Arriving late at night, back from two weeks away in Israel, I shuddered to think about taking the train into the city the following morning. But on Sunday, January 5, there I was on the train platform, honored to join several congregants in journeying to lower Manhattan to join 25,000 Jews and allies in demonstration of our solidarity with Jews of all backgrounds and denominations in condemning AntiSemitism. After spending winter vacation exploring the Jewish homeland and celebrating Chanukah with fellow congregants and our extended Jewish family in Israel, it was exhilarating to see so many people marching together. Ultimately, it served as a fitting capstone to the experiences shared in Israel.

It has been shocking to witness the rising tide of Anti-Semitism here in New York, a city famous for its large Jewish community and its vibrant expressions of culture and tradition. Here at Beth El, we consider it a foundational part of our mission to not only stand against Anti-Semitism but to support our families in understanding and responding to its forms and expressions. Earlier this year, we welcomed the Anti-Defamation League Regional Director Evan Bernstein to our congregation.

Back in December, Rabbi Linzer invited Dr. Betsy Stone to lead a workshop so that parents could better communicate with their children about the scourge of Anti-Semitism. Going forward, we will continue to equip our families with the tools to face this ongoing threat.

At the same time, we Jews are not alone in serving as targets of hatred and bigotry. To that end, I am excited to announce our partnership with Antioch Baptist Church of Bedford Hills in welcoming Professor Marc Dollinger, author of Black Power, Jewish Politics: A Re-examination of the Relationship Between the African and Jewish American Communities. Through lectures on Friday, February 7 at Beth El and Sunday, February 9 at Antioch Church; Professor Dollinger will speak about the historical and present relationship between the Jewish and African American communities and how we can serve as allies and supporters today. Please join us for what will no doubt be an illuminating discussion. More information is available on page 3.

Finally, I take solace in the fact that amidst such an environment of rising hatred in America, our congregation proudly stands as a center of Jewish living and learning. Ultimately, Judaism ought to be less focused on responding to hate and more on celebrating the joy that brings us together. I look forward to continuing to nurture this sense of optimism and hope that as we begin the year 2020, better days lie ahead.

Black Power/Jewish Politics: Reinventing the Alliance in the 1960s Friday, February 7 at 7:15 pm at Temple Beth El Black Power, Jewish Politics: Reinventing The Alliance In The 1960s, Professor Dollinger’s most recent book, takes a new and different look at Jewish involvement in the civil rights movement, showing how American Jews leveraged the Black Power movement to increase Jewish ethnic and religious identity in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Join us as we explore never-before-seen historical documents that reveal a story that’s been hidden from view for over half a century. With so much contemporary interest in Black Lives Matter and larger questions of race and justice, we’ll explore a fascinating and surprising Jewish past.

“Civil Rights and Social Justice” The Untold Story of the Relationship Between African Americans and American Jews in the 1960s Sunday, February 9 at 1:00 pm at Antioch Baptist Church, Bedford Hills A journey from the consensus politics of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to the conflict-centered era of Black Power and ethnic nationalism. Discover the impetus (and limits) of Jewish involvement in civil rights and the nuanced relationship with the African American community. Then travel through the tumultuous 1960s to learn the hidden reasons for a magnificent rebirth of Jewish identity and Jewish life in America and in what way the Jewish community took its cues from the ethno-nationalistic pride of the African American community.

Confronting our own End of Life Struggles: The Stories of Moses and Aaron Sundays, 10:30 am–12:00 pm with Scholar-in-Residence, Rabbi Norman Cohen, Ph.D.

As we continue to immerse ourselves in the life stories of the biblical characters and find meaning for our own lives, no character is more powerful than Moses. His life frames most of the Torah and we have studied several portions of it. Yet, it behooves us to look closely at his end of life struggles, which we all experience — how he copes with aging, the loss of his brother and sister, his handing over power to his disciple Joshua, and his own death. Come along and imbibe the power of these moments in Moses’ life as seen through the provocative and engaging world of Midrash.

Due to the timing of the High Holy Days this year, Cantor Sternlieb has decided to begin our rehearsals well in advance so we have plenty of time to prepare. Please join us once a month on the following Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 pm in the Sanctuary for High Holy Day Music: March 3, April 14, May 5, and June 2 After the June rehearsal we will be on our own to study High Holy Day music with our own personal recordings and binders until we resume in September.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Third Grade Trip to the Chagall for Children Exhibit at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center

By Lauren Harburger, TBE Member and Religious School Parent This fall, third grade Religious School students went on an exciting field trip to the Stamford Museum and Nature Center to experience work by Marc Chagall. The exhibit entitled, Chagall for Children, was interactive and allowed students to explore three stations to learn about Chagall’s unique style. One station was in the nature center where students experimented with how drops of water affect colored ink. Students also got the opportunity to meet live animals including salamanders, turtles, hamsters, millipedes, and frogs. Another station was in the main building where students saw Chagall’s paintings. Each painting had an activity associated with it that the students really enjoyed.

One third grade teacher said that “it was hard to drag RELIGIOUS SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS the kids out of the room” because they enjoyed it so much. The third station allowed students to design February art works of their own using drawings and tissue 1 6th Grade Mitzvah Corps Orientation paper squares. A teacher noted that “the hands-on 2 Junior Youth K Warrior Fitness Bootcamp nature of the event did a lot to show the students the 3 6th Grade Confirmation Program w/Rabbi Jaffe artist’s perspective.” This multi-sensory exhibit gave 9 Junior Youth 4th Grade Donut Wars our students a unique opportunity to learn about an 13 Junior Youth 5th & 6th Grade Chopped Jr. important Jewish artist in a fun and engaging experience 16-23 No School – February Recess outside of the classroom.

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER The Preschool is Alive with the Sound of Music

By Hope Blauner, TBE ECC Director Music is woven into all facets of our day. We’re singing songs to welcome the children in the morning. We listen to classical music during snack time. We sing to celebrate Shabbat celebrations on the bimah. And of course we are singing at our weekly music time with Matty Kapatty. Music brings us together and gives us a feeling of belonging. It is part of the fabric of our life here at the ECC. Every Wednesday, our music teacher, Matt Krass, aka Matty Kapatty, plays the guitar and leads the children in song. Matt normally goes by his professional name Matty Roxx but the children have come to know him as Matty Kapatty. On Matty’s first day at the ECC, he taught the children a silly rhyming song to learn their names and that’s when he earned his nickname. Now, when the children see Matty, they scream MATTY KAPATTY. The children have learned new songs to sing for each Jewish holiday, and secular songs as well. Matty always makes music time fun and exciting and often surprises the children with a new instrument. Just recently he brought his bongo drum into the social hall and every child had an opportunity to play.

Our school-wide Shabbat celebrations led by Rabbi Jaffe and Rabbi Linzer are spent singing and dancing to our favorite Shabbat songs including Bim Bam, Standing at the Sea, and Dinosaur. Rabbi Jaffe’s guitar playing has inspired many of our preschoolers to bring in their own guitars and play along. They are now known as the “Shabbat Band” and, because we have so many children playing, we had to change the set up in order to make more room to accommodate everyone. The band is always growing and everyone is invited to join.

Just recently, Cantor Sternlieb has begun spending time in every classroom. It’s a special opportunity for the children to develop a relationship with the cantor. With her guitar in hand, she’s been teaching the children new songs and melodies as well as singing some old favorites too. Our favorite song by far is the one we sing at Tot Shabbat; I was Walking Down the Street.

Music is a language that can be universally enjoyed by everyone. It brings us joy and lifts our spirits. When we sing together as one voice we bond with our friends and classmates and the melodies brings us closer together. Music is an integral part of our ECC world and something that makes our days bright and happy.

MITZVAH OF THE MONTH: FEBRUARY Annual Soup’er Bowl Sunday Sunday, February 2 10:30–11:30 am Activity 11:30–12:00 pm Lunch We invite all ages to create soup kits to be donated to the Bronx Jewish Community Center. Making these jars, which will be distributed to homebound seniors, is great mitzvah work our community can do before football fever sets in! WORLD ZIONIST CONGRESS ELECTION Your Voice in Israel: #VoteReform in the 2020 WZC Election!

By Phoebe Thaler My name is Phoebe Thaler and I am serving as TBE’s congregational captain for the upcoming World Zionist Congress (WZC) election. I grew up in Chappaqua and at the synagogue and graduated from Roger Williams University last May. I was heavily involved at TBE in the past serving as youth group president and a madricha. I also bring experience from successfully managing two local political campaigns in the 2019 election, including Ivy, Jeremy, and Jason’s bid for town board here in New Castle.

Every five years we have the opportunity to send delegates to the World Zionist Congress, the legislative body of the World Zionist Organization and the only democratic organization representing Jews worldwide. The World Zionist Congress helps determine the leadership of Israeli national organizations and can influence policy in Israel. Specifically, the outcome of the WZC elections helps to determine the allocation of resources to various organizations in Israel. One of the successes of increased representation of the Reform Movement in the 2015 election was winning 4 million dollars a year for Reform Congregations in Israel. These funds have allowed for the growth of the Reform movement, as well as the eventual awarding of government funds as well. The election is being held January 21 to March 11.

I recognize that this may be something new to many people, so here is a more detailed description: What is the World Zionist Congress?

The World Zionist Congress first met in 1897 and serves as the legislative body for the World Zionist Organization. The World Zionist Organization was founded by Theodore Hertzel at the first meeting of the World Zionist Congress and currently serves as the Parliament of the Jewish people. Finally, The World Zionist Congress helps determine the leadership of Israeli national institutions, including the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency for Israel, and the Jewish National Fund.

Will my vote actually make a difference?

Yes! Every five years we have the opportunity to send delegates to the World Zionist Congress, which is the only democratic body representing Jews worldwide and serves as the voice of the diaspora in Israel.

After our efforts in the 2015 election, the American delegation is the largest outside of Israel with 145 delegates and 39% of them representing the Reform Movement.

How do I participate?

You can cast your vote from January 21 to March 11 at www.ZionistElection.org! Individuals who are 18 years or older by June 30, 2019 and self-identify as Jewish are eligible. Here at Beth El, we will be running our own voting drive. A voting kiosk will be available before and after Friday evening services and on Sunday mornings, staffed by a congregational volunteer. There is a processing fee of $7.50 to fund the election.

The World Zionist Congress elections is important to me because this is the only democratic opportunity to have a voice in Israel and create a more equitable future for our homeland. I hope you will decide to #VoteReform and spread the word to your Jewish friends and family. I urge you to participate at the synagogue or at home on ZionistElection.org and pick up your super fun “I Voted” sticker at our kiosks!

The synagogue is a kehilah kedoshah — a sacred community. Like a sukkah, it is constructed of many different branches woven together: the married and the unmarried, single parents, grandparents, non-Jewish spouses and those of all sexual orientations. The broader the sukkah’s reach, the more tightly its branches are woven, the stronger it stands. So too the synagogue: the greater the variety of people welcomed within it, the closer they feel to one another, the stronger the temple stands.
