Good design makes you feel something positive - like there is something in it for you.

Good design should be accessible to ever yone. So, I chuckle a little when I hear someone say interior design is surface stuff for the rich, a frivoliity that is only skin deep. Yet, I’ve seen the beauty of interior design transform attitudes, make people feel worthy and even move an alcoholic to rehab .

I am an interior designer who wants to be part of a team of change agents who welcome the challenges of practicing this craft in a manner that will serve all people with an approach to design dilemmas that embraces curiosity instead of prescription.

My goal is to contribute to spaces that are equally beautiful, functional and most importantly - make the client feel heard.

LOUNGE C Like nature, our homes have the ability to replenish us. Lounge C is a home away from home for COMMONWEALTH residents. It’s where they can get out of their apartments and get to know their neighbors beneath the canopy of the symbolic River Birch - a resilent tree common to the area.

In a nod to the first city residents to take part in this experience, the names of each inaugural tenant is engraved on the wooden River Birch leaves cut from the layered canopy and attached to the tree trunk.

Lounge C lives at the building’s south-eastern end and takes advantage of the year-round sun exposure, utilizing daylighting as an energy- and cost-saving strategy. Natual light extends to the patio which shares a window-embedded wall with the community room.

This feature allows the community room to benefit from the south-eastern exposure and daylighting as the patio’s venestration mirrors Lounge C’s on its southern wall.

THE RESILIENCY GARDEN Some gardens can flourish without much care, but like people, they fare better with support.

The Resiliency Garden is designed to stimulate community interaction. Accessible by stairwells and an elevator that opens directly into the space, the Resiliency Garden offers 360-degree views of downtown Trenton. As a nod to the environment, the space contributes to improving air quality with planted trees acompanied by perennial flowers. Vegetable gardens planted by residents allows tenants to grow their own food. Additionally, as roof-top gardens are rare in Trenton, this project takes advantage of city incentives offered to builders creating roof gardens.

The RESILENCY GARDEN is an peaceful outdoor space for the Commonwealth residents and their guests. It provides ample seating as well as open space. Wood composite floors, walls and pergolas combined with plant material - real and faux contribute to a space that balances aesthetics with practical considersations such as the weight of the roof, exposure to the elements and maintenance.

The custom-built planters serve as raised vegetable gardens inclusively designed to accommodate a variety of heights and physical capabilities. Each planter contains a drainage system that empties into a drain embedded into the sloped floor and is connected to a pipe that carries the water to a retention barrel. The water can then be reused to water the plants.

The Green Pearl@1540

Fine dining should be an experience. So, the goal here was to surround patrons in sophisiticated and comfortable opulence using the various hues of the Tahitian pearl as the color pallete. The white LVT tile floor with gold veining reflects light upward and provides contrast to the darker colors in the space.

The Green Pearl bar invites diners to lounge in opulent comfort.

The space is awash in neutral hues of creamy beige and soft gold that envelope the room in a warmth that contrasts the bold emerald green palette waiting just beyond the dividing smoked glass partition wall.

Soft light from the wall washers and pendant chandeliers enhance the reflective qualities of the hammered metallic finish on the panel walls behind the bar.

MAKING ROOM FOR FAMILY The family room, pictured left, needed to be reconfigured to foster family time with young children, provide enough seating for large family gatherings and allow the TV to be watched from the kitchen. Additionally, the mantel, surround and the mirror above them had to be removed to make space for new built-in custom bookshelves needed for storaging the tons toys loved by the clients’ 4- and 6-year-old sons. Existing pieces were sold, repurposed and donated to make way for new items. The homeowner and I covered the pink MDF bookcases with reusable grasscloth-look vinyl wallpaper and moved them to the baseement along with the oversized sectional and loveseat. The bookcases now provide additional storage and it’s one less piece of furniture in the landfill.

RECYCLED Vinyl reusable wallpaper gave these circa 1980 bookshelves a much needed refresh while the sofa and love seat were moved to the basement for needed seating.

MAKING ROOM FOR GROWN FOLKS The formal living room off the entry was dark and under-utilized, so the homeowners wanted to change it into an entertainment space for adults. The design solution included a built-in bar, funcional, but beautiful seating, layered lighting and space planning. Existing furniture and decor were sold, donated, or repurposed. The homeowers preferred a tone-on-tone palette, so a mixture of cool and warm browns, greens and golds were used throughtout the space.
