urks and Caicos Islands youngest female deputy governor, Her Excellency Anya Williams and former Premier Hon. Galmo Williams and his wife Mrs. Althea Williams were recently rewarded for excellence in public service and humanitarian activity, respectively.

On December 13th, 2018, the deputy governor was invested with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her service over many years to the Turks and Caicos Islands, at Buckingham Palace in London, by Prince Charles, who is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II.

On December 15th, the former premier and his wife were the recipients of the Turks and Caicos Islands Human Rights Commission’s first ever Humanitarian of the Year Awards.

The Deputy Governor told The SUN: “I am honored to have been awarded a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE)

by Her Majesty’s Government for service to my beloved Turks and Caicos Islands. I recently marked my 15th year of service to the Turks and Caicos Government where I would have served 9 years in the Ministry of Finance as Budget Director and PS Finance and the last 6 years as Deputy Governor.”

The top Civil Servant, who is married to Darren Williams, added: “During my tenure I would have assisted and led on a number of key reform programs, but as I stated when I received notification of this award on the Queen’s official birthday in June, more than any title or accolade, I would like for my legacy in the service to be measured by testimonies of the number of lives that I would have touched during my tenure by

but the real winner last night was our communities and those individuals who have allowed all of us to continue doing good for them.

The motto that we personally live by is “God gave us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with”. The simple fact is that God blessed us so that we can be a blessing to others. This award have just refueled us, the work begins ANEW!”

TCI EXCELLENCE REWARDED

Jessica Corvil won the 2018 Junior Humanitarian Award for her work in youth empowerment. Corvil, a student of Raymond Gardiner High School in North Caicos launched a girl’s empowerment organization in April 2018 to speak to the challenges facing young women and provide them with an outlet for inspiration and change.

Director of the TCI Human Rights Commission, Sabrina Green said: “The first Humanitarian of the Year event in the Turks and Caicos Islands shines a light on the fact that there are a wide variety of wonderful people who are doing important work across our islands. Sometimes I feel we don’t give the people who work among us the credit they deserve for the work that they do, these awards are a way that we can address that. Education is one of the most successful ways to pull people out of poverty, reduce discrimination and build a secure and successful society so it was wonderful

that both the winners of both the junior and senior award do a lot of work in that area. Hon. Galmo and his wife Althea Williams do a great deal of work across the islands to help youth achieve their dreams by providing not only scholarships but also recreational facilities, in this way they provide opportunities for the children of poor families and seek to break the cycle of poverty in which families can sometimes feel trapped.”

Green added: “Jessica Corvil at the young age of 16 is addressing issues that she herself has experienced in her life, helping to empower young women to know their own minds and make good decisions, she has not allowed her experiences to break her but has found her strength and then lent of that strength to others. Issues such as teenage pregnancy lead to young girls missing out on education, condemning them and their families to a life lived in poverty, Jessica, like the

Williams’, has found a way to break the poverty cycle. Both our winners of the first Humanitarian of the Year Awards in the Turks and Caicos Islands are contributing valuable work to build a better Turks and Caicos Islands for all our futures.”

Former Premier Galmo Williams noted; “We are grateful for winning this award, but also recognize that there are others in this category that have worked just as hard for our community. We are proud just to be nominated alongside them and to be here today. This award is not the end because we plan on working even harder. It is our commitment to continue passing it on. For us, it’s not just about our kids and our family but how we can help other families within the Turks and Caicos.”

Junior Humanitarian awardee, Corvil said, “I wanted to reach out to young girls because as a young woman myself I went through a lot in my

younger years and I wanted these girls to know they are not alone.”

The full slate of nominees for the 2018 Humanitarian of the Year Award included Galmo and Althea Williams of the Edward Gartland Youth Center and Gilley’s Family Foundation, Marion Williams founding member of the SNAP Center, Jasmine Thomas of the Youth Department, Angela Williams founder of Ashley’s Learning Center and Tanis Wake-Forbes cofounder of the Provo Children’s Home.

Junior Humanitarian of the Year nominees included Estacio Ariza for his work in promoting culture in the community of North Caicos, Briann Gardiner for her contributions to the community of North Caicos, Jessica Corvil for Youth Empowerment, Arian Louis in the area of education and youth empowerment and Ryesha Higgs for her immediate response to vulnerable residents following hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

Premier Robinson defends record

Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson has defended her record, two years after being elected the first premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The following is her message:

“On Dec 15th the people of this country voted overwhelmingly for Change and gave the PDM the green light to effect this Change through its Party’s Manifesto/Platform entitled the Change Document. On December 20th we were sworn in and formed the 11th Government.

This victory shocked our chief opponents who remain fragmented and bitter. There is no wonder they choose to focus on what has not yet been done and ignore all that has been accomplished even against two major Storms which interrupted our economy for several months. Whilst we are pleased and pleasantly surprised that the PNP has such lofty expectations particularly their desire to see us complete a 4 yr mandate in 2 years, we will continue to seek not to disappoint

them and the people of this country.

We will however remain focused on the people’s priority as given us through our consultation with them through polling and our quarterly Town Hall Meetings and against the Change Document which I invite the PNP to acquaint themselves with it.

We believe it important at this midterm point to give a full account against the mandate given through our Change Document - our contract with the People. Over the next two years, we will continue to fulfill our 4 year mandate.

We are proud of our achievements and are particularly grateful for God’s hand in this country.

It was His grace that brought us as a people through the ravishing effects of two Storms and the continued external pressures including those on our Financial Services Sector.

Our record is clear, we are achieving our mandate; our promises are being fulfilled even against PNP’s (and specifically the Leader of the Opposition’s) criticism during the Service Charge Debate, that we are

Organizers of Maskanoo promises an epic event in 2018

Maskanoo, Turks and Caicos Islands most popular street festival of the year is promises to be an epic event, says Stacey Cox, Chief Executive Officer of the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) and an organizer of the event.

The free event, now in its eighth year and which is slated for December 26th, will have a kick off time of 3 p.m. and will see persons mingling with vendors who will be on hand with a wide selection of items including hand-painted arts and crafts made from local materials.

During a press conference on Wednesday December 19th to launch detailed for the event Cox said, “If we look back, it is almost nine years since David Bowen had the conversation with the association about Maskanoo, an opportunity for cultures to collide with our visiting tourists and an opportunity for locals and everyone to come out on Grace Bay road and enjoy the festivities of the season.”

She added: “This is the brainchild of David Bowen sponsored by the Hotel and Tourism Association

and every year we see David bring the Maskanoo festivities from strength to strength and every year we’re looking forward to new local talents being displayed out there and..the creativity that brings to Maskanoo every year.

We always look forward to the street vendors and a great opportunity also to display local talents, music and everything that we have here in Turks and Caicos.”

Cox stresses that security of both residents and visitors is a priority and encourages persons to come and celebrate without worry. “One of the things that we take most seriously is security. As usual, the Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force will be out in full effect along with officers of the Dove security firm. We are also adding additional manpower from the security team for this year’s event.”

The TCHTA CEO reminds residents that the Grace Bay Road between Salt Mills and the Seven Stars Resort will be closed off from 11:00 a.m. to facilitate setup for the event.

Commenting on the plans, Bowen said: “Maskanoo is not something that you just sit and watch, you participate. It is a street festival,

It is great for the family but also there is some challenges with getting funding but we want to thank the Tourist Board, TCHTA and we also have Danny Buoys and all of the vendors here on the strip, they all contribute to Maskanoo. As always it is going to grow and we have two more years before that 10th year anniversary and that will be the bomb for sure.”

The festivities will continue until midnight with local with DJ’s and David Bowen’s with his rendition of local stories and dances from the

$8million for the redevelopment of Prison, says Premier Robinson

Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright Robinson revealed that the cost for the redevelopment of Her Majesty’s Prisons in Grand Turk will be $8million.

A full proposal was sent to Cabinet for the redevelopment of the prison that focuses on rehabilitation.

Robinson stated that she hears the criticism but they’re on their way to improving the prison facility.

“More than two months ago even before the Human Rights Commission report that we are yet to see, my government took to Cabinet a full proposal for the redevelopment of the prison that focuses on rehabilitation to the tune of about $8million. We have a proposal that excites the United Kingdom (UK) because that is the first time that we actually have a redevelopment of the prison and we’re doing it block by block and it focuses really heavily on rehabilitation,” Premier Robinson said during a press conference on Tuesday December 11th.

She added: “Her Majesty’s Prison has been in a dilapidated state for so long, which is why we have not just complained about it and try to do some of the work but we’ve been stagnated in getting work done in that we’ve had nowhere to relocate prisoners.

When we first came to office there was

about $300,000 allocated for perimeter fencing, plumbing and lighting and we tried feverishly to prepare even the green door. Persons will remember the outrage by communities, but we’re looking at those prisoners that have extremely low risk.”

In addition, Robinson said that her government got to a place where they couldn’t find enough of them to be able to do the work on the blocks.

She further stated that it got worse when the maximum wing was burnt down and the numbers are continuing at the same level, so there is extra overcrowding.

“What we have done, and it should have been already tendered while we were out of country, the rebuilding of that block so now they are all housed together and we can actually do that work and be moving persons over.”

Robinson continued: “I won’t say that I have a weakness for prisoners, but the fact is I believe that how we treat them, how we detain them and how we try to rehabilitate them impacts the way that they come back into the community and we must absolutely not continue to punish them for the rest of their lives, but allow them to successfully re-enter society.”

Asked about the help that the United Kingdom has given to Her Majesty’s Prison, the Premier confirmed that they have spent over 2million pounds in the provision of additional officers when our officers weren’t stably coming to work.

“The UK came on board since last year October when I said to them that this is going to be a priority for us and I’ve said this probably a million times in Turks and Caicos, there are only two things that I’ve asked the United Kingdom for once we would have completed a recovery plan, is assistance with the prison and for housing. We have a large number of persons who were impacted by the hurricanes who have not been able to benefit under insurance proceedings or even the continued exemptions that we give as a government and they were on board since day one,” she explained.

Robinson expressed her thanks to the United Kingdom for all of the work and support that they have provided to the Turk and Caicos Islands.

“We are grateful for what they’ve done and they remain committed to it and only a few days ago I got a letter again from the Minister speaking to their commitment and of course wanting to see us demonstrate at least the rebuilding of the block to show that we have some skin in the game. They are committed towards it and in fact the visit by Ben Merrick is Director, Overseas Territories (OTs), and he was there at the prison visiting the prison together with the Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Delroy Williams.”

She said.

Commissioner of Police James Smith’s Christmas message

Commissioner of Police James Smith has been given a second extension to his contract.

Reliable sources told The SUN that Smith, who contract was supposed to end at the end of December 2018, has been asked to stay on for a few more months.

Smith was sworn in March 2015 for two years. The length of the extension could not confirmed up to the time of this report and, Smith did not respond to a request for comment through police press officer Takara Bain.

Meantime, in his Christmas message, Smith said the royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force would like to sincerely thank citizens for their contribution towards maintaining law and order throughout the territory.

“I cannot overemphasize how important community involvement is in the fight against crime, and the need for the police and citizens to create a stronger relationship. Fighting crime is everyone’s business,” he said. “Throughout 2018, we have experienced tremendous success, a steady decrease in crime overall, the implementation of modern technologies through new equipment and training, the introduction of the CCTV technology and 911 upgrades, and the opening of the Ethel Ingham centre that will enhance the service and care given to victims of sexual offences.”

He added: “

Smith, a Scottish veteran, has served in the position of Commissioner for three years. Before taking on this role in Turks and Caicos, he held the Cayman Islands police commissioner’s job during an interim period in late 2008 and early 2009.

Prior to his Cayman Islands appointment, Commissioner Smith served as a commander in London’s Metropolitan Police. He was also a part of the Scottish Police Force.

In a detailed message sent out to the TCI population shortly after his appointment, Smith promised that he will make a difference in the country by building trust with local communities and using his expertise to boost the skill sets of our officers in order to keep our country safe.

“Ten Pillars of Short Change”

rom the Fanciful to the Absurd: The PDM sleep walks into the second half of its four year mandate.

Real change is achieved by real leadership, and real leaders. Real leaders are authentic, possessing self-knowledge and humility - in other words, true leaders.

“A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.” --Douglas MacArthur

The roof is on fire and the PDM is playing follow the leader: Ministers and other elected PDM representatives are uncritically going along with the imperial leadership style of the Premier and are dancing in place.

Leaders who exercise power and authority responsibly don’t command; they help people identify what changes in their principles, behaviors, performances and priorities will be needed to accommodate changing conditions and new demands.

But the Premier’s style of leadership is ineffective and dangerous.

It betrays cowardice, insecurity and lack of empathy. It hinders people’s ability to anticipate and react to changing circumstances.

But then again, the current state was predictable from the many absurd promises in the PDM’s manifesto. These seem to have been based on astrology - the divination of outcomes rather than objective achievable output. This is obvious from the PDM’s obsession with numerology reflected in the “Change Document.” And reads like a child’s wish list at Christmas time. The numerous repetitive “flights of fancy” are broadly speaking included under the four broad headings below:

We make commitments to others all the time. However, sometimes circumstances over which we have no control prevent us from keeping some promises. What is unacceptable is knowingly making promises that cannot be kept or worse, that we have no intention of keeping. It really boils down to how many promises one knowingly breaks, and how one responds when one is unable to deliver on an achievable promise. Failure to keep our promises is a clear and unequivocal reflection of our view of the recipients of those broken promises. It is especially egregious for someone in public office to break promises made to followers. It speaks to the trustworthiness or lack thereof of the leader. “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned” Matthew 12:37.

The PDM administration has broken just about every promise in its 2016 manifesto, especially those it promised to deliver within the first 100 days in office.

The PDM administration needs to show some respect for the electorate, admit its failures, explain why and apologise for those broken promises to date and for those promises which it knows by now is unrealistic and unachievable. An unachievable promise is a comfort to fool.

The people of the Turks and Caicos deserve better.

The iconic Sands hotel celebrates 20 year anniversary

After 20 years of great service to the Turks and Caicos Islands, On Saturday, December 15th, 2018,The Sands Resort & Hemingways celebrated towards many more years in the future.

Official opened on December 19th, 1998, the resort definitely made its mark and paved the way for others in the industry.

Among those in attendance at the celebration event were original condo-owners, and past employees from opening date, Stacy Cox TCHTA Executive Director, Executive team members and James Smith Commissioner of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.

The night included performances by V6 Band and Prime DJs, Fire Dancer, Bon Fire, Junkanoo and dancers, Clement Howell Band and Choir and ended with a fireworks segment.

In addition, the resort and the restaurant provided special awards to their employees of the year, supervisors of the year and managers of the year.

The Sands: Employee of the year (heart of the house) was- Meshell Cox, Employee of the year (front of the house) - Delroy McIntosh, Supervisor of the Year- Annecie Augustin and Manager of the year- Denario Cook.

As for Hemingway’s: Employee

of the year- (heart of the house) was Jean Elie Revert, Employee of the year (front of the house)- Dary Toussaint and Manager of the year- Tracy Smith.

All 15, 10 and 5 year employees received service award pins. Twentyyears employees were Ms. Shirley Morgan, Ms. Pauline Theodore Stan Hartling and Terry Drummey.

A special replica of The Sands at Grace Bay and Hemingway’s cake was made by Palms’ pastry chef.

CEO and lead partner of The Hartling Group, Stan Hartling told The SUN in an interview, “The party was mainly to celebrate with our staff, some of which have been with us since the opening of the resort 20 years ago which is incredible. We also invited owners who owned the property as condo owners and again some of them have been with us since the very beginning, and of course all of our key executives and other dignitaries around the islands. This was an internal celebration for those who’ve been dedicated to the property for so many years.”

He added: “I think that the thing that makes me smile even more than anything is more than just being proud of the resort, I think that the bigger part of that celebration is what the Sands has lead to. I think sometimes from an island standpoint, ourselves included, forget what an important little icon that property was.”

Hartling noted that The Sands is one of the first two resorts of its kind on the island when there was really only one or two other small hotels and it has since really been the guiding light for all of the resorts that came behind it.

“Had that property not be successful, we probably wouldn’t see a quarter of the amount of hotels that we see today on the beach because the next persons after us bought all of it because they saw that The Sands was successful and then the Sands led to The Palms and The Palms was successful which lead to Seven Stars and other projects coming along and

now, obviously the Shore Club.”

Hartling added that this resort became the thing that gave investors confidence and buyer’s confidence to invest in the next version of what that concept was with the condo hotels.

Furthermore, he stressed that without the staff and team at the resort it would not have been what it is today.

“Without our staff all it would be is a building that wouldn’t exactly have much of a life to it. I think that the one that I hope shows in our track record are that not only do we care about the team, but the team cares about each other. Our philosophy is that it is always 100 percent the employer caring. It is about us creating a culture where we care about each other and then you truly have a group that wants to work together. I think that has been very successful for us and we’re always so pleased when we see that we have staff that has been with us for so many years,” he continued.

Hartling said that he believes The Sands is an example for many resorts and they are very thankful for the blessings of being on this beautiful island.

“We are also thankful for being able to feel that we’ve hopefully as a group and as a team, including our employees that we’ve been able to set a positive example for other things to take place,” he concluded.

Premier holds Youth Forum

Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson will host a Youth Forum during a special Facebook Live event at the Beaches Resort in Providenciales on Friday, January 4th, 2019. The two-hour event begins at 7:00 pm.

Premier Robinson says she is eager to hear the views of and take questions from the young people in the territory.

“We are building a responsive democracy, and it is important to hear from the young people especially since they make up such a significant part of the territory,” she said.

“Additionally, for any society to advance, it must have the full engagement of its youth, and so we think that this is a necessary part of the development process,” the Premier added.

Although the event is expected to accommodate views expressed face-to-face during the event and via the live Facebook broadcast, a team will also gather feedback from people on the street prior to the event in efforts to capture issues expressed by youth from all walks of life.

“We are coming to the event

to listen and learn; and to ensure that we are tuned-in to the dreams and aspirations of our children and our youth,” Hon Cartwright-Robinson said.

Minister for Education, Youth, Sports and Library Services; Hon. Karen Malcolm indicated that, “we are looking forward to the full engagement of the youth of the territory, and we are seeking to have representatives from all districts.”

The event comes at a time when the government is seeking to inspire constitutional change that will deepen the democratic process here, and put more power in the hands of residents.

Sandals Foundation and Hasbro Bring Christmas Joy to Hundreds

In what has become a highly anticipated annual tradition, the Sandals Foundation, in partnership with Hasbro, distributed hundreds of toys to children across Providenciales to “share the cheer” this holiday season. Local children were given the opportunity to party with Sandals Foundation Volunteers and the Jolly Ole’ St. Nick while receiving gifts and toys at several Christmas drives held across the island.

“Our partnership with Hasbro, Inc have allowed us to expand our annual toy drive to include not only students of our sponsored schools but also several children in the Providenciales community,” said Elanor Finfin Krzanowski, Public Relations Manager and organizer of the annual toy drive. “This year we were able to bring an early Christmas to over hundreds of local kids and our goal is to keep expanding to bring holiday cheers to as many kids as possible.”

Each year the Sandals Foundation initiates an international Holiday Toy Drive, encouraging the support of travel and industry partners, team members and the public to donate a toy to a needy child.

Madam Premier, do not blame the Opposition for your grief and despair

by Hon. Dr. Royal S. Robinson MBE, Chairman, Progressive National Party

It is very disappointing, but par for the course for this Premier.

She is acting like President Trump in blaming the Opposition for her failures.

She seems to have forgotten that she campaigned for the job of Premier so that she could be the mover and shaker, but now that she is in the driver’s seat as the “best man for the job”, that the grass is only greener when looking from the outside.

One of her ministers some time remarked in the House of Assembly that he didn’t realize that governing was hard work. That sentiment seems to percolate from the head to the toe!

Let us look at the blame game with respect to Constitutional advancement that we all want. After the review led by Dan Malcolm, the UK rejected those proposals out of hand.

Their response was read in the House of Assembly after it was received.

Everyone knew that save and except the Premier. Yes the Opposition was engaged to move the process forward and we did on two occasions.

We were to the point of having our position ratified by our Party Stalwarts.

Process was that we would have that agreement and on a bipartisan basis hold a series of town hall meetings to gage the views of the public, even if it meant changing the thrust of the current position and adding more to bolster our position.

We would then be able to say that we have the full backing and blessings of the Turks and Caicos Islands people when we engage the UK on a date for bipartisan Constitutional talks.

Before we could conclude all of the arrangements, the leadership contest came into play and we advised the Premier that we would disengage until this was concluded.

The Premier, in trying to be “previous” and score petty political points set her own time to come on the back end of the JMC, an annual event between the UK and all the OTs. This did not give sufficient time to hold meaningful discussions and make the requisite changes.

It was sheer laziness and no attention to detail the reason why the Premier sent up to the UK the exact text of a document that had already

been rejected.

Yes, we used it internally as a starting point of our discussions, but that had to be jettisoned before any discussions with the UK as were to be taking a different perspective, bearing in mind the failed previous attempt.

The Premier got slapped around by the UK, even though they were mired in the stalled Brexit negotiations.

Madam Premier, do not blame the Opposition for your grief and despair. You wanted to come back from the UK flaunting a document to show that you had what it takes to govern on the heels of the disaster of the Service Charge Bill’s implementation date being pulled back. You just got hung by your own petard!

Now you have to eat crow and wait for a full engagement by the Opposition and a demonstrable backing of the public for whatever is being proposed. It is instructive that in a previous correspondence that the UK cited the number of persons who attended the Malcolm’s exercise to be 200?

Remember, it was never the intention of the Premier for the hospitality workers to get what in the

FLOW brings Christmas cheer to 18 local families

In effort to spread Christmas joy throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands Community, Flow TCI in partnership with Grace Way IGA donated gift certificates of $150 each to 18 families, while celebrating their annual Mission Day on Friday December 14th.

This year FLOW TCI saw it fit to reach out to some of the less fortunate, the ones that are most deserving and put some smiles on their faces.

Delleriece Hall, Country Manager of Cable & Wireless Communications, operators of the brand Flow said, “Our Mission Day started about four years ago. The first mission we did was when we went to Oseta Jolly Primary School and we fed 500 students at that time and then the next year we went and painted the Provo Children’s Home and we fed the students that resided at that home. Last year we went back to the Oseta Jolly Primary School and we put smiles on those students’ faces after experiencing such devastating storm in 2017 with hurricane Irma.”

She added: “This year we decided to go out and reach out to some of the less fortunate, the ones that are most deserving and we contacted social services where we were given names of 18 families and because it’s 2018, we

We don’t have oil, gold, bauxite or gas, but we have the best beach in the world Continue to protect and maintain our tourism industry

We do not have oil, gold, bauxite or gas but Grace Bay Beach on the island of Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands, is considered to be the best Beach in the World.

Almost every year for the past couple of years, Grace Bay Beach was selected by guests, travel agents and international media outlets as the best Beach in the World. We cannot and should not take this for lightly.

With that said, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Ministry of Tourism headed by Hon. Ralph Higgs, the Tourist Board headed

by Mr. Ramon Andrews and chaired

by Mr. Norman Hamilton and the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association headed by Stacy Cox for the various activities during the entire month of November and for their efforts in promoting, protecting and maintaining our main industry.

While November is the Tourism Awareness Month celebrations, all of us need to play our part in ensuring that tourism matters every day as it is our Bread and Butter.

Our bread and butter

In 2017, there were 1,243,843 visitors to the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Of the 1,243, 843 visitors, 416,434 arrived by plane while 827,409 arrived by cruise.

In 2016, there were 1,300,575 visitors. Of this amount, 453,612 arrived by plane while 846,943 arrived by cruise.

As a result of these visitors, the Government was able to generate accommodation tax of $59,152,185 for the year ended March 31, 2018while

the accommodation tax for the year ended March 31, 2017 was $61,544,345.

In addition, the Airport Authorities overall revenue estimate for March 31, 2018 was $39,015,091. Of this amount, $14, 226,182 was departure tax.

Therefore almost $100m is generated directly from Tourism.

Based on the national skills audit, 31% of the employment in TCI is in the accommodation and food service activities. The total labour force is 15,279.

Of course, there are other areas that benefit from tourism such as the creation of new jobs for customs and immigration officers at the airport and cruise port to accommodate the visitors.

Serve and treat our visitors well

While many of us are fighting and arguing over service charge, please ensure that we serve our visitors with the exceptional customer service from the time they arrive at the airport or cruise center to the time they leave.

Treat them so well that the Turks and Caicos Islands will be the only place that they will want to vacation. How can we treat them well? Be Polite, friendly and smile all the time with our visitors. Do not Rob them physically or with the overpricing of your products and services.

Do not harass them. If they want something, they will find you. Do not mislead them with your advertisement. Follow up and respond to their requests promptly. If they row you, don’t row them back. I am by no means suggesting that you treat the visitors as Gods but simply treat them with respect. Yes some of us receive bad treatment when travelling abroad

Our Beaches are our greatest natural resource. However, too many times we leave trash at the beaches which is an eyesore not only for tourist but all of us. No one wants to go to a dirty beach. Do not leave trash at the beach and if you see trash at the beach, do your part by removing them. If you see someone doing it, report them as there are fines for littering.

Keep our islands clean

Not only are people littering the beach, some are littering the highways and the streets. This is a turn off to tourists. I remember a friend of mine visited an island in the Caribbean and I asked them how they like that island. The response was the island was too dirty and they do not want to go back. This can happen to us too. We cannot afford to lose this industry.

Protect our coral reefs

TCI is home to one of the longest reefs in world. While do not have much land-based activities in TCI, our activities for tourists are focused on water based involving the viewing of our coral reefs Therefore, we must ensure that we protect our reefs. There is a foundation call Turks and Caicos Reef Fund. You can do your part by donating to this fund whose objective is to preserve and protect the environment. You can also do your part by ensuring you do not destroy

our reefs either through overfishing or through the use of cyanide which poisons the reef.

Reduce crime

One of the priority lists of any tourist is that the destination is safe.

While our destination is safer compare to others, we must ensure that we have an aggressive plan of action not only to reduce crimes but to solve the crimes that take place.

Conclusion

Do not take our Bread and Butter for Granted. Do not take the selection of our beach as #1 for granted.

Visitors have choices. They do not have to come to Turks and Caicos Islands.

How many of us remember what it was like growing up? We did not have much and now that we have something, we seem to be taking things for granted.

Clean up when you leave the Beach. Be friendly and polite. We must protect and maintain our bread and butter.

he Human Rights Commission recently made history in honoring the first ever Humanitarians in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The first annual Humanitarian of the Year Awards recognized the outstanding contributions of several individuals within the Turks and Caicos

Islands during a gala ceremony on Saturday, December 15th.

Former Premier and Proprietor of Gilley’s Enterprises Hon. Galmo Williams and his wife Mrs. Althea Williams were Humanitarians of the Year, while Jessica Corvil won the 2018 Junior Humanitarian Award for her work in youth empowerment.

Hosted at the Shore Club Resort, the gala was held on the backdrop of the Human Rights Commission’s 10th anniversary within the Turks and Caicos Islands, in an effort to highlight humanitarianism within these islands.

LIFESTYLE Friday report cards tied to higher risk of child abuse

Kids who bring home report cards on Fridays may be more likely to experience child abuse afterward than kids who get their grades on other days, a U.S. study suggests.

Researchers examined data on report card release dates at elementary schools and 1,943 cases of physical abuse called into a child abuse hotline over one academic year and verified

by Florida’s child welfare agency.

Abuse cases were more than three times more likely to happen on Saturdays after a report-card Friday than on Saturdays when children hadn’t gotten their grades the day before, the study found. The spike in abuse only appeared when report cards came home on Fridays, not when kids received them on other days of the week.

“Our hypothesis is that Fridays are substantively different than weekdays for most families and that these conditions may increase the chances of physical abuse if report cards are added to the mix,” said lead study author Melissa Bright of the University of Florida in Gainesville.

The study wasn’t designed to prove whether or how the timing of report cards might influence child abuse.

Furthermore, the researchers had very little verified abuse data to work with. Out of 167,906 calls to the child abuse hotline involving kids from five to 11 years old, only about one percent were verified instances of physical abuse.

But Fridays might be the worst timing because parents have higher levels of stress after a full work week, or because parents may choose to drink alcohol or use drugs on Friday evenings but not during the work week, Bright said by email. Some parents may also consider the potential for being caught before being physically violent with kids, Bright added.

“To the extent that our findings are indicative of corporal punishment turned into physical abuse, it may be that parents choose to use corporal punishment more - or to use more severe punishment - on days when their children will not be exposed to mandated child abuse reporters such as teachers at school,” Bright said.

More than half of parents report using corporal punishment for children younger than 10 years old, and most parents do so for children from two to eight years old, researchers note in JAMA Pediatrics. Corporal

punishment is legal in the U.S. and may result in pain, but it’s considered abuse when it causes injuries.

While abuse might be motivated by poor grades or behavior at school, kids who are abused are also more likely than other children to struggle with academics and attention as well as emotional and behavioral problems, the authors note.

In Florida for the school year studied, report cards were most likely to come home on Friday, followed by Thursday.

It’s possible that what happens in Florida isn’t representative of what might happen elsewhere in the country.

Still, parents need to understand spanking doesn’t improve kids grades or behavior, and often has the opposite effect, said Dr. Antoinette Laskey of the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City, who wrote an editorial published with the study.

“Spanking also has a significant negative effect on the parent-child relationship,” Laskey said by email. “Parents would do better to understand why their child is struggling in school and seek to address that issue as opposed to instilling fear of consequences for bad grades.”

Most obese patients who qualify for weight loss surgery don’t seek it out, and that may be due at least partly to stigma, a U.S. survey suggests.

Nearly half of randomly-chosen survey participants said they believe the procedure is usually done for cosmetic rather than health reasons, and about 40 percent thought people who choose the surgery have taken “the easy way out,” researchers report in JAMA Surgery.

“Across the United States, there are adults who have obesity, and the health problems that come with obesity, who are not getting or even seeking the care they need because of the social stigma with being obese and having obesity surgery,” said senior author Dr. Heather Yeo of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. “This is actually a problem with physicians, too. Often they give patients advice to lose weight, but they don’t refer the patient to a weight loss specialist.”

Weight loss surgery involves one of several techniques for making the stomach smaller, to accommodate less food and curb appetite, sometimes also rerouting part of the digestive tract to bypass part of the intestines.

Patients with a body mass index (BMI) in the obese and severely obese ranges are considered good candidates for the procedure.

These procedures, called bariatric surgery, can improve a host of conditions, including diabetes, hypertension and joint pain, Yeo said.

To assess how the public views bariatric surgery, Yeo and colleagues got three questions added to The Cornell National Social Survey, an annual survey that uses random-digit dial telephone sampling of English-speaking U.S. adults.

The questions were: Do you think people mostly have weight loss surgery for cosmetic or for health reasons?; Do you think weight loss surgery is usually an “easy way out?”; and Should health insurance cover medical procedures to help people lose weight?

Of the 948 people who answered these questions, 49.4 percent thought people had weight loss surgery for cosmetic reasons, 39.1 percent said people usually chose surgery as “the easy way out” and just 19.2 percent thought insurance should always pay for it.

Women were 34 percent more likely than men to say the surgery was for health reasons, 54 percent less likely to say it’s “the easy way out,” and 48 percent less likely to say insurance shouldn’t cover it. Non-Hispanic blacks were 61 percent more likely than others to call surgery “the easy way out.”

The findings align with other researchers’ findings, Yeo said.

St. Vincent PM says he heard tape of man plotting to kill him

Prime Minister of St. Vincent Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says he has heard a tape of a Vincentian man trying to contract someone to kill him.

Gonsalves, however, did not say, whether any charges were ever brought against the man, whose voice he said he recognised.

On Dec. 9 at Campden Park, the prime minister told the 23rd annual convention of the Unity Labour Party of the plot.

Gonsalves has over the years spoken publicly, including in Parliament, about what he said were plots to assassinate him.

He, however, told party supporters that he had never before spoken publicly about the assassination plot that he revealed to ULP supporters at the convention, where he would be re-elected as leader of the ULP.

“The other day, some NDP people on radio were celebrating a man who has been to jail in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for all sorts of thing,” he said.

“You know, they start this

thing over 10 years go. There is this fella who the NDP wants to proclaim as some kind of a gorgon. The security forces come to me one day with an allied agency from overseas. They said that so and so was recruiting a Puerto Rican to kill you. And the person who was doing it was a man from the Dominican Republic whom the security agency overseas was tracking because he had been in jail in New Jersey and had been deported to the Dominican Republic.”

Gonsalves said he told both police in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the overseas agency that they watch too many spy movies.

“They said, ‘Prime Minister, we are serious.’ And the agency from overseas played a recording and I heard the voice of the man from St. Vincent telling the man from the Dominican Republic, ‘Yes I hear about that man from Puerto Rico. I heard that he does do a clean job. I want him to do a clean job on Ralph,’” Gonsalves said.

“They are getting desperate,” Gonsalves said. “You see, it not easy to

Barbados’ financial system is too dependent on commercial banks, unbalanced, narrow, and not good at mobilizing domestic savings for domestic investment, Professor Avinash Persuad said.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s Special Envoy on Investment and Financial Services holds the view that a heavy dependence on the banks must change, if the economy is to grow, and new jobs created.

“We need other, perhaps new institutions, to take the risks that we need to grow our economy. We need to strengthen our financial ecosystem,” he said in a Barbados Today report.

“We have the problem of missing markets, missing financial institutions, missing segments of a financial ecosystem. Junior doctors in The Bahamas vote to strike

More than 200 junior doctors voted to strike, claiming there is an unresolved issue over their holiday pay.

According to the Nassau Guardian, this comes two weeks after senior doctors ended their withdrawal of services and nurses voted to strike.

Director of Labour John Pinder said the preliminary results from New Providence and Grand Bahama showed that 207 doctors voted to strike and one voted against it. He said there was one spoil ballot.

While the results were not yet in from the Family Islands, Pinder said those votes will not be enough to overturn the outcome of the strike vote as fewer than 30 doctors would have voted in those islands.

“Physicians are not paid, like everybody else, the double pay [we’re] entitled to when we work on holidays,” said Dr. Melisande Bassett, president of the Bahamas Doctors Union (BDU).

“It’s an illegal practice. It’s an issue we’ve been battling with Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) and the board since 2012. We’ve filed a trade dispute with [the Department of Labour] actually on two occasions to have them begin to start paying doctors.”

She added: “So where we’re at now is if we can’t get this solved amicably, we’re going to have to take strike action against them because they will not follow proper protocols and procedures to negotiate in good faith.”

In September, junior physicians demonstrated in front of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), claiming those who work on public holidays have consistently not been compensated.

“For us, this is personal,” said the union in September.

“In a field where eating Christmas dinner from a Tupperware container or celebrating special events vicariously through photographs has become the norm, it is unfair and outright criminal to be denied holiday pay.”

Bassett said the doctors wanted to avert a strike.

She said the union wanted to avoid causing a similar disruption in healthcare services that resulted from the recent withdrawal of services by senior physicians.

But according to Bassett, junior doctors were left with no other choice.

“It’s not something we want because we know the upheaval it caused with the consultants when they stepped out,” she said.

“We expect that services will be interrupted [and] that’s not our ideal position but if we’re forced to take it because they refuse to deal with us sensibly, [then] logically we will have to do that. Our first option is for them to pay the required double time that the law requires without us having to spend money out of pocket to go to the Supreme Court and make them do it.”

“The PHA tried to satisfy them but they don’t have [any] record of the amount of holidays owed to these people and they are not satisfied that the record they are receiving from the doctors is accurate. The PHA left with the view of settling but there is this fight over the record keeping of these public holidays and overtime.”

In all, 83 complaints were filed against Kavanaugh by “lawyers, doctors, professors and concerned citizens, among others,” according to Chief Judge Timothy Tymkovich of the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Some complaints also related to Senate testimony Kavanaugh gave in 2004 and 2006 when he was a nominee to become a federal appeals court judge.

“Congress has not extended the Judicial Conduct and Disability Act to Supreme Court justices,” Tymkovich wrote for the panel of judges, part of the Judicial Council of the 10th Circuit.

As they piled up at the Washington appeals court, U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts in October transferred the complaints to be handled by that council.

During hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kavanaugh denied allegations that he sexually assaulted a California professor when the two were teenagers in Maryland in the 1980s. The arguments echo similar ones in the United States, where some monuments to the U.S. Civil War-era Confederacy have been removed after protests and vandalism.

“The removal of a statue isn’t the end of the conversation” about legacies of the past, said Nicole Maurantonio, an academic at the University of Richmond in Virginia who is working on a book about how the Confederacy is remembered today. She spoke on the sidelines of a forum titled “Falling Monuments, Reluctant Ruins,” held last month at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of a Los Angeles auxiliary bishop, Monsignor Alexander Salazar, following allegations of misconduct with a minor in the 1990s, officials said Wednesday.

The Vatican announced the resignation in a one-line statement. It was the latest in a string of cases of alleged misconduct against bishops to come to light this year, following the scandal of ex-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick that exposed how bishops have largely avoided sanction for improper behavior.

The current archbishop of Los Angeles, Most Rev. Jose Gomez, said the archdiocese was made aware of the claim in 2005. Gomez said prosecutors declined to bring charges, but that the archdiocese forwarded the complaint to the Vatican office that handles sex abuse cases.

Gomez said that office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, imposed precautionary measures against Salazar and that a further investigation by the archdiocese’s independent review board found the allegation to be credible.

Gomez said Salazar, 69, has “consistently denied any wrongdoing.” The archdiocese said it had received no other allegations against Salazar.

“These decisions have been made out of deep concern for the healing and reconciliation of abuse victims and for the good of the church’s mission,” Gomez told the Los Angeles faithful in a letter. “Let us continue to stay close to the victim survivors of abuse, through our prayer and our actions.”

Gomez said that the alleged misconduct occurred while Salazar was a parish priest in the 1990s, and that the claim was never directly brought to the archdiocese. Other details weren’t released.

The resignation comes during a year in which the clerical abuse scandal has exploded anew in the U.S. and elsewhere. In July, Francis removed McCarrick, the retired archbishop of Washington, as a cardinal after a U.S. church investigation determined that an allegation he groped a minor in the 1970s was credible.

Subsequently several adult seminarians have said he pressured them to sleep with him.

McCarrick has denied the initial allegation and through a lawyer has said he looks forward to invoking his right to due process.

The McCarrick scandal exposed the loopholes in how the church treats allegations of misconduct against bishops, who are answerable only to the pope. The Turks and Caicos Islands Women in Sports, an arm of the Commonwealth Games Association, held it’s 5th Annual Christmas Gala and Awards Ball on Saturday 15th December at the Margaritaville, Carnival Cruise Port under the theme “A Winter Wonderland” . By all accounts, the event was a huge success by President Angela Brooks and committee members.

In attendance to celebrate with the Honourees were the Premier, Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson and Mr. Robinson, Minister of Sports, Hon. Edwin Astwood, Minister of Education, Youth and Library Services, Hon. Karen Malcolm and Hon. Temard Butterfield who blessed the food.
