WELCOME

BAC

We are delighted to welcome you back at Northwestern for the Spring 2023 BAC meeting!

Our Spring BAC meeting is always the highlight and the culmination of our academic year at NUTC. As we approach the end of the Spring quarter, assess successes and accomplishments with our BAC, and gain new insights and directions towards the major research push of the summer. But the main event is the Annual Distinguished Patterson Lecture tied to the Spring BAC meeting, which this year (the 41st) features BAC member Doug Waggoner, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Echo Global Logistics. Doug, a pioneer and innovation leader, will discuss Technology in Transportation and Logistics - Past, Present, and Future. We couldn’t be more excited to hear his take on this very timely topic.

Our meeting takes place in the midst of continuing uncertainty about global and domestic economic conditions, the state of demand for goods and thus for logistics and freight services-- all in an environment rich with technological opportunities and uncertainties. We have called on NU Prof. Sergio Rebelo, a noted understand the factors driving the economy in the foreseeable future. We expect a vigorous conversation on this topic, and additional valuable insight from our BAC members.

Our transportation systems deliver day in and day out, and most people are not aware of the complex operations that make it happen. However, when things go wrong, considerable media attention is directed to the problem and the entire system is questioned. Rail derailments, when they occur, generate considerable attention. We have invited a panel of rail industry representatives, ably moderated by Roger Nober, to help address and place in context questions on overall safety of rail freight operations, derailments, and how best practices and new technologies are converging to minimize their frequency and impact.

Staying with the safety and security theme, not a day goes by without some dire warning about cybersecurity and its potential to cause all kinds of disruptions to our systems, especially with growing connectivity and automaton through all parts of the supply chain. We have invited an eminent global expert who recently mitigate them.

On the good news/bad news side of technological innovation, the explosion of news and opinions about AI and the remarkable accomplishments of ChatGPT and other similar tools have left everyone wondering what these tools could bring to our businesses and what the realistic limits might be to these opportunities. We have again called on Prof. Kristian Hammond, an AI pioneer and entrepreneur, to brief us on the latest developments and what surprises might lie ahead in that realm.

We trust you found value in the Industry Workshop on innovations in last mile delivery held before the reception and dinner preceding Doug Waggoner’s Patterson Lecture.

We take immense pride in the partnership with our BAC companies and the trust they place in our Transportation Center. We truly value the support and counsel we receive from our member companies. We time well spent. Our team at NUTC has worked hard to make it a productive and enjoyable experience.

Thank you for your continued support of NUTC programs and research. We sincerely value our association with all of you.

About the Business Advisory Council

Unequaled by any academic transportation advisory board in the country, the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) Business Advisory Council (BAC) has long been a major force behind the Center’s success. The BAC is structured through four distinct levels of membership: Leadership, Sustaining, Individual, and research, education, and outreach initiatives.

All BAC members enjoy access to Northwestern’s world-class faculty, opportunities for networking with industry peers, invitations to and involvement in special programs and events, insights into cutting-edge research and industry trends, discounted tuition fees for the Center’s Executive Education Series, and access to Northwestern’s bright student population and renowned Transportation Library.

The BAC meets twice yearly on the Evanston campus to foster an exchange of ideas among its members and Center faculty, staff, and students. The meetings are designed to explore the areas of interest and relevance to BAC member companies. Each meeting features working sessions, panel discussions, and speaker presentations, as well as opportunities for more informal networking and exchange.
