Veteran’s office to reopen in 2017 Veterans Affairs minister confirms during Thunder Bay visit Liberals will live up to election promise T H U N D E R B AY

he federal government is making good on its promise to reopen Veteran Affairs offices across Canada, including the office in Thunder Bay. Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, Kent Hehr, was in Thunder Bay last Thursday morning to make the announcement. The Veterans Affairs office in Thunder Bay, which was closed under the previous government in January 2014, will reopen by January 2017.

Hehr said that veterans and their families face complex issues during and following service. Providing better service for these veterans was part of the promise that his government made during last year’s election.

“We need that in person touch that just wasn’t being done under the former government and wasn’t being offered in this community,” Hehr said. “We owe it as a nation to do right by [veterans].”

The office in Thunder Bay will be located at 130 Syndicate Ave. South and employ eight staff. The office will provide information to veterans on Veterans Affairs Canada services, arrange pension and medical examina­ tions, and provide case­managers to work directly with veterans and their families.

community.

“If you think that I’m happy ,you want to see the veterans that are out there and not here today that are going to be really proud to have someone to go to, someone to talk to,” he said.

contact with case managers and often endured long waits over the phone, only to be connected to a voice mail.

“It’s been awful,” he said. “Not only that, but the phone has been ringing at my house after I went to Ottawa to find out what we were going to do, and we never had answers for them, and now today it’s proving a point that we are going to have an office here and we’re going to be darn proud of it.”

Robert Cutbush, District 8 Commander of the Manitoba/ Northwestern Ontario Command, Royal Canadian Legion, said when he first heard the news the offices were going to reopen, it felt a little surreal.

“I’m happy now,” he said. “I am a veteran who uses the services. When the offices did close in January 2014, I felt the disconnect with the depart­ ment.”

The Thunder Bay office is one of nine Veterans Affairs offices reopening in Canada, at a cost of $70 million.

“We are looking at these as invest­ ments not costs,” Hehr said. “They are going to help veterans build their lives and you can’t put a price tag on that.”

Lamore added that the services provided by Veterans Affairs are invaluable and it makes veterans proud to know that they have someone there backing them up.

“Don’t sell veterans short,” he said.

“These guys put their lives on the line for all of us. I don’t want to sell them short. They are not just veterans.”

Its CEO is calling the incident "a sign of the times.”

At about 4 p.m. last Thursday, a heavily­disguised man dressed as a construction worker walked into the credit union’s teller area demanding money and exclaiming “this is no joke.”

The first­ever Bay Credit Union thief escaped on a bicycle with a small amount of cash.

“It's a sign of the times in my mind,” said CEO Lynne LeGros.

“In my mind the violence in this city has gotten a little bit out of hand, if I can say. The police are very, very heavily taxed and everybody knows that.

Obviously, it has been escalating from all the Mac’s (convenience store robberies) and everything else and it’s escalating into other areas.”

The credit union’s administration is now reflecting on changes that may need to be made to security in the robbery’s aftermath.

LeGros called counselling services immediately after calling police. She said to the staff’s credit, every employee who was scheduled to work on Friday showed up.

She lamented the human cost of the experience as the real loss for the branch.

“It’s unfortunate because it’s the human casualty more than anything else that I’m concerned about. People who do this don’t realize what they’re doing to people,” LeGros said.

“I really hope they get him and I have full confidence that they’re going to.”

Food bank to grow City donates kitchen equipment to RFDA from senior homes T H U N D E R B AY

By Leith Dunick – TB Source hunder Bay’s shuttered homes for the aged may leave a legacy for the city’s hungry.

Kitchen equipment from Dawson Court and Grandview Lodge, both closed earlier this year with the opening of the new Hogarth Riverview Manor, has been donated by the city to the Regional Food Distribution Association.

Executive director Volker Kromm said the equipment will be the centrepiece of a major kitchen expansion planned for 2017, a move that will allow the organiza­ tion to become more sustainable through increased revenue.

It was a phenomenal gift, Kromm said.

“We were able to access a lot of that commercial equipment in the Dawson Court facility and bring that here,” he said, interviewed late last week.

“Right now it’s in storage, but we’ll turn that into commercial production equipment and we’ll be able to puree food or make fresh vegetables and soups and things we can freeze and dehy­ drate.”

The food in turn will become a source of revenue to help out the RFDA’s bottom line.

For us to be able to hire staff and provide the programming, we do need more revenue. This is an opportu­ nity where we can sustain ourselves and not be as reliant on the city as we are.”

The organization at present prepares more than 26,000 meals per month for needy families.

The goal is to double that capacity.

It’s no wonder Kromm said he was excited at the haul, which includes steam kettles that dump and have taps, a rational oven that allows them to cook in a shorter

time frame and freezers that let them cool food rapidly.

“There are a lot of great things – meat slicers on a commercial scale that we can provide a lot of great food,” he said.

The plan is to start work on the project in the new year. Much of the infrastructure is already in place, including gas, sewer and hydro hook­ups.

“This kitchen right now is used by at least 12 schools in the city and a number of caterers and organizations that come here to use the kitchen. But now, with this social enterprise we’ll be able to run it as a small business – probably somewhat separate from the regular infrastructure of the RFDA.”

Olympic excellence hat a week for Canadian athletes at the Olympic Games in Rio. And what a sign of things to come for the country on the world stage.

Start with swimmer Penny Oleksiak.

The Ontario­born 16­year­old quickly became the darling of the 2016 Games, winning a gold, silver and two bronze medals in the pool.

On Sunday night, sprinter Andre De Grasse captured bronze in the marquee 100­metre men’s race – and the atten­ tion of three­time champion Usain Bolt, finishing just 2/100ths of a second behind silver­medal finisher Justin Gatlin of the United States.

Back to the pool, Kenora’s Santo Condorelli finished fourth in the 100­ metre freestyle final, just 3/100ths of a second outside of a medal position.

The 21­year­old shrugged it off, saying essentially, no worries, it’s my first Olympic Games.

It’s also been a great year for women in Rio. Of the country’s 13 medals, as of Tuesday morning, 12 have been won by female athletes – including a repeat gold on the trampoline by Rose MacLennan.

Canada may or may not equal the 20­ medal haul its athletes took in four years ago in London. But at this point, does it really matter?

This summer’s Olympic Games have already succeeded in reinvigorating a healthy dose of national pride.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR No to convention centre To the editor: am sure I will be labelled anti­ progress by those who love the idea of an event centre but even after all of this time, I still do not understand this proposal.

This idea was proposed specifically because under the previous govern­ ment, no funding could be obtained for a hockey rink. We needed to add the convention centre component to qualify.

We have now seen that even under our new government, this proposal still does not qualify.

I will leave that issue for another time, but my concerns are more specific to the idea of an event centre being a positive for our city. I have several questions that I hope someone can clearly answer.

Are conventions a growing economy because from anything I have found, less and less businesses are using conventions to gather people.

It seems to me that we would be competing for shrinking dollars.

Do we believe that these conven­ tions will repeatedly return to Thunder Bay, or is it more likely that we will obtain them once and they will move to other parts of the country or around North America.

Is it really feasible to expect people from the United States to catch a minimum of two flights and likely three, to travel to Thunder Bay for a conference from January to April?

When you consider our geography, the ability of individuals to drive here is limited, meaning that almost all who attend will have to fly here.

As most conventions will be held during our winter season, are we really an attractive destination when there are hundreds of other choices.

Given the position of some on council, that we should sell golf courses and not compete with private industry, how can those same individ­ uals support creating a business with taxpayer dollars that will directly compete with our hotels and banquet halls that are already in the business of hosting these events.

If the Victoria Inn loses a conference to the convention centre, we have not created new dollars for our city, we have merely shifted them from private to public.

Given that all of the large concerts that people hope to attract to our city will be held in the rink and not in the convention hall, why is the new rink not our priority.

Finally, have we given any thought to partnering with an existing private facility, I will use the Valhalla for this question only, and perhaps obtain funding to double or triple their main hall in order to attract some of these conventions at a fraction of the cost

for the taxpayer and allowing private industry to run this process. I am one of those individuals that is fully supportive of moving forward with a new rink, sooner rather than later as the cost is certainly continuing to rise.

I am also one of those individuals that has yet to see a sound business case that makes sense to add millions of dollars in cost, and hundreds of thousands in annual expenses to a facility that by all appearances will be used sparingly.

Would it be nice to have, of course, but in order to be successful, Thunder Bay does not need everything every other city has.

We need to build to our strengths, and not believe that if we build it they will come.

I am more than willing to say I am wrong in these concerns but to this point, I just have not seen a sound financial plan that says this conven­ tion component is the way to proceed.

It seems the belief is that we need to take a leap of faith in order to move our city forward.

Is it wrong to believe that our city can still move forward in a positive way by doing something a bit smaller, but doing it right.

Let's move forward with the rink now.

I do not think it is wrong to suggest that the majority of the city would be quickly on board.

Boulevard has potential To the editor: oulevard has such potential. It'd be really nice to see it get some more modern­day events, like wakeboard­ ing or waterskiing championships.

Maybe even drag boat races. I'm not totally sure what the specs need to be on the lake for such things, but person­ ally I don't see why it couldn't be done.

Even a big beach volleyball tourna­ ment, or erect a "tower" and get one of those massive inflatable blobs out there where someone lays on one end and two or three people jump off the tower onto it and send the person airborne.

Now that would be awesome, and get people out there everyday.

Why not erect one of those huge slides that’s essentially a big slip and slide that you fly down and catch air into the water.

Maybe this sounds far­fetched to some, but money­wise none of this is

unrealistic or crazy expensive.

All the city has to do is not spend anymore money on so called art like massive rocks and rusted steel I­beams that speak with what look like Christmas lights on them.

How much did those monstrosities cost again?

Rather than doing that, put money into things that are interactive and fun, and provide a multitude of entertain­ ment instead of just sitting there collecting bird droppings and rusting away.

I say it again, such potential in this city, maybe we just need some youthful minds in city council.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Dragon Boat Festival is great.

I just think if we focused on having a broader spectrum of events there, it could really get the place bumping and see big crowds there on weekly occur­ rences instead of literally one day out of the entire year.

That's just sad, really.

We've got a great man­made lake there, the sky's the limit really.. It just seems like a waste to me.

t may not be for everybody, but for some good, honest Canadians with high ethical standards and personal integrity, a few jobs just opened up.

These positions are prized for a number of obvious reasons – salary, prestige, influence – but the successful applicants should aspire to loftier goals.

The basic requirements are easily met – if you are a Canadian citizen, 30 to 75 years, and you own $4,000 worth of real property, you can apply.

If you meet these requirements, you may have what it takes to be appointed a Canadian senator.

Ideally you would be nominated for the position but a new online applica­ tion allows for self­nomination as well.

More to do There is more to the process, including a nine­page application form, but this is part of the demo­ cratic change promised by our new government.

The next phase of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s stated intention to make the Senate more independent and non­partisan, is under way.

It began with the appointment of seven independent Senators earlier this year and continues with twenty more vacancies needing to be filled.

The first seven were selected by the PM from a short list of 25 names, submitted by the senate advisory board.

The appointees include an Order of Canada winner, an Aboriginal judge and a Paralympic gold medal athlete.

They were chosen from 284 nomi­ nations as part of a new process designed to make more Canadians eligible for a Senate appointment.

In spite of recent scandals, what conscientious Canadian wouldn’t enjoy the $142,400 salary and a comfortable seat in the red chamber?

But before you book your flight to Ottawa (travel expenses are included) consider for yourself whether or not you are worthy.

Regardless of Senators Duffy, Wallin and Brazeau and their past indiscretionss, the standards and expectations are high.

Nominees must demonstrate “knowledge, personal qualities and qualifications related to the role of the Senate.”

Applicants may use up to one thousand words to explain how their experience and personal attributes make them eligible.

The job is open to Canadian citizens who display “outstanding personal qualities including…ethics and integrity.”

Prospective appointees should “demonstrate a solid knowledge of the legislative process and Canada’s constitution.”

At this point many Canadians, myself included, will wish they had paid closer attention in civics class in preparation for a seat in the red chamber.

No self­respecting wannabee Senator should graduate without a clear understanding of how

Canadians are governed.

Unfortunately, my education only included a brief, one semester civics class in high school and many mysteries of government still baffle me.

If I decide to apply for the job | may have to pad that portion of the appli­ cation and try to bluff my way through the interview.

From my perspective, that must be the way some current Senators got their seats in the old days.

You get what you pay for, so to speak.

Answers required Political and lobbying activities won’t disqualify an applicant, but some connected individuals may have some explaining to do.

If necessary, they can take up to 500 words to explain their personal, non­bias, non­partisan perspective on things.

If they can convince the Senate Advisory Board to forward their names it will be up to the Prime Minister to weed them out.

I hope Mr. Trudeau is successful in appointing more “regular” Canadians to the Senate.

The perspective of the “average Joe”, good, honest, hard­working Canadians, is often missing from the debate.

It’s too late for this round but as the senate advisory board website suggests, keep checking for future opportunities.

SOUTH-SIDE INCIDENT: A stabbing occured Friday at this Cameron Street residence.

Man, 34 stabbed CRIME

By Leith Dunick – TB Source Thunder Bay man is lucky to be alive after a drug­related stabbing this past Friday night at a Cameron Street resi­ dence.

Police on Monday said the 34­year­old victim, who likely knew his attacker, was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with serious injuries, but is recovering in hospital days after the bloody incident occurred.

“This was a very serious injury that he sustained,” police spokesman Chris Adams said on Monday. “This individual is still in hospital receiving treatment for that. It was an altercation that occurred at a residence on Cameron Street.

“It’s believed the individuals were known to each other and unfortunately this appears to have been drug­related as well.”

Asked if police had a suspect they were looking for, Adams said it’s still an active investigation.

“There is still some work to be done as far as identifying the exact identity.

Unfortunately given the circumstances around it, it’s a very challenging investi­ gation to find out exactly who is responsible,” Adams said.

“Of course, given the individuals injuries, that makes it difficult for follow­ up right now.”

Police were well aware of the residence prior to the stabbing incident, Adams added.

“Certainly it has a lot of activity some­ times surrounding it and in this particular case, it really just comes down to being 100 per cent accurate as to who that indi­ vidual is,” he said. “Anytime you have an investigation with someone involving serious injuries, there’s a waiting time as well to do more follow­up.”

esidents of Gull Bay First Nation will vote on Sept. 10 to accept or reject an $8.2­million timber claim offer.

Chief Wilfred King in a release said the Timber Royalties Specific Claim addresses the country’s failure to fulfill fiduciary duties and legal obligations when awarding contracts to outside contractors allowing them to remove resources from within the Aboriginal community’s boundaries and the subse­ quent payments owed to the First Nation.

King said he’s pleased the process has arrived at an offer and that a vote is imminent, after an eight­year process.

“Gull Bay First Nation continued to push onward. We engaged a team of professionals to review the evidence, to produce new historical reports and to develop estimation models as to damages and losses incurred,” King said in the release.

“It has taken a good amount of work over a very long period of time and the maintenance of a strong position by Gull Bay First Nation to present our circum­ stances as to the full scope of impacts.”

“It is once again critical that all Gull Bay First Nation members are encour­ aged to update their contact information to ensure their full participation in this and upcoming processes of their nation,” King said, noting there are three outstanding claims in progress and that he remains hopeful the Crown responds to requests to discuss a resolution of the band’s land­base claim filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice this past February.

According to King, the country failed to recognize Gull Bay First Nation under the original Robinson­Superior Treaty in 1850, and says the band is owed back­dated royalties between that time and when the community was offi­

cially recognized.

Negotiations continue in an ongoing flood grievance claim between the community and both the provincial and federal governments. Gull Bay First Nation settled a $12.5­million claim with Ontario Power Generation related to the same grievance.

The band is also pursuing a highway expropriation claim.

“Our nation simply seeks fair and just resolution to longstanding issues,” King said. “It has always been our preference to work together to address the errors of the past. It is the intention of Gull Bay First Nation council to ensure our rights are protected under the treaty and we hope that the governments will move quickly to negotiate disputes rather than force our matters through litigation.”

The video’s producer and star Theresa Longo is not only a model, musician and actor. She’s also a shareholder with KWG, the company at the centre of the Ring of Fire development that posted her “five facts” video to its YouTube channel this week.

Longo pitched The Mining Minute segment to KWG president Frank Smeenk at a Toronto prospecting conference in March.

Arguing young people seldom visit corporate websites, Longo suggested she could produce bite­sized video segments to generate social media interest among millennials.

The series garnered views in the hundreds until its controversial Episode 23, which had attracted more than 91,000 by Monday night.

“There are people who say it’s too sexy, but we don’t feel that way. It was at the cottage, it’s a beautiful setting and we were just hanging out up there and enjoying ourselves,” Longo said.

“We did take lengths to even protect our modesty a little bit in the video, as it is. We made sure we were wearing shorts and I had a crop­top on for much of it.”

Longo added she and her co­host (referred to only as Ashley) shot the segments without doing their hair or makeup.

While she conceded online reaction has been mixed, she said those who know the work she has done over the last five years in mining public relations have come to her defence.

“To me, it’s a little bit shocking that people – some of the media as well – is quick to sexualize it. We didn’t go in with the inten­ tion to make it something seductive at all. It was kind of funny and kitschy and a great way to get the message out – and we looked great,” she said.

“This video was meant to bring more awareness to the story.

I’m so happy we succeeded in doing that.”

Strong middle class goal, says Morneau POLITICS

anada’s finance minister scooped out the message last Wednesday evening that the Liberal govern­ ment’s plan to build a “strong middle class” includes those who aren't there yet.

A block from Simpson Street, Bill Morneau served ice cream at Ogden Community Public School as he spoke to neighbourhood residents about recent changes to child benefits that he believes will bring familes closer to the middle class.

During his address in the school­ yard, Morneau reverted to the Liberal promise on upward mobility during last summer’s election campaign.

“Not only were we not growing as fast as we want to but the fruits of that growth – the positive impacts of that growth – aren’t really going to people that really need it for their families,” he said.

“Middle class Canadians are strug­ gling to see the opportunity they want for their children and people who aren’t yet in the middle class can’t yet see how they will get a run up to get there. “ His solution for families of modest incomes is the Canada Child Benefit, whose first cheques were mailed out in July to replace three former entitle­

The Liberals claim nine out of 10 families with children are receiving an average of nearly $2,300 under the new system, with the greatest benefit going to those with household earnings of $30,000 or less.

The program aims to lift 300,000 Canadian children out of 2014 poverty levels by 2017.

“What we’re seeing is people seeing the benefit of the Canada Child Benefit that we know is going to make a material impact on their ability to raise their families, to provide the things they want for their children,” Morneau said.

A Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives report released in July shows between 10 and 15 per cent of the neighbourhood surrounding Ogden school to be “working poor,” the highest percentage area in the city.

According to the 2011 National Household Survey, individual median income is $24,051 per year and 75 per cent of its households are supported by a single breadwinner.

That amounts to just over half the $45,000 minimum income needed to qualify for the new federal middle class tax cut.

Rusnak referred to Simpson Street as locally "infamous" for its socio­ economic challenges but pointed out neighbourhood residents would see significant gains from the changes to child benefits.

"It's a little bit of a depressed area but it does have younger families with lower incomes. Its an area that's affordable that familes flock to," he said.

"We do have a lot of young families here, hopefully getting up in the income bracket as we create jobs here in Thunder Bay but a lot of families here that are certainly getting helped by the child benefit."

Hogarth expansion nearing completion THUNDER BAY

By Nicole Dixon – TB Source ogarth Riverview Manor will have its final expansion com­ plete as early as fall 2016.

In December 2015, the first phase of the 262,000 square foot Hogarth Riverview Manor expansion was complete.

All of the residents from the former Dawson Court and Grandview Lodge in January were moved out of their former homes and into the largest long­term care home in Ontario.

Hogarth vice­president of infra­ structure and planning Scott Potts said construction has moved onto its final stage of adding 32 long­term care beds to the 96 beds at the existing Hogarth Riverview Manor.

“This is happening through two additional wings,” Potts said last Friday at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

“We are monitoring that closely to make sure we can hit those targets.”

Once construction is complete the residents’ move will begin as early as December. If there is any delay, they will be moved sometime in January.

With Bethammi Nursing home remaining open there will be an increase of close to 150 long­term care beds in the community as a result of these projects.

“I think this will improve the flow and the access of people to long­ term care,” he said.

“It’s been a long­standing problem, it has created lots of issues with respect to overcapacity in both St. Joe’s Hospital and the Thunder Bay Regional Sciences Centre.”

He added the additional beds should do a lot to relieve some of the pressures.

“Hopefully it doesn’t kill the event, but it might give us the opportunity to make it bigger with the other paddle sports.”

Pedal to the medal for cancer research

spiring racecar drivers were putting the pedal to the medal in support of cancer research last weekend.

The third annual Thunder Bay Autosport Club AutoX Fundraiser was held in the parking lot of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre last Sunday.

With 39 drivers partici­ pating, the best turnout yet, organizers are hoping to raise more than $6,000 in support of the Northern Cancer Fund.

“It’s great to see a ton of people come out,” said Marc Sacco, treasurer of the Thunder Bay Autosports Club.

“The more drivers the better. A lot of hard work goes into this

event so when people come out and race, it’s just a really great feeling. It makes all the work worth it.”

Drivers are encouraged to raise $100 or more to receive a reduced entry fee. In the past, drivers have raised between $400 and $600.

The AutoX fundraiser has raised more than $11,000 over the last two years. More than $6,000 was raised in the first year alone and Sacco said that with so many drivers partici­ pating this year, he hopes to surpass that total.

“The sky is the limit,” he said. “We don’t really have a goal in mind but at the end of the day, every penny counts, so whatever we can pull through, that would be great.”

“I’m racing today to support all the girls in the boat who’ve had breast cancer,” Britton said after her team’s first race.

“It’s something that’s close to me because my mother had breast cancer and both my sisters have had breast cancer as well.”

The Dragons of Hope team has been paddling in the Thunder Bay Dragon Boat Festival since the beginning.

They are a group of breast cancer survivors and supporters who come together every summer to race their boat across Boulevard Lake.

“It’s great,” Britton said.

“They are such a support group, they’ve all had breast cancer with the exception of three of us who are supporting members,” she said.

She added the team supports each other no matter what, because they’ve all been through a similar experience and even though she isn’t a breast cancer survivor she said it’s something to be proud of.

Father and son cling to life for six hours in icy Lake Superior waters Lifejackets given credit for saving lives on lake THUNDER BAY

“We just never gave up,” Rich said.“The thought of continuing to fight, to get us home. I knew that as long as we held on that someone was going to find us.”

The longer they spent in the water, the harder it became to hold on, as five­foot waves continued to flip and turn their 14­foot aluminum canoe.

The only thing keeping their heads above the water and preventing them from drowning were the lifejackets on their backs.

When they set out on a short fishing trip from their camp at Portage Drive on June 11, the lake was calm. Not long into the trip the winds started to blow from the west

Unable to turn back to shore because of the wind and the waves, the canoe was eventually swamped and the duo was thrown into the

water.

“One big wave picked us up and dropped us,” 13­year­old Alex said, describing the moment the canoe capsized. “I grabbed the boat right away.”

Everything in the canoe was blown away or lost in the waves, including Rich’s cellphone that was in a plastic bag but fell out of his pocket when he fell into the water. With only the canoe and their life jackets to keep them afloat, Alex sat waist­deep in the half­submerged canoe, while Rich clung to the side. For hours, the wind and waves continued to push them further out into Black Bay. “I was definitely scared for my son,” Rich said.“I know that it’s Lake Superior and the water gets very cold and it was very cold that day.”

The water temperature that day was between three and four degrees Celsius. In water that cold, hypothermia can set in within minutes. Rich and Alex were in the water for almost six hours.

“The whole time we knew and we talked to each other, saying: Mom is going to see that we’re not there and get some help, and that’s exactly what happened,” Rich said.

Shivering, numb, bruised, and cut, Alex spotted a boat cutting through the five­foot waves.

“That’s probably the happiest I’ve ever been,” Alex recalled.“Once I saw that boat, I just started screaming to come over here and put my hands up in the air.”

The Coast Guard dispatched a C­ 130 from Kingston and the OPP and volunteers searched the lake for hours. The pair were eventually pulled from the water by an off­duty OPP officer and neighbor, who ventured out into the rough waters to search for the lost boaters. Rich and Alex had drifted so far from shore that it took 30 minutes by boat to bring them back.

“I can’t even express in words how much I appreciate them just going out to look for us,” Rich said of all those who participated in the search.

After they were transported to hospital, Rich and Alex learned that they were lucky to even be alive.

Suffering from thermal burns on their legs and severe hypothermia, their kidneys and livers were already starting to shut down and the white blood cell count in their blood was as high as a person with cancer.

“We were shutting down, our

Local brewery gets new home BUSINESS

The owners of Sleeping Giant Brewery plan to test out that theory. Work is already underway on construction on the company’s new home, a MacDonell Street location that will double the size and allow them to offer more beer, more selection and widen their market base.

The company this year outgrew its present Cobalt Crescent location, impacting their ability to produce enough suds to meet consumer demand in Thunder Bay and in other communities throughout Ontario.

‘Ambitious’ Co­founder and co­owner Kyle Mulligan said it’s an ambitious plan, but one that will take the company to the next level in the brewery business.

“We pretty much outgrew our space at the beginning of this year and it’s really put a strain on us this summer,” Mulligan said Thursday at an open house showcasing their new location.

“Essentially we’re packaging beer and selling out the same day to our licensees and local customers. We’ve actually pulled back from further outside Thunder Bay, just to make sure we can supply Thunder Bay with our beer. This next step will more than double our capacity.”

More beer This also means more types of beer in production, including regular stocking on specialty brands like Elevator Ale, Mulligan said.

“Currently we make sure we have our Northern Logger, our 360 and our Skull Rock Stout all the time,” Mulligan said.

“Every now and then we make the Beaver Duck, Hoppet IPA, Bay Street Brown Ale as well as the Armoury Ale. We want to bring the Elevator Ale back, we want to bring Selfie Saison back and we also want to start introducing new beers like Belgians.”

It’s what people want, he added. “(Craft beers) just keep growing. Every day we get new people trying craft beer. It’s great for beer, it’s great for local and it’s great for Thunder Bay as well.”

The long­term plan is to add a tap­house to the new location and serve food.

Vacancy rate going up HOUSING

The Vacancy rate is sitting at 4.6 per cent in the city, up from 4.2 per cent last year, and the record low of 1.1­per cent in 2012. CMHC Market Analyst Warren

Philp said there's been a big rise in available units over the past five years.

Philip added that there are many factors contributing to the jump, including the new residence units that came on stream at Confederation College last year, which added rental supply to the market.

Philip said he doesn't expect much of a change in the vacancy rate in the next CMHC forecast.

Berry picking and one wild ride FRED JONES RURAL ROOTS aturday morning: sunny, warm but not yet hot, the sky blue. My S wife, Laura, suggested we go for a walk. She grabbed a couple of shop­ ping bags and two, empty yogurt containers “just in case.”

We headed across the paddock to the south of Casa Jones, dogs joyously bounding in front of us, thrilled that at last the humans weren’t going to spend another day hanging around the house.

Our destination was Mountain Trail that threads through the bush and up a long hill.

At the top there are three meadows, each separated by trees.

Initially we thought we might find some gourmet Chanterelle mush­ rooms we had discovered growing on the property two years ago.

Alas, there were none to be found.

Actually Laura did find the stubs of a couple poking their heads above the duff on the forest floor.

“Someone’s been eating them,” she said, “Well let’s go see if there are any blueberries.”

So we pushed our way through a tangle of balsam tree branches until we came out onto the first meadow.

We found just a few blueberries but as we moved uphill Laura shouted: “Come up here. There are lots.”

Indeed there were.

Once the lower meadow was cleaned we walked to the next one where we discovered bushes teeming with berries.

“Have we hit the mother­lode yet?”

I asked.

“We will have to wait until we enter the main part of the meadow before I

can answer that,” she replied.

She was correct. Right in the middle of the largest of the three meadows is a blueberry patch about 20 feet across.

One glance at all the bushes bursting with blue and we now knew we’d found the motherload.

The bushes were fecund with berries.

I went down on my knees to pick.

I’d no sooner complete one patch when I’d merely turn slightly to the right or left only to discover more blue, lots of blue.

Laura was in heaven. Aside from riding horses, and gardening, her favourite outdoor activity is picking berries; and this summer, unlike the previous couple, has produced bumper crops.

Saskatoons, blueberries, and soon raspberries have not suffered from late frost, have enjoyed the heat and before that the rain. Yum! Laura had brought her cell phone

and she decided to call back to the house to see if son, Doug, could bring a couple of bottles of water (silly us. Didn’t pack any for our walk figuring we wouldn’t be long.

Hah!).

Doug, meanwhile, was freaking out.

“I have to work today at 1o’clock!”

The time was 12:15 p.m.. I had forgotten that he told me about his date with work the previous night.

“Get the quad and meet your father on the trail,” Laura commanded.

I ran. I’m actually amazed that I didn’t trip on roots or tumble down the hill and I tried to speed towards the sound of the quad engine that was increasing in volume as it got closer.

Doug met me; I climbed onboard and the wild ride began.

It was like a scene from some action movie: quad bouncing along the trail with me hanging on for dear life, both of us ducking overhanging

branches, branches that the ice many months ago had bent and that I hadn’t got around to clearing.

We tore long the trail such that when we came to any bumps, we were airborne.

If I’d had long hair, it would have been streaming out behind me.

We arrived back at the house and dove into the car that I drove like a bat out hell to get Doug to his job on time which I did.

Whew!

I drove home very slowly, savouring the view as the sun played peek­a­boo from behind clouds.

I have never driven the quad along our trails anywhere nearly as fast as that trip from the ‘back 40’ to our house.

I didn’t know it could even be done.

Later that night I asked Doug: “Er…how fast were we going, son?”

A slow smile creased his face: “You don’t want to know, Dad.”

By Leith Dunick – TB Source he Tragically Hip have been there every step of the way throughout my adult life.

I’ve seen a lot of concerts, but no band more than the 13 times I’ve seen the Hip. First introduced to them by a high school friend in Halifax, over the years a Tragically Hip album release date became a holiday celebration. I’d race to the record store as it opened, peel back the plastic and spend the day – or the week – devouring it.

Needless to say, like many Canadian music fans, I was stunned and saddened to learn that lead singer Gord Downie had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. It still seems surreal. I was lucky enough to score tickets to the Hip’s Winnipeg show earlier this month, a memory I’ll treasure forever.

On Saturday they’ll play what’s expected to be their final show in Kingston, Ont., where it all began. The concert will be streamed live at Marina Park at 8:30 p.m.

In honour of their farewell, I put together a list of my top 50 favourite Tragically Hip songs. Here’s the first 18 songs on the list, the rest can be found on tbnewswatch.com.

1. AT THE HUNDREDTH MERIDIAN Album: Fully Completely (1992) Song notes: The song’s title refers to the

imaginary line that divides Western Canada from the east – where the great plains begin. On stage Gord Downie would often stop midway through and go on one of his famous stream­of­consciousness rants, a frenzied finish to follow. The song also introduced a new generation to blues great Ry Cooder, who the narrator announces he wants to sing his eulogy.

Favourite lyric: “It would seem to me, I remember every single f**king thing I know.”

2. NAUTICAL DISASTER Album: Day for Night (1994) Song notes: It’s one of two tracks the Hip performed on Saturday Night Live in 1995, their appearance a condition former cast member and Kingston, Ont. native Dan Aykroyd insisted upon in agreeing to return to do a guest spot on the NBC show. In the Canadian rock history book, Have Not Been the Same, Downie says the haunting song is about the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck.

Favourite lyric: “Settled in, into the pocket of a lighthouse on some rocky socket, off the coast of France, dear.”

3. NEW ORLEANS IS SINKING Album: Up to Here (1989) Song notes: Likely their most played

song on Canadian radio, the song was 16th on CBC Radio’s 2005 series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version. After Hurricane Katrina laid waste to New Orleans in 2005, the song was temporarily pulled from several American stations. On stage, it became famous for the extended jam played midway through by the band, often a testing ground for new songs, including Nautical Disaster and Ahead by a Century.

Favourite lyric: “My memory is muddy, what’s this river that I’m in? New Orleans is sinking man and I don’t want to swim.”

4. AHEAD BY A CENTURY Album: Trouble at the Henhouse (1996) Song notes: Nominated for best Canadian single at the 1997 Juno Awards, according to Wikipedia it’s the best charted song in the Tragically Hip’s three­decade history. It’s a nostalgic look at young love, a recurring theme for the band over the years.

Favourite lyric: “First thing we’d climb a tree and maybe then we’d talk. Or sit silently and listen to our thoughts.”

BOBCAYGEON Album: Phantom Power (1998) Song notes: Named after the tiny town of Bobcaygeon, Ont. – but not inspired by it – the song details the narrator’s disgust at the Nazi­fueled Christie Pits riots that struck Toronto in 1933 and the simpler small­town life afforded in a place like the title town. Gord Downie has said any town could have fit the bill, but he chose Bobcaygeon because its name “rhymes with constellation … sort of.” The song won the 2000 Juno Award for single of the year.

Favourite lyric: “Till the man they couldn’t hang, stepped to the mic and sang, and their voice rang with that Aryan twang.”

7. LITTLE BONES Album: Road Apples (1991) Song notes:Legend has it the song was crafted in New Orleans and Little Bones is a cat in Timothy Findlay’s novel The Last of the Crazy People. On the 2004 Yer Favourites DVD, at the end of the song Downie screams, “If I get no more use out of my voice than that, I would love to find my tiny, little calico cat.”

Favourite lyric: “Baby eat this chicken slow, it’s full of all them little bones.”

8. 38 YEARS OLD Album: Up to Here (1989) Song notes: A fictionalized retelling of a prison break from Millhaven Institution, the narrator’s brother the lone hometown shame of the dozen who escaped.

In reality, 14, not 12, inmates broke free.

Favourite lyrics: “He’s 38 years old, never kissed a girl.”

9. COURAGE Album: Fully Completely (1992) Song notes: The song was inspired by MacLennan’s novel, The Watch that Ends the Night, “Interpreted by some people to be about someone’s contemplations of suicide,” according to canadianbands.com.

Favourite lyric: “Courage, my word, it didn’t come, it doesn’t matter.”

10. SCARED Album: Day for Night (1994) Song notes:The song references the Nazi desire to pillage Russia of its artworks in the Second World War, but also delves into the origins of marketing focus groups. According to thehipmuseum.com, Gord Downie often introduces the song by mentioning a “lighthouse keeper or encyclopedia salesman whose services were no longer needed.”

Favourite lyric: “When the Nazis find the whole place dark, they’ll think God’s left the museum for good.”

11. BOOTS OR HEARTS Album: Up to Here (1989) Song notes: A bitter break­up song if there ever was one. When things fall apart, like boots or hearts, they really fall apart.

Favourite lyrics: “I feel I’ve stepped out of the wilderness, all squint­eyed and confused. But even babies raised by wolves, they know exactly when they’ve been used.”

12. POETS Album: Phantom Power (1998) Song notes: A No. 1 hit in Canada that stayed at the

top of the RPM alternative chart for a dozen weeks, the song touches on the dangers of mass farming and pornography and is critical of environmental and social critics – the poets – who talk tough but accom­ plish little.

Favourite lyric: “Lava flowing in superfarmer’s direction, he’s been getting reprieve from the heat in the frozen food section.”

13. MY MUSIC AT WORK Album: Music at Work (2000) Song notes: In the video for the song, Downie is an office worker with an apparent double life – he’s also the lead singer of a band named The Filters, a stark contrast from the rest of the workplace drones he sets out to reinvigorate. It hit No. 2 on the Canadian charts.

The song’s title was lifted from the slogan of a Toronto rock radio station.

Favourite lyric: “Everything is bleak. It’s the middle of the night. You’re all alone and the dummies might be right.”

14. LOCKED IN THE TRUNK OF A CAR Album: Fully Completely (1992) Song notes: According to canadianbands.com, the song is “sort of a fictional first­hand account of a serial killer from his eyes.”

Favourite lyric: “It’s a cool, sweet kinda place where the coppers won’t spot it.”

15. VACCINATION SCAR Album: In Between Evolution (2004) Song notes: Like many songs on the album, Vaccination Scar has an anti­war message directed at the U.S. involvement in Iraq, comparing its execution at one point to the infamous Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

The title refers to the smallpox vaccination scar found on the upper left arms of millions of Canadians born in the 1960s and early 1970s.

Favourite lyric: “The sky looks threatened, heading home in the dust, singing, ‘Life is for getting, good enough for the frivolous.”

17. FIFTY­MISSION CAP Album: Fully Completely (1992) Song notes: The Hip’s classic hockey song, it tells the tale of former Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Bill Barilko, who scored the Stanley Cup­winning goal in 1951, then was killed in a plane crash that summer.

His fate was a mystery for 11 years.

Favourite lyric: “They didn’t win another till 1962, the year he was discovered.”

18. BLOW AT HIGH DOUGH Album: Up to Here (1989) Song notes: According to hipmuseum.com, “Don’t blow at high dough” is a saying Gord Downie’s grand­ mother used, suggesting one shouldn’t get ahead of one’s self “or attempt to walk before you’ve crawled.”

The song was also the theme song of the CBC show Made in Canada.

Favourite lyric:“They shot a movie once, in my hometown. Everybody was in it, for miles around.”

By Doug Diaczuk – TB Source hether it’s the rides, the food, the entertainment, or just a fami­ ly tradition, the CLE continues to draw crowds in the thousands.

The CLE wrapped up Sunday evening with a bang, finishing off the day with a spectacular fireworks display.

Organizers said that despite some wet weather in the opening days, they still saw strong crowds throughout the weekend.

“Given the little rain we had during the week, people have been coming through,” said Basil Lychowyd, the CLE Fair chair. “I think we’re going to have a great crowd out here tonight.”

The popular summer fair usually draws up to 55,000 people over the five days and Lychowyd anticipated they’d see a similar turnout this year.

“We’ve been hitting more of our marks,” he said. “It’s edging towards that way. It all depends on what we have today and I think we will be there.”

For many families, coming out to the CLE every year is a family tradition. Nine­year­old Emillie Dagenias and her 12­year­old sister, Brie­anna, come every year and the best part is, of course, the rides.

“My favorite ride is the G­Force,” Emillie said. “I like fast rides and when people laugh, then you know it’s going to be fun.”

Emillie and Brie­anna said that the rides are always fun and the food is always good, but most importantly, it’s about being there with family.

“I think the best part is just having fun and being able to spend time with your family,” Brie­anna said.

For four­year­old Veronica, who came to the fair with her mother and grandmother, it was a little more difficult to choose her favorite part.

“I love everything,” she said.

Lychowyd said that it’s great to see all the kids out and enjoying the fair and even the adults too.

“The kids all love the rides,” he said. “The adults like a little bit of music and they like to look at the animals too, just like the kids in the petting zoo.”

Lychowyd added that the CLE has become a tradition for so many families because it’s a must, just like the opening day of fishing season.

“As we grow up, we change our thoughts, but as adults we bring out kids and that’s how it’s become a tradition,” he said.

By Nicole Dixon – TB Source ore than 4,000 people attended this year’s craft beer festival and organizers say there’s no doubt BrewHa! will be back for round three.

Northerner's love for beer filled the festival area of Prince Arthur’s Landing over the weekend with thousands of suds lovers who indulged in more than 60 varieties of craft beer at the two­day BrewHa! Craft Beer Festival.

BrewHa! co­chair Jon Hendel last Saturday said the popularity of craft beer has grown over the past few years and education is key.

“We are focusing a lot on education this year,” Hendel said. “We have people who really have an understanding of the history, the present and the future of the beer industry.”

For the first time the festival featured an educational stage, which included topics such as the history, craft beer characteristics and the brewing process.

Hendel said the festival’s purpose is to expand Thunder Bay’s understanding of beer.

He added that education is important because more people care about where their food and drinks come from, where the ingre­ dients come from and why we should question are food.

“We are coming back to our grandparent’s generation where we understand that when we buy local the money stays in our commu­ nity and our economy thrives.”

Organizers have also added an environ­ mentally friendly element to this year’s

festival.

There were recycling bins at every garbage container throughout the festival area that recycled all materials not just plastics.

Hendel said this year the festival put a ban on styrofoam, so no vender could serve food on products that weren’t recyclable.

“We are the only (festival) who have done that in Thunder Bay,” Hendel said.

He added BrewHa! also used biodegrad­ able cups, electronic ticketing and each person was given a real glass that could be rinsed in the rinsing stations and brought home.

With the success of the festival last year organizers expanded this year’s capacity and brought in more brewers.

More than 4,000 people attended this year’s event compared to last year’s 2,500.

Hendel said festival­goers can expect another craft beer festival next year during the first week of August.

Toronto­based beer blogger Robin LeBlanc sampled some Northern beers for her book The Ontario Craft Beer Guide.

“Thunder Bay is fiercely loyal to its own community branding and the local name,” LeBlanc said.

“It’s fantastic to see how much better beer is embraced here, I’m not surprised in the slightest because it’s local.”

LeBlanc said Sleeping Giant Brewery has some incredible beers in the region and it’s definitely a beer that will appeal to those hardcore experts but also for people who are new to local beer.

She added that festival like BrewHa! gives people the opportunity to experiment and see what else is out there in terms of beer.

Weldon seeking gold again PARALYMPICS

By Doug Diaczuk – TB Source ocal Paralympian Robbi Weldon is aiming for a podium finish next month in Rio, and hopes it will match the gold she brought home from the 2012 London Games.

Weldon and teammate, Audrey Lemieux, will be competing in the 25­kilometre time trial and the 95­ kilometre road race during the Rio Paralympic Games, which will be taking place between Sept. 7 and 18.

“My goal and our team goal is the podium for the time trial,” Weldon said. “We are really focused on the time trial because it is a race against the clock. It really shows how much power we have on the tandem.”

Originally from Thunder Bay and now living in Ottawa, Weldon is a para­skier and has been a para­cyclist since 2010. At the age of 15, Weldon was diagnosed with Stargardt disease, a genetic form of macular degeneration that affected her central vision.

Weldon has competed as a Paralympian in the Winter Games in 2010 and 2014, as well as the 2012 Summer Games in London, where she won gold in the women’s road race with pilot Lynn Bessette.

Weldon and Lemieux have been training since being teamed up together in July 2015. They have already shared a lot of success together, winning bronze at the World Cup in South Africa last September.

Weldon addedthey have had great training camps in California and more than a month of training and races in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, placing fifth in two World Cup races in Europe.

We’ve done a lot of work over the winter. A big part of me moving to Ottawa was so we could train on a weekly basis and that has shown great results in Europe and nationals. We’ve had really great races here in Ottawa.”

Training in the Ottawa, Montreal, and Gatineau Park area has also been key to Weldon’s strategy, providing her and Lemieux with a lot of hill climbing to prepare for the road race

course in Rio. “The road race is very much strategy,” Weldon said. “We saw in the Olympic men’s and women’s race that it is a very technical course, with very long, steep climbs, which is extremely difficult with a tandem.

The amount of percentage we are hitting is 15 per cent on some of the climbs. And the descent probably going anywhere from 80 to 100 kilo­ metres per hour.”

Weldon added that there have been several crashes on the course, but she

said that Lemieux is one of the best para­cycling pilots in the world.

“I have 100 per cent trust in her driving ability,” she said.

Support from Team Canada and Cycling Canada has been phenom­ enal, Weldon said, and she is excited to see 12 para­cycling athletes competing at the 2016 Rio Games.

St. Louis Blues d­man encouraged by more ice time during NHL postseason this spring NHL

The 27­year­old, playing his first full season for the St. Louis Blues, saw action in all three rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs, after dressing for just 40 games during the regular season.

That’s a great sign the Blues, who had a crowded and talented blue­line in 2015­16, have plenty of confidence

in Bortuzzo, who they acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2015 for fellow defenceman Ian Cole.

“It was a great year. Fortunately for myself I’ve been on two pretty good hockey teams here. Sometimes that hurts you coming into the lineup, but it was nice to get in. I played in all three playoff series this year and we had a lot of good team success,” said Bortuzzo, who collected two goals and one assist with the Blues this past season and has seven goals and 18 assists in 166 career NHL games.

The former Fort William North Star, who this season will be joined by ex­ junior teammate and close friend Carter Hutton in the Gateway to the West, said getting to the Western Conference final was a great achieve­ ment, but the loss to the San Jose Sharks still stings.

It was disappointing, Bortuzzo said.

“Any time you lose out it’s emotion­ ally tough, but any time you make it that far there’s a little more stink to it,” he said.

“Everyone knows the Western Conference is so deep and talented.

Our first two rounds were wars. We didn’t get some breaks, San Jose played well at the right time and that’s sports. But we did a lot of great things and we can carry it into next year.”

It’ll be a different Blues team that opens the 2016­17 campaign on Oct. 12 against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Forward Troy Bouwer and goalie Brian Elliott left for Calgary, while captain David Backes shipped out to Boston.

Bortuzzo admitted the losses were tough, but thinks the team can overcome them.

“Like most teams you’re going to have to make those adjustments. We lost a big piece in our captain, but having said that we have a lot of young core guys and a lot of talent and a lot of veteran guys who have been around a long time to step up and take on bigger roles,” he said.

“Hopefully that’ll lead to better things moving forward.”

The addition of Hutton is great, he added.

“Obviously he’s done great things in Nashville and we had a lot of fun playing for the North Stars. I was just a 15­year­old and he was the veteran, teaching me the ropes,” Bortuzzo said. “But it definitely makes my job easier as a defenceman having a guy like that back there.

Olympic rower Parsons, NHLer Busniuk among this year’s inductees T H U N D E R B AY

ormer Olympic rower Liam Parsons heads this year’s class of inductees into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

Joining Parsons at the Sept. 24 ceremony will be boxer Kathy Williams, hockey’s Ron Busniuk and Fort Frances football star Jeff Treftlin.

Going in in the professional builder category is late wrestling coach Todd Hinds, while Jim Johnson gets the nod in the volun­ teer builders’ category.

Parsons began his career with the Thunder Bay Rowing Club in the 1990s and won bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Williams claimed provincial and national amateur titles in the ring during the 1990s and early 2000s.

Busniuk spent more than two decades in hockey, winning back­to­back Calder Cup titles with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs and Cincinnati Swords in 1972 and 1973.

Busniuk played six NHL games with the JIM JOHNSON Buffalo Sabres in the mid­‘70s, and spent five seasons in the World Hockey Association with Minnesota, New England and Edmonton, retiring in 1978.

He returned home to Thunder Bay and coached the Thunder Bay Twins to Allen Cup titles in 1984 and 1985.

Treftlin spend eight seasons in the Canadian Football League, winning a Grey Cup title in 1989 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

As a wrestling coach, Hinds served with Canada’s national women’s team, helping develop Olympic medal­winning athletes.

He died in 2015.

The late Johnson was a long­time minor league coach who helped found the Thunder Bay Kings program and was instru­ mental in the return of hockey to Lakehead University. Johnson was also the father of former NHLers Greg and Ryan Johnson.

Condorelli instead settled for fourth in the men’s 100­metre freestyle race, 0.3 seconds behind American Nathan Adrian, who captured bronze.

Australia’s Kyle Chalmers won gold in a time of 47.58, 0.22 ahead of Belgium’s Pieter Timers.

"I know I don't have the same back half as these guys do," Condorelli told the CBC. "I'm used to going out fast."

"I just went for it — had fun with it."

It was a personal best for Condorelli.

"I'm not too worried about it. It's my first Olympics just here enjoying the moment, yeah it kind of sucks, I wanted to be top three but there's another Olympics in me," Condorelli told the network.
