TABOR HIRES WARREN AS NEW BASKETBALL COACH

Each spring at Tabor, we all have many things on our minds. Some of us will be graduating and starting new life chapters, others are applying for summer jobs and internships and still others are excited to see family and friends again.

As the school year winds down, it is important to keep the big picture in mind and to reflect on the purpose of our time at Tabor. And if you have trouble nailing down some answers, look no further than the content of this issue.

On March 4, Tabor announced that it would part ways with longtime Head Men’s Basketball Coach Micah Ratzlaff.

In 15 years at Tabor, Ratzlaff achieved an overall record of 228-216, won three KCAC regular season championships, won two KCAC tournament championships and made three trips to the NAIA National Tournament.

Some qualities that Athletic Director Marty Ziesemer was looking for in the next coach include someone who is passionate, hungry and has a plan for developing players in their sport, faith and academics.

Tabor announced on Tuesday, April 12, that Matt Warren would become Ratzlaff’s successor.

Ziesemer highlighted that Warren stood out amongst the candidates with the plan he has and the references that spoke highly of him.

Warren has spent time on the staffs of University of North Florida (NCAA DI), Warner University (NAIA) and other programs before accepting his first college head coaching job with the Bluejays.

“There is a long history of success throughout different eras of Tabor College Men’s Basketball,” Warren said. “We are going to work relentlessly to get back to that standard. We will be meticulous in our preparation, play with relentless effort every time we take the floor, and the results will take care of themselves.”

Personally, I will take with me the life lessons I have learned, the multiple ways in which I have grown and how Tabor has helped me walk closer with Jesus. This is the most important aspect of life, and Tabor is a great place to experience Him. This being my last issue as editor of The View, I thank Dr. Ratzlaff and the writing staff for making this a great experience. I am also happy to announce that Cody Meyer will take over as editor next year!

RETURN OF SAB FORMAL AND JR/SR BANQUET

by Danielle Allison On April 22, Tabor students received an opportunity to take a break from the stress of a closing semester and finals.

The Student Activities Board hosted a formal for all Tabor students to attend. Students were told to “think prom” and dressed up for the evening.

The evening started at 6:45 p.m. when students arrived at Parkview MB Church for dinner catered by Pioneer College Caterers.

During dinner, the students played a fun game of Tabor-themed “Jeopardy!” After dinner, the students traveled a few blocks west to the Marion County fairgrounds, where they enjoyed dancing and each other’s company.

The junior class hosted the Junior/Senior Banquet a

week later, April 29.

Junior class officers Tara Sheets, Caleb Rempel, Reagan Hess, Kierra Shewey and Casle Heger all played key roles in planning the banquet, held at The Historic Elgin Hotel in Marion, Kansas.

“I really enjoyed working with the other junior class officers in planning the Junior/Senior Banquet because everyone brought great ideas to the table,” said Shewey.

“The Junior/Senior Banquet hadn’t been put on in the last couple of years so it was exciting to be a part of the group that started it again.”

Tabor students and staff were thrilled to see these events happen again and for students to get back a more normal college experience after COVID-19.

DECA COMPETES AT NATIONALS

by Destiny Cooper Nationals for Distributive Education Clubs of America took place April 9-12 in Baltimore, Maryland.

The national event included Tabor students Lexi Wall, Sara Yutzy, Ashly Johnson, Jazmin Sandoval, Natalie Ford and Braizejanae Barnes, who were accompanied by adviser Melinda Rangel.

DECA is designed to develop communication, critical thinking, public speaking and problem-solving skills.

Although the club is focused on business, students in any major can benefit from joining DECA. Highlights from DECA include Ford, Sandoval and Johnson making finals in each of their events. This later resulted in Ford and Sandoval receiving Top 10 finishes in finals.

Ford would go on to make the Top 10 in the sales challenge final. Ford and Sandoval received medals for being Top 10 in the written exam portion of their event.

The trip was not all business, however, as they toured Washington, D.C., saw historical monuments and attended a Baltimore Orioles baseball game.

“DECA will be offered in the spring semester of next year,” Rangel said. “I encourage anyone, regardless of their major, looking to enhance their resume and compete at the state and local level to consider enrolling in DECA.”

REFLECTING THROUGH RETIREMENT: DR. RATZLAFF’S TIME AT TABOR

by Shea Sutherland The impact of a teacher or mentor can have lasting effects on students, and Dr. Aleen Ratzlaff has been a positive testament to this.

“I feel energized in the classroom,” said Ratzlaff, professor of communications at Tabor. “It is lifegiving to be able to interact and see those who catch the vision about what it means to communicate.”

Ratzlaff has shown the value of communication through her achievements, roles, time in the classroom and the inspiration she has provided to current and former students.

Graduating in 1974 only marked the beginning of Ratzlaff’s journey at Tabor. She officially returned in 2000 after completing her doctorate from the University of Florida.

Upon returning, she transitioned through varying ranks before becoming professor of communications.

Ratzlaff said she returned to Tabor because of her family roots, the mission statement of the college and the colleagues who surrounded her.

“Tabor College has given me the autonomy to be able to shape the classes and teach the materials that I think are important,” she said. “I have been able to reflect who I am.”

The classroom is not the only location where Ratzlaff has served throughout the years. She has held multiple positions including department chair, faculty chair, MSU adviser, faculty representative to the board, TC 101 adviser, The Tabor View adviser and a member of the assessment committee.

“I met with Dr. Johnson two years ago to talk to him about making this transition,” said Ratzlaff. “I wanted

to have a smooth transition for students, for Tabor and for me.”

The service that she has put forth at Tabor has awarded her the Clarence R. Hiebert Excellence in Teaching Award in 2005 and has given her the opportunity to present the Dr. Richard Kyle Faculty Lecture in both 2010 and 2021.

Although Ratzlaff plans to retire from full-time faculty, her work at Tabor will not come to an end. She will continue to serve next school year by instructing a few classes, advising The Tabor View and meeting with communication majors.

ALLEN SERVES TABOR FOR 20 YEARS

by Sam Buller This year marks the end of Vice President Rusty Allen’s time at Tabor.

After first joining the Tabor faculty in the summer of 2001, he has served in numerous leadership roles.

He served as Head Women’s Basketball Coach for six years, Vice President of Athletics for three years, Dean of Enrollment Management for three years and Acting President for three months when Tabor needed him.

Allen felt drawn to Tabor because of his experience with the college in the KCAC, both as a player and a coach.

“I was confident then and remain confident that God called me to serve Tabor’s mission all these years,” Allen said.

As one may expect, serving in different positions at Tabor allowed Allen to connect with a wide range of students.

It is these connections and memories that he looks back on as his most cherished moments while serving.

“I have cried, laughed, prayed with, dug into the scripture with and just had great conversations with more students than I could possibly count,” Allen said.

In his time here, he has also witnessed students come to know Christ. He will not soon forget the growth that he witnessed in students.

As Tabor prepares to say goodbye to Allen, he emphasizes that he is leaving behind talented and hardworking faculty and staff who will continue to do God’s work. He knows that they will continue building relationships and ministering to new students just as he did.

“We have some godly and talented people serving our students,” Allen said. “The Tabor employee base is amazing, and they have blessed me in profound ways.”

TABOR BEGINS NEW MASTER’S PROGRAM

by Tyler Seeley Beginning in June 2023, Tabor will introduce a MBA in Global Sports Management & Leadership. The new program will follow the Master of Education timeline, which starts in June and takes 15 months to complete.

This new program will take six of the core MBA of Sport Management classes and replace them with six that are in its field.

Amy Ratzlaff, associate dean of the school of professional studies, said she felt an immediate need to add both the MBA in Sports Management and the MBA in Global Sports Management & Leadership because of the impact COVID-19 had on eligibility.

“I’ve been advising students that are seniors in the

classroom and sophomores on the field,” said Ratzlaff.

This program will provide an opportunity to serve the community through global and statewide service trips providing multisport camps and clinics.

“There is not a community in the world that does not beg for some type of sports instruction,” said Ratzlaff.

“Kids love to play. Every community has them.”

God has blessed Tabor with athletes–a majority of the student body–and has asked Tabor to develop it.

“There is a population here that I think would use this master’s right away,” said Ratzlaff. “I think we are underusing something that we already have a passion for.”

FINISHING THE TABOR RACE

by Ethan Barnes Tabor College has a deep history, filled with great achievements and people through its time. Toby Penner has certainly added to this history during his time at Tabor.

Penner has been an important part of Tabor track and field. Since coming in as a freshman, he has competed in four different NAIA Championships.

“Toby is a lot stronger physically because of his work in the weight room, which was new for him when he came to Tabor,” said Head Coach Dave Kroeker. “He has never missed a workout since he has been at Tabor because of an injury.”

Despite graduating this spring, Penner still has one year of eligibility left because of COVID-19. He intends to use it.

“I will be going to graduate school at Wichita State, (and) also running track there for one year,” said Penner. “At the time, I was frustrated with COVID-19 interrupting our seasons, but now it has turned into a huge blessing.”

Wichita State is a NCAA DI program, the highest collegiate level possible. Knowing it will be difficult, Penner is more than ready for the challenge.

“At that level, everyone is performing at a high level all of the time,” he said. “Just that competitive environment–I am so looking forward to it. (It’s) just a dream come true.”

At Wichita State, he will be studying for his master’s of communication, focusing on journalism. “(Dr.) Aleen (Ratzlaff) went there as a student, and it has a long history of being effective in getting students out in the workforce,” said Penner.

He said his dream is to become a journalist for a Christian publication, where he can write and share stories about different people. He wants to share their involvement in church and ministry with the world.

SPORTS UPDATES

SOFTBALL

by Cody Meyer The Tabor softball team has been on fire lately, winning 11 of 12 games, including an eight-game win streak, before losing two close games against RV Ottawa, by scores of 2-3 and 6-7.

The Ottawa series was the last for the Bluejays in the regular season, in which they will finish with an overall record of 19-23 and place sixth in the KCAC with a conference record of 15-9.

The Bluejays have both hit and pitched well during the month of April. At the plate, they are hitting 0.336 and have scored 121 runs. On the mound, Tabor pitchers have a combined 3.47 ERA, only allowing 56 runs to score.

The Bluejays will look to carry this momentum into the conference tournament as they prepare to play Friends May 6 in Round 1.

GOLF

by Gracie Trogdon The Tabor men’s and women’s golf seasons came to a sweet ending, only losing two graduating seniors.

Oscar Saldivar and Logan Mathews ended their golfing career at Tabor with the best conference performance in all four years as Bluejays.

Though there were winds up to 35 mph with gusts over 50 mph, the Tabor men’s team pushed through for an amazing performance.

The Tabor women’s team saw much improvement over the spring season. Junior Valdisa Andov placed third in the KCAC Championships in Lawrence, Kan. The women’s team strives to improve their skills for next season.

“I’m so proud of how our spring season has turned out, and I’m looking forward to the future,” said Head Coach Mike Jamieson. “Both teams have improved so much over this spring season.”

TRACK UPDATE

With the season nearly ending, the Tabor track teams are looking for a strong finish at the conference meet.

On the men’s side, three school records have gone down in April. Caden Cunningham broke the 5K record with a time of 15 minutes, 8.61 seconds, Tyke Owens broke the 100-meter record with a time of 10.50 seconds, and Dashaun Sanford, Ontario Jones, Ali Cannon and Owens broke the 4x100 relay record with a time of 41.60 seconds.

The women’s side has had a very strong second half of the season.

Switching over from the basketball court, Jordyn Lowrie has made a big impact, joining the 4x400 relay team and qualifying for nationals in the high jump.

On May 5-6, the track team will compete at the conference meet in Winfield, Kan. Following the conference meet, national qualifiers will travel to Gulf Shores, Ala., to compete in the NAIA Championships.

TENNIS

by Danielle Allison The women’s tennis team had a record of 7-2 in conference during the regular season. Wins against Kansas Wesleyan, Bethel, Friends, Sterling and Bethany during April contributed to the 7-2 record.

These efforts earned them home advantage for the first round of the KCAC tournament against Bethel on April 27, winning by a score of 4-0. In the second round, facing off against KCAC regular season champion Southwestern, they lost 1-4, ending their season.

The women’s team had three athletes earn AllConference recognition. Senior Oliva Burbacher earned second team while sophomore Geanna Richard and senior Liliana Wait both earned honorable mention.

The men’s tennis team finished 4-5 in conference play. They lost 2-4 in a close match against Kansas Wesleyan in the conference tournament to end their season.

The men’s team had two athletes earn AllConference recognition. Freshman Noe Hauschildt earned second team and junior Mateo Garcia was honorable mention.

BASEBALL

by Tyler Seeley The Tabor baseball team wrapped up conference play with Senior Day at home on April 29 and 30 against Kansas Wesleyan.

The Bluejays finish the regular season with a 3415-1 overall record, and 22-11 record in the KCAC. After being swept by Ottawa and Kansas Wesleyan, the Bluejays finished conference play in third place behind Ottawa and McPherson.

Tabor stays steady at 22nd in the NAIA Top-25 behind conference foes Ottawa (13) and McPherson (17).

Tabor leads the nation in home runs with 107 and runs batted in with 467 and ranks top 10 in many other offensive categories.

Tabor will play in the conference tournament on May 6-9 in Great Bend, Kansas. and hope to continue to the NAIA national tournament opening round May 16-19.

DR. VANDERHOOF’S TIME AT TABOR

by Destiny Cooper Dr. Lara Vanderhoof’s time at Tabor has been a blessing and an amazing experience for her over the years. She has had the opportunity to minister to students, faculty and staff and create lasting memories.

Vanderhoof said she has gained so much insight and experience that she will cherish for a lifetime. The study abroad trips, field trips, lectures and serving as the Social Justice Club adviser have provided Vanderhoof with unique opportunities.

Vanderhoof has received awards and achievements to commemorate her service at Tabor, including the Clarence R. Hiebert Excellence in Training Award in 2018 and Who’s Who in Social Sciences Education in 2018. She is also a Kansas State Supreme Court Approved Mediator.

She has also contributed, edited and reviewed content for various publications and journals, and she has guided Tabor’s Societal Challenge and Social Work program.

What Vanderhoof said she will take away most from Tabor is the attitude of servant leadership, the importance of listening intently, and the perspective of the student’s voice, along with holistically caring for students while providing a well-rounded Christian liberal arts education.

As Vanderhoof transitions into a new journey, she hopes to never forget the importance of building relationships.

“Spending time with students has yielded great joy in seeing these young adults become excited about serving Jesus in the world,” she said.

As Vanderhoof closes her time at Tabor, she will teach in Tabor’s Master of Education program this summer before transitioning to Central Christian College in McPherson, Kansas, as Chief of Academics Officer.

CHUMS MAKES POST-COVID COMEBACK

by Millie Sechrist Part of the mission for CHUMS is to make a difference in the lives of elementary school students by showing them Christ’s love through mentoring relationships.

CHUMS gives Tabor students the opportunity to work with a Hillsboro Elementary student semiweekly.

CHUMS has been happening for more than 25 years but had to pause the past two years because of COVID-19 restrictions.

“The elementary students get the mentoring and the tutoring, but for the Tabor students, it is helping them give back to the community,” said Sara Sigley, staff adviser and former CHUMS mentor.

Being a CHUMS mentor has been a special experience for senior Rolanda Reed, and she was excited for its return after COVID-19.

“I gained a sense of community,” Reed said. “Tabor is a community, but CHUMS extends that community

to the elementary school kids.”

Reed said she is thankful for the support she had as an elementary school student, so she sees the importance of supporting these elementary students who need extra support.

“For both students that I have worked with, they were very hesitant and did not have a lot of confidence,” said Reed. “It was so memorable helping them build that confidence.”

CHUMS is a great way for Tabor students to serve the community and get connected with young students.

Sigley said, “The kids benefit both socially and academically. They have someone who is there to help them to be a positive role model for them.”

SENIOR SPOTLIGHTS 10

Josh Gaede is a legacy Tabor student who heard about Tabor from his parents. Their encouragement and his qualification for the PLP Fellows Scholarship is what brought him to Tabor.

Over his four years at Tabor, he has done cross country, tennis and theater; been an RA; taken piano lessons; and been involved in AED club. He is triple majoring in biomedicine, biology and psychology.

As he prepares to move on from Tabor, he found that the relationships with faculty members and fellow students that he built here are some of his best experiences from college.

Josh plans to take a gap year after college working as a medical assistant, after which he will move on to more schooling to become a doctor of osteopathic medicine. He eventually plans to become a family physician for a rural town.

Will Boney is from Frisco, Texas, and was recruited to play soccer at Tabor, but he did not realize the impact that Tabor would have on him.

As a business administration major with a communications minor, Boney arrived at Tabor looking forward to building relationships with people both inside and outside of his sport.

He soon got involved on campus in activities including DECA, CHUMS and Student Senate, as well as being an RA and senior class president.

In the classroom, Boney worked his way onto the dean’s list multiple times. On the field, he played an integral role in the soccer team’s turnaround, as they went from 2-13-1 in 2020 to 12-8-1 in 2021, finishing second in the KCAC and qualifying for the NAIA national tournament.

“Outside of soccer, the overall experience with the community here has been amazing,” Boney said.

After graduation, Boney plans to either move to Oklahoma City, Okla., or Nashville, Tenn., and pursue a career in marketing or sales.

Taylor Burns has been a light on Tabor’s campus since she arrived in the fall of 2020. She came to Tabor on a volleyball scholarship, but she instantly got involved with other activities including SOCA and athletic training.

She is majoring in health and human performance with an emphasis in strength and conditioning. Burns earned third team All-Conference both seasons as a Bluejay and has made the dean’s list three semesters in a row.

“Since coming to Tabor, I have learned to let go of the things I cannot control and let life take me down the path that I am supposed to go,” said Burns.

She has received a job as the assistant volleyball coach at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. Burns, who graduated from Northeastern before coming to Tabor, said she is excited to return back to the program.

Although the chance to play volleyball brought senior Haylee Barta to Tabor, she is graduating with so much more.

Barta said she felt it was easy to connect with people as soon as she got on campus because of her team, but she has also made many friends outside of her team.

A highlight of her time at Tabor has been meeting with her mentor, Amy Ratzlaff, and committing her life to Christ during their time together.

Barta has accepted a job teaching elementary school in Syracuse, Kan., that she will begin in the fall of 2022.

“I grew a lot in my time here,” said Barta. “I learned that I can have my own relationship with God, and it doesn’t have to look like everybody else’s.”

Each year, Tabor graduates stupendous students, with this year being no different.

Kole Long, a member of the football team at Tabor, is one of many that will go on to achieve great things.

Long is double majoring in bio-med and bio-chem, along with a minor in mathematics. He will attend the University of Oklahoma next fall as a member of their bio-med doctorate program.

“My plan is to focus on the research aspect, possibly with the military, or work for a government lab,” Long said.

Long came to Tabor from Mulvane, Kan., roughly an hour away from Tabor. At Tabor, he has grown and made many memories along the way.

“My time at Tabor has been good,” Long said. “I spent a lot of time with football and school doing a double major and a minor, so I didn’t have much free time but I spent it all with friends.”

Abigail Sechrist is a double major in psychology and ministry with minors in social work and Bible, in addition to being on the track and cross country teams.

She received the Hiebert Student of The Year award in her sophomore year and was Tabor’s female Champion of Character as a junior.

Last year, Sechrist was a NAIA national qualifier in cross country and earned AllConference in the steeplechase. This year, she made All-Conference in the indoor 5K run.

Her goal is to serve as a mentor or counselor for young girls, specifically those in the foster-care system.

At Tabor, Sechrist said the most important thing she gained was the experience of living in a community.

“At Tabor, I really learned how to live in community, the importance of having adult relationships and not avoiding conflict but working through it,” Sechrist said.

“Send me” from Isaiah 6:8 were the two words Laney Swink needed to hear to come to Tabor. Swink, a senior from Fort Gibson, Okla., will graduate in May with a double major in exercise science and psychology and a minor in biology.

During her time at Tabor, she has enjoyed being a part of the women’s basketball team, creating lifelong friendships, and building a stronger relationship with Christ.

“If I wouldn’t (have) come here, I wouldn’t be (as) close with my relationship with Him than where I am now,” said Swink.

Prof. Jim Paulus and Sheryl Richert are two of the personnel at Tabor who have helped shape the person she is today, both academically and spiritually.

After graduation, Swink will pursue graduate school at Langston University for a degree in physical therapy.

Sarah Paulus and Justin Burman Sarah and Justin met in September 2020.

They were set up by two of their friends while Sarah was a senior in high school, and Justin was a freshman at Tabor. They were engaged March 19, and their wedding is set for July 23.

Iris Klein and Caleb Rempel Iris and Caleb met at Hillsboro High School when she was a freshman, and he was a junior. They got engaged at the Marion Reservoir Feb. 10 and are having a backyard celebration wedding Aug. 6.

Alysson Foos and Dakotah Whiteley Alysson and Dakotah met while competing for Tabor College’s Presidential Leadership Scholarship in 2019. They were engaged July 3, 2021, and will be married Aug. 6.

Shea Sutherland and Jackson Rohr Shea and Jackson met at their church’s high school youth group in 2015 when she was a freshman, and he was a junior. They got engaged Dec. 26, 2021, and plan to be married May 26, 2023.

Emma Willison and Cole Gilbert Emma and Cole met in the summer of 2016 at high school cross country practice. They were engaged June 19, 2021, and will be married Jan. 14, 2023.

Taylor Quiring and Cameron Landon Taylor and Cameron met at Tabor College through mutual friends. Their engagement proposal was Nov. 7, 2021. They will be married July 30.

Zoe Shieldnight and Devin Rust Zoe and Devin met during her first year at Tabor when she was a sophomore. They got engaged May 29, 2021, and plan to be married June 5.

Chazni (Ptacek) Barker and Quade Scott Chazni and Quade met during high school in Eureka, Kan. They were engaged Oct. 24, 2021. The couple has yet to set a wedding date.

Brittany Hiebert and Axton Travis Brittany and Axton met in the fall of 2019 at Tabor. They got engaged Aug. 29, 2021, and will be married June 3, 2023.

Taylor Morrow and Colton Roundtree Taylor and Colton met as freshmen in Intercultural Communication class at Tabor in 2018. They got engaged April 3 at Lakeside Park in McPherson, Kan. They plan to marry in summer 2023.

Abby Berggren and Joshua Gaede Abby and Josh met as high school seniors through the Presidential Leadership Program competition in 2018. They got engaged Oct. 10, 2021, and will be married May 28.

KRUCKENBERG FILLS MULTIPLE ROLES AT TABOR

by Kylie Davis Erica Kruckenberg, affectionately known as “Mama K,” wears many hats at Tabor.

As director of Student Success and self-proclaimed “herder of cats,” Kruckenberg oversees a myriad of responsibilities, including freshman orientation, tutoring, advising, academic accommodations and academic probation.

“My favorite part of the job is getting to know my students, and having my students teach me what the old lady doesn’t know, which could be anything from new vocabulary to music that I otherwise wouldn’t have listened to,” she said. “My students teach me in return and I really enjoy that.”

Before coming to Tabor, Kruckenberg earned a degree in international business and global studies from Bethany College. She then served in the Peace Corp, bought and sold Pizza Hut franchises, and ran the business side of a missile manufacturing company.

Then, Kruckenberg tragically lost her father.

“That made me stop and take inventory of life, and I wanted to do something to give back,” she said.

After completing an alternative certification, she taught kindergarten through second grade and earned her master’s in Higher Education Leadership at Texas A&M to become a high school principal in Texas.

She and her family returned to Lindsborg, Kansas, where she taught business and served as alumni director at Bethany. After working as a caseworker for Kansas Mental Health and a 911 dispatcher, she decided

to return to education and Tabor hired her.

“I really am a poster child for why a liberal arts education is so important,” Kruckenberg said.

“Bethany has a liberal arts program similar to Tabor’s, and without that exposure to those different classes, I couldn’t have done all the things I did.”

Kruckenberg also teaches elementary statistics and macroeconomics at Tabor, along with a math class in the Elevate program.

“I am a complete nerd, and I love statistics,” she said.

“I take a different approach to statistics than normal math professors because I just want to make sure (students) understand every piece of it.”

‘SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2’ REVIEW

by Sam Buller April 7 saw the release of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” a movie based on the video game series of the same name.

Returning cast includes Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic, James Marsden as Officer Tom Wachowski, and comedy legend Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik.

Joining the cast is Colleen O’Shaughnessey voicing Tails the fox and Idris Elba voicing Knuckles the echidna.

The film is packed full of references to the video game that longtime fans will definitely notice and enjoy. However, for those who are not familiar with the games, the story is likewise enjoyable and there are many cases where anyone watching can have a good laugh.

The story itself focuses on Sonic finding out what

it means to be a hero and having friends to help him on the way. Combine that with amazing visuals, intense fight scenes and an amazing reveal in the final act, this movie checks all the boxes.

It is obvious that both the cast and directors worked hard to make it an enjoyable time. If that is not enough reason to go see this film, it earned the highest grossing opening weekend for a video game movie.

And for those who like teasers, a post credit scene sets up the third film to be even bigger than this one.

I would highly recommend anyone to watch this movie as it appeals both to longtime fans of the franchise and newcomers who are looking for a fun movie to watch with friends or family.

‘THE NORTHMAN’ REVIEW

by David Wiens With “The Northman,” it seems that director Robert Eggers has stuck with the mantra “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” This director has made a name for himself with period-piece horror films, and his latest mostly follows in the same vein.

However, “The Northman” is exceptional as a story focused far less on horror, with Eggers instead opting to tell a more approachable story that would be familiar to a mainstream audience.

To put it simply, this film is a retelling of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” with the trademark historicity for which Eggers’ films are known. It is

a straightforward tale of revenge in 10th century Iceland but delves into the alien culture of that time.

In particular, this film places a heavy emphasis on religion and psychedelic drugs to make this one of the most visually interesting films in recent memory. It also helps that the story’s setting makes ample room for beautiful landscape shots.

The most impressive aspect of the film, however, is the cast of talented actors who make the whole film work. Alexander Skarsgard and Anya TaylorJoy are compelling as lead characters, but even the bit parts are acted just as well.
