LETTER

Welcome Welcome back to Northwestern for the Spring 2022 Business Advisory Council (BAC) meeting! We are delighted to welcome you back to Northwestern for the Spring 2022 BAC meeting. In addition to welcoming meeting attendees and sharing some observations about developments at Northwestern, we have invited Dean Julio Ottino to introduce his new book with designer Bruce Mau, “The Nexus: Augmented Thinking for a Complex World--The New Convergence of Art, Technology, and Science” -- a unique contribution that epitomizes McCormick’s philosophy of Whole-Brain Engineering. While some of the highly visible logjams experienced at the west coast ports over the summer and fall appear to have significantly improved, supply chains continue to be a topic of daily concern. With the global turbulence associated with war-related disruptions in the supply of various commodities, adding to inflationary pressures, and returning lockdowns in places like Shanghai, supply chains remain front and center. To help us navigate through this complex situation, we have invited port directors from the East, West, and Gulf coasts to report on trends impacting operations and business expectations for their ports over the near and medium terms. We welcome again BAC members Gene Seroka from the Port of Los Angeles and Steve Rothberg from Mercator International, as well as Brandy Christian from the Port of New Orleans, to share their insights in a panel moderated by Professor Joseph Schofer. To complement the port operators’ perspectives, we will also hear from Professor Sergio Rebelo, distinguished Professor of Finance at the Kellogg School of Management on patterns he sees in the global economy and the current inflationary environment, and how businesses and consumers in the US will likely be impacted. NUTC research through the US DOT Center on Telemobility has been analyzing shopping and telework behavior as society and businesses emerge from the pandemic-induced restrictions. Professor Sunil Chopra of our Kellogg School of Management will share with us some of this team’s fascinating findings on changes in consumer shopping through and beyond the pandemic. Looking toward a more sustainable future, our second panel examines various pathways toward decarbonization in freight transportation including electrification, biofuels, and hydrogen-based fuels. Professor Jennifer Dunn who is also Associate Director of the Center for Engineering Sustainability and Resilience at Northwestern will guide us through the intricacies of alternative fuels and moderate a multimodal industry panel consisting of John Lovenburg (BNSF Railway), Dan McNair (Wabtec), Craig Harper (J.B. Hunt Transport Services), and Jimmy Samartzis (LanzaJet). This BAC Meeting is held in conjunction with the 40th Annual William A. Patterson Distinguished Transportation Lecture, featuring Ed Bastian, CEO of Delta Air Lines. Preceding the Patterson Lecture, we were pleased to welcome a group of experts on revenue management – Rethinking Revenue Management – for the spring 2022 Industry Technical Workshop, an important aspect of the travel and transportation industries as they recover postpandemic.

Hani S. Mahmassani William A. Patterson Distinguished Chair in Transportation Director, Northwestern University Transportation Center

Compelling historic examples illuminate the present, from the Renaissance, when the domains were one, to the twentieth century, with intense, collective creative outpourings from places as different as the Bauhaus and Bell Labs. Leaders must be able to grasp simplicity in complexity and complexity in simplicity—and embrace the powerful idea of complementarity, where opposing extremes coexist and our thinking expands. Innovation needs more than managing. Managers use maps; leaders develop compasses. EXECUTIVE

EDUCATION Freight Transportation & Logistics Navigating Through a Challenging Landscape Over the last couple of years, the global logistics community has managed challenges across the first, middle and final mile. Longstanding constraints were exposed and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Labor, capacity, energy, regulatory, structural and other issues impacted the freight transportation system across every mode and across all geographies. In this essential three-day Executive Education program, Northwestern faculty and industry experts will provide fundamental knowledge and practical insights for managing through these challenges and beyond. NUTC’s Freight Transportation & Logistics three-day Executive Education program has a proven track record of delivering current and forward-looking insight and actionable knowledge into North American/global transportation and supply chains. From domestic transportation (intermodal, parcel and last mile delivery, rail, third-party logistics, trucking, warehousing), to international transportation (air cargo, ocean shipping, ports, sourcing), the program provides an unmatched view into how freight moves. Attendees will get a first-hand look at domestic and international logistics and supply chain trends, and learn how to leverage freight management technology and data analytics for greater efficiency and resilience. This program is specifically designed for early- to mid-level transportation managers, at both carriers and shippers, to deepen their overall knowledge of the freight transportation ecosystem.

About the Business Advisory Council Unequaled by any academic transportation advisory board in the country, the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) Business Advisory Council (BAC) has long been a major force behind the Center’s success. The BAC is structured through four distinct levels of membership: Leadership, Sustaining, Individual, and Association. Each category carries with it a set of membership benefits, as well as a suggested level of commitment and financial support for Transportation Center research, education, and outreach initiatives. All BAC members enjoy access to Northwestern’s world-class faculty, opportunities for networking with industry peers, invitations to and involvement in special programs and events, insights into cutting-edge research and industry trends, discounted tuition fees for the Center’s Executive Education Series, and access to Northwestern’s bright student population and renowned Transportation Library. The BAC meets twice yearly on the Evanston campus to foster an exchange of ideas among its members and Center faculty, staff, and students. The meetings are designed to explore the areas of interest and relevance to BAC member companies. Each meeting features working sessions, panel discussions, and speaker presentations, as well as opportunities for more informal networking and exchange.

About the Transportation Center For the last six decades, the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) has proudly conducted research, provided education and performed outreach for the benefit of the Northwestern community and transportation networks worldwide.
