wearing an LED wristband (xylobands) which helped illuminate the stadium into an array of colors that synchronized with the songs and even lead singer Chris Martin’s movements.
The event required plenty of coordination and involvement from both UTEP’s Special Events staff as well as fans’ participation.
Executive Director of Special Events at UTEP, Jorge Vazquez, said coordinating an event like this took much preparation.
“It was the biggest professional challenge for my team and me personally,” he says. “It was also the biggest privilege to be entrusted with the number one show in the world by the number one band in the world not for one, but two concerts. It took over three months of meetings to strategize and organize everything.”
Despite water stations, which were free to fans as well as heat warnings, the triple digit

heat was simply too much, and several fans reported experiencing heat exhaustion while waiting in the lines.
“It created challenges and made us deploy extra resources needed to keep fans safe,” Vazquez says in regard to the heat. “But as the sun decreased in intensity and more shade covered the stadium, it became the perfect setting for an amazing outdoor concert experience.”
With both shows having sold out, there was no question fans were going to try alternative methods for viewing this can’t-miss concert.
Considering the Sun Bowl stadium is built into the Franklin Mountains, the rocky hills that surround the stadium have been historically used by fans to avoid having to pay ticket fees or miss a momentous event. Dedicated fan Valerie Gameros was one of several who experienced the concert from the mountain.

“I was thinking of climbing the mountain to see them since tickets sold out, but I was scared because I wasn’t sure if security was going to be tougher since Coldplay is such a well-known group,” Gameros says. “The night before, my boyfriend and I drove up to UTEP to figure out how everyone gets up there. Climbing the mountain wasn’t as bad as I thought. It wasn’t too steep to where it was difficult, but I did have to catch my breath a little bit. Once we arrived at the top, there were so many people sitting down. We were amazed at how many people were there! We even saw kids, so that’s how you know the climb wasn’t too bad. It was just a matter of being careful, but everyone around was super friendly!”
Although the band knocked tens of thousands of fans’ socks off, that wasn’t their only goal.
Coldplay’s sustainability initiative was hard to miss, especially when the first few minutes of their performance informed fans on where
the money from their tour was going toward such as reforestation, ocean cleanup and environmental law. UTEP Special Events also created a list of recommendations for fans who wanted to participate in this initiative and help decrease their carbon footprint.
“It made me very happy to see that people truly wanted to be informed,” Vazquez says. “People read our recommendations and rode the buses, the streetcar and carpooled. They also brought their reusable water bottles, and I was impressed by the size of bottles some people brought. Only very few rode the power bicycles, but it was a hot day so that’s to be expected.”
According to Coldplay’s tour’s website, the tour has an average 86% wristband return rate and has overall reduced wristband production by 80% through collecting these wristbands. The leaderboard displayed at Saturday’s

concert showed El Paso had an 87% return rate for Friday’s show, in comparison to Las Vegas’s 89% and Seoul’s 99%.
In addition to encouraging fans to return their bracelets to reduce the tour’s amount of waste, the concert also featured a kinetic floor and power bicycles which allowed fans to generate power for the show. Despite the heat that discouraged many from attempting to ride the bicycles, Coldplay fan Oskar Callejas saw it as a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“Knowing that riding the bike had an impact on the rest of the tour was a really sweet thing to think about,” he says. “I wanted to participate because it felt like being able to connect with all sorts of people with the act of ‘paying it forward.’ As someone who works in the music industry, I understand that putting together a sustainable tour can be logistically challenging, but Coldplay is a prime example that it’s possible especially with the right team behind it all.”
According to the tour’s website, the band aims to reduce consumption, reinvent new green technologies, and restore our planet by drawing down CO2 emissions on a global scale, however, the band also made an effort at impacting communities and helping local organizations to spread their initiatives as well.
The nonprofit Global Citizen partnered up with the band and reached out to local organizations including the UTEP organization SEEDS, which stands for “strategies for ecology, education, diversity and sustainability.” The organization was able to have a booth at the concert to help spread awareness of their cause and was also given tickets to view the concert as a way of thanking local sustainability organizations.
“We were so excited to have been invited,” Gabriela Montes, Historian for SEEDS says. “We didn’t know why our organization was invited, but when we looked into it, it was cool to be involved and help spread their word on sustainability and how we can help within our own community. We even had an interactive activity where people could guess which animals
were pollinators. It’s nice to see that a band so big has the same mission as us and cares about sustainability.”
According to Vazquez, more events of this magnitude are in UTEP’s future.
“I cannot wait to tell you about those when the time comes,” he says. “All I can say is ‘El Paso, we did it! Thank you for showing up with so much heart and so much love. What we created those two nights was pure magic. I am already working on bringing more big events to our beautiful stadium and keeping us on the map of the top shows in the world.”
Coldplay’s presence in El Paso definitely left more than a few “sparks” in our Sun City, boosting spirits, our economy, and spreading environmental awareness. El Paso won’t forget the day Coldplay came, and now that Mayor Johnson has given Chris Martin a key to the city, hopefully they won’t forget us either.

Sisterhood The Power of
| By: ANA DIAZ |

ne quality that makes our city unique is the concept of sisterhood, which serves as a true definition of our community. While El Paso serves as a sister to Ciudad Juárez and Las Cruces, our community also nurtures sisterhood beyond geographical borders. Sisterhood isn’t always loud; sometimes,
it manifests in the background. In the encouragement from a mentor; the shared vision of a team; or a girl discovering her voice through writing. This is exactly where this story begins: with a young woman named Frances Gunn and the ripples she’s creating through sisterhood, literacy, and leadership in El Paso.
Gunn, a high school student, recently earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award by launching WriteOn! – a creative writing club at Wiggs Middle School aimed at amplifying student voices in a city where access to literary spaces is limited. What started as a school club quickly grew into something much more

powerful: a platform for girls to be heard, and a space where sisterhood naturally flourished.
“I don’t have sisters, but I associate sisterhood with having that group of girls who will always be there for you: to cheer you up, go to the movies, or just sit with you when you’re having a hard day,” Gunn says. “At WriteOn!, I saw that most of the students who joined were girls who didn’t feel they had a place to express themselves. They found that in writing and in each other.”

Gunn is a published author and is currently interning in Washington, D.C. under Congresswoman Veronica Escobar.
Her perspective, even at a young age, is deeply rooted in the community. She credits her success to the support of the women around her: her mother, Jonna Perrillo, (a Ph.D. holder and trailblazer in her own right), and mentors like Ms. Hunt, Ms. Silva, and local author Alessandra Narvaez-Varela.
“Seeing women like my mom and Ms. Hunt do so much for the community is inspiring,” she says. “Ms. Silva taught me about speaking out against book bans and the importance of literature. Alessandra is proof that someone from this area can become a published author. That showed me it’s not just a New Yorker fantasy – it’s real, and it’s possible.”
The impact of WriteOn! Became clear when Gunn conducted an end-of-year survey.
“Almost all the students said they felt a stronger sense of community because of the club,” she explains. “Sisterhood is community, and community is sisterhood. You can’t separate them.”
Looking ahead, Gunn plans to expand WriteOn! by reaching out to librarians throughout El Paso to adopt or replicate the program.
Her goal?
To ensure that every student, no matter where they are, has a space to write, connect, and feel seen.
In a time when so many girls are told their voices don’t matter, Gunn is helping to rewrite the script. She’s showing us that leadership doesn’t have to be loud, perfect, or solitary. It just has to be rooted in something real.
“When women support women, things happen,” she says. “Projects happen. Change happens.”

Where Sound Meets Soul
| By: BRITAIN POWERS |
In a culture that often rewards constant business and productivity, Zen Lotus Healing offers a sanctuary where the community is invited to pause, take a breath, and make space for holistic self-care.
For founder Noelle Meyer, the path to sound healing began in her childhood, where she found stillness in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. Decades later, the song of quartz bowls and the chime of instruments echo the serenity of her childhood as she guides others inward to find their peace.
Meyer grew up as a missionary child, where life was vibrant with nature, peace, and simplicity.
But when she returned to the fast-paced, noisy culture of America in 1989, she found herself longing for the tranquil rhythm of the jungle she once called home. Throughout her life, Meyer explored various wellness practices and healing methods in search of inner peace. It wasn’t until 2022, when she experienced her first sound bath, that she felt a profound awakening, a calling to guide others through this transformative practice.
“I was so deeply moved by the session that I knew I had to share this incredible healing modality with those around me,” Meyer recalls. “I felt, deep in my soul, that this was the beginning of something life- changing.”
Life-changing it proved to be because just two years later, in October 2024, Meyer opened the doors to Zen Lotus Healing, her very own sound healing studio.
When you step into Zen Lotus Healing Studio, the bustle of Mesa and Thunderbird fades, enveloping you in a sanctuary designed for tranquility and repose. The studio’s soothing décor blends welcoming neutral tones with vibrant greenery, while soft meditation music fills the air and the gentle scents of natural soaps and essential oils greet you.
Meyer offers both sound baths and raindrop technique (an essential oil treatment).
“We are committed to creating healing environments both internally and externally that allows the body to heal itself and support you on your journey to wellness,” Meyer says.
A sound bath is an experience many have yet to discover, an all-encompassing journey into healing frequencies, just as the name suggests.
“Benefits of sound healing can vary at each session, as we are all in different spaces physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Benefits may include reduced anxiety and stress, reduced pain and inflammation, increased energy, improved sleep, a soothed nervous system, increased focus and clarity, emotional balance, and a strengthened immune system,” Meyer points out.
She adds that sound healing is a unique combination of science and spirit.
“It’s powerful precisely because it is based on scientific principles of vibration, frequency, and entrainment. Intuitive and spiritual aspects are overlaid onto these basic principles.”
At Zen Lotus, guests are welcomed into a softly lit, tranquil room and invited to lie on a cushioned yoga mat, complete with pillows and bolsters, or on raised beds for added comfort. Guests are then draped with light blankets and provided with eye masks to encourage deep relaxation.
Meyer uses eight crystal sound bowls of varying sizes, crafted from quartz and tuned to specific frequencies that align with the body’s energy centers, or chakras. As the bowls gently begin to sing, she leads you through calming breathwork. Koshi chimes, Tibetan singing bowls, rain sticks, and a wave drum further enhance the experience. Meyer shares that the studio will soon incorporate a gong and a quartz crystal harp to deepen the healing effects.
As the bowls hum and frequencies float through the air, it’s normal to find yourself unintentionally slipping into a meditative state, or perhaps even dozing off. Yet, it is in that deep relaxation where the most profound healing occurs within your body, and all you have to do is lie back and receive.
“It’s completely immersive, as the sound waves envelop you from every angle, very gently yet powerfully nudging you to let go and relax; your breathing slows, your mind begins to effortlessly wander into faraway places or memories,” Meyer details. “You may notice different sensations in the body as the healing frequencies move deep to a cellular level. Upon the conclusion of the session, you are aware of your body and surroundings again and slowly come back to the present, feeling calm, at peace, and utterly blissful!”
Meyer says that since beginning her journey into sound healing, she has noticed an improvement in her own health. She is ecstatic to be able to share this unique pathway to wholeness and wellness with others.
“My overall health has significantly improved, and I am continually in a centered and grounded space, enabling me to easily handle the stresses life throws my way. This work has taught me to slow way down, not to rush or push, to just be in the flow… and to be completely present.”
Zen Lotus Healing offers just that – an invitation to slow down and reconnect with body, mind, and spirit.
Turning Pages, Changing Lives

t all started with a tragedy. On Sept. 21, 2002 16-year-old Gracie Elizabeth Madriles was killed in a car accident. Her mother Paula Madriles, who was a teacher in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio neighborhood, was devastated.
In her grief, Madriles was supported by the community through donations that helped her in the aftermath.
Despite the hardships she faced, Madriles still kept her community’s needs in mind. Through the donations she received, she chose to help others. One thing she saw that the people around her lacked was a supply of books.
With her donations, Madriles decided to scout yard sales and discount stores to find books for families and teachers who did not have a supply of their own.
Soon enough, Madriles collected books to give to schools other than her own and people from other parts of El Paso. These books grew in numbers, taking over her kitchen and garage.
Before she knew it, Madriles learned she could not keep doing it alone.
In 2003, she successfully founded Books are GEMS (GEMS being the initials of Gracie Elizabeth Madriles).
Books are Gems is a 501(c)(3) bookstore that continues to accomplish its mission to inspire children to read and empower families through literacy.
“Her vision was just to provide many books and to promote literacy in the community. Not just with kids, but with parents too,” said Susan Patterson, manager at Books Are GEMS.
“There’s a lot of parents who can’t read. There’s a language barrier, so we try to have some Spanish and bilingual books as well.
Today, the bookstore’s mission is still being promoted as Patterson continues to push literature and literacy to the community. To her, being the manager for Books Are GEMS is the perfect job.
“I’ve been here for two and a half years. I came and applied and I was hired. I love it,” Patterson says.
After closing its first location on Doniphan Dr., the bookstore moved to its current location at 7744 N. Loop Dr. When you walk in, you are welcomed by shelves of free books to take home and donation bins if you would like to give some books away. Monetary donations are also welcome on the bookstore’s website and are tax-deductible.
Patterson loves the programs the bookstore offers for kids and parents.
One such program is the Nine Free Books Program, in which every child from newborn to high school age is eligible to pick out eight gently used books and one brand-new book for free.

Books Are GEMS also has its Teacher Program, where teachers (public, homeschool, parochial, etc.) can pick out as many teaching materials as they want from the Teacher Resource Area for free.
Teachers may also take up to 25 gently used books.
“We have our summer reading programs, and then we also have our Saturday Storytime, which is all year,” Patterson said. “We have a lot more crafts that we’re going to do after each storytime since the kids are going to be out of school. People can also watch storytime on Facebook Live just in case they can’t make it.”
This year, Books Are GEMS is having a summer “safari” reading program for any kids interested in entering. Children who sign up are tasked to read from a list of 25 books, themed appropriately for the summer.
The more books read, the bigger the prizes will be for those kids.
Students who enter will automatically be given a backpack and school supplies, courtesy of donations made to the nonprofit.

The bookstore’s programs are open to everyone, even drawing in visitors from Van Horn and Dell City.
We do a lot of networking, we collaborate with some county recreational centers that are way out in the county so they can supply their little area with books and have a little free library in there Patterson says.

While Books Are GEMS primarily provides books for kids, there is also a section for adults who want books for themselves. Filled with hardcovers and paperbacks from vintage to new reads, this section houses a variety of books ready for adults and parents.
There are also other goods in store for grown-ups looking around. From CDs and vinyls, to DVDs and tapes, Books Are GEMS sells plenty of media to reflect on or explore in today’s digital world.
“There’s really no comparison, as far as being on a technology learning something and to actually have a book in your hand and for me, it stimulates your mind,” says Jazmine Medina, assistant manager for Books Are GEMS.
“The bookstore for adults is more costeffective than other places. It’s 50 cents for paperbacks and one dollar for hardcovers. Proceeds help to purchase the new books for kids.”
As Books Are GEMS continues to support those in the community, the possibility of expanding has never been out of the question.
“I would love it if we could open another location like in the Northeast or on the West Side,” Patterson says.
“We would have to get a whole new group of volunteers, and get out in public and network with other organizations.”
For now, Books Are GEMS will continue to do its best to provide resources to families and educators who need them. Whether it’s non-fiction or fantasy, this bookstore is one to check out for anyone who wants to turn a new page.

The Dupe Revolution SUGAR, Spice, Skincare Advice
Let’s face it, we’ve all stumbled across those look-alike, smell-alike, budgetfriendly versions of our favorite luxury finds. That’s right, we’re talking dupes, the TikTok-era term for “duplicates” that today’s generation of social media doom-scrollers just can’t get enough of.
(Side note: When did we stop calling them knockoffs? Was that just a my-generation thing? Either way, the mission remains the same: luxury vibes without the luxury price tag.
From Taboo to Trending: How Dupes Took Over

wallet beg for mercy. Because here’s the thing: dupes aren’t just about saving money. They’re about finding reliable, everyday products that actually perform. This is often based on the same active ingredients or formulas found in those top-shelf products.
Let’s not forget the heartbreak of online shopping lately...
You open your browser for a little “treat yo’ self” moment, and suddenly that perfume
you used to splurge on once a year now costs what your electricity bill does.
Luxury brands have been hiking up their prices like they’re trying to reach the summit of Mount Cha-Ching – and guess who’s getting left behind? The shoppers who used to indulge here and there but are now left craving the thrill, the quality, the vibe, but at a price that doesn’t hurt.
Why Dupes Aren’t Just a Plan B Dupes strut in, unbothered and unbilled, ready to serve similar results (and sometimes better ones) for a fraction of the cost.
Some dupes don’t just fill the gap – they slay it!
I like to call this moment in beauty history: The Dupe Revolution.

Fragrance and makeup are the biggest stars of the dupe craze, and for good reason. With transcendent scents and high-performing glam alternatives hitting shelves (and TikTok feeds) every week, it’s getting harder and harder to say no.
But, is the quality actually there?
Short answer? Yes.
The long answer? You just have to know what to look for.
The trick is paying attention to what’s inside the fancy-shmancy stuff:
• The ingredients
• The formulas
• The actual performance
Let’s be real: with the level of competition in the beauty world, brands are cranking out high-performing dupes faster than luxury labels can slap a new price tag on their next overpriced foundation.
From bold pigments to buttery blendability, generous shade and scent ranges, and perks like free shipping and drugstore availability, dupes are delivering.
Hard.
They’re no longer the backup plan – they’re becoming the main event.

Tasting Notes & Inside Jokes
The Magic of Wine Meetups
| By: VIC POULOS |

We often hear that “wine is just a beverage.” Perhaps the only beverage where so called “experts” tell you what you should like: white or red, which vintages and even what producers you simply must try.
I have long been an advocate for dinking the wine YOU like and not what others tell you that you should like.
In society today, a movement has arisen that promotes temperance or “mindful drinking” and even alcohol free wines. A 2023 Gallup poll shows that the number of wine drinkers under age 35 has decreased by 10 points over the last two decades, while the number of wine consumers over the age of 55 has increased 10 points in the same period.
One possible explanation could be social movements such as “Dry January” that have arisen to encourage abstinence. Also, the medical implications of drinking wine in moderation has alternated from bad to beneficial and to “who knows?”
Today, California wine producers are struggling to survive, and tariffs have arrived to threaten European wine imports. So, why drink wine? What can wine drinkers do in the face of all of this uncertainty to preserve this time honored tradition?

Owning a vineyard and winery in Italy has shown me what grapes have done to create le dulce vida associated with living in Italy. Wine’s history dates back thousands of years to 6000 BC in the Republic of Georgia. The ancient Greeks and Romans were especially fond of wine and its role in society, believing it was a gift from God.
What I can say without hesitation is this: Wine is more than a beverage. It shapes the fabrics of past cultures and will shape future societies. Wine unites and brings people together. When was the last war you heard about that started with two world leaders arguing over a glass of wine? Never! Legend holds that Napolean once proclaimed: “Champagne: In victory you deserve it; in defeat you need it.”
True or not, wine brings people together, consoles us and projects us to better places where it is made, be it Italy, France, New Zealand, Germany, or Chile. Wine also sparks our human interest in each other. Our common likes and dislikes. Wine is a unifier of our common likes and dislikes!
I have belonged to a Tuesday 4:30 PM wine group known as the “Bored of Directors” (Yes, we call ourselves Bored not Board) for over a decade. Seven of us meet for an hour each week to blind taste wines and forget the tensions of the early week. We share the
responsibility to provide the wine amongst us each week, with a singular goal of providing unique wines and testing each other’s ability to blindly identify the varietal and producer or vintage. We generally only try three glasses of wine each week. The most common statement by the provider of the wine each week is “WRONG” as a multitude of guesses emerge from the table as we taste each wine. The “unveiling” of the wines takes place at 5:15 PM and the “ohs” and “ahs” begin.
What I have learned most of all from these weekly gatherings is that the wine has brought several different and diverse generations together each week, not only to test our wine knowledge, but mostly to engage in human interests with each other. Our goal is to learn about wine together. But the conversation turns to our sharing of common interests. We are a diverse group of lawyers from both sides of the “docket, entrepreneurs, financiers, builders and an artist. Our ages range from 40s to late 70s.
The wine bonds us, and is our “excuse” to meet each week.
We avoid divisive politics, and over the decades our conversation topics have evolved from sports, relationships, and rowdy jokes into our common medical maladies, and doctor appointments. Each week we all eagerly look forward to the Tuesday afternoon
wine tasting, the camaraderie, and the escape from everyday work pressures. The Germans call spending time simply engaging in conversation over an alcoholic beverage “Stammtisch!” Italians call it “Apertivo.”
I encourage each of you that appreciate wine to form a similar wine tasting group. Trust me when I tell you it is worth the effort. Pick a convenient but consistent location in a setting where you have privacy. Share some cheese with the wine. Encourage wine learning but most of all, encourage laughter, peace, relaxation and the sharing of social interaction. Some weeks some of us have unavoidable conflicts. Those who aren’t able to attend receive photos of what wines they missed. Bringing the wine has turned into a low form of competition to trick the other “wine experts.”
The weekly wine tasting is a constant in my life that I appreciate more and more each year. I know that if I ever needed a favor outside of wine, I could depend on the members of the Wine Bored of Directors. If I ever want to share a problem, or share a funny anecdote, this group gets it first. Yes, it’s a form of therapy in the end. But a tradition that began in 6000 BC should be continued.
Give it a try!
