In an era where digital information is revolutionizing transportation and logistics, safeguarding data and systems is paramount. To provide further insight, Northwestern University Transportation Center and the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT) will co-host the Spring 2024 Industry Technical Workshop— Cybersecurity Practices in the Transportation and Logistics Industry. Subject matter experts from BNSF Railway, CJ Logistics America, The Port of Los Angeles and project44 will share best practices and strategies to mitigate risks, protect assets, and ensure business continuity from their unique vantage points in the freight industry.

ABOUT CCAT
As part of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) and the University of Michigan, along with its partners, have created the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation
transportation systems with emerging technologies on safety, mobility, cybersecurity, and equity. CCAT serves as the Region 5 University Transportation Center designated vehicles, connected infrastructure, and autonomous vehicles.
U-M’s partners include the University of Akron, Central State University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, Northwestern University, Purdue University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Washtenaw Community College.

Brian Faz, Assistant Vice President of Technology Services. leads a cross functional team responsible for Data & Analytics, AI, Cloud and IT Strategy for BNSF Railway’s Technology Services organization. Brian has 20+ years of experience in industry holding various roles in engiimplementation and process development. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, and a Master of Business Administration from Texas Christian University. His involvement within the community includes Habitat for Humanity, Texas PTA, and both formal and informal mentoring with colleagues past and present.

Bret Johnson is the senior associate director of the Northwestern
University Transportation Center (NUTC), and the director of the Center for the Commercialization of Innovative Transportation Technology at Northwestern. Prior to joining Northwestern, Bret held senior engineering and project management positions at 3COM, Grayhill, Northrop-Grumman, and GE Astrospace. He received an M.A. in Science, Technology and Public Policy from The George Washington University, an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
William A. Patterson Distinguished Chair in Transportation Director, Northwestern University Transportation Center
Hani S. Mahmassani is Director of the Transportation Center, and the William A. Patterson Distinguished Professor in Transportation at Northwestern University, which he joined on September 1, 2007, with joint appointments in the McCormick School of Engineering and the Kellogg School of Management. He previously served in endowed faculty positions at the University of Maryland and at the University of Texas at Austin. Mahmassani has over 35 years of experience as a researcher, scholar and professional in the transportation and logistics area.
Mahmassani is recognized nationally and internationally for a broad ar-
passenger and freight, and he has been especially effective at connecting advanced models to emerging policy issues. He has pioneered the use of novel data sources and real-time data streams in transportation modeling and decision-making, including sensor data from intelligent transportation systems deployments, probe data from GPS and smartphones, transaction records from payment systems, and vehicle-based tracking systems. His current research is focused on autonomous service models.

Sean has 20+ years of combined industry and consulting experience with a background in digital transformation, ERP/CRM business systems, data services & advanced analytics, cloud technology & infrastructure, cybersecurity, and mergers & acquisitions.
Sean was Senior Director of IT, Business Applications at CJ Logistics America from 2014-2017, responsible for application development projects related to business operational systems, for both in-house development activity and third-party applications. Prior to rejoining the company as CIO in 2022, he held positions as Digital Integration Director at RSM US in Raleigh, NC, and, before that, CIO at IMPLUS in Durham, NC.
After starting his career at Accenture as a Senior Consultant specializing in SAP technology and business solutions for clients, Sean held various IT and process improvement leadership roles at Caterpillar Logistics Services, was the Global Manager of Business Systems with Emerson Network Power (now Vertiv) and was Senior Manager Mergers and Acquisitions at West Monroe Partners. He has a BS in Civil Engineering and an MBA from Bradley University.
TranzAct Technologies
Dana Regan is the Senior Vice President of Business Development for TranzAct Technologies and serves on its Advisory Board. In this role, she works with companies to evaluate current supply chain environments and identify improvements to drive bottom line savings, along with developing strategic partnerships to drive growth. This work includes designing and implementing comprehensive solutions to transportation management and procurement, freight audit and payment, and supply chain consulting offerings to help numerous comsupply chain practices. Prior to joining TranzAct, Dana graduated from Villanova University (Go Cats!) and then worked for a startup truckload brokerage in Chicago. Dana joined TranzAct in 2005, initially managing the Capacity & Service Solutions division and then as a National Account Executive before moving into business development and strategy.
SHEEBA VARUGHESEAngeles. Appointed to this position in 2023, she oversees the Port’s Information Technology Division, and is responsible for information technology-driven strategy, modernization, development, and infrastructure at the nation’s busiest container port. With an extensive career in Southern California public sector technology, Varughese has held various positions with the City of Los Angeles Information Technology Agency, Los Angeles World Airports, and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Throughout her career, she has held positions with increasing levels of responsibility, including Communications Engineer, IT Project Manager, Project Portfolio Manager andognized in transportation and public sector associations for leading complex information technology programs. She is known to be highly collaborative with a successful leadership approach in unifying stakeperspectives.
