Bridge fire tops 2013 Want to Sell?

By Leith Dunick – TB Source hoosing the year’s top 10 stories wasn’t easy in 2013. There were plenty of candidates and lots to keep news junkies on their toes.

Without further ado, here are the 10 stories we thought grabbed the biggest headlines over the past 12 months: A spectacular blaze led to the closure of the James Street Swing Bridge in October. The century-old structure went up in a ball of flames and CN railroad officials, who own the bridge, say it could be months before the span, linking the city and Fort William First Nation, opens again. Train traffic over the bridge has resumed. Local leaders are looking into the possible replacement of the bridge.

Thunder Bay Police came under fire from a group tying itself to the Internet hacker group Anonymous. In January the group threatened to reveal embarrassing and potentially damaging inside information about police officers if TBPS didn’t step up its efforts to solve an alleged racially motivated sexual assault of a First Nations woman that took place the month before.

The Thunder Bay Power Generating Station found new life in November when the province ended more than a year of speculation and announced the soon-to-be-mothballed plant would be converted to biomass and operate as a peak power plant. The province had threatened to close the facility rather than spend $400 million to convert it to natural gas.

The much ballyhooed Ring of Fire project showed it wasn’t invincible in November when Cliffs Natural Resources announced the U.S.-based company was suspending development of a massive chromite deposit. Cliffs officials said too many obstacles stood between them and realizing the development. The province said the Ring of Fire is not dead, but it

Consumers flock to Boxing Day sales

By Matt Vis – TB Source ith Christmas barely in the rearview mirror, consumers got a chance to cross the last items off their holiday wish lists.

Across the city, hundreds of people marked their post-Christmas morning by taking part in the bargain hunting display of commercialism grandeur that has become Boxing Day. One of the more popular destinations was Thunder Bay’s lone Future Shop location, where people were lined up in advance of the electronics retailer’s 6 a.m. opening.

Early risers People at the front of the line, which grew to be upward of a couple hundred people by the time the doors opened, arrived in the parking lot hours before the store’s opening.

“I got here at like 3:15 a.m.,” said

Carmine Caruso, who was sitting in the pole position in line.

“I think they have some deals online that are different than in the store. I’m not sure if they’re the same, but (going in the store) you get it right away.”

By accounts of experienced Boxing Day shoppers, the lines were not as long as compared to years past.

While a flurry of die-hard shoppers had marked their territory, the last 15 minutes prior to opening saw a flurry of arrivals that tripled the crowd.

All in all, it was not the worst that many had seen.

“Usually I come here and the line is all the way out to Chapters and it’s ridiculous, but it’s not that bad this year,” Caruso said.

Michelle Poshtar was experiencing her first taste of Boxing Day shopping after spending a few years working in retail on the day after Christmas.

She thinks the promotion of other shopping days, as well as online options, might be decreasing the appeal for lining up in the cold to be the first through the doors.

“I think with Black Friday stuff stores are realizing that people have already spent money before Boxing Day so they’re going to be doing more sales for Black Friday too,” Poshtar said.

Multiple stops She added she was planning on going deal hunting at the Intercity Shopping Centre, as well as a few other businesses across town on Thursday.

For Caruso, he only had one other plan for the day after he was done checking out the store's camera selection.

“I’m going to go to bed after this,” he said.

“I’ve been up all night. I’m tired.”

With council having to meet almost weekly behind closed doors, city clerk John Hannam is looking to see if there are ways to improve that record and bring more reports to public sessions.

“So we can support public confidence and business being done in an open manner,” Hannam said.

While the last two aren't likely to be public, Hannam said there might be ways under the Municipal Act to make it so council won't have to go in camera on every property matter.

It might be as simple as having a confidential memo sent to council instead.

“A report of that nature might be able to go to open sessions,” he said.

That wouldn't include things like property prices though as it might undermine the competitive bidding

process when the city puts land up for sale Hannam said.

Mayor Keith Hobbs said he wants to see council meet behind closed doors less.

“We spend I think an inordinate amount of time in closed session however we have had a lot of legal issues,” Hobbs said.

The flood of May 2012 and closing agreements on the hotel and condominium project on the waterfront were just a few reasons that this term of council have had regular closed sessions, Hobbs said.

Change our parking ban he holiday snow ensured a White Christmas – not that it was ever in doubt.

It also showcased how inconsiderate some vehicle owners can be.

Unlike other cities, which ticket and tow vehicles parked on city streets during and after snowstorms, the City of Thunder Bay appears content to simply plow around.

It’s time the city adopted a different tact.

Rather than automatically enacting calendar parking restrictions once winter weather settles in, the city should only put them in place when snowfall dictates.

In Halifax, for example, the municipality issues a snowfall warning and issues overnight parking bans on all city streets until the snow is cleared.

But there should also be a zero-tolerance policy when snowfall dictates the restrictions take effect.

Fines, which currently stand at $35 ($45 if not paid within five business days), should be increased. Vehicles that impede snow removal should be ticketed and towed, at the owners’ expense.

The city is looking at ways to cut its costs. Having to return to clear streets on several occasions does not help the cause. Forcing other drivers to navigate around piles of snow on city streets can be perilous and lead to collisions. It’s time to get tough.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR More openness please To the editor: hen deciding on how to handle the decision on how to make city council more open you need to ask yourself who you work for and what right you have to keep information from them.

While any discussion about items that may be before the courts should certainly be discussed in camera, there is no other business that truly qualifies.

Contracts should only remain confidential during the bidding process but once that is completed the voters are entitled to know where the money goes and any business that can't live with that can look elsewhere.

As far as labour negotiations go it may be wise to formulate your position in private but once both parties have submitted their proposals then all should be public knowledge so that voters will know what is going on and can comment if they wish.

Open government is the key to the democratic process, it's not always pretty or convenient but it is necessary if democracy is what we truly believe in.

Too often meetings are held in private with so-called "stakeholders" and the voters in general are left out of the decision.

Do you really need to be told that the only stakeholders that matter are the voters and taxpayers, anyone else is solely there for their own self interest, however nice a package they may present it in.

Barriers required To the editor: think it's time 24-hour Mac's Convenience Stores installed counter-barriers to protect their lone midnight employees from injury during robberies.

Some late-night retailers are already leading the way. For example, there is a Mac’s on Red River Road across the street from a 24-hour Shell Station.

To protect their lone midnight employee from physical violence during late-night robberies Shell has taken the initiative to install a counterbarrier inside of their store.

Alternatively, Mac’s refuses to install barriers, leaving their vulnerable employee exposed to the risks inherent in this industry. When two similar late-night retailer operations conduct independent risk assessments, we expect both to implement similar safety measures as a result. However, this is not the case.

These two employees can see each other across the street during their midnight shifts, and it disturbs me to

know this gross disparity is commonplace across Ontario. Shell sets a precedent for late-night retailer safety in our city and I challenge Mac’s to take this opportunity to meet their standard.

I am the first one to commend Mac's for investing heavily in safety and security, implementing crime deterrence features and taking crime prevention seriously... but despite all of their efforts their employees continue to experience violence in the workplace.

This is a regular occurrence, a running joke in our city. This safety concern has not been adequately addressed and it is only a matter of time before someone loses their life. I would like to see our municipality's intergovernmental liaison advocate for a better standard of protection for late-night retail employees here in Thunder Bay, and across Ontario.

A review of the regulations within the Occupational Health & Safety Act is necessary. Ontario does not currently have a specific "working alone" regulation, or prescriptive regulations for late-night retailers.

This is unacceptable. Thunder Bay Mac's locations have experienced by far Mac's highest rate of crime in Ontario. If anything is ever going to change, I think it must start here, in our city. We must be the change we want to see in the world.

Gas shortage frightening To the editor: s I write this, the last of the fuel in Terrace Bay is being pumped. It is reported that there is no fuel in Marathon, Nipigon, Schreiber, Manitouage or any point in between.

So those drivers who may have to drive to find fuel around here, can't drive that far. It may be an inconvenience to the city but to people travelling home towards the east it is a major problem.

It is also problematic for those of us who live in the small North Shore communities. Great timing oil boys, this should endear you and the rail roads to the public even more seeing as it’s Christmas rush time and all.

Oh well, I guess we can snowmobile safely on the Trans Canada for awhile.

Wait a minute, you need gas for that.

Respect the dead To the editor: hy do you insist on identifying that female murder victim as part of the sex trade?

I find that so offensive and unnecessary.

Shannon Hogan was a woman, she could have worked in the oil fields or as a hairdresser, I know that would not have been mentioned.

Is there something titillating to mentioning sex trade that you enjoy?

It’s sad. A woman lost her life, viciously, by a male who chose to do that yet you seem to feel the important part of the story is her occupation. It doesn’t justify killing her, doesn't make her less a person, doesn't make her less dead. Maybe Santa will bring you some maturity for Christmas. I certainly hope so.

Stop the bailouts To the editor: ’m writing this letter to you to express my dissatisfaction with the provincial government.

I think it is very disgusting how Buchanan Forest Products held the provincial government hostage in Terrace Bay. Twenty-four million dollars, which the province forgave the company, is just a drop in the bucket, when you factor all the unpaid stumpage fees.

The company also had the nerve to get the mayors of the northern communities where he has saw mills to beg the provincial government for consideration in wood rights.

I feel bad for these communities, but does the provincial government and the taxpayers of this province need to fund Buchanan’s ventures again? There is a old saying fool me once shame on you.

Same old Christmas Do the holidays need new traditions to spice things up?

By J.R. Shermack Special to TB Source ometimes it seems like Christmas might be getting a little “same old, same old.”

All those valued family traditions can lose their magic over time and we find ourselves looking for ways to refresh our holiday experience.

At our house we thought about changing things up for Christmas this year – you know, try something new and exciting.

There was some talk about spending a couple of days at a wilderness resort enjoying an oldfashioned country Christmas.

Some misguided souls suggested a Toronto Noel but I’m glad we passed on that one – we could have experienced the ice storm firsthand and spent the holidays with Rob Ford.

I am a bit of a traditionalist myself but I was willing to go along with “Xmas Nouveau” even though I would probably pout through all 12 days of Christmas.

But in the end we once again found ourselves chowing down together with family and friends, sharing our favourite foods around the same old table.

A roast turkey with all the trimmings is a pretty decent default dinner and we happily tucked into the bird, the stuffing, the baked ham and several savoury side dishes.

The 19-year-old, a student at the time at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School, ignited a firestorm of Aboriginal outcries when he laid the accusation.

Police accepted his apology and decided not to press mischief charges.

No one was injured after a crane collapsed at the stillunder-construction consolidated court house on the city's south side. The twisted crane appeared to have tipped over, its boom crashing into the lower section of the new building.

Brodie Street was closed as officials ensured the scene was safe and the crane removed. The Ministry of Labour is investigating.

Bob Rae took the lead for Matawa Tribal Council's negotiations with the province over the Ring of Fire. The former Ontario Premier and interim federal Liberal leader stepped down as MP for Toronto Centre a month after taking on the position to focus on the negotiations full-time.

A seven-year-old boxer was expected to make a full recovery after it was attacked by a pack of wolves in Kakabeka.

The dog's owner chased the wolves away with a stick, then carried the dog on his shoulders back home. The dog suffered punctures and lacerations to his hind legs.

Travis Vaughn Cutfeet, 30, was stabbed to death while walking down May Street near Violet Street in early May. Police arrested 35-year-old Shawn Joseph Henderson, who knew Cutfeet, and charged him with second-degree murder.

The matter is still before the courts.

A local councillor worried that the city's south side would turn into a ghetto if an alcohol management program expanded. Coun. Joe Virdiramo made the comment and was the only one to vote against the Shelter House plan. An overabundance of social services in the area might create a ghetto he said.

Fort William First Nation declared a state of emergency after flooding forced up to 170 people from their homes.

Around 60 millimetres of rain in 24 hours washed out roads in the area, especially around Squaw Bay and Carp River.

The city took in 150 evacuees from Kashechewan after the remote first nation community flooded. Thunder Bay was one of several cities in the province to take people in after a state of emergency was declared. They were in the city for about a week before 260 people arrived from Attiwapiskat.

The annual Folklore Festival broke attendance records within two hours of opening the gates. With 16 nations and 21 food booths on display thousands flocked to the Fort William Gardens to take in sights, smells and sounds from around the globe.

A massive blaze destroyed Rizzo's Cabinets on Alloy Place. Police blocked off portions of Central Avenue and Alloy Place as family members watched and sobbed as the business, started by Nicola Rizzo in 1971, burned to the ground.

A local soup kitchen served its one millionth meal in May but it was no cause for celebration. The Dew Drop Inn has been serving a mid-day meal in the city every day since it opened its doors in February of 1981. In 2005 the kitchen served 36,000 meals. Last year that number climbed to 59,000 and was expected to serve 3,000 more than that in 2013.

No one was injured. An investigation found that locate lines were painted in the wrong location. No charges would be laid, but fines were handed out to the company responsible for burying and marking the lines.

Police added fresh charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, against a man accused of heading a criminal organization. John Harry Tsekouras was originally charged with an alleged role in a major drug trafficking network in 2012. He was released on bail. Cliffs Natural Resources stopped work on its environmental assessment saying it had taken the process as far as it could go without the province stepping in. The company said delays in approvals, uncertainty in land surface rights and unfinished agreements for the suspension. It would later suspend all of its activity in the Ring of Fire and is set to close its Thunder Bay office by the end of the year.

The list of alleged sexual assault victims could climb to 100 people after a Thunder Bay man was charged in June. It is alleged that Jeff Paxton sexually assaulted young boys while a bible camp counsellor over a nearly 20 year period. Police put out a public call for other possible victims to come forward in the case, stating they expect there could be numerous other victims out there. The matter is still before the courts.

The body of Larry Larivee was discovered a week after he disappeared after diving into the MacKenzie River. OPP had halted an extensive underwater search for the Thunder Bay man before he was discovered near the spot where he dove on June 19. It was the start of what proved to be a deadly summer on area waterways, with several more deaths occuring in August on Lake Superior and the Kaministiquia River.

A hotel that stood in the city for more than 100 years was demolished, years after it had been condemned. The abandoned Empire Hotel had been vacant for years after fire code violations shut it down. Part of the building collapsed in June, forcing the city to issue an emergency demolition order.

Joseph Wesley pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of 65-year-old Adam Yellowhead. Yellowhead's body was found in August of 2012 in a grassy area at the end of Field Street. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 30. His death was surrounded in controversy when police sent out an email saying the “Fresh Breath Killer” had been caught.

Domestic violence rates in the city have doubled in the past eight years. More than 670 people were charged in 2,300 cases of domestic violence in 2012. The statistics were enough to have the Thunder Bay Police Service announce a new six-member Domestic Violence Unit to handle the rise in cases full time.

Thunder Bay Police investigated the city's second homicide of the year when Shannon Ashliegh Marie Hogan, 30, was killed following an incident in the Lake Street area July 16 in the early morning hours. Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say she was the victim of a violent assault. Her family ssaid Hogan should be remembered as a bright, spirited young woman.

The Texas driver was later charged with careless driving.

The jury for a coroner's inquest into the death of Gustavo Argueta, 24, made nine recommendations July 31 after several hours of deliberation. Argueta died in June 2011 when a boom lift he was working on near the Mackenzie River bridge tipped over. Among the nine recommendations, five of them deal with better training for young workers using elevated work platforms.

Members of the Thunder Bay Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 193 had been without a contract for the past two years. A provincial arbitrator awarded them wage parity with police between Jan.1, 2011 to the end of 2014. The award means a 2.75 per cent and 3.1 per cent annual wage increase.

Three people died in two separate drowning incidents in one August weekend. The body of Kevin Spade, 32, was recovered by OPP divers on Aug. 19 in Lake Superior after a cliff-diving adventure gone wrong two days earlier. Marlene Fox, 26, had succumbed to her injuries sustained in the same incident earlier at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. In a separate incident, police also recovered the body of Jordan Desfosses, 31, of Peace River, Alta. on Aug. 19.

A $3 million lawsuit from three residents of O'Connor Point was in court Aug. 23 over the fate of a beach they argue has been the source of major headaches. Lawyer Samantha Filipovic, who was also a plaintiff, said drinking, noise, property damage and even threats have come from people using the beach, which is the municipality of Shuniah's property.

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission announced Aug. 7 that Doug Murray will take over as CEO. Murray worked in the pulp and paper industry for more than 30 years, including the post of general manager of Resolute Forest Products in Thunder Bay.

A 42-year-old man was saved by his miniature schnauzer Spyro from a bear while he was camping at Sandbar Provincial Park over the August long weekend. Trevor Miller spent hours trying to escape a bear with his two dogs, Spyro and Jack Russell mix Puzzle to run for the lake. It resulted in a standoff where Spyro stepped between Miller and the bear and sacrificed his life.

The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service named Terry Armstrong as its new chief on Aug. 16. Armstrong succeeded Robert Herman, who was the acting police chief since January.

Armstrong spent most of his policing career with the OPP in Northwestern Ontario.

City officials confirmed on Aug. 27 that the moose at the Chippewa Wildlife Exhibit had died the night before. The care of the moose was the focus of media attention earlier in the summer after park users began complaining on social media that the animal appeared to be malnourished and mistreated.

No more than a week after a demolition order was posted on the window of the former Lyceum Theatre, the 103-year-old building was given new life during an Aug. 12 council meeting.

After an engineering report stated the building is still structurally sound, the city decided not to tear the Lyceum down.

The inaugural Dirty Girls Mud Run was a roaring success, exceeding organizer's expectations. About 750 women, dressed in costumes from tutus to superheroes, ran a five-kilometre obstacle course Aug. 10 outside This Old Barn in Murillo that required teams to climb walls, crawl through thick cold mud, dark tunnels and slide down greasy poles. A statement of claim filed on behalf of Grann, her husband and children states the police conducted a negligent investigation and malicious prosecution against Grann. Premier Kathleen Wynne announced on Sept. 2 in Kenora that the province will commit up to $2 million a year to keep the Experimental Lakes Area open. The research facility had been threatened with closure after the federal government decided to withdraw funding earlier in the year.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre asked the city to include its grounds within Thunder Bay's smoking bylaw, which council backed 10-3 on Sept. 30. Although the hospital property had been smoke-free since it opened in 2004, the ban could only be enforced through provincial legislation if someone smoked within nine metres of the building’s entrances.

Lakehead University's law school, the province’s first new law school in 44 years, opened on Sept. 4. University officials, First Nations leaders and the premier of Ontario welcomed the school’s charter class at its new home in the former Port Arthur Collegiate Institute.

A cyclist was killed after allegedly being intentionally struck by a van in an Algoma Street parking lot on Oct. 1. The cyclist, 38-year-old Richard Terrance Vrastak, succumbed to his injuries a couple of days later. The driver, Sheldon Mark Yesno, was charged with second-degree murder. The accused is the son of Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Harvey Yesno.

The hottest topic at city council was the removal of 11 tamarack trees from Mohawk Crescent. Complaints were brought to council, claiming needles from the trees were resulting in property damage. Numerous councillors were outspoken on both sides of the issue. Ultimately, they voted by a 7-6 margin to have the trees removed.

Local veterans spoke out about the scheduled closure of the Thunder Bay veterans’ affairs office in February 2014. They, along with MPs John Rafferty and Bruce Hyer, slammed the government for turning their backs on those who had served their country. Also, city council unanimously passed a motion in November to protest the closure.

The spring bear hunt will return for the first time since 1999.

MPP Bill Mauro introduced a private member’s bill to launch the hunt, which is designed to control the bear population. It will be a two-year limited reintroduction in 2014 and 2015 open only to resident hunters.

Nearly 1,900 property owners received letters claiming the city was not liable for damages from the 2012 floods. The counsel for the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the city called the move an attempt to intimidate, and said the lawsuit would proceed forward. The $300 million lawsuit has approximately 400 plaintiffs.

New life was given to the Thunder Bay Generating Station on Nov. 15 with the announcement of its conversion to biomass.

Local and provincial leaders were mostly pleased to see the station would be kept running, but many believe the region would be better served with a natural gas conversion. The biomass plant would be the first of its kind in the world, and scheduled to begin operating in 2015.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre spent most of the month in a state of gridlock. Beginning on Nov. 4, the hospital was facing over-capacity issues with alternate level of care patients. This forced the cancellation of some elective surgeries.

Former Ornge president and CEO Chris Mazza spent a weekend working at the city’s hospital as a locum emergency room doctor. Mazza, the highest paid public official in Ontario in 2011, was ousted from his position at the air ambulance agency amidst controversy and a police probe.

Cliffs Natural Resources announced they were indefinitely suspending their Ring of Fire operations. The announcement came on Nov. 20, and said their Thunder Bay and Toronto offices would be closed by the end of the year with workers laid off effective Dec. 31. Opposition parties took the provincial government and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle to task in Queen’s Park.

The Thunder Bay Indian Friendship Centre continued their push to city council for funding for a new youth centre at the former Port Arthur Prosvita building. The group asked for $2.5 million as well as an annual operating contribution of $300,000. A group of local residents oppose the proposed youth centre, collecting more than 300 signatures on a petition against it.

Five people were killed when a Bearskin Airlines flight went down shortly outside the Red Lake Airport. Three of the flight’s passengers, all from Red Lake, along with both pilots died in the crash. There were two survivors.

The Chiefs of Ontario gathered on the Fort William First Nation for their annual winter meeting. One of the focal points of the meetings was the group’s rejection of the federal government’s proposed First Nations Education Act, and plans to create their own education plan in the province.

Officials with Horizon Wind Inc. walked out of a Nov. 26 meeting with the Fort William First Nation after 20 minutes due to a disagreement with their duty to consult with First Nations leaders. The environmental assessment of the project remains up in the air with no timeline for a provincial decision.

Nearly 200 employees at the Resolute Forest Products sawmill were abruptly sent home from work on Nov. 21 over a health and safety issue, the third of the year at the mill. Union officials accused management of creating an environment where employees were fearful of reporting incidents.

Thunder Bay--Superior North MP Bruce Hyer doubled the Green Party’s federal caucus when he crossed the floor. Hyer made the announcement on Dec. 13 along with party leader Elizabeth May in Thunder Bay. He had served as an independent since leaving the NDP in 2012.

A 72-year-old woman was struck by a Thunder Bay Transit bus when crossing Algoma Street at the Waverly Street intersection on Dec. 12. Audrey Kahkonen remained in hospital in serious condition through the end of the year. The bus operator was charged with careless driving.

The province unveiled its long-term energy plan on Dec. 2, with the region facing a 33 per cent hike in energy rates over the next three years, and projected energy costs rising 2.8 per cent over the next 20 years. The jury of an inquest looking into the death of a city construction worker returned with seven recommendations to improve job site safety for heavy machine operators. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue rescued a man stuck on the face of Mount McKay in the early morning hours of Dec. 1 after a parachuting mishap. The rescue took nearly eight hours in treacherous dark and icy conditions. The 24-year-old man was taken to hospital afterwards.

The arrival of winter weather turned area roadways treacherous and deadly. The OPP responded to 46 motor vehicle collisions on area highways on Dec. 15 alone, including a fatal single-vehicle crash near Shabaqua that claimed the life of a 55year-old Keswick, Ont. man.

Home health care for seniors received a boost on Dec. 18 with the announcement of $4.4 million to provide home care for more seniors as well as enhance services such as mental health programs. The money will go to more than a dozen regional health care providers to help improve the efficiency of the system.

By Matt Vis - TB Source uring the past month Craig Loverin has witnessed the devastating power of nature.

He has also experienced the endurance of the human spirit.

Loverin, a Warrant Officer with the Canadian Armed Forces and the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment, spent 34 days working as a liaison officer between the Canadian military’s Disaster Assistance Relief Team and the local governments as part of rebuilding efforts following the tragic landfall of Typhoon Haiyan in November.

“It was devastating. It was literally like someone stepping on your house and crushing it to the ground” Loverin said upon his return home at the Thunder Bay International Airport on Friday.

“But the people there, even though they were slapped by the worst typhoon in the world, were still smiling. It was probably the worst conditions they could have possibly been in but they’d smile at you and continue building their house and it was really heartwarming to see.”

Loverin was stationed on the island of Panay, which became the focal point of the Canadian DART’s relief efforts.

The devastation from the typhoon,

which was the deadliest in the nation’s history and one of the most powerful ever, has been seen throughout the world.

More than 6,000 people were killed in the Philippines alone with exponentially more left homeless.

Loverin, who has also served terms in Afghanistan, said watching the response of the country’s children provides a sense of hope.

“I think a lot of people see the devastation and how people are struggling but you look at the kids and the situation they’re in,” Loverin said.

“I went to a couple of schools and it was at the point where we were in reconstruction and they were still going to class every single day, but their school happened to be crushed or the roof was gone and they were carrying on with life.”

Rebuilding schools He said the reconstruction was centred around rebuilding the schools to keep the children busy to give parents some extra time to rebuild the homes and get on track to restoring normalcy and creating routine. He added progress is being made, and that the locals are at the point where they are able to “stand on their own two feet.”

The effort marked the first time liaison

officers were used by Canadian forces in a disaster relief situation. Loverin, who describes himself as half-Filipino, was one of 15 selected for the task.

He was responsible for acting as a gobetween for the international response and the municipal governments to help ensure smooth lines of communication.

He thinks the initiative was extremely successful.

“A lot of the time we were the first people on the scene and the first exposure they had to a foreign government helping them,” he said.

“Just being half-Filipino to them was enough. It meant a lot to them, especially because they didn’t realize there were Filipinos in the Canadian army.”

While he was there primarily in a relief capacity, the experience provided him with a valuable opportunity to discover some of his roots.

“It was an eye-opener for me. I learned a lot about the culture itself, more than what I had been taught when I was a kid,” Loverin said. “It was definitely a learning experience.”

Loverin will be immediately travelling again, as he is being whisked away to Minneapolis by wife Katelyn, who was warmly awaiting his arrival, for the final Minnesota Vikings game of the National Football League season.

Students from Sir Winston Churchill Elementary and Agnew H. Johnston Public School donated boxes to the felines waiting for adoption.

The painted boxes will be used as cat beds and the students certainly enjoyed the trip to the shelter.

All of the animals are spayed and have their shots.

Thunder Bay Animal Services also has a volunteer program that gets local residents to come in and keep the animals busy.

Columnist takes in the sights of his own snow-covered backyard turns forging ahead exploring the woods.

When I was about four or five, I remember being given a book that had wife Laura and our son Doug. It was illustrations by a famous American illustrator Wesley Dennis (I later learned).

Christmas Eve Day. For most of my life I’ve been haunted by Laura and I had been on snowshoes the previous week to collect a Christmas tree one picture I recall in that book.

It was that of a pine tree branch covered from our back lot.

I had written we were going to purchase in snow from which a couple of fat pine cones hung and just a tree from town – a beneath the branch on scotch pine, but when the ground deeply I went to do the deed, covered in snow, was a they were all sold out.

got my wings, he might remember my tale as hopefully he snowshoes through a pine forest. It doesn’t matter.

There was no chickadee but that too, didn’t matter. I realised that all these years, I’ve been living with a forest just like that painted by Wesley Dennis.

We didn’t see any wildlife on our trek.

Our dogs did locate a squirrel in one red pine tree. At least I’m assuming it was a squirrel.

Todd and Cedric were circling the tree, looking up with Toddy barking and Cedric whining. Baxter, the youngest, was exited, too, but I don’t think he quite knew why.

Speaking of squirrels and dogs, on Christmas night we had a gaggle of guests join us for a feast.

I was sitting with coffee after with Joe. He told me how he likes to go out at night with his dog and, if it isn’t too cold, sit on their verandah and listen. His pooch likes to listen, too.

One sound Joe described that perks up his dog’s ears is a quiet ‘whoosh’ followed by an equally quiet ‘puck’ sound.

“What is that?” I asked.

“It is a flying squirrel,” he answered.

“The ‘whoosh’ sound is them leaping through the air and the ‘puck’ sound is them landing on a tree trunk. We can hear that several times in a row.”

Wow! I’ve never heard that. But then Casa Jones is not located near the bush. It would be a trek to get near the trees to listen for such sounds.

So, more evidence that we live in a land full of enchantment. Just have to find time to look and listen.

But children living near or below the poverty line can often be left out in the cold.

The annual Firefighters Toys for Tots campaign gave more than 3,000 children across the city a reason to smile last week on Christmas morning after announcing they had raised $158,750 during their 37day drive.

“Christmas, for children especially, is the most special time of the year. I think it’s really influential in their childhood growing up receiving that gift and looking forward to a gift. I know that’s how it was for me,” said chairman and firefighter Paul

The goal for the campaign was to at least match the previous year’s total of $153,000 but they were able to surpass that number.

Off-duty firefighters had been manning a booth at the Intercity Shopping Centre food court since the launch of the campaign on Nov. 13 and had other fundraisers such as servers’ nights at Boston Pizza and On Deck.

Spending time at the booth and interacting with people who had been impacted by the campaign was one of the most worthwhile aspects of the initiative.

“People come up to me and tell me they were affected by what we did 20 years ago, I know that’s happening now and maybe 20 years from now the children will be coming up and saying thank you, it means a lot,” Penna said.

“That’s where you really notice that we are making a difference.”

The continued success of the campaign, which has been running for more than seven decades, can be traced to the eagerness and the participation of the firefighters.

Getting involved in the fundraising initiatives is something even the newest members of the department jump right into.

“We’ve had young firefighters who aren’t even on the trucks yet going through training volunteering their time,” Penna said. “Some of them spoke to me about how neat it was having people coming up and talking to them.”

Penna said he was overwhelmed by the support and the generosity of the community, and that a significant portion of the financial total is from independent organizations conducting their own fundraising.

What’s more, any amounts you withdraw are added to your available contribution room for future years.

You can transfer the assets in your TFSA at the date of your death to your spouse (or common-law partner) taxfree by naming them as the successor holder or beneficiary on your TFSA. Your spouse can transfer these assets to their own TFSA without affecting their available contribution room.

If you do not name a successor holder or a beneficiary on your TFSA, then the TFSA assets will form part of your estate.

Kettles filled to the brim Successful holiday season for local Salvation Army THUNDER BAY

he Salvation Army is nearing the end of a successful holiday season.

The local chapter of The Salvation Army announced on Christmas Eve that they achieved its Christmas Kettle campaign goal of $170,000 despite being off-pace from the previous year.

“It was slow from the beginning and we didn’t have our volunteers in place early so that put us behind a little bit,” said public relations representative Gail Kromm at their headquarters on Friday.

“In the end it all turned out good so we’re all happy.”

The organization still has some donations that have yet to be counted before the end of the year such as a one-day matching program from Wal-Mart as well as late online donations.

Last year’s campaign was able to raise $175,000 but Kromm said the target for this year was set at the number needed to ensure there wouldn’t be any shortfalls.

When all is said and done, Kromm expects the total figure to approach the 2012 figure.

ON PAR: Salvation Army Thunder Bay public relations representative Gail Kromm said on Friday the local organization expects to match the $175,000 raised last year through the Christmas Ketlle campaign.

Their signature red Christmas kettles were present at eight locations across the city throughout the duration of the campaign.

Kromm said there were some internal issues getting in touch with volunteers at the beginning of the campaign but by the end had more than enough people willing to spend some time manning the stations.

“It was more just connecting with

people than anything,” she said.

She estimated that the total from the kettle campaign represents a little more than a third of the Salvation Army’s yearly fundraising total.

Some of the community programs that the organization is able to run comes as a result of the campaign.

Examples of these programs include the nightly soup van as well as school breakfast and anti-bullying programs.

“We also help not only with food at the food bank but in other ways in a more holistic way to support people going there,” she said. “If there is some kind of a disaster we’re able to provide clothing and household goods as well through the program.”

In addition to the kettles, the organization is working to modernize their collecting methods by having online donations available.

Reflecting on lessons learned in 2013 While Miley Cyrus’ twerking may have been a lowlight, Batkid melted many hearts

s we begin a new year full of hope, plans, excitement and trepidation, we also close out 365 (and one quarter) days of headlines, heartaches, disasters and disappointments.

And once again, I find myself asking the age-old question often posed to me by my own father, “So what the heck did we learn from 2013?” (I added the 2013 part.)

A

Despite Mom’s edict not to put that in your mouth, some things should just stay there. Miley Cyrus’ tongue, for instance.

Some people should never be allowed near a camera. Rob Ford’s lawyer would likely agree.

American politicians proved that their image – or was it their ego? – was more important than the health of their country.

And I personally realized that I should stop listening every time Kanye West appears.

My hope for 2014 is that his selfaggrandizing, over-blown, mistaken God-complex will get the heavy medication and therapy it so desperately needs.

The year once again proved that while many of us bemoan what tech-

nology has done to both the English language and people’s spelling skills, Webster’s Dictionary is embracing the new vernacular that is being created at a dazzling speed.

Thanks to TV we’ve now added …

Twerking – This dance move may have been around for some time, but it was Miley Cyrus’ butt at the Video Music Awards that did the most damage.

And as The View’s Sherry Shepard said: “Twerking is a grown woman’s sport.”

Binge-watching became de rigueur thanks to PVRs, Netflix and entire seasons available for download or on DVD. And people, it’s not healthy to watch several hours of any one thing.

That’s a brainwashing tactic from 1942.

The selfie proved there is no limit to our vanity. But it’s really just a reinvention of the photo booths we used as kids.

Even what is now referred to as “photo-bombing” is the same old joke from high school back when doing “bunny ears” on our friends was the epitome of funny.

The truth is we’ve run out of good new stuff and most of us are just recycling the bad.

Or the not-completely-toxic.

This year, we lost many legends and newer stars with equally heavy hearts.

From Peter Sellers’ death to the Paul Walker tragedy, Hollywood got a little dimmer this year.

Of course, that could be the resurgence of the Kardashian media machine.

On TV, we watched a marathon get bombed, the U.S. government selfimplode, tornadoes destroy towns and a Canadian mayor become an international joke.

Fortunately, kids brought us hope in 2013 like no one else.

Sixteen-year-old Malala Yousafzai proved that a little gunshot to the head would not stop Pakistani girls from getting the education they wanted.

And it may have started out as a simple Make-A-Wish plan, but the entire city of San Francisco came out to help a five-year-old leukemia patient turn into the all-powerful crime fighter Batkid.

A hero who made us all feel powerful.

So maybe 2013 wasn’t all bad. But in 2014, we can do better.

T-Wolves surprising in first half UNIVERSITY HOCKEY

The first-year head coach has guided Lakehead to a No. 7 national ranking and the first-half OUA West division lead as the club sports an 11-3-0 record.

Not bad for what was expected to be a rebuilding campaign.

“I never thought we’d be ranked, but I guess it’s a feather in their caps as we go forward worry about ourselves and our next game,” McDonald said during the holiday break.

It’s safe to say that not many people would have expected such a strong start after Lakehead was outscored by a 17-3 margin in their three preseason tune-ups.

A large part of the success can be attributed to their first-half matchups.

As the Thunderwolves go forward, their schedule will be decidedly more difficult than the one they played during the first two months of the campaign, where the teams they played had combined first half records of 33-62-10..

The total win-loss record of Lakehead’s second-half opposition is 63-39-7, with only one of those clubs holding a ledger below .500 during the

first half.

The Thunderwolves will be looking at eight of their final 14 games coming against teams that are second through fifth in the division, including road dates against archrivals Windsor Lancers and Western Mustangs.

“We see the schedule and if you look at the win-loss columns we’re going to be playing the harder teams now but we’re going to take it one game at a time and worry about ourselves,” McDonald said.

“Of the games our (first-half) opponents played against teams we’re going to face in January we can run with them from what I’ve seen on tape.”

He knows there are aspects of their game that have to be improved to maintain the level of success down the home stretch.

One area of concern McDonald expressed was the team’s play on special teams when they have a man advantage, something that was visible during their non-conference sweep of the Laurentian Voyageurs this past weekend.

The power play unit was stifled on Friday before showing flashes of promise in recording a pair of goals on Saturday.

“There’s lots of stuff we haven’t even had a chance to work on,” he said.

“I know the power play hasn’t been great, but we haven’t even worked on it because we’ve spent a lot of time working on defensive zone coverage and team play.”

That concerted defensive focus has been highly visible for the Thunderwolves, as they have allowed

the fewest goals in their division and tied for the fewest in the conference. They have conceded only 31 during their first 14 contests.

That strong effort comes despite having to ride rookie netminder Justin McDonald for a significant portion of their slate after presumed starter Jeff

Bosch went down with a preseason knee injury.

Offensively, junior forward Mike Hammond has been the team’s leading point getter. Hammond, the only one of last year’s top-five scorers to return, has received help from rookie forward Cody Alcock who leads the team with 10 regular season goals.

McDonald has based the offence around keeping things simple by taking care of the defensive end and attacking in transition.

“We get two or three things and do them right, and that’s what we’re trying to do here,” he said.

“Our philosophy really is to commit to defence but when we have the puck we attack on offence.”

Injuries have been a concern, and the weekend provided relief before suffering a big loss.

Lakehead saw the return of forwards Carson Dubchak and Brennan Menard but will be without spark plug forward Trevor Gamache potentially for the remainder of the season after he reportedly broke his wrist in the Friday matchup with Laurentian.

The Thunderwolves off the second half against the Ryerson Rams with a weekend series at the Fort William Gardens.

“Jeremy is definitely great. All of the guys love him and he’s a players’ coach,” Wolframe said.

“He teaches us a lot. He was a good player himself and he has a lot to teach us and has really good systems.”
