LIE DETECTORS IN USE AT BEACHES

E

mployees at Beaches Resort and Spa in the Turks and Caicos Islands are outraged by the hotel’s decision to start asking staff to take lie detector tests. While hotel officials are saying that these tests are not mandatory, employees fear that they could lose their jobs if they refuse to subject themselves to this new policy. In fact, the SUN understands that some employees of Beaches which is owned by Jamaican hotelier Gordon “Butch” Stewart, are even considering taking the matter to the law courts to determine if taking these lie detector tests violates their constitutional rights. “It’s like you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t,” an employee told the SUN, while asking that their name not be published out of fear of retribution. “Who wants to say no if Sandals and Beaches tell you they want you to take a lie detector test? The bosses may tell you it’s not compulsory but then you just don’t know what will happen if you refuse. Trust me, a lot of team members are very concerned and unhappy about this.” In an exclusive interview with the SUN, Stephen Hector, the Global Public Relations Director for Sandals Resorts International (SRI), the parent company of Beaches Resort, confirmed that the lie detectors are being introduced. Hector stated: “As the world continues to evolve and the use of technology increases, Sandals Resorts International has introduced routine polygraph testing in a small number of departments at Beaches Turks and Caicos as part of a group-wide initiative.
