To provide further insight into the future of air mobility vehicles, systems, and operating models, Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC) and the Center for the Commercialization of Innovative Transportation Technology (CCITT) will host the Fall 2021 Industry Technical Workshop—Advancing Urban Air Mobility.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES ERIC ALLISON Head of Product Joby Aviation Eric Allison serves as Joby Aviation’s Head of Product. He most recently led the Elevate team at Uber, developing software tools that built on more than a decade of experience enabling on-demand mobility. His experience in aerospace research, electric propulsion, energy storage, vehicle autonomy, and composite structures led him to the CEO position at Zee Aero, where he spearheaded the development of Cora, an autonomous air taxi vehicle.

Eric holds a Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford, an MS in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford, and a BS from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

LEE A. CLAIR Managing Partner Transportation and Logistics Advisors, LLC Lee A. Clair is the Managing Partner of Transportation and Logistics Advisors, LLC (TandLA). He specializes in advising clients in all aspects of transportation, logistics, and supply chain management. A recognized expert in the fields of transportation pricing, new product, and service development, costing, and operations, he has assisted clients in rail, trucking, parcel, ocean, barge, and air freight. He also has considerable experience advising suppliers to the transportation industry, including equipment manufacturers and providers of leasing.

Clair has held senior positions at Mercer Management Consulting, Andersen Consulting, and Norbridge, Inc. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and an MBA from the University of Minnesota.

ANDREW CUMMINS Director of Business Development Archer Andrew Cummins is the Director of Business Development at Archer, which is developing an all-electric VTOL aircraft to provide fast, sustainable, safe transportation to people in cities around the world. In his role, Andrew leads the company's Go-to-Market strategy and collaboration with cities to seamlessly integrate Urban Air Mobility operations into communities around the world.

Prior to joining Archer, Andrew held numerous leadership roles in both corporate and start-up environments.

Most recently, he was the Director of Americas at Skyports, where he partnered with cities and aircraft manufacturers to bring UAM landing infrastructure to market. Prior to Skyports, he led Growth Strategy and Business Development teams at Rolls-Royce, ultimately serving as Chief of Staff to the CEO and leading global corporate initiatives.

He earned an MBA and a Master of Global Management from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, and in his free time, he likes to explore the fantastic wine in Napa and Sonoma. He looks forward to taking an Archer aircraft to Napa in the future to skip the traffic!"

EDWARD ESPIRITU Senior Manager | United Airlines Venture and Corporate Development United Airlines Edward Espiritu is a Senior Manager at United Airlines and currently leads the aerospace and aircraft technology vertical for United Airlines Ventures (UAV), has led the group’s transactions in Archer Aviation and Heart Aerospace. The company officially launched UAV in June 2021 as a corporate venture capital fund focusing on opportunities among three main pillars of sustainability, aerospace, and technology. In addition to UAV, Edward is also part of the company’s Corporate Development team, where he led the company’s acquisition of its whollyowned flight training school and worked on its minority investment in Clear Secure, Inc. He has been with United since 2014, starting his career with the airline in Finance, and has supported numerous operational groups and enterprise-wide initiatives before moving into Corporate Development and ultimately UAV.

BRET JOHNSON Sr. Associate Director | Northwestern University Transportation Center Director | Center for the Commercialization of Innovative Transportation Technology Northwestern University Bret Johnson is the senior associate director of the Northwestern University Transportation Center (NUTC), and the director of the Center for the Commercialization of Innovative Transportation Technology at Northwestern.

Prior to joining Northwestern, Bret held senior engineering and project management positions at 3COM, Grayhill, Northrop-Grumman, and GE Astrospace. He received an M.A. in Science, Technology, and Public Policy from George Washington University, an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

HANI MAHMASSANI William A. Patterson Distinguished Chair in Transportation Director | Northwestern University Transportation Center Northwestern University Hani S. Mahmassani is Director of the Transportation Center, and the William A. Patterson Distinguished Professor in Transportation at Northwestern University, which he joined on September 1, 2007, with joint appointments in the McCormick School of Engineering and the Kellogg School of Management. He previously served in endowed faculty positions at the University of Maryland and at the University of Texas at Austin.

Mahmassani has over 35 years of experience as a researcher, scholar, and professional in the transportation and logistics area.

Mahmassani is recognized nationally and internationally for a broad array of transportation research achievements; his applications span both passenger and freight, and he has been especially effective at connecting advanced models to emerging policy issues. He has pioneered the use of novel data sources and real-time data streams in transportation modeling and decision-making, including sensor data from intelligent transportation systems deployments, probe data from GPS and smartphones, transaction records from payment systems, and vehicle-based tracking systems. His current research is focused on autonomous vehicle deployment, including fleet operations for emerging mobility service models.
