ANOTHER UK INQUIRY by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief
T
he United Kingdom (UK) is about to conduct another inquiry into ALL of its Overseas Territories (OTs) including the Turks and Caicos Islands. This inquiry by the UK’s Foreign Office, was announced on the UK Parliament’s website on July 20th, 2018, exactly 11 years after the July 2007 inquiry into all of the OTs which, among other things, uncovered “very serious allegations of corruption” in relation to the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). The new inquiry does not suggest or mean that the UK government has any evidence of corruption or wrongdoing in the Turks and Caicos Islands or any of the OTs. This time, according to the UK Government, the inquiry will focus on how the Foreign Office “manages its responsibility to ensure the security and stability” of the UK’s 14 Overseas Territories, which are: Anguilla; Bermuda; British Antarctic Territory (BAT); British Indian Ocean Territory; British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands;
Falkland Islands; Gibraltar; Montserrat; (Pitcairn Island, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands); (St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha); Sovereign Base Areas; (South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands) and Turks and Caicos Islands. A statement on the Foreign Office’s website quoted the Chair of the Committee, Tom Tugendhat MP, as saying: “The Overseas Territories have a special place in our constitution. They are self-governing but part of the United Kingdom. As our place in the world changes, we need to think about the effect on them and whether the structure of our relationships still work(s). The Committee will look at these distant parts of our community and look at how we work to support all our communities.” The July 2018 inquiry announcement stated: “Many (Overseas Territories) face similar challenges. Most raise their own revenues but many depend on funding from a range of (UK) government departments and international organisations. Many have struggled to build sustainable economies while adapting to the increasing demands of global transparency. Continued on page 2
