ustly named the "heartbreak of psoriasis," psoriasis affects

7 million adults in the US. Named after an ancient Greek word meaning an itchy or scaly condition, it is an immunemediated inflammatory disease of the skin. There are various triggers including stress, injury to the skin, medications, infection and the ever-changing weather in Central New York!

Caused by increased activity of the immune system, which causes redness, scale, and sometimes itch, it commonly appears on the scalp, elbows and knees.

It has become increasingly important to treat psoriasis because although it was once thought of as a skin disease that sometimes affected the joints, we now know it can affect other organs in our body causing heart disease, diabetes, obesity, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's and ulcerative colitis, and even depression.

Like many diseases, living with psoriasis has its unique challenges. Today, there are many new and effective treatments including topical medications such as steroids and vitamin D containing creams.

Some cases may need a systemic treatment such as light therapy or oral medications (adding a fish oil supplement has shown to be helpful). In Central New York, Dermatology Associates of Ithaca has one of the few Ultraviolet B phototherapy booths. For those with widespread psoriasis, injected biologic medications may be a more convenient and effective option than topical medications or light therapy.

Aside from medical treatments, exercise and good lifestyle choices will always be important. Taking steps to reduce stress and eating a well balanced diet can help to keep the skin healthy for everyone!

Dr. Josephine C. McAllister is a board-certified, Harvard trained dermatologist who has selectively chosen and mentored her team of five Physician Assistants with a mission to make dermatologic care more accessible to patients. Ice Fest is an annual tradition in Downtown Ithaca! What holiday season would be complete without a celebration of cold weather and cold weather sports... like Ice Carving! Witness the nation’s finest ice carvers as they compete for $9,000 in prizes during 3 rounds of breathtaking competition in Downtown Ithaca.

The festival features impressive display sculptures, fire demonstrations, the ever-popular Ice Bar: an outdoor bar made entirely of ice, serving beer, wine, and hot cocoa, and a tasty Chowder Cook-off. Ithaca Ice Festival ice carving competition is a National Ice Carving Association sanctioned event. Tickets - 10 Tickets for $10. he

aleb aka peanut is a wonderful 2 year old boy who brings

many smiles to us all. He has a rare condition called chiari 1.5 malformation. It’s an advanced form of chiari 1 malformation. His cerebellum and brain stem are herniated through the foremen magnum (opening at the base of the skull) he has to have sub occipital decompression with duraplasty and c1 laminectomy surgery. What they are doing taking a piece of his skull off opening his dura and putting in a dura patch and shaving down a part of his c1 vertebrae, so they can relieve the pressure on his brain. Peanut is going to a specialist in NYC to have his surgery and will have to stay for a week. As much as We hate asking for help We have tried everything and with my husband out of work for his own medical problems we have to swallow our pride and ask for help. Even if you can’t donate if you could send Kaleb positive thoughts on January 2, 2018 (day of surgery).

CALENDAR December 6 – Job Corps Orientation & Interviews for 16-24 Year Olds 11:30am at Cortland Works Career Center, 99 Main St., Cortland, NY 13045. Job Corps, administered by the U.S. Dept. of Labor, offers free career technical training for 16 – 24 year olds in auto mechanics, auto body repair, medical & business office, C.N.A., L.P.N, construction, culinary arts, security guard and more. The program includes up to two years education and training, campus housing, meals and other services. There is no cost to eligible students.

Both high school graduates and non-graduates may apply. If needed, a student can also get a NY State High School Equivalency (TASC) or high school diploma at the same time they train for a career at Job Corps.
