HOW WE FIGHT HUNGER

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUNGER | 11 TH PLANTER AWARDS 3

The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH) began twenty-five years ago with Dr. Melony Samuels's simple act of kindness to a single disabled mother and her four children. Taking food from her supply, Dr. Samuels would later be called upon to meet the needs of many more families who struggled with food insecurity. What started as a modest food pantry feeding 50 families weekly from a church's basement in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, has evolved significantly. In 2006, TCAH introduced a client-choice model in its Super Pantry to assure dignity in food access. The Super Pantry later evolved into mobile pantries to meet the needs of geographically isolated New Yorkers and those with limited access to the emergency food network.

As a leader in food access innovation and advocacy, TCAH is at the forefront of the fight against food injustice for marginalized communities. The organization is dedicated to ensuring struggling families meet their basic needs. TCAH runs multiple programs and services, including the Fresh Vibes Mobile Farmer's Market, which offers affordable, locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables to areas with limited access to healthy food, and the Cyber Pantry. This last-mile delivery program delivers food directly to the homes of vulnerable low-income New Yorkers and seniors in need.

Additionally, TCAH operates two community food distribution warehouses totaling 30,000 square feet in Brooklyn and Far Rockaway, Queens. These centers support TCAH's Urban Healthy Food Coalition, which includes over 200 community partners and advocates who receive food weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly for redistribution to families most in need across the city. TCAH also provides a host of adjunct and wraparound services such as benefits access enrollment and screening for SNAP, publicly supported health insurance, free income tax preparation, urban farms, intergenerational nutrition programs, and culinary and agricultural workforce development and training programs for at-potential youths.

Over the years, we have found that advancing our mission requires a holistic approach to addressing poverty's root causes. We understand that addressing hunger goes beyond providing food in times of crisis. That's why we've tailored our programs to foster fairness, create economic prospects, and empower individuals to achieve self-sufficiency.

We are thrilled to share the news of TCAH's groundbreaking initiatives, including the permanent community food hub, Arverne East Farm, Marlboro Agricultural Educational Center, and the Fresh Vibes E-market. These efforts aim to revolutionize food access, enhance workforce development, and stimulate agricultural economies.

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUNGER | 12 TH PLANTER AWARDS 4

The Campaign Against Hunger is wholeheartedly devoted to eliminating food and nutrition insecurity in New York City. Since the pandemic, TCAH has proudly provided over 1.4 million New Yorkers with 14 million nutritious meals annually. Whether it's from the steps of City Hall to Albany, to Washington, and beyond, we are unwavering in our commitment to advocating for healthy food access because we believe it's a fundamental human right.

As the saying goes, "No man is an island; no man stands alone." Our dedicated staff, Board, donors, friends, foundation, city, state, and federal partners, volunteers, and neighbors are the bedrock of our success. They enable us to stand together in the trenches and work tirelessly every day. With your continued support, we can make a real and lasting difference in the lives of our fellow New Yorkers.

LETTER FROM OUR CEO

Welcome to the 13th Annual Planter Awards Gala, with the empowering theme "Envisioning Tomorrow's Table." Tonight, we gather to celebrate the remarkable strides we have made together in our ongoing battle against hunger. As the CEO and Founder of The Campaign Against Hunger, I am genuinely grateful for your unwavering commitment to our noble cause.

This year, our mission has become even more urgent as more than half of New York's residents are experiencing the challenges of poverty. In light of this, we have ramped up our efforts and are providing meals for 14,000 families weekly. This incredible achievement directly results from our innovative strategies and commitment to ensuring every community member has access to nourishing food. We are dedicated to positively impacting lives and bringing hope to those in need.

The Campaign Against Hunger's "Tomorrow's Table" vision embodies our commitment to accessibility and sustainability. With pioneering efforts such as the Cyber Pantry and Fresh Vibes Market, we are reshaping food distribution. Scaling our urban farming initiative will amplify the growth and production of NYS-grown and value-added foods, effectively addressing food insecurity. The increasing number of hungry families in New York City calls for bold and strategic actions to tackle this crisis head-on. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and ensure that no one in our community goes hungry.

As we continue to build Tomorrow's Table, our services remain absolutely essential. The collective power of our community deeply moves us, and we remain dedicated to feeding New Yorkers and advocating for policies that combat food insecurity. Your continued support is pivotal as we push forward with resolve and compassion.

We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our friends, partners, sponsors, elected officials, and volunteers whose selfless dedication makes our work possible. ABOUT TCAH

The Campaign Against Hunger has truly humble beginnings that began with Dr. Melony Samuels, TCAH’s CEO and founder, responding to the needs of a single mother struggling to feed her four children. This act of kindness grew to serve 50 families in a church basement in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Fast forward 25 years to today, TCAH stands as one of NYC’s food security champions, proudly serving over 1.4 million New Yorkers in 145 zip codes and providing a remarkable 14 million nutritious meals annually.

At TCAH, we firmly believe that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our holistic model ensures equitable access to healthy food along with wrap-around services that reflect our unwavering commitment to finding solutions that adapt to the evolving needs and social dynamics of the communities we serve. Through our multifaceted approach, we are able to provide culturally relevant foods and foster community through nutrition services, public benefits access, urban farms, culinary programs, youth employment opportunities, and other vital programs and services.

While a brick-and-mortar food pantry served us well for the first decade, we realized it limited our capacity to reach a growing community of working families, immigrants, seniors, and youth. In response, TCAH embarked on creating various models of food distribution to ensure access for those who couldn't visit our physical location on Fulton Street due to different reasons.

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUNGER | 12 TH PLANTER AWARDS 10

By actively seeking input from community members who use our services, TCAH is continually innovating and honing a robust and diverse approach to supporting those in need of food while preserving their dignity and addressing their limitations. After the pandemic, TCAH established the Urban Healthy Food Coalition, which consists of community leaders and advocates, to address food access gaps in underserved communities throughout NYC.

We are excited about the future and remain committed to our mission of eradicating food insecurity through our innovative and compassionate approach.

FOSTERING RESILIENCE THROUGH URBAN FARMING

THEJOURNEY OF TCAH'S FARMS AND GARDENS

At TCAH, our CEO and Founder, Dr. Melony Samuels, harbored a bold vision of introducing farming to address the challenge of limited access to fresh food in BedStuy and neighboring areas. Dr. Samuels, a proud Jamaican, believed that any available greenspace could be transformed into a source of nourishment! Despite initial skepticism about farming in an urban setting, she was determined to make a difference, recognizing that many of the families TCAH serves struggle to afford fresh, healthy produce. Undeterred, she embarked on cultivating the two garden plots behind the 2010 Fulton Street location – repurposed as TCAH's Benefits Access Office, and the former pantry at the Full Gospel Tabernacle of Faith Church on 15A Hull St. These became the starting points for the two "Victory Gardens."

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUNGER | 12 TH PLANTER AWARDS 26

Today, these two lots, spanning approximately 4,000 square feet, have blossomed into TCAH's half-acre urban farm in Far Rockaway, Saratoga Farm, Brownsville Farm, and Linden Farm in Brooklyn. Every year, TCAH yields an impressive 20,000 pounds of fresh, leafy greens and vegetables, which are distributed to underserved communities. Additionally, the produce is made available at significantly reduced prices at farmers' markets and mobile pantries. We are thrilled to share that TCAH will embark on a groundbreaking project in 2024, constructing an 8,000-square-foot Urban Agriculture Education Center at the Marlboro Houses in Coney Island. This initiative aims to expand access to nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables within the community.

We are optimistic about the future and remain committed to cultivating hope and health in the communities we serve.

THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST HUNGER | 11 TH PLANTER AWARDS 27

BUILDING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE THROUGH NUTRITION EDUCATION.

THE BIRTH AND EVOLUTION OF TCAH’S NUTRITION EDUCATION CLASSES

The TCAH’s Eat Well Live Well Program was established in 2009 to address health issues among low-income Black and brown older adults in NYC. The program aimed to improve the health and life expectancy of seniors dealing with diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Over the course of 12 weeks, the program focused on lowering blood pressure, reducing weight and tobacco use, enhancing mood, and improving physical strength, endurance, balance, and agility through regular health monitoring and educational classes on healthy living, including cooking practices, nutrition, physical exercise, and gardening.

The success of the Eat Well Live Well program led to the development of the Community Health Initiative Programs (CHIP), which, before the pandemic, provided over 500 intergenerational nutrition education workshops and demonstrations each year, inspiring and educating communities about healthy lifestyle choices. Additionally, TCAH now offers culinary arts training to disadvantaged youths through Beach Eats and Arts Café in Far Rockaway.

As the State Assemblyman of the 68th District, I write to lend my support to the 13th Annual Planter Awards Gala for The Campaign Against Hunger on June 14, 2024.

Dr. Melony Samuels, Executive Director and Founder of The Campaign Against Hunger, is an astonishing example of what a fearless community leader is. Over the past twenty-two years, The Campaign Against Hunger has grown from operating out of a small pantry in a church basement to meeting some of the day’s toughest challenges–like youth empowerment, nutrition education, and community engagement–head-on. The Campaign Against Hunger served neighbors in 150 zip codes with food and other vital programs and services and sought to bring food justice to New York City along the way.

Their mission to empower communities to lead healthier, productive, and self-sufficient lives by increasing access to safe nutritious food motivates and influences other communities to follow by their lead. The Campaign Against Hunger plays a vital role in NYC by not only providing essential food assistance, but also supporting vulnerable communities, fostering resilience, and advocating for systemic change to address hunger and poverty.

It is an honor to be in support of such a foundation as The Campaign Against Hunger, they are truly what our culture and communities need to thrive in the right direction.

Sincerely,
