T

urks and Caicos Islands youngest female deputy governor, Her Excellency Anya Williams and former Premier Hon. Galmo Williams and his wife Mrs. Althea Williams were recently rewarded for excellence in public service and humanitarian activity, respectively. On December 13th, 2018, the deputy governor was invested with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her service over many years to the Turks and Caicos Islands, at Buckingham Palace in London, by Prince Charles, who is the heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest child of Queen Elizabeth II. On December 15th, the former premier and his wife were the recipients of the Turks and Caicos Islands Human Rights Commission’s first ever Humanitarian of the Year Awards. The Deputy Governor told The SUN: “I am honored to have been awarded a Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Her Majesty’s Government for service to my beloved Turks and Caicos Islands. I recently marked my 15th year of service to the Turks and Caicos Government where I would have served 9 years in the Ministry of Finance as Budget Director and PS Finance and the last 6 years as Deputy Governor.” The top Civil Servant, who is married to Darren Williams, added: “During my tenure I would have assisted and led on a number of key reform programs, but as I stated when I received notification of this award on the Queen’s official birthday in June, more than any title or accolade, I would like for my legacy in the service to be measured by testimonies of the number of lives that I would have touched during my tenure by

Her Excellency Deputy Governor Anya Williams receiving her MBE award from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace generally working for the betterment of these islands and our people. I would like to thank everyone across the Turks and Caicos and also those aboard for the outpouring of love, support and best wishes received on this occasion and would like to personally thank my family, friends and colleagues for their constant support and motivation.” Commenting on the award she shared with her husband, Mrs. Althea Ewing stated: “We are immensely humbled and filled with gratitude by this accolade. That special moment the announcement was made will forever be etched in our hearts. We wish that we could have shared that moment with all the nominees, for the simple fact that their names were brought forward also makes them worthy of such an award,

but the real winner last night was our communities and those individuals who have allowed all of us to continue doing good for them. Today we would like to challenge all of the citizens of the Turks & Caicos by simply saying that it is our DUTY to give back whenever, wherever and however we can to our society. The motto that we personally live by is “God gave us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with”. The simple fact is that God blessed us so that we can be a blessing to others. This award have just refueled us, the work begins ANEW!” She added: “We wish to thank our families and friends as well as our employees for their Love, Trust & Support and for always being there

for us. Special thanks to our children, Desrene, Nadine, Desmond & Nikimo who are now tasked with the awesome responsibility to take our very own Foundation “Gilley’s Generation Foundation” to the next level. We also wish to thank the Business community for always being there supporting all of our ideas and the events that we’ve spearheaded over the years. We say thanks to those persons throughout the TCI who felt that we are worthy of such an award. We can’t say Thank You enough to the organizers of this Historic Event please continue to seek out the many among us whose only desire is to continue doing good for Humanity.”
