Affordable housing needed or numbers will sharply rise T H U N D E R B AY

ithout a significant push for more affordable housing homeless rates in the city are only going to climb, says Shelter House’s executive director.

“I think until we get a handle on affordable, and in some cases supported, housing then our homeless population will continue to grow and grow,” Patty Hajdu said at the Shelter House on Monday.

“With a vacancy rate of around 1.3 to 1.4 per cent and no plans for additional affordable or subsidized housing in place, I think we’re at a critical point right now. I think part of this program is to demonstrate the number of people that aren’t even being serviced by traditional shelters.”

Hajdu identified five different strategies city council is implementing that identifies the lack of affordable housing as a significant issue.

The look on his face made that much clear.

The Thunder Bay Police officer returned home to the Thunder Bay International Airport late Saturday afternoon after spending a year deployed in Afghanistan to a colour guard and bagpipes.

“It was a little surprising, taken aback but I’m very honoured by the support of the police department and my family,” Read said once he had a chance to catch his breath.

Ring of Fire ball dropped I

We’re not racist

here are a lot of people hoping they don’t have to wash egg off their face in the wake of the latest Ring of Fire developments.

Late last month Cliffs Natural Resources decided they were pulling out of the project, at least temporarily, stating they have no plans for further investment in the foreseeable future.

While some see it as political posturing, a move aimed at forcing the government’s hand to build a roadway to the riches buried on traditional lands in the North, others believe that as time marched on, the company decided the payoff simply wasn’t worth the investment.

Opposition parties are lambasting Premier Kathleen Wynne – and by default Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle – for bungling the project from the get go.

Wynne in turn says the federal government needs to step to the plate and become a partner in the exercse.

The province should have seen this coming and should have stepped in much sooner.

It may be too little, too late for the Ring of Fire. Touted almost universally as the saviour of the North, if not the province, Wynne and company appear to have taken the development for granted, and now must scramble to avoid losing a potential cash cow and thousands of jobs. And that would be a crying shame.

To the editor: n response to Thunder Bay Source’s editorial of Nov. 28 concerning the Indian Friendship Centre, many details were overlooked and need to be addressed.

This older north-side neighbourhood was founded by immigrants from the Ukraine, Poland, Italy and Portugal, after often extreme prejudice forced them to pursue a better life in Canada. Children (many of whom are still residents of the neighbourhood) were raised to live and respect each other.

Racism is not the issue surrounding the location of the new Indian Friendship Centre, despite the media attention suggesting it is.

The primary concern is that this cannot be an ideal location. Other locations have not been explored. The cost of the building is $900,000 and requires an expansion of $9.8 million. To retrofit a building is a contractor’s nightmare and developing this centre in a more accessible location makes more sense. We are also blocks away from a main bus route and parking is limited.

The Indian Friendship, using their statistics, services more than 30,000 visits annually for their programs. There is no neighbourhood in Thunder Bay that could accommodate such heavy traffic, both pedestrian and vehicular.

Our concern is that this will lead to taking our backyards and green space for parking lots, which is a real possibility.

The Prosvita was a banquet centre and throughout the years we have not experienced negative behaviours or property damage. The traffic was never excessive or unmanageable, as the editorial suggests.

In conclusion the residents ask that other areas be explored as a new Indian Friendship Centre, a great idea but a wrong location. We also ask that the implications from the media that we are in any way racist stop and allow an open dialogue to take place without being labelled and discriminated as having invalid concerns.

Energy plan flawed ast week, the Ontario government unveiled its latest Long-Term Energy Plan (LTEP) for the province.

The document, creatively entitled ‘Achieving Balance,’ lays out the Liberals’ energy plan for about the next twenty years.

And while there are some highlights – including the commitment to invest in energy transmission and some generation in the Northwest, as well as extending the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate (NIER) program to 2016 in order to help our industries cut their significant and often unviable energy costs, not enough is being done to adequately prepare for the economic opportunities that lay on the horizon or to reduce residential electricity rates.

The Minister of Energy has boasted that residential customers can expect to pay $520 less under this long-term plan than the previous plan released in 2010. But let’s not forget that in 2010 the Liberals told us to expect our bills to soar by 46 per cent over the next five years.

In this new ‘Achieving Balance’ plan, we are told to expect a mere

increase of 42 per cent over the next five years. On top of this, the plan also stresses that the 10 per cent we are currently saving on our bills through the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit program is set to expire in 2015 and will not be continued or replaced.

When asked on Nov. 27 why more wasn’t being done by the Liberals to bring down the cost of our hydro bills, Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli said to the Toronto Star that these energy rates are “a fact of life” and that if we don’t like it, we should control our own bills by lowering consumption.

This kind of flippant comment makes me hot under the collar. I’ve heard from too many people across the region to believe this kind of nonsense.

I know that we are already doing what we can to conserve. The fact is, we live in a colder climate. There is only so much we can do to limit our energy use.

And with off-peak prices having

increased 140 per cent since 2007, and peak prices having risen 48 per cent, the gap between the time of use rates has grossly diminished. So regardless of whether we stay up late to do our laundry, cook our meals and undertake life’s other necessities, the fact is that we have little control over the bottom line cost of our bills. Especially once the Debt Retirement Charge, delivery charge, HST, and other regulatory charges are added.

It is important to keep in mind what our neighbouring provinces are charging.

Twice as high A household that uses 2,000 kWh of electricity a month in Manitoba pays about $150. To the east of us, the same usage would cost a household in Montreal four dollars less. In Ontario, the cost is nearly two times higher, at about $298.

What is especially frustrating about these facts is that for both provinces, the bulk of their power is generated through hydro, something we have an abundance of in the Northwest.

If both of our provincial neighbours can provide this essential service at about half the price while using the same resources we have, why can’t we?

Canadians have it good compared to other countries

By J.R. Shermack Special to TB Source f a loved one was having a medical emergency, moaning and grimacing from extreme pain, what would you give to make it stop?

If a family member needed emergency medical procedures including an ambulance and surgery at 2 a.m., what would you do?

Most Canadians would give anything to relieve the suffering of a fellow human being but with close family and friends the urgency is doubled.

One of the first things you would do is get them to the nearest hospital and find them the best medical care available.

Then you would rest assured that they are in good hands with all the miracles of modern science at their disposal.

The outcomes aren’t always favourable, but many times the results are everything you could hope for and a full recovery is assured.

That’s health care in Canada.

Right now I have a fresh perspective on health care because my family went through just such an emergency last week.

More specifically, I have firsthand experience at our own Hospital, the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

As a patient I have been treated for stones and broken bones and the procedures I needed were often

invasive, sometimes painful and work I witnessed brought a tear to my eye. always very stressful.

I readily admit I have a thing for I have myself been probed, prodded and photographed inter- nurses.

Whether they were caring for me nally with various hi-tech imaging or helping a loved one, I never met machines and paraphernalia.

ome changes are expected before city council approves an expansion of a subdivision next year.

If approved, which city administration is recommending, Dawson Heights would see 15 new homes, 20 townhouses and five sixplexes in a 2.46 hectare area of the area near Wardrope Avenue.

The expansion would also need two new streets and a walkway. Those are proposed to end west of the expansion, which is where the Fedorchuk family’s 44 acres of land begins.

Darlene Fedorchuk said they’re in favour of the expansion, but want signs and fences put up near the property so that people know that it’s private.

They’d also like to see that mentioned on title and deeds for people buying the new lots.

Tele-health program lands hunder Bay has become the first city in Northern Ontario to bring a Tele Home Care program into action.

This will be the fifth such program in all of Ontario.

The program is being run by the Northwest Community Care Access Centre. It provides patients with chronic conditions the option of receiving medical attention at home, without having to visit a hospital.

Using a simple device that's loaned to patients in the program, they can wake up in the morning and run simple tests themselves.

Then a registered nurse will review the results and provide remote monitoring and health coaching sessions.

The program has been running for four weeks and already has 12 of their 160 spots filled. – Thunder Bay Television

Firearms stolen ore details have been released on a string of camp break-ins reported last week in the Boreal Road and

Highway 527 areas.

The break-ins all occurred between Nov. 22 and Dec. 2, and involved camps at Max, Decourcey, Pete's and Escape Lakes and off the Boreal Road at Mark's Hoof and Batwing Lakes.

Officials with the Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP say it appears more than $50,000 worth of items were taken in the break-ins.

The list of stolen items includes as many as 17 firearms.

Teenager stabbed, girlfriend arrested 23-year-old woman is in police custody following an early morning stabbing.

Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service report that a 19-year-old man is at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre with non life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in the chest twice.

The incident took place just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday on North Vickers Street.

The suspected woman attacker is scheduled to appear in bail court Thursday morning. She faces charges of aggravated assault.

Charities hurting couple of major Thunder Bay fundraising campaigns are reporting some disappointing returns.

Thunder Bay United Way officials say they've brought in just over $1.3 million so far for this year’s fundraising effort. And with just four weeks left in the campaign, that total is less than half of the $2.7 million target.

Similarly, the Salvation Army says its Christmas Kettle Campaign has brought in just under $40,000, which is about $13,000 below the total raised by this time last year.

It also leaves them well short of their $170,000 overall target.

Both campaigns are urging people to make their donations today to help ensure they reach their goals.

Dawson Road home has been completely destroyed by a fire.

No injuries were reported as a result of the Sunday evening blaze at the home located between Dog Lake Road and Shirley Road.

Firefighters remained on the scene until Monday morning.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue fire prevention officer Paul Bureau told reporters that the home is a complete loss.

“When Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded on scene, flames were coming out of the Aframe windows,” Bureau said. “The basement was also fully involved.”

The house fire was in a difficult area for firefighters as there were no fire hydrants in the immediate area.

Two pumpers were used to bring water from the nearest hydrants, located near Paquette Road, to the scene.

All that remains of the home now are segments of walls and the foundation of the chimney. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, but Bureau said it appears to have originated in the basement.

Wynne, Harper talk ROF Ontario premier says she stressed infrastructure importance to prime minister

At the Northern Leaders Forum in Timmins on Friday, Premier Kathleen Wynne said her Dec. 5 meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper was constructive and the two spoke about several topics, including infrastructure support for the Ring of Fire.

"We did not get to that level of specificity in terms of dollar amounts or any particular financial mechanism," she said during a teleconference with media.

Discussed needs The two leaders did discuss the economic importance of the Ring of Fire, including what Wynne called the integral importance of infrastructure to the development of the project.

The prime minister said he would consider federal representation in the Ontario

Liberal's proposed development corporation.

"I feel much more optimistic about that," said Wynne.

"I did make the point to the prime minister this is actually the perfect time for us to be working on forming the development corporation," she said, adding the federal government expressed some concerns that there hadn't been upfront consultations.

Just starting But Wynne said she assured Harper they are just at the beginning stages of the development corporation.

"We see the development corporation as a mechanism for working on getting the infrastructure built and getting the right infrastructure built so now is the exactly right time to be having this discussion with the federal government," Wynne said.

In the coming weeks, Minister of Northern Development and Mines MIchael Gravelle will meet with Kenora MP Greg Rickford, the federal minister responsible for the Ring of Fire, to discuss the formation of the development corporation.

By Leith Dunick – TB Source hen James Whalen built the iconic building that bears his name in Port Arthur’s downtown core, his dream was to make it the cornerstone of commerce in the Chicago of the North.

One hundred years later the building still stands, a Thunder Bay landmark that represents the grandeur of the city’s past and offers a glimpse at its future.

Whalen, a business magnate who at one time owned as many as 77 businesses throughout Canada, saw his fortune dissipate as the Great Depression dug its claws into the young country’s financial well being. But his legacy lives on today, one worth keeping says Andrew Cotter, chairman of the Thunder Bay Heritage Advisory Committee.

At a ceremony on Friday marking the building’s 100th anniversary, Cotter said preserving the building’s rich heritage is a way of keeping the community’s history alive and well.

“I think it’s important because these

buildings are one of the only indications we have of our city’s history, our country’s history,” Cotter said.

“I think this is a very good investment.

It’s almost like a living museum, if you’d like to call it that, of what was happening at that time.”

All it takes is a close-up look at the structure, which recently underwent a multi-million dollar refurbishment and is set to see the interior of three floors redone to attract new tenants.

“The building was beautiful in stature.

If you look at the exterior of the building, all of the ornate symbolisms on the building, the statues and the heads that represent all the provinces, they all just signified Canada and its growth at the time,” Cotter said.

Built to last on the site of the city’s former car barn, the 65,000 square foot Whalen Building features a concrete foundation, reinforced concrete walls and cost $475,000 to construct – that’s about $11.3 million in today’s dollars.

Whalen’s growing empire, two years after his 1929 death the building was sold to the Port Arthur Public Utilities Commissions for $175,000 in a tax arrears sale.

It also became Port Arthur’s seat of government, with city hall occupying

the second and third floors through 1969, when amalgamation hit the twin cities. At that time it was turned over to Thunder Bay Hydro, which still resides there to this day.

Joel DePeuter, the manager of the city’s realty services division, said

they’ve spent millions renovating the building because city council sees it as a valuable asset to its economic future.

Today, in addition to Thunder Bay Hydro, the building hosts the Community Economic Development Corporation and Cancer Care Ontario.

Until recently it was also the home of the Thunder Bay and District Social Services Administration Board, which moved to its own south-side headquarters two years ago.

DePeuter said the building’s importance stands for itself.

“It symbolizes a remarkable history of the City of Thunder Bay. It is in a location which is up-and-coming. It ties in nicely with the waterfront development and it feels that this building is a tool for economic development and the space within it can be used for job creation ... within key economic sectors.”

DePeuter added it’s hoped to include the Whalen Building in the city’s Open Door event in 2014.

In many circumstances, this is the first time a patient has had such a thorough examination, let alone have their doctor actually touch them to discover the cause of the problem.

These nerves going to your muscles, joints and even vital organs will not function at their optimal best and begin to cause tissue and eventually organ or muscle/joint failure. Chiropractors see these kinds of conditions all the time and are the best ones to see to alleviate the nerve problem, before surgery or powerful drugs are needed.

In addition to spinal adjustments, many chiropractors take a serious interest in their patient’s diet and lifestyle choices in order to help them heal faster and live long and healthy.

By Jamie Smith – TB Source here is no question Thunder Bay will have the energy it needs when it needs it, says Ontario's Energy Minister.

In a conference call with media Wednesday afternoon, Minister Bob Chiarelli discussed the Liberal government's long-term energy plan, which has projected energy costs rising 2.8 per cent over 20 years.

Despite an announcement last month that the Thunder Bay Generating Station will be converted to burn advanced biomass by 2015, the region's energy task force last week said they believe the region will need more power, especially with a potential mining boom.

According to their numbers, 75,000 tonnes would be needed in cold weather and 120,000 in droughts just to meet the region's current energy needs.

However, Chiarelli said he didn't

agree with that statement and the mining companies aren't complaining.

"They know what our program is for transmission and generation. They know it's going to be there when they need it," he said, noting that in addition to the generating station, in five years the area will also have access to power from the east-west transmission line.

Chiarelli also said the province is in negotiations with Cliffs Natural Resources about an accommodation in the energy rate for the Ring of Fire.

oing back to school is never an easy decision to make.

For some students, the classroom was a frightening or belittling experience, one they thought they’d left well in their past.

But the desire to escape minimum-wage purgatory is often enough to convince some students to put aside their fears and take the plunge back into academics in favour of what they hope will be a better life for themselves, and often is the case, their families.

On Thursday 150 like-minded students took the next step toward that goal, recognized for completing Confederation College’s academic upgrading program.

The program prepares students who need to boost their skills to get into college and university courses, apprenticeship programs or employment requirements for either a promotion or to land a coveted job.

Now enrolled in the college’s business accounting program, Patterson said she was nervous at first, but quickly realized her worry

was without merit.

“It was quite nerve-wracking. But everybody was quite receptive and quite welcoming. So within the first few days I felt quite comfortable,” said Patterson, honoured with the Academic and Career Entrance communications award for her efforts.

“What I tried to get out of the program was to get back into the swing of things and be more prepared because I had been out of school for 13 years. I’m just finishing my first semester in business accounting and I found that the academic upgrading program very much prepared me for what was to come in post-secondary (school).”

Confederation College president Jim Madder called it a fantastic day for both the school and its students, but the community of Thunder Bay and all of Northwestern Ontario.

“All of the people who will be marking their accomplishments today never thought they would complete high school equivalency.

They often dropped out sometime in the past and had other things occur in their lives,” Madder said.

“To me, this is not just completing high school and working their way through it, it’s generating optimism and hope and a future for them as well.”

Victims of ’89 Montreal massacre remembered T H U N D E R B AY

ichard Khoury was 10 years old and living in Quebec City on the day of the Montreal Massacre.

On Dec. 6, 1989, Marc Lepine entered the École Polytechnique in Montreal and killed 14 women before killing himself.

Lakehead University honoured the women who lost their lives that day with a ceremony to recognize the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Khoury, now an associate professor of software engineering at Lakehead, spoke at the ceremony of his memories of that day and what it means for his home province.

He recalled arriving at school the day after the massacre not knowing what had happened.

“I got there expecting a regular school day and all the teachers were very clearly disturbed by something,” he said.

“I couldn't understand or make sense of it back then; I was just too young.”

Over time, Khoury came to realize what had happened that day. It was an event that cast a shadow over all of Quebec, something they could never shake off.

Winter arrives with snow and cold t is winter. Yup. Snow and cold. I asked for snow. I didn’t ask for cold.

Apparently it is a package deal.

I wrote last week that it had begun to snow. It sure did.

We received at least 15 centimeters (six inches). That isn’t really a lot but coupled with the fierce winds and you get some fairly high drifts that seem to collect at the most inconvenient places.

The new snow had mounded in front of the doors to the horse barn making it hard to impossible to open. Solution?

Big Red, my battle-weary diesel tractor.

I’ve left the blade attached since I still want to use the blade and the threepoint hitch to lift felled trees – standing dead Jack pine – and haul them to Casa Jones to be bucked and split for that highly aromatic snap, crackle, and pop

FRED JONES RURAL ROOTS in the fireplace. Besides, attaching the snow blower is a major exercise in patience (rarely succeeded) and often accompanied by profanity (rarely omitted). Once the snow blower is on, it isn’t coming off until spring melt.

Over the years that I’ve owned Big Red, I can count on both hands the number of times my Swiss cheese memory slides into place such that I forget to plug the tractor at night especially if forewarned of incoming inclement weather.

Somehow that hole in the cheese has been filled and it is with great relief that I trudge out to the shelter to find that Big Red is plugged in and starts up

immediately despite the temperature.

Like the other morning after the first big snowfall of this season. Since our hired barn help had telephoned to say that the roads were plowed and that she could come and muck out the stalls, but would she be able to get in our driveway.

That’d be a ‘no’ on that Big Jim. I had to hussle outside and get to work.

Red started without hesitation and off we drove.

Snow clearing at our farm requires planning. There are immediate priorities: first, scrape the snow from in front of the doors; then clear pathways from the barn to the paddocks where the horses will spend the day; then make sure the wheelbarrow can easily get to and from the shavings shed (we use wood shavings for stall bedding); scrape a pathway from the barn to ‘Mount Crumpet’ in the bush where the stall leavings are left; and finally clear the driveways and parking space in front of the barn.

I was on Big Red a total of four hours with an hour break to acquire some noon-time sustenance. When I reentered Casa Jones, my son, Doug, remarked on the redness of that part of my face not covered with facial hair.

Dressing for the task of snow clearing requires donning sweaters, thick socks, and my insulated work overalls and matching jacket. Said jacket now has duct tape sealing the pockets since carrying tools and nails for fence repair over the years has caused gaping holes.

At any rate, when fully festooned, I look and feel like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Walk like one too.

The second part of the package deal arrived a couple of days after the coming of the serious snow. The temperature dropped. I trundled into the kitchen to make coffee that facefreezing morning to discover the thermometer hovering at minus thirty Celsius. Even the dogs elected to hold on to their bladders rather than risk freezing. The cats wanted out as per

usual in the morning. Hah! They whine; you open the door; they shrink back shaking their paws. They head to the other door – repeat the above.

Dog days Eventually I suit up and doggies are willing to exit our warm hoosie to do their morning business. The two younger pups (one five, one a year-anda-half) stay out with me as Big Red and I go back and forth.

The eldest pup, Cedric, eleven, whose hind end is going, and who can open the front door, disappears back into the warmth. I spot his entrance while seated atop Big Red but I’m wa-a-a-y over at the barn.

Fortunately, I see my son Doug, close the door thus keeping in precious heat.

And so it begins: snow removal. And almost enough snow to make tracks with snowshoes. Just need a little bit more of the white stuff.

The reflection of the sun off the snow hurts your eyes, and focusing clearly is almost impossible.

During the winter months one of the most overlooked injuries is snow blindness, otherwise known as ultraviolet keratitis.

Nonsense you say?

Well statistically you are more likely to contract some form of snow blindness during bright winter days than any other time of the year, simply because snow reflects about 80 per cent of ultraviolet rays, compared to a sand beach (about 15 per cent) or water (40 per cent). Snow blindness can be dangerous.

There was a story written a few months ago that depicted the scene of a geologist who lost his only pair of eye protection glasses while prospecting in Canada’s north.

He neglected to take other precautions and did indeed suffer from snow blindness and lost most of his vision for almost 40 hours in a geographic location that was cold and harsh.

This fellow could barely see anything and had to endure almost two full days without his sense of sight in an area that was completely unfamiliar to him and temperatures in the -20s.

Although severely frostbitten and hungry, he did survive, and eventually got enough of his sight back to make his way out of the woods, but wrote this story to inform other Canadians of how he almost did not make it, because he failed to protect his eyes from the burning UV rays bouncing off the northern snow.

So what did the Inuit (Eskimos as some call them) do all these years with 10 months of snow and a lot of days of intense bright sun?

By Leith Dunick – TB Source ore than 7,000 toys are headed to Canada’s north this Christmas, thanks to the RCMP and the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service.

NAPS Sgt. Jackie George on Friday helped a crew of recruits finish giftwrapping the presents, readying them for the journey to remote communities in Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador and Northern Ontario.

It’s the first year NAPs has been involved in the Toys for the North program, a collaboration between the RCMP and the Canadian Toy Association, which provided about $110,000 worth of toys for the cause.

Children in the 34 communities NAPS serves will be delighted when the plane lands and the presents, which

also include diapers and baby wipes, are handed out.

“We’re going to be able to send packages to each and every one of them,” George said.

The look on the children’s faces makes it all worthwhile, she added.

“It’s a way of letting the communities know that people across Canada care and it’s just a good effort this time of year just to remember,” George said.

Cpl. Marc Bohemier of the RCMP said the program is in its fourth year and also involves volunteer effort from Canada’s armed forces, KimberlyClark, Hallmark Cards and Thompson Terminals.

Without their help, many of the children would go without at Christmas, he said.

“Ultimately it’s all about putting smiles on people’s faces, and not just

kids,” Behemier said. “It’s about families as well. A lot of the far northern communities across Canada, they don’t have access to stores and brand new toys like the rest of us do.”

It also fosters good relations between police and the people who live in the remote communities, who often have a sense of mistrust when law enforcement officials are involved.

About 1,200 toys were sent to Thunder Bay to be distributed in NAPS’s communities.

It was quite an effort to get to this stage, but a week into it, the toys were almost set to embark on the final leg of their journey.

“When the toys first came last Friday, they were brought up on a Hercules transport plane out of CFB Trenton.

Now we’re just packaging them up,” he said.

During the December installment of the college's live talk show Let's Talk About..., host Spencer Hari helped special guest Santa Claus unveil the college's fundraising total of $44,500 for this year's United Way community campaign.

The college community also raised more than $14,000 for Confederation's Stock the Bank, the school's emergency student food bank. They also collected more than 3,700 food items.

Number rises Last year more than 200 students accessed the food bank and Arpin said that number is only increasing as the college's student population grows.

The $44,500 raised for the United Way is 10 per cent more than what was raised last year and

United Way assistant director Jered Zieroth said the partnership between the college and the organization is a fantastic way to raise money for the community.

"We love this relationship with Confederation College," Zieroth said, adding the need for this money in the community is great.

The Thunder Bay chapter's goal this year is to raise $2.7 million to help 29 local agencies.

That money only covers 60 per cent of the ask to those funded agencies, said Zieroth.

"These 29 agencies that operate within our community, they help hold up a corner of our community and if they didn't exist, this would be a very different place to work and live," he said.

Cold didn’t stop Parade of Lights Fifteenth annual event draws about 60 parade floats T H U N D E R B AY

The annual Thunder Bay Police Association’s Parade of Lights hit the roads on Saturday evening, despite temperatures that approached -30C with the windchill.

Parade chairman Greg Stephenson said the parade, which is now in its 15th year, owes its success to the contributions of the entrants.

He said their decorating creativity makes it worthwhile for bystanders to brave the harsh December weather.

“It’s phenomenal every year the effort they put in,” Stephenson said prior to the start of the procession.

“I’ve been out driving around and there’s people lined up already even though the weather is cold, it’s going to be a great night.”

Stephenson estimated there would be approximately 60 registrants with vehicles of different sizes, themes and decorations participating. He said there is always a mix of yearly regulars as well as entrants making their debuts in the parade.

Some of the participants began preparations more than a month prior to the event, and at least one entry spent more than 60 hours decorating and setting up lights.

He said organizers expect thousands of people to line the route,

albeit a lot remaining in their vehicles. Prior to the start of the parade, the east side of the Main Street bridge was the epicentre of activity as the start of the route.

New ways to create for city’s youth THUNDER BAY

ome fresh new art workshops are underway in our community.

Designed for Aboriginal youth, and led by young emerging or established artists, Neechee Studio opened its door to the first creative session (out of seven planned) at Definitely Superior Art late last month.

Definitely Superior, recipient of one of this year’s Premier’s Awards for Excellence, is also home to a youth collective called Die Active. People may have noticed Die Active’s paintbrush around town – witness those giant outdoor wall murals, or buildings in need of a facelift instead now brightly covered with precise multi-coloured graffiti. A definite indication of what a team of positive-minded and energetic young artists can do here in Thunder Bay. Between now and next March Neechee Studio partners with Definitely Superior

NEW INITIATIVE: Neechee Studio saw 60 youth attend its opening day workshop. in offering six more workshops; the entire program is free to Aboriginal youth (ages 14-30) from the city and region. Details on how to participate follow. Meanwhile, here’s what people need to know about Neechee. The workshops focus on art, yes, but they also feature an important outreach component. They include sessions on family,

spousal, and peer violence: first-hand accounts of how others have coped and moved forward in their lives. For some this has been achieved through creativity.

The other good aspect about all of this: it’s mentorship for youth by peers.

The Source caught up with Lucille Atlookan, an artist involved in the first workshop. “I make art because I love doing it. It’s what I’m passionate about.

Releasing all that negative and positive energy onto a canvas with acrylic paint, it feels good. Like I’m letting all that energy go. I feel calm afterwards and happy that I created something from my own hands. I mainly work with acrylics am getting more interested in mixedmedia art; poetry, and photography.”

About the actual workshop: “art is a healing tool. I used it when I was a young teenager; I was going through a hard time and creating my artwork helped me get through it. I still use art as a healing tool, and I still create art to this day.”

“Die Active has had an amazing impact on young artists and this community. Over the past five years they’ve accomplished a lot, become a part of the city’s livelihood. The format of artists mentoring artists works really well. Now we wanted to reach out further and offer a program unique to aboriginal youth in this city; no other program like this exists, where aboriginal kids can create together in a safe and dynamic space such as DefSup. What do I expect to see? When we planned out Neechee with the aboriginal youth council, the RMYC and the RCMP, we were expecting about 20-30 youth– but when we opened Neechee Studio (Nov. 27) close to 60 youth attended. Their passion and focus at the workshop was so energizing; we sure see a bright future for Neechee!”

GOOD GRIEF: A Charlie Brown Christmas was an instant hit in 1965 when it first aired on CBS.

TV’s holiday tales

Christmas classics often carry wrong message ike many, I have always had my favourite Christmas tales. I watched them with the awestruck innocence of a child and years later, with the nostalgic warmth of a very strong hot toddy.

But recently, I’ve noticed something, well, disturbing about some of these yuletide gems. There is a rather strange morality being taught by our old favourite Christmas tales First, there’s Rudolph. Ever a merry tune if there was one.

But the gist of it is that we’re going to laugh at, mock, and shun you until you can do something for us. Only then will we accept you. Oh, and dentistry is not a valid career choice.

Next comes the theory that even when you’re really bad and commit murder, you can still buy your way into people’s good graces. This is thanks to Frosty the Snowman and the evil magician who bribed Santa with his magic hat in exchange for Christmas presents.

Is this what we want our children to learn?

While I love Dr. Seuss, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas proves that while presents and all the trimmings aren’t necessary to make the season merry, everyone was certainly happy to get them back.

Miracle on 34th Street shows that some adults are just plain mean and will arrest even Santa Claus.

A Charlie Brown’s Christmas told kids that if you add a lot of decorations to a skinny, naked, half-dead tree, it will look full and lush once again. (This is, in fact, false. I’ve tried it.)

And it may be a Wonderful Life, but the only time people say thank-you is when your whole world is crashing down.

And based on George Bailey’s courting method, you don’t even have to be nice to her in order to get the girl.

In T’was the Night Before Christmas, a town discovers that Santa won’t answer their letters or visit them on Christmas Eve due to a misunderstanding. So apparently, Santa does not see everything which confirms, once again, that it does not matter if kids are bad or good – thereby nullifying the whole “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” threat.

Try to fit in Will Farrell may look pretty hot in green tights, but Elf ‘s lesson is that if you don’t fit in at home, they’ll send you away without food, clothes, money, or any social or marketable skills.

And National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation says that electrocuting cats is funny; visiting relatives are not.

Meanwhile, Home Alone showed us not once, but multiple times in various incarnations that regardless of what your parents promise when they tuck you in at night, they can and will forget about you.

Finally, The Santa Clause reveals the holiday’s ugliest secret – that Santa killed to get his job.

I’m not sure these are the right lessons for the season.

Hopefully, our children’s youthful naiveté and lingering sugar high will leave them in blissful ignorance a little while longer.

Then again, this could just be the hot toddy speaking.

Rock out with Santa THE TBAY TO-DO LIST

Auditorium receives gift from late mayor THUNDER BAY

By TB Source he Thunder Bay Community Auditorium is getting a boost to honour donors and volunteers.

The Thunder Bay Community Auditorium Foundation announced a legacy gift from the estate of the late Dusty Miller in the amount of $25,000 to honour the original members of the Auditorium Guild.

Miller served as the first female mayor of Thunder Bay from 1978-1980, and also served a total of four terms on city council.

She passed away in 2012 at the age of 82.

During her political career Miller was instrumental to the city’s arts scene, and played a significant role in the creation of the Auditorium. She was involved with the coordination of drama and performing arts programs at both Lakehead University and Confederation College.

A reception was hosted at the Auditorium on Monday evening following the Tenors’ Christmas show.

The Auditorium Foundation will also be presenting a cheque of $35,000 towards the installation of an electronic donor board.

Queens strike triple gold Stars split HOCKEY

he Thunder Bay Queens organization doesn’t have too many opportunities to play at home.

That’s why they make the most of every chance they get.

Thunder Bay claimed gold in all three divisions of the annual Queens Showcase as the First Class Gas bantam AA Queens capped off the golden trifecta, scoring a 3-2 victory over the Schreiber North Shore Stars in the midget final at Fort William First Nations Arena on Sunday.

“I thought (home ice) gave us a bit of an advantage,” said bantam AA Queens head coach Rob Varrin after the game.

“We were well-rested and took advantage of that and outskated teams and pushed the puck.”

Level up The team was playing up an age group for the tournament. Game winning goal scorer Madeline Browczuk said the shift meant a different philosophy in how the squad approached their game.

“We had to play really aggressive and be on the puck all the time and get shots to the net,” Browczuk said.

Varrin said it was a challenge for the group, but said he believes it will pay dividends later in the year.

“The big thing is trying to move the puck a little quicker because the girls are stronger and a couple years older,” Varrin said. “The defence did a good job of getting the puck out and trying to get transition going.”

“It was a huge start for us,” Varrin said. “Usually we’re battling because we struggle to get a good start but (Sunday) we came out of the gates and it was an advantage for us.”
