Editorial

Welcome to TBS Community News, our student-led and written periodical, which proudly aims to offer learners at our school a platform for sharing their ideas, opinions and passions. As you walk down the school corridor, it immediately becomes clear that the heartbeat of our educational community thrives on the diverse voices that comprise it. We are proud to celebrate individuality and actively encourage and support students in expressing their opinions and sharing their passions to foster a sense of ownership and empowerment. When students feel heard and respected, they are more likely to engage actively in their own education. TBS Community News provides opportunities for expression for students, thus cultivating a culture of inclusivity and understanding. Passions are integral to the fabric of our educational journey and fostering curiosity in the world that surrounds us. Whether it be a love for the arts, sciences, sports, or social causes, every student harbours a passion, some still waiting to be unleashed. At TBS Community News we provide a space for sharing passions and talents because we believe that we can help nurture individual growth and inspire others to explore their interests. A school that celebrates and supports diverse passions becomes a hub of creativity and innovation. We are proud to invite you to read our first issue, which lets us embrace the diversity within our school community, recognising that each student has a unique voice that contributes and enriches our collective educational experience. In doing so, we not only prepare ourselves for the challenges that lie ahead but also lay the foundation for a school culture that is rich, dynamic, and deeply rooted in the spirit of shared learning and growth. Help the panda!

– a true story of one unlucky fluffy toy

By: Ania, Wiktoria and Maria, Year 6

T

his week (6th November-12th November) a little girl was playing with her plushie panda and it landed on top of the gazebo. Understandably, she got really upset. Seeing this, some students came to help her. Hard as they could, they tried to get it down with a snack box. Not surprisingly, this method did not work. They moved on to a new idea; they tried to get it down with a coat. Sadly, this did not work either. They went away in search of help. Help was found on the football pitch. The helpers took turns to throw balls in the hope of pushing the panda down. They were patient and

4

resilient as they threw them on the roof of the gazebo. After several attempts and some adjustments in the force and direction of the throws, it finally worked. By that time, there was a growing crowd of onlookers, curious to find out what would happen to the poor panda. As it got gently touched by one ball, another flew straight into it and pushed it off the gazebo. Everyone cheered! It was a notable example of PLG Resilient, Collaborator and Tinker; the children had to think of ways to get the panda down; collaborate to get the panda back to the girl and not give up.

Rights of the Child board

Rights of a child Why were they created?

Reported by: Emma and Andrej, Year 5

T

he Convention on the Rights of the Child was created to help children to be protected and cared about. It was signed on 20th November 1989 but proposed by the Polish delegates to the UN almost ten years before that date. Therefore, we celebrate World Children’s Day every year on 20th November. We do this to celebrate that children have a childhood and can do things.

E

veryone should remember that all children (people under 18 years old) have a right to speak their own opinion, the rights to live in a safe place, also a right to equality, hewalth and some other rights. On World Children’s Day at school we learnt about those rights and celebrated them. There is a display in the primary corridor which children have added their work to.

Dear Reader, we are wondering: 1. Do you know what rights each child has? 2. When you were a child, what rights did you have? 5

I wish I’d known... reflections from students who are new to our school

Reported by: Maja, Year 5

What do you wish you’d known about TBS before joining? As a new student this year, I am interested to know what other joiners think. I have asked new students who have just joined TBS what they wish they’d known on their first day. I have also tried to find out if the new students at TBS were excited about going to a new school and making new friends, and if they have any advice for the children that will join us in the future. Read on to find out more about the questions I asked and what they had to say. Q: The first question I asked them was: Were you excited about going to a new school? A: A bunch of new students answered that they were excited about going to a new school and starting a new chapter of their lives. Some also shared with me that they would miss their old schools and friends. Others confessed that they were excited to leave their old schools and have a new beginning because they’d been living in the same country and going to the same school for very long and were ready for a change.

6

There was also a group of new students who were not happy about going to a new school because they loved their old school. I can only hope that they will love TBS at least as much once they have settled in. But what could help them? What do they wish they had known and didn’t before joining. I was hoping they could tell me this and that we could share it with other children joining TBS in the future to help then settle in. This was the question I posed to them: Q: What do you wish you had known on the first day of school at TBS?

A: I was surprised to get many different answers. Some reflected my experience, others did not. Almost everyone shared with me that they had wished they had some sort of a map to help them find their way around the building. They sometimes wondered where all the classrooms and other rooms were. For example, there are many different ways to get to the canteen, some quicker than others. Some students said they wish they’d known where the canteen was and how to get there quickly to get a good place in the lunch line. Others wanted to go to the library on their first day. Some children also said they wish they’d known where their classroom was before they came on their first day so they could easily find it in the morning. Other than the geography of our campus, new students wished they had known the names of all their teachers, including languages or Music. I guess meeting a new teacher can be stressful so knowing their names may help. Then

some students said they wish they’d known not only all their teachers’ names but also their classmates’ names. Final question: Q: Do you have any advice for children that will join us in the future? A: The new students mostly said to remember that coming to a new school is not a bad thing and to think that it is just a new chapter of your life. I generally got positive answers from the new students. They also said that it is a good idea to ask many questions so you can find out all the information that you want to know. These are all the questions I asked the students. I really hope you enjoyed reading this article. The students I interviewed did not want their names to be mentioned in this article so I kept their answers anonymous.

Lunar New Year By Zanzan, Tiaotiao and Yueyue, Year 4

The history of Lunar New Year Lunar New Year is the beginning of the new year based on the Lunar Calendar or Lunisolar Calendar. It has a history of more than 3000 years. It is one of the most important celebrations of the year among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Mongolia. Each year is associated with an animal that corresponds to an element. Year 2024 is the year of the dragon. The New Year celebrations last several days. For example, Chinese New Year celebrations will last 15 days, and end with a festival named Lantern Festival. Parades, dances, games

and fireworks mark the finale of the holiday. New Year is a special time to bring friends and family together. It’s also a time to celebrate your beliefs. In preparation for the Lunar New Year, houses are thoroughly cleaned to open space for good will and good luck. On the first day, those who celebrate don’t take out rubbish or clean, as doing so is said to wash away your luck and prosperity.

Yueyue, Year 4, 1st Place Winner in House Competition

The legend Like all traditional festivals in China, Chinese New Year is steeped in stories and myths. One of the most popular is about the mythical beast Nian, who ate livestock, crops, and even people on New Year’s Eve. To prevent Nian from attacking people and causing destruction, people put food at their doors for Nian, but it didn’t work very well. Later on, there was a wise old man who figured out that Nian was scared of loud noises, like firecrackers, and of the colour red. Then, people put red lanterns and red scrolls on their windows and doors to stop Nian from coming inside. They also crackled bamboo (later replaced by firecrackers) to scare Nian away. The monster Nian never showed up again.

In China, a common way to wish your family and close friends a Happy New Year is Xīnnian Hǎo, meaning New Year Goodness or Good New Year. Another greeting is Xīn Nián Kuài Lè, meaning Happy New Year.

Traditional celebrations During New Year, people will do some of those activities: People from China give out money in red paper and believe that it brings good luck; People perform the traditional lion dance from China; People go to restaurants and have food together; They decorate their houses in red for good luck;

Traditional Food According to the Lunar Calendar, 22 days before Chinese New Year’s Eve is the beginning of the food tradition. On that day, people eat the ‘Laba Congee.’ The Congee consists of four kinds of beans and four kinds of rice and it is extremely healthy. It symbolizes the wish for harvest in the following year. There is another very important thing to do on that day. It is marinating garlic in vinegar for a month, until it turns emerald green. It will be eaten with dumplings on the first day of the Lunar Year. Then comes the favourite day for children, the ‘Little New Year.’ On that day, people eat a kind of malt candy, called the Guan Dong candy. It is very sticky. People also give it to the kitchen god as part of a sacrificial ceremony. It is believed that after eating the sticky malt candy, the god’s mouth will be sealed and cannot say anything to hurt people. In the following days leading up to Lunar New Year, people eat traditional food, which includes tofu, chicken, pork and steam buns. All these dishes are related to best wishes for the following year. The main event of Lunar New Year is family dinner. On that day, the whole family work together for the whole day to prepare a lot of dishes for dinner. Normally, the menu includes fish, rice cakes, dumplings, seafood, spring rolls and whatever you love to eat. Traditionally, people put a coin or a bean in one of the dumplings. Whoever finds it is the lucky one. All of these mean one

thing: All the Best for Next Year. Even if you are worried or have some problems, you forget them on the day. You spend the day with your close ones; this is what Lunar New Year is all about. The last dish of Lunar New Year is consumed on the fifth day. These are delicious rice balls. They mean ‘happy reunion.’ After this, we finish our celebrations of Lunar New Year. Officially, at that stage, we start a bright new year, full of exciting adventures, new targets and hopes. Xīn Nián Kuài Lè (Happy New Year)

Be eco-friendly Reported by: Nirvi, Year 6

Have you ever wondered how long the Earth will last? No one knows for sure how many years it will last but it surely depends on us, at least partly. This article is about saving the planet and increasing awareness of the need to be eco-friendly. Now, you might ask ‘How can I save the planet?’ Well, there are plenty of ways to save the planet. Here are some ways: DON’T WASTE PAPER. TRY NOT TO WASTE WATER. PICK UP THE TRASH IF YOU SEE SOME AND PUT IT IN THE CORRECT BIN. RRR: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.   DON’T THROW FOOD AWAY. SWITCH OFF THE LIGHT WHEN YOU ARE NOT USING IT. TRY NOT TO USE PLASTIC BAGS, INSTEAD USE A REUSABLE BAG.

Did you know that 15.3 billion trees are cut down a year? People and companies cut down trees to make furniture, paper and toys. We could help by planting a tree and using the items made of wood as long as we can, instead of getting new ones. Did you know that 78% of marine animals are at risk of ingesting plastic or choking on it? This is because when there is plastic on the seashore, it goes into the water. Later, this can be found by marine animals and the animals might eat it and choke. This is why you should always clean up after yourself and not leave any trash behind.

For us, for the Earth and for a better future, we must protect the planet. Do anything you can for the planet, now that you know how important it is.

Disallowed Goal Sparks Controversy in Thrilling Match Reported by: Rizgar and Daniil, Year 9

Fans and Players Disappointed as Referee’s Decision Alters Game Dynamics In a nail-biting game that had everyone on the edge of their seats, Luiz Diaz faced disappointment when his goal was disallowed, causing a stir among fans and players. The match, already filled with excitement, took a dramatic turn when Diaz scored what seemed to be a crucial goal. Fans erupted in cheers, but the celebration was short-lived as the referee ruled the goal out. Replays showed that Diaz was onside when he scored, raising questions about the referee’s decision. Diaz expressed his frustration, saying, “I was sure I timed my run perfectly. It’s disappointing when a game like this is affected by controversial decisions”.

The referee defended the call, citing an assistant referee’s offside flag. However, many fans argued that technology like VAR should be used to avoid such errors. The controversy has reignited the debate about introducing VAR in the league for fair and accurate decisions. Critics say the absence of such technology can impact match outcomes. The disallowed goal changed the game’s dynamics, and the opposing team took advantage to secure a narrow victory. Both teams and their fans were left disappointed, pondering the impact of the decision on the match’s result. Luiz Diaz’s disallowed goal will be remembered as a contentious moment, emphasizing the need for discussions on using technology to ensure fair play and prevent crucial decisions from overshadowing the beauty of the game.

About Oceanic Giants: Whales

A whale, drawing by Olha, Year 5

Reported by: Olha, Year 5

Whales are the most incredible animals in the world. They are enormous and fascinating giants who live in the ocean. Usually, whales live between 50 or 90 years. I think this topic is really interesting because there are 100 types of whales to learn about! Interesting facts about whales:

14

1

A whale tongue can weigh as much as an elephant.

2

Whales are mammals, like people.

3

Whales breathe with the air from the atmosphere.

4

Whales can hear each other’s sounds even if they are 100 km away from each other.

5

The blue whale is so long that eight elephants could stand on one blue whale, one behind another. Whales inhabit all oceans of the world, from temperate oceans and the tropical waters around the equator to the polar waters of

the Artic and Antarctic Oceans. They are also found in many seas, such as the North Sea and the Mediterranean. Whales eat a variety of marine animals, including fish, squid, octopuses and crustaceans. Killer whales, or orcas, eat marine mammals, such as sea lions, seals, walruses, dolphins, and even other whales. So try to avoid them in the wild if you can. Whales have very few natural enemies, but they can be attacked or eaten by humans, who are the main predators of whales and hunt them for various purposes. Polar bears also eat small whales or large beached whales. Scientists believe that whales appeared 50 million years ago, a long time after the extinction of the dinosaurs. However, this was also a long time before the appearance of the first humans. Their ancestor is most likely an ancient artiodactyl, i.e. a four-legged, even-toed hoofed land mammal, adapted for running. They are such fascinating animals that one was even the main character in a well-known novel by Herman Melville.

Hello kittens! Reporter: Jaein, Year 6

In this article, I have selected the most important information for cat owners or those who are considering getting a cat. I will tell you about: little kittens; foods which are dangerous for cats; and, how to make cat toys.

Food for little kittens: There are three kinds of cat food which are suitable for little kittens:

Foods which can be dangerous for cats and kittens:

1. Dry food – it is not very good for kittens’ young teeth but they can try to have it.

Chocolate is very dangerous for cats and kittens. They are also some fruits that are edible for cats and kittens but they shouldn’t have too much of them. These are: watermelon, melon, apples, bananas, pears, cantaloupe melon, and strawberries.

2. Wet food – it is good for kittens’ young teeth, and they really enjoy it. 3. Chopped meat – it is good for kittens as well and probably their favourite. It is also very good for old cats.

How to make toys for cats and kittens: Cats and kittens love to play. You can buy toys for them in the shop or make some yourself. Here is how. Toy 1: catnip fish

Toy 2. Play house

1. Dry some catnip for one week.

1. Take a cardboard box and stick the top of the cardboard box close with tape.

2. Crumble the dried catnip. 3. Cut two piece of thick cloth into a shape of a fish and sew them together, leaving only a little hole for the catnip to go in. 4. Pour dried catnip into the fish and sew it all.

2. Draw many circles. Some circles should be bigger and some circles smaller than your cat or kitten. 3. Cut out the circles. 4. Put some catnip in the play house.

5. Squeeze the fish to make the catnip smell come out.

Enjoy. I know your cat will. 15

The Unpredictable Soundscape of Bad Bunny’s ‘Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana’ Reported by: Lucas, Year 9

ew musicians have forged a career as fascinating and surprising in the constantly changing field of Latin music as Bad Bunny. With every release, he pushes the limits of current music and redefines the genres, taking his listeners on a journey through a complex and varied world. ‘Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana’, his most recent release, continues this legacy of innovative sound design and poetic skill, thrilling both listeners and critics. We’re excited to take you on a fascinating journey into the unknown as we explore this highly anticipated album. As the title implies, nobody can predict what the future holds, but in Bad Bunny’s hands, there’s no telling what might happen. It’s worthwhile to experience the musical future. This is our analysis of ‘Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana’, an unpredictable and genre-defying soundscape.

He explores topics ranging from heartbreak and luxury to his mental state and his position in the music industry. ‘MONACO’ is the second song on the album Nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana. In this song, Benito talks about how he has made a name for himself in the music industry and the various luxuries he now enjoys. The beat of the song samples ‘Hier Encore’, a project by Frenchman Charles Aznavour released in 1964 and from which they also took part of the vocals to make an interlude. My favorite song by far is ‘UN PREVIEW’, which was made known through Bad Bunny’s WhatsApp channel where he wrote that he was going to release a song in September 2023. Shortly after he posted a preview, letting us know the release date: ‘COMES OUT TOMORROW MONDAY AT 8PM PR TIME’.

ith ‘Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana’, Bad Bunny takes listeners on a musical journey that breaks stereotypes, transcends genre lines, and proves his unparalleled creative ability. This is obviously more than simply an album from the very first notes; it’s an exciting journey into the unknown world of Latin music. Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, is a musician who isn’t afraid to try new things, break the mold, and expertly integrate influences with impeccable style. In ‘NADIE SABE’, the introductory track to Nadie sabe lo que va a pasar mañana, Bad Bunny talks about many issues that have been around his persona for all the years of his career, from his beginnings to the present. This time with a chiptune melody, popular in old video games and arcade. ‘WHERE SHE GOES’ was revealed by Bad Bunny on May 15, 2023, In the song, Benito talks to a woman he had a one-night intimate encounter with, guessing that he will not see her again because of her reluctance to meet again. He keeps developing with this new record, creating complex stories and pushing the boundaries uniquely. A mosaic of sounds, emotions, and musical genres, ‘Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana’ is a tribute to the unpredictable adventure that is Bad Bunny’s career, keeping fans eagerly awaiting what comes next.

o completely understand ‘Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana’, it is necessary to first consider Bad Bunny’s incredible musical career to date. Bad Bunny has continuously changed the landscape of Latin music with a discography that includes critically acclaimed albums like ‘X 100pre’ and ‘YHLQMDLG’, in addition to notable joint efforts with Cardi B and J Balvin on songs like ‘Te Boté’ and ‘I Like It’. He has

a devoted worldwide fan base thanks to his ability to slickly combine reggaeton, trap, and other genres with socially and politically charged messages. Upon exploring this latest release, we can’t help but wonder how ‘Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana’ will fit into the eclectic mix of inventiveness and ingenuity that has come to define the Bad Bunny brand. Will it be the start of a new chapter in his artistic career or just more evidence of his unparalleled

musical genre for Bad Bunny, as he rarely produces trap songs. Bad Bunny’s risky move into a new genre paid off, as it now has over a million Spotify streams. It clearly worked for Bad Bunny, although it is not as fantastic as his last album ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’. Overall, I would give it an 8.5/10 because it has some good music, but his previous album was better because he is a better reggaeton producer.
