Thoughts from our departing Head Girl...

My time as Head Girl has been an opportunity that I will be forever grateful for, and I’m sure the rest of the team would say the same.

This time last year, I said that I wanted to play an active role in contributing to a school community that people truly enjoyed being a part of. I’d hope that as a team we’ve impacted your school life in one way or anotherwhether that be through a cake sale that you supported us in, Student Leader meetings that you’ve attended, an assembly that we’ve spoken in or something else.

Our goal as a team was to have a noticeable impact on the school, be familiar faces to all students and for you to feel as though we represented you and what you had to say.

For me personally, being on the Head Girl Team has made me realise just how lucky I am to have attended Belvedere since Year 7. I’ve really been able to see how much teachers and staff throughout school care about our education and want us to succeed. Being able to

work with such friendly students throughout school really has taught me what Being Belvedere is all about!

One of my favourite parts of being on the Head Girl Team is being able to work with such a fantastic team, who do all they can to help out the school community.

I really would like to extend my biggest thanks to every single member of the team for all they’ve done this year.

I feel so lucky to have been able to get to know everyone on the team and find out what’s important to them.

I’d like to wish you all the best of luck in your time here at Belvedere. Thank you so much for all your support.

Hello everybody, my name is Yasmin Davies and I am your new Senior Student Principal. I would like to say a huge congratulations to Honor and the previous Head Girl Team whose amazing work I hope to continue throughout my time as Senior Student Principal.

It seems like only yesterday that I first embarked upon my journey at Belvedere, and so I can’t quite believe I am soon to be in my final year. Since joining the school in 2016 I have watched many students stand as Head Girl, and am honoured to play this important role in the community. However, this year is particularly exciting as a new legacy is soon to be created.

With the new Senior Student Leadership team, which better parallels the inclusive community here at Belvedere, I can only predict an even brighter future for the team.

Our new Senior Student Leadership team is a fantastic collective of students who genuinely want to make a positive impact upon Belvedere.

We have many new ideas that we are very excited to implement, and we promise to fully support all of our students in all aspects of academy life.

Principal’s thoughts on our departing Head Girl Team I have really enjoyed getting to know Honor, Ellie, Lily and Fatima and their team and been so impressed by their determination and their resilience - truly exceptional role models for our younger pupils.

This year our Head Girl Team has been nothing short of magnificent! Even though they haven’t had an easy time as Sixth Formers; missing their GCSEs, having highly disrupted learning and having to adapt birthday celebrations, driving test dates and part time work arrangements as a result of the pandemic, they have never faltered when it has come to fulfilling their academy positions and have left a lasting impact on Belvedere.

As with all teams, I have met with them every Monday and they have also had weekly meetings with Mr. Mason, Head of Sixth Form. These meetings are opportunities for us to talk about what is going on at Belvedere, for me to get some feedback from them and for us to discuss what we want to do next.

Honor always came along with her notebook full of points and ideas and the whole team always joined in with lively discussion around what they were up to I have really enjoyed keeping up with their news and views.

Notable achievements have been: several fund raising events, the harvest collection for the Whitechapel centre, the pre-loved uniform collection and the Culture Week, but they have also been on hand to help out at numerous whole academy and parent / carer events and, of course, played a central role at

Fancy an adventure?

One of the perks of being a Belvedere Sixth Former is that you are part of the GDST network which offers exceptional opportunities which are not available in other schools. One of the ways in which this is demonstrated is through the exclusive prizes offered by the GDST for our most capable and tenacious Sixth Form students. Prizes range from £100£1000 and over and are often made in subject disciplines, or to support travel or development in other areas such essay writing and supporting a student’s studies at university. Applying for these prizes helps to build students competitive mindset and the scholarship can have a life changing impact.

Travel scholarships are available for GDST Sixth Formers planning a Gap year or to travel before university.

Josie, Y13, was awarded £500 that she will use towards her Gap year in Bali and Australia. A great achievement!

Our support staff came together recently to support those suffering in Ukraine and collectively gathered over £200 worth of supplies to send over. Items included baby milk, nappies, shower gels, toothbrushes and toothpastes, sweets and first aid supplies.

The academy also donated a large amount of sanitary products. Our staff delivered the items to Mount Carmel Church and was shipped off the next day!

“I was pleased to be awarded a £500 travel scholarship from the GDST. Thanks to Belvedere for supporting me in my application. I am planning to use it to support community volunteering in Ubud in Bali. There are a variety of GDST scholarships and it is definitely worth applying. I wasn’t expecting to receive one but I am very happy I did.”

Karate success for Belvedere’s Taryn

In April, Taryn L, in Year 9, won the Shotokan Cup. This great news came on the back of Taryn winning the recent Grand slam in February, where she competed against not only her fellow England teammates, but also competitors representing Scotland and Wales too. Well done, Taryn!

Building for the future April 2022 marks the start of the next phase in the exciting building work that has been going on at Belvedere over the last few years.

Since I started as Principal in September 2019, we have taken ownership of the brilliant Forget Me Not building which comprises six new classrooms, a catering facility, break out space, toilet facilities and a new netball court as well as a newly resurfaced staff car park. Not only is the space popular with pupils and staff but is also proving to be an excellent part of our lettings offer. It is also a really good addition to our creative arts display space with art works from all ages of pupils and an opportunity to celebrate Belvedere in framed photographs from the past and the present. We have also been able to renew our very antiquated boilers courtesy of a successful CIF bid and also continue with the never ending project of maintaining the roof.

The Outer Hall has been refurbished and now serves as a living museum of both Belvedere School and Belvedere Academy and we have modernised one of our attic rooms, the old Drama Attic, to now house PSHE and Citizenship lessons.

This April’s task was to finally move Food Technology out of the basement of House 11 and into what was an

Art room. Most of this work happened over the Spring holidays but huge thanks to our Estates Team and Creative Arts staff who managed to get the rooms cleared by the end of the Spring Term. The new Food Technology room is fantastic - it has windows and french doors overlooking the back of the school so food lessons will be revolutionised with the addition of windows that open and fresh air!

Graphics is also coming out of the basement of House 11 and this September will be based on what is currently the ground floor of House 11 along with a new art room and a Creative Arts breakout space. Not to be outdone, Textiles will remain where it is but the main teaching room will be extended over the summer to allow more room.

All of this work is part of our desire to extend the working spaces of our massively successful Creative Arts subject areas. With the addition of opening out the current ground floor by taking out some walls, adding a picture window and replacing some walls with glass this will give staff and pupils a wonderfully open and

It was originally a convent and although work was done at the time to create teaching and social spaces; it is going to be even more effective once the project finishes.

Behind House 11 the ground level will be dug out so that the current basement will become the ground floor. Without Food Technology and Graphics in situ, the floor space inside will be opened up to create a

As mentioned, above the ground floor will become Creative Arts spaces for all year groups and we will start to use the main front door of the house as an additional entrance to the academy. The first floor will see quite a lot of work to create a new Student Support area. Our Learning Mentors will also be based here. The second floor will comprise of Sixth Form learning spaces and a space for independent study with tremendous views front and back over the Liverpool skyline.

A major change will be the lift. In the middle of House 11 the original staircase winds its way around a large lift shaft. This lift has not been used for many years and will now be replaced by a much smaller glass lift which will be used for accessibility purposes. The move to a glass lift and the replacement of some of the central solid walls with glass means that the House will be flooded by light and this is going to make a huge difference to the whole feel of the space.

House 11 does contain some marvellous original features: cornices, fireplaces, tiled floors, stained glass windows and the aforementioned staircase. We are retaining all these features and hope that the combination of the old and the new will create an inspirational learning and social space for all. I will include some pictures of the building in September’s newletter and we hope to offer families the opportunity to come and look around in the new academic year.

Outside, the lower ground floor will create a quadstyle outdoor space with steps down from the current

playground. The area will be landscaped and should provide us with an “outdoor classroom” opportunity once the whole project is complete.

In September 2022, we will embark on the construction of the 6 full sized classrooms which will sit at the back of the area behind House 11. These will look out onto the quad and have their own toilets and lift. They will also have a green roof. The whole project is due for completion in Summer 2023.

As with any building project, this one will come with some disruption; however, we have planned this to be as minimal as possible. The work within House 11 will be occurring during the summer once Year 11 and 13 have embarked on their examinations.

Our examination space is at the other end of the academy and so noise should not be an issue. When we come back in September 2022, we will be able to use House 11, so teaching spaces for the new year will not be affected. The building of the six classrooms should be similarly easily managed as they are at the far end of the academy in their own area with the construction company accessing the site via Prince Park. Major works will take place during holiday periods.

I will use the weekly newsletter to keep pupils and families up to date, but for now, we can’t wait to get started.

Captivating Cambridge!

At Belvedere we know our students are exceptional. They are full of character, with great intellect, inquisitive minds and an appetite for learning. Our students will go on to do wonderful things, and as such, we ensure that they are able to grasp every opportunity available to them.

They visited Trinity College, founded by Henry VIII, where they received a session on how to make their Cambridge applications stand out, including personal statement advice, as well as entrance exam and interview techniques. They also had a Q&A with current STEM undergrads on their experiences and their subjects. They even got to experience lunch in the Great Hall and a tour of the very beautiful grounds.

This term saw our first residential trip in over two years, and where better to take our students than the beautiful city of Cambridge! Fourteen of our Year 12 students, all studying STEM subjects and interested in taking them further to University, had the opportunity to visit Cambridge University and explore life at one of the world’s best institutions for education.

The next day, we began the day with a famous Cambridge tradition, punting along the River Cam. After a fantastic experience seeing Cambridge from the river, the students visited St John’s College for another tour by Mathematics PhD student Maria, where they even got to meet the Master of the College who encouraged our students to apply, telling them ‘We love smart women’. That afternoon our students got to explore the city, some visiting the local museum, some wandering the beautiful streets of Cambridge, visiting book shops and buying souvenirs, and most importantly some Jack’s Gelato to help with the warm weather! To end our trip we visited King’s College, home to the famous King’s College Chapel with the largest fan vaulted ceiling in the world. We had such a fantastic time in Cambridge, with memories to last a lifetime!

Now Festival Performance The Belvedere Theatre Company had the pleasure of performing at The Black-E Theatre in the annual Now Festival.

The festival aims to raise awareness of young people’s mental health. The pieces performed at the festival are created by the young people themselves and this year the topic needed to focus on the phrase ”What needs to change to bounce forwards?”

Our theatre company initially researched performance ideas to explore particular themes they found relevant and relatable for young people in the audience. They ultimately

came up with the decision to create a thought-provoking piece of theatre to highlight sexism against women to influence social change. The students wrote their own script containing emotive monologues and ensemble scenes focusing on the themes of gender stereotypes, grooming, body image and beauty standards to create a thrilling and moving performance of ‘It’s a man’s world’.

The piece was highly praised by the judges with comments on ‘the students professionalism and the fluid ensemble work’. The students demonstrated such talent and they were a credit to not only the academy but for all young people in the local community.

Chamber Choir Champions!

Following the success of our virtual Carol Concert, our students were desperate to get out there to entertain live audiences again; when Mr Deakin asked our Chamber Choir whether or not they would like to compete in the much-loved Wirral Festival of Music, they jumped into action.

On Saturday 26th March we met at Birkenhead High School Academy. The Chamber Choir entered Class 42, ‘Youth Choir’, and were tasked with performing two contrasting pieces. Our adjudicator was Robert Marsh, an award winning choral and orchestral conductor.

Our students’ performance of this was stunning.

Following this piece, the Choir transformed from a solemn ensemble to an old-fashioned, clerical group as they began their gospel piece, “Hail Holy Queen” from the hit musical Sister Act.

Our Chamber Choir captured his attention from the moment they set foot on stage; the students’ professionalism was noted in Marsh’s opening remarks, “Musicians are judged from the minute they walk on stage, and Belvedere did this “splendidly”. Their first piece, “You Will Be Found” from the musical Dear Evan Hansen, showcased difficult blending of harmonies and six-part writing.

The day ended on a high as we came first place in our category with a mark of 90/100. To top it off, this equated to an ‘Outstanding’ result, an honour which is only awarded to a select few performances during the whole festival. We thank everyone in the Chamber Choir for their dedication and commitment to rehearsals this year and are looking forward to next year’s festival.

Innovation Girls Workshop 2022 In the IT Department, two of our Sixth Form students have been successful in their application for an exciting opportunity to help build the ‘Metaverse’ on the Innovation Girls programme! Funded by Meta, Frankie Beckley and Erin DeCourcey will participate on the course which aims to shorten the workplace gender gap in IT focusing specifically on the economic space of the metaverse. Our IT Level 3 students have been specially selected, winning two spaces out of sixteen across the whole of Europe following a tough interview process. The panelists were especially impressed by our students’ already growing knowledge in immersive technology which they study as part of their A Level vocational course.

The Metaverse Course will run over a period of 8 weeks and the pair have been gifted an Oculus Quest 2 VR headset alongside funding for the course. They will work closely with some major companies and female industry experts to potentially help them become future

leaders and innovators in the Metaverse. Some of the opportunities they will receive include being introduced to systematic inventive thinking, understanding the early beginnings of Web 3.0/metaverse, learning 3D modeling in virtual reality and culminating in building a portfolio of creative activities whilst working on real business projects with Mentors.

Both students are enthusiastic to start the course and be part of such exciting, forward-thinking workshops.

I have always had an interest in immersive technology, and this has been a fantastic opportunity to explore the Metaverse even further. I feel very lucky to be selected for the course and I’m looking forward to meeting some great business minded female leaders.’

We look forward to hearing all about their progress and wish them both well. Frankie and Erin begin the course in mid-April and continue through the Summer holiday.

D of E Expeditions are Back!

The Duke of Edinburgh participants completed their first camping expedition this term. Although the expeditions were ongoing, this was the first overnight stay so they were very excited. Not even a nighttime temperature of 00C could put them off!

The Bronze participants completed a 2 day hike of around 14 miles, whereas the Silver participants did 3 days of walking and covered over 20 miles. An absolutely phenomenal achievement - especially when you consider they were also carrying tents, cooking equipment, food supplies and their belongings.

There will be another expedition in July, so we are all hoping it warms up by then!

Getting Out of the Classroom Geographers from a number of year groups have enjoyed completing practical fieldwork outside the classroom this term.

Most memorable has to be the Year 11 field trip to the River Alyn where GCSE Geographers put on their wellies and measured a number of river features over the different courses at Loggerheads County Park in North Wales. The group were very lucky as it was such a warm and sunny day, perfect field trip weather! Year 8 meanwhile, didn’t venture quite as far, when they studied vegetation in the outdoor areas of the school as part of their investigation comparing the carbon content of rural and urban trees.

Whilst Year 9 have been sent home with questionnaires they’ve created in lessons to study how the city of Liverpool has changed over time in their urban investigation.

We’re looking forward to planning trips in the summer term with years 7, 10 and 12…so watch this space!

In the mood for some flower photography?

Our Year 8 artists have been getting in touch with their emotions, and creating mood evoking bouquets in preparation for their final outcome at the end of an eight week project. They have been exploring how to create mood and atmosphere by taking inspiration from various artists and how they use colours, textures and shapes in their work.

This photography lesson is one of our favourites from the project - they learn lots of new skills and love getting creative.

It’s an opportunity for them to work collaboratively to select flowers, arrange a bouquet, choose a backdrop, and then explore how colour, subject, composition and light affect the mood of a photograph.

One of their photos will then be what they recreate using all the media and techniques they have explored throughout the project. They’ve all worked really hard and we’re very excited to see how their final outcomes turn out.

Aspirations for Oxford It is fair to say that all young people have different advantages and disadvantages in life and some may believe that some doors, for whatever preconceived reasons, are closed to them. In our commitment to all our Sixth Formers maximising their potential, this term has been an inspiring one for some of our Year 12 students hoping to apply to Oxbridge next academic year.

As well as the residential trip to Cambridge University, and the Be: Inspired Futures Lecture with Professor Matthias Dörrzapf, seven of our Sixth Formers recently headed down to St Peter’s College Oxford for a 4-day taster of life as a student at Oxford.

Organised through our partnership with Aspire Liverpool, our pupils spent a long weekend living and breathing Oxford university life alongside students from across Liverpool, at the prestigious St Peter’s College. It is fascinating to note that St Peter’s has a rich history with our city. Founded by Bishop Francis James Chavasse and his son Christopher Maude Chavasse, whom Chavasse Park is now named after, the college’s original aim was to provide a low-cost Oxford education for promising students.

Our staff also received specialist training on the application process and how to support our pupils moving forward with personal statements, mock interviews and admissions tests.

Lucy Whitfield, one of our Year 12 students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, had this to say on her experience: “Taking part in the Aspire Oxford trip was fantastic!

Not only was it inspiring to listen to leaders of their field talk extensively about their subjects but being able to first-hand experience the community that is created within an Oxford college was something I don’t believe I could have got from anywhere else. I gained an insight into life at Oxford, the studying and social side. It was also really fun to meet people from different schools around Liverpool with similar aspirations as you, so I would 100% recommend taking part in next year’s Aspire programme.”

The wonderful Aspire programme works with young people from across Liverpool to show them that Oxbridge can be for them, helps them navigate their way through the entry process and show off all their talent, skills, and hard work.

During the trip our Year 12 students attended academic sessions for their chosen fields, had bespoke workshops to guide them through the Oxbridge application process, and

Maths Problem-Solvers This term has seen a number of activities and competitions taking place in Maths. It started on Thursday 3 February when 132 of our Y9-11 pupils participated in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge; a 1-hour multiple-choice competition.

We were delighted that 46 of these pupils were awarded a certificate: 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 39 Bronze. This was a solid achievement and we are hoping for similar success in the Junior Maths Challenge for our younger pupils at the end of April.

During February half-term all Mathematicians from Y7 to Y13 were invited to participate in the MEM Challenge; a problemsolving competition with three different age categories. A number of pupils presented a good set of solutions that we were able to enter. We are eagerly awaiting the results of this.

On Thursday 3rd March, twelve of our Y12 Mathematicians attended a Problem-Solving Day with Sixth Formers from a number of other local schools. The pupils had to use their knowledge of everything they have learnt in Maths since

beginning their A Level studies in September and use it to solve very challenging problems! The pupils rose to the challenge showing resilience to tackle these problems and had an entertaining day.

On Thursday 17th March, we took two Y10 teams to North Liverpool Academy to take part in the annual Maths Feast Day. This day involved a number of local schools competing in four fun packed problem-solving rounds. Belvedere pupils scored highest in three of the four rounds, with an impressive 100% in one of them. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day and gained in confidence as a result.

A particular highlight of the term was World Maths Day on Wednesday 23rd March. Y7 pupils were enrolled in Mathletics for the day and competed against themselves and pupils from across the world in short Maths quizzes.

All pupils enjoyed the event with the top 10 achieving certificates. We even had one of our pupils scoring in the top 15% in the world!

Inaugural SWIRE Annual Student Conference MANCHESTER • MARCH 22 On Friday 25th March the Y9 Mandarin class were delighted to visit Manchester Grammar School for the Inaugural SWIRE Annual Student Conference. It was a unique opportunity not only to hear from some of the nation’s leading researchers into current Chinese affairs but also to connect with other Mandarin students from across the country.

Visiting speakers included a professor from King’s College London and the Spectators broadcast editor. They were treated to a range of topics from the impact of the Cultural Revolution to young Chinese people’s attitudes to social media and there was time at the end for a lively question and answer session.

Women in Science To mark Science Week 2022, some of our fabulous Year 10 attended Liverpool John Moores University and heard from outstanding female scientists from underrepresented backgrounds. This included Dr Manisha Shrestha, who is a Postdoctoral Physics Fellow specialising in ‘Massive Stars’ in our universe.

The students also heard from Sarah McDonald, a current PhD student studying Astrophysics. She shared her experiences and showed the students that you don’t need to be amazing at all your subjects to get where you want to be, and that there are many different paths to take!

The students finished off the day with a private showing of ‘Hidden Figures’, the amazing story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, three women whose Mathematical minds helped shape the future.

Mythbusters in STEM To mark International Women’s Day and Careers Week, our Year 11 students received a talk from some very inspirational women in STEM. They came to speak to us and bust some myths surrounding their professions.

They talked about their A Level choices and the various different paths into their careers, sometimes not picking a STEM subject at University, or even attending university at all.

The women discussed some very common myths surrounding women in STEM, and explained to our students that they are simply not true. Pursuing a career in a STEM subject will open the doors to a world of possibilities for our students, and there are many different paths they can go down. STEM careers are rewarding, exhilarating and can even help change the world. To finish, the women gave various pieces of advice to our students, which we hope they will remember for a very long time.

Business News The Business and Economics Department have had a busy few weeks collaborating with London School of Economics and GDST. On Thursday 24th March, our Year 12 LEAD students visited London to listen to successful entrepreneurs and pitch their own business ideas - “Pawganics” an organic pet treat company and “Small Joys” - a handmade chocolate company. The students were incredible and won praise and awards, including ‘Best Product’.

The following week we were visited by the London School of Economics as we hosted their Enterprise challenge, where business owners pitched to win their share of £20,000 investment. Students listened to the pitches and asked the entrepreneurs questions to help the judges make their decisions.

Awesome Y8 logo designs As we draw close to the end of our third Graphics carousel, it’s time to reflect on some of the fantastic logos made by our Y8 students. WOW! There are so many brilliant ideas being created - from sketches through to PROFESSIONAL looking final designed logos. There’s such a wide range and brilliant skills shown - this has to go over several posts to fit them all in!

Each student was tasked with creating an identity for a fashion company, and none had used the software, Adobe Illustrator, before - so these designs show an amazing development of their skills from the intro workshops we did, to being able to apply these learnings to their own design ideas.

Brand New World Belvedere continue with the ‘Brand New World’ programme, which is a project being run across six secondary schools in Liverpool. They recently had three artists pitch ideas to them and then discussed which artists they wished to work with.

There will be several sessions working with the artists to produce work that will be exhibited in a Liverpool gallery (or museum) in the Summer.

The students were very impressed with the work of local artist, Faith Bebbington. You may well have see one of Faith’s 3D pieces around Liverpool over recent years - if not, you probably have been wowed by the work she made for the ITV idents - her reindeer was a high profile piece over the Christmas schedule.

The students were very excited by the fact that Faith is a strong advocate for environmental designs, and a lot of her work reuses materials.

Faith’s take on her work - “My artistic practice initially stemmed from having cerebral palsy, a disability that has made me curious about how people and animals move. I explore this through figurative sculptures playing with balance, the process of falling, and capturing sequences of movement whether human or animal.

In 2014 my artistic perspective shifted radically after surviving ‘terminal’ cancer! I stopped working with fiberglass resin as my main medium and focused on more sustainable, environmentally friendly ways of working, particularly reusing plastics by breaking the component parts down to then reconstruct them.

I’m developing new lines of inquiry such as 3D recycled street art like the Super Rat made with 100’s of plastic milk bottles; alongside re-using waste items such as bottle lids and crisp packets to explore patterns in natural geometry, cellular structures and mandalas.”

The premise behind the project is to focus on using visual art to explore young people’s hopes and dreams for the future, inclusivity, identity and wellbeing; and for them to express their voice. The project intends to engage Liverpool City Council in the work and will be inviting them to respond to the messages we hear from young people.”

By participating in the Brand New World event, not only do students get some fantastic cultural capital and get an amazing opportunity to work on a unique piece of art, they also can use this experience as part of their Arts Award Bronze Award a fantastic opportunity for all involved.

Belvedere celebrates International Women’s Day

From challenging gender stereotypes to celebrating women’s achievements, every year Belvedere recognises this historic day. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day was #BreakTheBias, so at Belvedere we spent time encouraging teachers and students to discuss what bias is, increasing awareness, and taking steps toward gender equality. Year group assemblies were held throughout the day with form activities encouraging pupils to speak out in favour of a world that embraces and celebrates diversity without discrimination.

In the outer hall pupils were asked to nominate an inspirational female, whether a mum, librarian, YouTuber, friend or political leader and write their name on a section of bunting, coloured yellow or blue, in solidarity with the women of Ukraine.

Abi Cox, Mental Health Coordinator, said ‘It was a great opportunity to see the wide ranging nominations made by our pupils and recognise the diversity of women they are inspired by.’ Emily Morris and Kshamya Mittal, Y13 Mental Health Ambassadors, both spoke of how recognising female role models is beneficial in empowering students to fight for equality. Their roles within the school have enabled them to raise awareness of the fact that we all have mental health, and promote ways for everyone to look after their own.

It was a colourful and inspiring day with much on which to celebrate and reflect.

Safer Internet Week Belvedere celebrated the international Safer Internet Day on Tuesday 8th February. We decided that because online safety is so important to us at Belvedere, that we would celebrate it for the whole week, rather than just one day.

The week started with an assembly focusing on gaming and managing online relationships. Students were taught about the term ‘online disinhibition’ and how often when online, you lose your inhibitions and say whatever you like, which can sometimes be hurtful and disrespectful to others. We also learnt about how we can protect ourselves when gaming by turning off our headset, disabling the chat feature and blocking and reporting any inappropriate comments or users.

On the day itself, Year 12 Student Leaders created a giant 8ft iPhone.

Students were invited to come and write online safety tips all over the phone. The phone is now displayed in our Outer Hall, acting as a constant reminder of how to stay safe and be kind online.

Speaking of kindness, a brand new display named ‘10 ways to spread kindness online’ has been created in one of our busy corridors with lots of ideas of how we can all spread some love and kindness when using social media.

Tips ranged from sharing inspirational

content and liking a friend’s photo or commenting something really positive on a photo or post.

Thursday saw the whole school involved in online safety workshops led by an online safety specialist. Alan MacKenzie spoke to each year group in turn about a range of issues related to online safety. Our students were particularly interested in the increase in online scams and just how difficult it is to spot cybercrime online. They all felt better informed and educated at the end of their workshop.

Fun was to be had in Lower School Computing lessons where students were challenged to make a short jingle warning others of some of the dangers of being online - many of the creations were hard hitting, some humorous, but all very informative!

Parents got involved in our Safer Internet Week activities too. Each evening they received a different ‘infogram’, a top tips sheet with inside information on how to best support their child online. Y13 pupil Hana was commissioned by Mrs Taylor to create a mural on the wall leading up to the Music Department. First of all, Hana had a meeting with Mr Deakin before going away and looking for inspiration and creating some sketches. Once Mr Deakin saw her ideas, she presented them to Mrs Taylor who gave her the green light to paint it on the walls! She spent the day sketching the design, painting the base coat before adding the vibrant colours. The wall art has not only brightened up the staircase but it will inspire creativity in our pupils.
