Employee Spot Light
The purpose of an employee spotlight is to celebrate the great staff at Lower Shore America Job Center and showcase firsthand stories about our workplace. This month, we would like to introduce an employee, Juleanna Willis, employed with Wicomico Health Department within the American Job Center. Read her inspiring story here!
1.What do you like most about the work you do here?
I love interacting with customers. I am a people person who loves to talk, so this position fits me very well.
2. What is the most exciting/interesting/challenging project you’ve worked on here?
One interesting project that I have done is customer satisfaction surveys. I engaged my limited English-speaking customers so that they feel like they have a voice and that their opinion is needed and wanted.
3. How long have you been with the Wicomico County Health Department?
I started working for the health department on January 26th, which was my birthday. Despite not usually working that day, I'm glad I did because my colleagues celebrated with me. Although technically a health department employee, I'm part of the DHS (DSS) team and am accepted and appreciated by everyone. The AJC staff, particularly those I interact with regularly, like Mrs. Tammy, Ms. Patti, and Jo, are amicable and welcoming, which makes my workdays more pleasant.
How did you get started in the industry?
I stumbled into my current career by accident. Initially, I aimed to work as a social worker in a school setting. However, my interest was piqued after taking Dr. M's Chemical Dependency course at Wor-Wic. I was captivated by the subject matter (I was hooked).
5. What drew you to apply for this position and why?
I had worked with Ms. Duncan, who was my predecessor, at my former job, and I had a good experience with servicing the referrals we would get, and it seemed like an ideal position. Once the work became available, I was encouraged to apply. I was nervous because I was eight months pregnant by the time I did my interview, so I was unsure if they would hold a position long enough for me to have my baby and then start work. Thankfully they offered me the job, and I could begin after my maternity leave.
6.What do you enjoy most about working with your customers within the American Job Center?
I enjoy hearing other people's stories, especially those new to this country. We all go through different struggles, and sometimes the customers I see need someone to truly listen and encourage them to hold their heads high and keep moving forward.
7. What is one that you wish people knew about your job?
I wish people knew how rewarding working in this field can be. There is a considerable stigma attached to substance use and mental health which is probably why it is hard for many to ask for help. I want people to know that there is help out there and there are people who genuinely care and are willing to help.
8. What was your dream job as a kid?
When my family and I moved here from Baltimore (Go-Os), I was not used to thunderstorms, so every time there was one, I was convinced that a tornado would come; it inspired me to want to be a meteorologist.

Just look at the self-help department of any bookstore; the number of books on time management is a sign that you don't want to enter adulthood without acquiring this skill.
Time management means deciding what should be accomplished in a day and learning how to juggle those things to make it happen. This means prioritizing, planning, and deciding how much you can realistically accomplish. The best way to develop this skill is through practice; if you have loads of free time, you'll likely not have to flex your time-management muscles.
What Are the Top 5 Benefits of a Summer Job Besides Pay?
While a part-time job at a burger joint may not give you a ton of relevant experience for your resume, it will give you the experience to document. Historically, teenage unemployment rates increase in June and decline in August, which may be attributed to planned vacations. However, the summer months away from school provide an opportunity to secure employment and gain working experience. When it's time to apply for other jobs, you don't want to be the one with an empty resume. And if parttime jobs are scarce or if you can't land one, you can still work on padding your resume by volunteering.
Getting to Know You
Not sure about your future career? Don't worry; most change their minds many times before settling on their long-term career. Getting out into the workforce as a barista at your local coffee shop may not help you see what it will be like as a doctor, but you will find out whether you like to work with people and whether you can work quickly and efficiently under pressure. You also might discover new things about yourself. For instance, you may find that you like working with numbers. Reading about the skills you will need to get a future job is not the same as testing your mettle in the real world. If you're wondering what skills you have, working a couple of part-time summer jobs should help you zero in on your likes and dislikes, evaluate your strengths, and resolve your weaknesses.
Broaden Your Circle
Chances are, your social circle is comprised of people in your age group. However, in a job, you are likely to work with a diverse group of people, from all backgrounds and of all ages. Not only can you learn from the varying perspectives and experiences of others, but you can also forge friendships, learn about new opportunities, acquire desirable skills, and increase your visibility. Adult Education
You can improve your reading, writing, and math skills, or even learn English, prepare for GED® tests, and increase your chances of getting a job or advancing in your career by enrolling in classes. These classes are available to anyone over 18 who is not currently enrolled in high school.

For some children, summer break can mean limited access to healthy meals, medical attention, a structured and supervised environment, and other resources that foster well-being. Parents without resources for child care may lose income due to working limited hours or feel forced to leave children at home unattended.
This is why we're SO EXCITED to announce that GOLD was awarded a three-year grant of $30,000 a year to provide scholarships for local children to attend summer camps! Thank you so much to The Donnie Williams Foundation for the award and for their commitment to ensuring that all children have access to the positive outcomes that these programs provide.
Salisbury, MD- The Lower Shore Workforce Alliance Business Services department is please to announce a Free Forklift certification class. The class is scheduled to take place June 21st, 2023 from 8 AM to Noon, at the Safety Resource building in North Salisbury. The department plans to have at least 15 participants who will be OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) certified Forklift operator upon completion of the class. Applications will be accepted online from May 15- June 12th, 2023. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the class. Life without a car can be difficult at best and unmanageable at worst. For low-income families across Maryland, especially recipients of funds from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, transportation may be a significant hurdle in finding gainful employment and moving toward financial independence. Through a network of partners across the state, TAP provides reliable used vehicles that will serve eligible low-income families for two years or 24,000 miles, often leading to the dramatic improvements. THE TWO WORDS THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE MINDSET (FOR BETTER OR WORST)

In your most difficult times, how do you define yourself? When I ask my clients this question, I sometimes receive responses like, “I am a procrastinator. I am lazy. I am overwhelmed. I am lost. I am not good enough.”
I am.” Two common, yet powerful words often the prelude to a psychologically harmful comment. Followed by a word that describes a negative behavior, they indicate that our actions actually define who we are. People often use these words to label themselves in a way that doesn’t serve them well ironically, voicing and believing these falsehoods only brings more of what you don’t want into your world. They can even lead to situational depression and to more of the behavioral patterns that contribute to the cause of the negative situation in the first place. Using this type of self-
reproving language embeds the belief that you are your behavior, rather than someone who is not behaving in a desirable way. Once that belief is embedded in your psychological blueprint for living, irrational thinking is difficult to overcome. Indeed, what we carry to be true in our own minds is our only reality.
A negative thought is simply that: a thought. In no way does it mean that it’s the truth. Unfortunately, like riding a bicycle downhill, these thoughts easily gain momentum. Even thinking of yourself as a procrastinator will increase the likelihood of your delaying things. Instead, recognize that what you are procrastinating on is probably a tedious, frustrating, or ambiguous task. You can change your behavior
by first recognizing that it’s a task you don’t like doing, or that you are unclear about. Putting distance between yourself and a negative definition of yourself allows your mind to create clarity and get the task done.
Switching your thoughts and language to recognize limiting beliefs and actions as behaviors, rather than thinking of them as who you are, empowers to overcome the problem. Take back your power. Rather than “I am sad,” try “I am feeling sad in this moment.” The addition of the word “feeling” differentiates it from an identity. And “in this moment” tells your brain the behavior is not permanent. It gives you permission to look at the behavior, accept it, and explore options to move into a healthier mindset. This simple awareness alone can be life-changing.Each day you’ll move closer and closer toward actions that resemble success. Save the “I am” for the positive qualities within you. If it’s difficult for you to buy into the more robust claims, begin with something simple: I am giving. Or, I am loving. Each day, or as often as possible, step up a rung on your ladder of emotional descriptors. Now, repeat after me: “I am brilliant!”
