BAC 2022 FALL Business Advisory Council FALL MEETING THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2022 [8:00AM] NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY TRANSPORTATION CENTER 600 FOSTER STREET, EVANSTON, ILLINOIS 60208

WELCOME

BAC

We are delighted to welcome you back at Northwestern for the Fall 2022 BAC meeting!

We have invited Dean Julio Ottino to welcome you to the University and VP of Research Milan Mrksich to share an update on the Northwestern research enterprise.

Many of the challenges I mentioned in my spring letter have persisted, amid uncertainty about the global macroeconomic situation and the overall demand for freight service in the fourth quarter and beyond. Notably, the ongoing global turbulence associated with war-related disruptions in the supply of various

and increased volatility on both demand and supply sides. Last spring, the federal government announced an experiment in data sharing with industry, the Freight Logistics Optimization Works (FLOW) program, to

examine the FLOW program as a data sharing model for logistics. We have invited Andrew Petrisin, Supply Chain Advisor at USDOT, to provide an overview of FLOW. Then, BAC Chair Jeff Silver (Mastery Logistics Systems) will lead a discussion with Jason Craig (C.H. Robinson), Jennifer McNeill (True Value Company), Roger Nober (BNSF Railway), and Gene Seroka (Port of Los Angeles) to discuss FLOW’s impact thus far, how FLOW may be a blueprint for logistics collaboration, and the long-term role for the federal government in such collaborations, among other topics.

To address the labor situation, “Where are the Workers?”, we have invited Neil Collins from KornFerry to share insight into the perceived or real labor shortage, the expectations and behaviors of job seekers, recommendations for companies and governments to affect change, and impacts on the transportation sector. In continuation of our theme this year of looking toward a more sustainable future, our second panel examines the question, “To What Extent is Sustainability Affecting Strategy and Operational Decisions of Both Shippers and Carriers?” Professor Klaus Weber, the Thomas G. Ayers Chair in Energy Resource Management and professor of operations and management at thex Kellogg School of Management, will lead a conversation with Suresh Krishna (Northern Tool + Equipment), Christine Landmeier (United Airlines), and Doug Waggoner (Echo Global Logistics).

We are pleased to also showcase a recent NUTC research product, the Northwestern University Freight Rail Infrastructure & Energy Network Decarbonization (NUFRIEND) network planning tool to support evaluation of railroad decarbonization pathways, developed in collaboration with Argonne National Lab through an

from guidance from the Anacostia Rail, Association of America Railroads, BNSF, CSX, Norfolk Southern, and OmniTRAX.

Preceding our BAC reception and dinner, we were pleased to welcome a group of experts on supply chain visibility technologies, tools and best practices – Visibility Through the Supply Chain: Technologies and Best Practices– for the fall 2022 Industry Technical Workshop, a discussion aimed at addressing opportunities for visibility platforms to improve the resilience and reliability of supply chains. A highlight of the BAC dinner meeting was the opportunity to hear from Roger Nober, Executive Vice regulatory trends impacting the freight transportation sector.

We take pride in the trust our BAC companies have placed in our Transportation Center, and truly value the us and with our distinguished roster of fellow BAC members to be time well spent. Our team at NUTC has worked hard to make it a productive and enjoyable experience.

Thank you for your continued support of NUTC programs and research. We sincerely value our association with all of you.

About the Business Advisory Council

Unequaled by any academic transportation advisory board in the country, the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) Business Advisory Council (BAC) has long been a major force behind the Center’s success. The BAC is structured through four distinct levels of membership: Leadership, Sustaining, Individual, and research, education, and outreach initiatives.

All BAC members enjoy access to Northwestern’s world-class faculty, opportunities for networking with industry peers, invitations to and involvement in special programs and events, insights into cutting-edge research and industry trends, discounted tuition fees for the Center’s Executive Education Series, and access to Northwestern’s bright student population and renowned Transportation Library.

The BAC meets twice yearly on the Evanston campus to foster an exchange of ideas among its members and Center faculty, staff, and students. The meetings are designed to explore the areas of interest and relevance to BAC member companies. Each meeting features working sessions, panel discussions, and speaker presentations, as well as opportunities for more informal networking and exchange.
