2021 has seen a host of innovative collaborations with food and drinks brands at the Edinburgh store. Earlier this year, the launch of the Johnnie Walker Whisky Terrace, adorned with floral arrangements and furniture, echoing the newly relaunched Glenkinchie Distillery, served a special summer menu of whisky cocktails featuring Johnnie Walker Whisky and pre-empted the launch of Johnnie Walker Princes Street.

At the Forth Floor Foodmarket, for customers wanting to get someone a gift that says it all, they need look no further than the edit of premium Harvey Nichols hampers. The handpicked selection of hampers features some of the luxury retailer’s finest goods – from fine wines to decadent edible treats. Whether a customer is seeking food hampers for the culinary connoisseurs in their lives, or a Champagne gift for the wine lover who deserves to be pampered, there is something to suit all tastes. And hampers are strictly not just for Christmas. The brand is continuing to launch seasonal hampers for cultural touchpoints throughout the year, whether it’s to celebrate Lunar New Year, Mother’s Day, Easter or Eid.

More recently, the Hendrick’s Curious Cucumber & Rose Bar has landed instore at the Forth Floor. Showcasing an intriguing variety of Hendrick’s & Tonic and creative cocktail concoctions, the new pop-up bar endeavours to transport customers into the world of one of Scotland’s most iconic gin brands through the art of mixology. Cocktail connoisseurs can also book a special Afternoon Tea for two, which features sweet and savoury treats served with Hendrick’s Sunset & Vine Teapot cocktail, made from Hendrick’s Gin, Campari, elderflower cordial, Harvey Nichols Prosecco Rosé and Fever-Tree Soda.

Another key highlight this year has been the Kylie Minogue Wine Tasting Masterclasses hosted by Brand Ambassador, Madeleine St Clair. The sell-out events have seen wine lovers discover the world of Kylie Minogue Wines, who is now not only the “Princess of Pop”, but also the princess of popping corks. When Harvey Nichols first met the fabulous London resident, she admitted that she has always loved wine, fondly recalling cooking and chatting with her friends and family over a bottle or two. She therefore has some pretty strong views on the subject, which was why when approached by Benchmark Drinks about creating the Kylie range, she told them these would not be “style over substance” and that if they were “just plonking my name on it, I’m not interested.”

She definitely got her way. Later, she told Harvey Nichols that she remembered ascending the escalators to the Harvey Nichols Foodmarket and Wine Shop at our flagship Knightsbridge store in the 1990s, but would never have dreamt that over twenty years later her products would grace

As the year draws to a close the Forth Floor is delighted to be reinstating its perennially popular Hogmanay event. 2020 was a very different Christmas and Hogmanay in Scotland became a virtual affair. However, with a Champagne and bagpipes reception, followed by a four-course dinner with paired wines, a ceilidh and views of the renowned fireworks display at Edinburgh Castle, there is much to look forward to for Hogmanay 2021 at the Forth Floor. Automotive mobility has always been a fast moving and dynamic business, with new concepts – such as SUVs – appearing with great regularity. But those new concepts need to be perfected in order to be adopted by those customers who will accept no compromise – the patrons of true luxury. Hence the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce as it’s never seen before. When Sir Henry Royce said, “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it”, he could have had Cullinan in mind.

“We knew we had to offer our clients what they couldn’t find in the SUV market,” continues Müller-Ötvös. “They do not accept limitations or compromises in their lives. They are the new pioneers, and for them it’s about their sense of adventure and daring in how they live their experiences. This approach to life demands a motor car that can goanywhere in ultimate luxury and style – Rolls-Royce style. Hence Cullinan.”

It was clear that these new, younger and more adventurous customers wanted a Rolls-Royce that would take them completely off the beaten track and reward them with life’s most enriching experiences. What they didn’t want was a vehicle as ubiquitous as an SUV with compromises such as increased cabin noise due to the “two-box” formula; shared platforms that affect performance and comfort; the choice of being good either on-road or off-road; or a lower, more featureless SUV that blends in and becomes just another car.

“Cullinan is luxury in its purest form blended with perfect practicality and off-road capability,” comments Müller-Ötvös. “Effortless, Everywhere is not just the promise behind Cullinan. It’s the fact.”

“The drivetrain system we engineered for Cullinan had one key job to do,” explains Caroline Krismer, Engineering Project Leader for Cullinan. “To bring the famed Rolls-Royce ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ to all other terrains possible, while ensuring class-leading on-road behaviour in the SUV sector.”

Rolls-Royce’s celebrated Magic Carpet Ride impresses offroad as well as on-road thanks to the new lighter architecture, and the latest generation of self-levelling air suspension. Through a thorough re-engineering of the existing air suspension system – including adding larger air struts with more air volume to cushion the blows of the toughest of terrains – the strengthening of drive and prop shafts, the inclusion of drive to the front wheels as well as the back for the first time in Rolls-Royce history, and the complete reworking of the new 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine to deliver just the right level of torque

(850Nm) at the lowest possible revolutions (1,600rpm), the Rolls-Royce engineering team has ensured Cullinan will take owners to places no modern Rolls-Royce owner has travelled in luxury before.

The suspension makes millions of calculations every second as it continuously varies the electronically controlled shock absorber adjustment system – reacting to body and wheel acceleration, steering inputs and camera information. A new double-wishbone front axle and 5-link rear axle deliver astounding levels of control over lateral roll and shear forces and deliver incredible agility and stability, as does the addition of four-wheel steering, all contributing to incredible drivability and nimbleness.

In the case of driving off-road, the electronically controlled shock absorber adjustment system uses an air compression system to actively push down any wheel it detects losing traction to ensure every wheel is constantly in contact with the ground and maximum torque is being provided to all wheels.

“Put simply, what makes the car great on-road makes the car great off-road,” concludes Krismer.

The ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ taken off-road The integration of new technologies into the architecture was also key to ensuring the fundamental quality of Cullinan as Effortless, Everywhere. The engineering team began by creating a drivetrain that would bring Rolls-Royce’s famous ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ off-road.

The final piece of the puzzle of ensuring that the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Effortless, Everywhere is one single button. Known within Rolls-Royce as the ‘Everywhere’ button, one single push is all it takes to harness all the aforementioned peerless Rolls-Royce engineering and unleash all of Cullinan’s off-road capability.

Once engaged, the driver can finesse the off-road setting to glide over any situation, whether it be rough track, gravel, wet grass, mud, snow or sand delivering all 850Nm of torque to all four wheels without interruption. And faced with deep snow, sand or the need to ford streams, Cullinan delivers the deepest wading depth of any super-luxury SUV at 540mm thanks to its highest ride height.

Tank Must: Paying Homage to the 1980s Monochromes With the launch of the Must watches in 1977, the Tank watch, a Maison watchmaking icon created sixty years earlier, was made available in a vermeil version. With a burgundy or all black dial and a large gold-coloured logo, it freed itself from traditional watchmaking codes, opting instead for elegant simplicity. Faithful to the spirit of the 80s, the new Tank Must watch is available in three monochromatic colours that are embedded into Cartier’s DNA: red, blue and green. Steel watches that favour minimalist dials with no Roman numerals or “rail-tracks” and a fully chromatic look with matching straps.

A core production offering, the new Vantage F1® Edition sits at the top of the Vantage model line. Motivated by an exciting return to Formula 1® and as a direct result of the engineering that went into the development of the Vantage as an Official Safety Car of Formula 1®, which made its debut at the Formula 1® Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix earlier in 2021, the Vantage F1® Edition is the ultimate expression of performance and dynamism; it is the fastest and most focused of the already sporting Vantage.

The engineering team targeted intelligent, incremental improvements across multiple areas of the Vantage F1® Edition’s auto-only powertrain, chassis and aerodynamics to bring out more character, increase tactility and expand its outright capabilities.

Starting with the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, power is up by 25PS to a new maximum of 535PS. Peak torque remains unchanged at 685Nm, but that peak is sustained for longer to further increase tractability and in-gear urgency. This relentless, muscular performance has been further enhanced by work to the 8-speed automatic transmission, with an optimised torque cut during upshifts that reduces shift times and increases the feeling of directness and precision. This torque management also enhances the driver’s sense of control and connection during downshifts specifically under heavy braking and allows for finer control when the driver is balancing the car at its limit of traction. While noticeable in all circumstances and conditions, these improvements are especially beneficial when driving on track.

Moving to the chassis, the team’s focus centered on the suspension and steering, with further detailed underbody modifications to increase front structural stiffness for a further improvement in steering feel and response. Reworked damper internals have increased the dampers’ effective force range. This increase in bandwidth brings a noticeable improvement in vertical body control - both through high speed compressions and over crests - without any deterioration in low-speed compliance.

To compliment changes to the dampers, the chassis also benefits from increased rear spring rate and lateral stiffness to help sharpen turn-in, increase traction (especially over bumps) and ensure the rear-end is tuned to compliment the front-end’s rate of response. Further improvements to response and - crucially - to what the driver feels have been made to the steering system, allowing feedback from the road to be transmitted more clearly, which in turn helps build a detailed sense of available grip.

Not only is it the most powerful, but the Vantage F1® Edition benefits from unique and significant chassis and aerodynamic improvements developed by Aston Martin’s hugely experienced engineering team. While the luxury brand’s Aston Martin Cognizant Formula OneTM team was busy preparing a return to the grid, the engineering team behind the infamous road cars were too, creating the ultimate Aston Martin Vantage which could take on the role of an Official Safety Car of Formula 1®. Set to work

by Chief Executive Officer, Tobias Moers, the task was to develop significant performance enhancements, driven by improved lap time performance in order to successfully carry out its role on the F1® track, but without compromising its on-road capabilities. Notably, it would do so without the fitment of aggressively track-optimised tyres. Following the success of these enhancements, Moers instructed the integration of these into the production car, ultimately developing the new Vantage F1® Edition. The most sporting Vantage in the production range and in essence, a replica of the Vantage Official Safety Car of Formula 1®. An exciting proposition for Aston Martin customers.

With the chassis hardware optimised, attention turned to the wheels and tyres, increasing from 20” on the regular Vantage to 21” as standard for the Vantage F1® Edition.

Developed specifically for the F1® Edition with Pirelli, it is the first time Vantage has been fitted with 21” tyres. Keep on trend with the latest kitchen designs from Kitchen International

If there’s one thing the pandemic has highlighted, it’s the importance of kitchen design. As the room in the house where most time is spent, kitchens in 2022 need to be multi- functional hubs of the home and include work spaces for children and working from home.

Award winning kitchen designers and retailers Kitchens International (KI), whose business has and is booming over the last 18 months, has seen the emergence of some distinct kitchen trends. Following these simple trends 1 0 4 | P R E ST I G E S C OT L A N D

KI Senior Sales Designer Angus Mackintosh says: “Designs haven’t changed radically over the last 18 months but there’s certainly more focus on what clients want in their kitchen and the designs must work as hard as possible to enhance every detail and benefit.

Gadgets and appliances have evolved hugely in the last decade to make home cooking and living easier, more efficient and more enjoyable. Top of the wishlist of most KI clients is the Quooker tap, which dispenses not just boiling water but can also dispense chilled and sparkling water too.

This is followed by wine coolers or separate wine fridges as the kitchen needs to be more than a place to cook but a place to entertain friends and family, enjoy everyday life and of course relax.

Angus Mackintosh adds: “Kitchen designs will increasingly go beyond the kitchen to include a home bar, whisky room, home cinema and living areas, which demonstrates the importance of using an experienced kitchen designer. The products we work with are so easy to customise and adapt and there is very little, if any, limitations as to what we can do, allowing us to offer truly bespoke solutions to any room in the house.”

Open plan kitchens with an island are still on trend as now, more than ever, this design allows the kitchen to offer a social space that is always high on clients’ wish lists.

Breakfast bars with stools make up most of KI’s designs with a separate dining table nearby with comfortable seating.

This then provides a casual dining/entertaining space along with a more formal area all within one room. Ian Goodbrand, KI Senior Sales Designer adds: “Gone are the days of hard bar stools with the trend now for padded, comfortable high bar stools, more akin to an armchair than a stool.”

Naturally with so much working from home, a dedicated work space is often a ‘must have’ in today’s kitchen/living areas. This can be just a small in-built desk or a larger multi media area. For parents with children KI would recommend a home schooling zone for parents to be able to oversee kids while everyone is in the kitchen either working or preparing meals.

One aspect most kitchen designs cannot overlook now is good extraction, especially as the kitchen is no longer just a cooking space. Coupled with layers of lighting and wine coolers these are often top of clients’ demands. KI Studio Manager Carol Cameron says: “More time at home means that you spend more time in the kitchen so certain elements are critical now. Extraction has evolved and most common is an inbuilt hob extractor, a downdraft one or one flush with the ceiling.”

Natural, industrial colours are on trend for 2022, with sprayed steel finishes becoming popular, along with real timber doors, earthy tones and copper finishes. High gloss kitchens are going out as darker, matt finishes and natural colours abound.

he new ceramic models are directly inspired by timepieces that the brand created in the context of its military programme in collaboration with selected squadrons of the U.S. Navy. The Pilot’s Watches Chronograph Editions “Royal Maces”, “Tophatters”, and “Blue Angels®” all feature the respective squadron patch on the dial and eyecatching details in the corresponding unit’s colour scheme.

Ever since IWC engineered the first Pilot’s Watch 85 years ago, the company has fostered an in-depth dialogue with pilots to precisely understand their specific needs and requirements. This exchange has been particularly crucial for developing the brand’s mil-spec service watches, like the Mark 11 for the British Royal Air Force. Today, IWC continues this dialogue within the frame of its military program, which emerged from the brand’s partnership with the U.S. Navy. Since 2018, IWC is licensed to work on watches for the entire U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aviation units, including Blue Angels® and the 247 active and 100 inactive squadrons. IWC has since collaborated with more than a dozen squadrons to create special editions that are exclusively available to present and former members.

Now, IWC releases three new chronographs in its Pilot’s Watches collection, which are directly inspired by the brand’s collaborations with U.S. Navy squadrons, marking the first time these designs are available to non-pilots. The annual production of these chronographs will be limited to 500 pieces each.

Strike Fighter Squadron 27, known as the “Royal Maces”, is stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Japan and forms part of Carrier Air Wing 5. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Royal Maces” (Ref. IW389107) is inspired by the military-exclusive edition IWC has developed with members of the squadron. The chronograph features a black zirconium oxide ceramic case. The pushers and the crown are made of Ceratanium®. The dial features the “Maces” patch at 6 o’clock and also has a yellow day-date indication. The yellow stitching on the strap, the tip of the chronograph seconds hand and the small seconds add details in the signature “Maces” colour. The case back is made of grade 5 titanium and features an engraving of the squadron’s F/A-18E Super Hornet jet next to the official squadron denomination “VFA-27”. Naval Air Station Lemoore in California is the home base of The Strike Fighter Squadron 14, nicknamed “Tophatters”. Having formed in 1919, VFA-14 is the Navy’s oldest active squadron. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Tophatters” (Ref. IW389108) has a case made of black zirconium oxide ceramic. The chronograph pushers and the crown are manufactured Ceratanium®.

Developed by IWC, this material is as light and robust as titanium and at the same time similarly hard and scratch-resistant like ceramic. The squadron’s patch with the classic top hat can be found at 6 o’clock on the dial and engraved on the titanium case back. The day-date display, the tip of the chronograph seconds hand, the small seconds and the stitching on the black calfskin strap add more details in the squadron’s characteristic red.

Inspired by the military-exclusive watch developed with Blue Angels members in Pensacola, the chronograph features a blue ceramic case. The bright blue colour is the result of mixing zirconium oxide with other metallic oxides. Here, too, the chronograph pushers and the crown are made of IWC-developed Ceratanium®. The iconic “Blue Angels®” crest with the U.S. Navy Wings of Gold is at 6 o’clock on the dial; the characteristic lettering is engraved on the titanium case back. Yellow details are provided by the chronograph seconds hand, the small seconds and the day-date display at 3 o’clock. This watch is fitted with a blue rubber strap with textile inlay.

Characteristic graphic expression further amplified by the natural reaction at the base of the fluorescent compound called to revive it. Highperformance Super-LumiNovaTM has been selected by the Panerai Laboratorio di Idee to revamp the collection. The new reference is characterized by the neon green of its retro luminescence, an unvarying evocative colour returning to the origins of the brand.

The mechanical heart of the collection is the P.9010 calibre, an automatic movement only 6 mm thick entirely designed and developed in the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. Q&A WITH LEAH WYLIE AT LAINGS

Tell us about your journey within the luxury jewellery industry?

I started in the industry at 18, working as a receptionist in the Head Office of a jewellers that was relatively small at the time, and I occasionally helped with the stock team. My passion for the role began there and I eventually moved on to become Assistant Buyer and Assistant Manager of the team. Eight and a half years later and one move to Glasgow, here I am at Laings still doing the job that I love as Buyer and being able to work with some of the most amazing jewellery in the country.

What qualities have benefited you in your role?

Examining gemstones and jewellery can be trained to a degree but having a natural eye for is what helps most. I’ve been in this industry for nine years now and although my skills have certainly developed over that time – I’d credit a natural eye for much of my ability.

What training helped shape your skillset today?

The best training I’ve ever experienced was visiting the International Gemological Institute (IGI) in the diamond capital of the world, Antwerp. The depth and detail in which you get to explore different gemstones is incredible.

I’d looked at inclusions in stones for so long already, but this training allowed me to learn exactly study gemstones under a microscope and, as a result, now being able to tell a gem’s origin from its inclusions is extraordinary.

What characteristics do you look for in a gemstone?

Buying coloured gemstones in person is so important. Gemstones aren’t cut for their brilliance like diamonds are, so the amazing varying colours are what makes them stand out and that’s something you can’t buy from a certificate.

Not only am I looking for good clarity, but exciting colours and hues that really make the gemstone special. With diamonds, it’s so important to see them in person because no matter how detailed a certificate is, you’ll never truly know the what the diamond will look like. For example, it’s critical to know the location of inclusions, what type they are and whether they will compromise the stone.

How did Richard Laing, Sales Director at Laings, help you in your role?

Working with Richard, you see his passion shine and how committed he is to providing the absolute best quality. It certainly rubs off on you – all I want to do is listen to him talk about diamonds. He’s set the standard that we work to with our diamonds and his knowledge has been invaluable. Ninety years after the emblematic Reverso was born, Jaeger-LeCoultre invites watch enthusiasts to enjoy an immersive cultural experience.

The exhibition “Reverso: Timeless Stories Since 1931”, offers visitors the opportunity to explore the history of one of the watchmaking’s greatest legends.

A unique and timeless expression of the Art Deco movement, the legend of the Reverso began on the polo fields of India, where the idea of a case that could be flipped over was born. With its revolutionary design and immaculate craftsmanship, the Reverso was immediately embraced by trendsetters from all walks of life, quickly transcending its original purpose.

Deftly combining form and function, it is one of the most recognisable watches in the world.

The “Reverso: Timeless Stories Since 1931” exhibition is an opportunity to explore the cultural and creative universe of this design icon, through an immersive sensory experience that embraces a pop-up boutique, a fascinating retrospective, an Art Deco café and a hands-on workshop.

Featuring a specially commissioned art installation by the American artist Michael Murphy, and a selection of famous Reverso watches, from the earliest time-only models to the new Reverso Hybris Mechanica Calibre 185, this original concept tells the story of Reverso through four key themes.

milestone Reverso watches, from the first 1931 model to the latest Reverso Tribute piece. A specially commissioned film transports the viewer inside the Manufacture JaegerLeCoultre, tracing each step in the creation of a Reverso through the words of the artisans and watchmakers themselves.

The Story of Style & Design looks at the Reverso watch from an aesthetic perspective. A quintessential example of Art Deco design, the rectangular shape of the reversible case is accentuated by clean lines and elegant curves; its dimensions determined by the rules of the golden ratio. To illustrate the stylistic evolution of the Reverso, examples for men and women are presented, each embodying its distinctive style in bold and often unexpected ways.

A Story of Innovation highlights the insatiable spirit of invention that characterises the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture. The Reverso was the result of a brilliant idea that took shape in the hands of French engineer RenéAlfred Chauvot, whose design was submitted to the Paris patent office on 4 March 1931. Since the 1990s, the legendary Art Deco watch has welcomed emblematic complications, including the first rectangular minute repeater, the retrograde chronograph and the Gyrotourbillon, as well as the double-dial Duoface and Duetto models. Enhanced over the years by new materials and numerous interpretations, this technical creativity has culminated in the extraordinary four-face Reverso Quadriptyque in 2021.

The Story of Craftsmanship pays tribute to the engravers, gem-setters, enamellers and guillochage masters of the Manufacture, revealing how they have unleashed the full

potential of the Reverso as a canvas for artistic expression and personalised messages. From historic timepieces, such as those belonging to Amelia Earhart and General Douglas MacArthur, to modern-day High Jewellery and miniaturepainted models, these pieces provide special insight into how the Reverso has itself been telling the stories of its owners, and will continue to do so for many years to come.

A special highlight of the exhibition, the Spacetime art installation makes its European debut in Paris.

Commissioned by Jaeger-LeCoultre from the American artist Michael Murphy to coincide with the 90th year of Reverso, it transports visitors through the three physical dimensions of space and the fourth dimension of time.

Viewing the installation is a bewitching and multifaceted experience that, in the words of the artist: “explodes into myriad elements that tell the story of the Reverso Tribute Nonantième and its inner workings”.
