LIFE IN PRISON FOR HUMAN TRAFFICKING

ersons who engage in human trafficking and exploiting foreign workers can now face between ten years in jail to life imprisonment. These tough sentences are some of the provisions contained in the Trafficking in Persons Prevention Bill which was recently debated in the House of Assembly. Minister of Immigration and Labour Hon. Donhue Gardiner said although bars and restaurants in the Turks and Caicos Islands are not being specifically targeted, they will feel the full weight of the law if they are in violation of the new Bill. Gardiner said, “This is a very important bit of legislation and it really sets the TCI I think on a proper footing as far as trafficking persons are concerned. We’re not, contrary to what people have said in the public.. we’re not interested necessarily in going after bars where people work but know that if persons are trafficked and they end up at those bars, then those bars will not be out of the reach of the enforcement officers.” The minister said there has been no ban on bar owners being able to apply for work permits for persons from the Dominican Republic or Haiti or any other country. He said the new Bill is a very important bit of legislation that if we as a country are to move into the arena with other civilized countries it is something that ought to be done. He added: “Not necessarily because we are a country that is ripe with human trafficking but because we live in a world where anything is possible and most things can happen.” He noted that the bill seeks to make provisions for the prevention and the suppression of trafficking in persons and
First annual Color Run raised over $2,000
The first annual color run event took place last week Sunday January 31st , the event raised over $2,000 after expenses. The purpose of this event was to raise money to support the Provo hockey league which is one of the most expensive sports on the island. Organizers of the event said that the event was an overwhelming success and they look forward to making it even bigger and better with a few surprises next year. in particular to create the offence of trafficking in persons, assist victims of trafficking, to facilitate the investigation of cases of trafficking in persons and as well as to provide for the effective punishment of individuals and entities involved in trafficking in persons. Gardiner noted that the new law covers the abuse of persons who are vulnerable, including persons having entered the country illegally or without proper documentation, the person being pregnant, the person being mentally
incapacitated or disabled or if the person is a minor. He added: “Mr. Speaker a child is intended to mean a person who has not obtained the age of 18 years. Coercion includes threats of serious harm to or physical restraint against the person amongst some other things including the abuse or threatened abuse of the legal process.” He added: “There are a few others that may come out but there’s just one more in particular that I should
wish to draw particular reference to and that there is practices similar to slavery, servitude, sexually explicit conduct, and slavery. Speaker sexual exploitation which means compelling the participation of the person in prostitution, the production of child pornography or other pornographic material or any other sexual activity as a result of being subjected to threats, coercion, abduction as a result of the effects of narcotic drugs, forced abuse of minority or fraud.”
