Halls of Encounter

A third space for heritage led regeneration for artistic communities in Bristol

Fifth Year Final Project

Tutors: Lawrence Duck and Shankari Raj

Unit: Regenerative Vision

In Bristol, the city’s heritage narrative has been predominantly shaped by the industrial achievements of its founders, often overlooking its significant involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. This narrow perspective on heritage, shared by both institutions and individuals, has resulted in communities feeling marginalized by the city’s infrastructure.

The proposal delves into Bristol’s contentious history, underscoring the necessity of addressing and reflecting on the past for community reconciliation and healing. It emphasises that confronting historical conflicts is essential for fostering understanding and unity among diverse groups.

The “Halls of Encounter” serves as a space for artists and visitors to engage with a monument that acknowledges both sides of Bristol’s heritage through incorporating the proposal into an existing industrial facade, ultimately fostering healing through recognition and exposure.

AN ARCHITECTURE OF ADDITION AND COMBINED MEANING

The proposed structure simultaneously respects and transforms the meaning of the existing by employing a self-sustaining curved brick wall that resonates with the factory’s architectural language.

REPRESENTATION AND COLSTON AS SYMBOLIC METHODOLOGY

The proposal sits within the context of Colston’s toppling, the desecration interpreted as a brutal representation of Bristol’s intolerance towards a narrow definition of heritage. Hence, the statue’s interpretation is transformed by the actions inflicted on it.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The program aims to address the historical marginalization of Black creatives by providing venues for previously overlooked works to be displayed. Rentable spaces for local and international artists foster innovative and creative hubs.

Conflict resolution spaces are available for visitors to express and process their emotions through confrontation and reflection. These two elements— artistic reflection and confrontation work together to promote healing and regeneration, offering both complementary and contrasting approaches.

THE EXISTING FACADE OF DEMOLISHED FACTORY
THE ADDITION COMPLIMENTING THE EXISTING
For the model, the existing wall was made with plaster cast to represent masonry, and modellling the proposed was achieved with 3D printing.

The proposal utilises the existing facade of a demolished factory that faces the Feeder Canal. Circulation spaces are the emphasis of the floor plan, with curved brick walls that invite inhabitation internally and externally. The conflict resolution spaces are circular to encourage confrontation, while also being offset from one another, creating visual interest and spatial hierarchy.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION SPACES

The Amphitheater is a place for gathering, debate, and activism and exists within the public realm of the proposal.

Meanwhile, the Forum has a circular footprint conducive towards debates and mediation between larger groups while doubling as a lecture theater and indoor performance space.

The construction of the undulating wall was investigated through a 1:50 detail model with individually laid bricks. Such a structure is possible through the use of bespoke reinforced bricks and steel rods that follow the curvature of the building as its geometry will lend to its structural integrity.

DETAIL SECTION THROUGH GALLERY

Circulation spaces with the existing and proposed wall flank the gallery spaces, allowing moments of reflection and confrontation.

EVOLVING A FACADE

The proposal adopts a facade that represents Bristol’s industry with intent, transforming an iconic existing wall while retaining its heritage.

AN ARCHITECTURE OF ADDITION

The loaded symbolism of both the old and new inform one another to create architecture that reflects a more complete narrative within Bristol.

CHALLENGING BRICK AS A MEDIUM

The proposal takes notes from Eladio Dieste by employing a brick wall that recalls the existing structure, and experiments with the monumental characteristics of brick and how it can evoke familiarity while influencing human interaction within the rhythm of its geometry.

A centre for the community and woodland enterprise of Treherbert

The village of Treherbert resides in the South Wales Valleys, a place with a long history of coal mining that contributed to its burgeoning economy as well as the resulting destruction of its landscape. The unit engages with the people of Treherbert, as well as the community partnership group ‘Welcome to Our Woods’ during a time where there are growing efforts and sentiments towards reclaiming the valleys that surround them.

This is bolstered by the ongoing transference of publicly owned woodlands from the Welsh Government to the local community.

The proposal aims to support Treherbert’s future growth by incorporating a design that reduces operational costs and generates products that boost the local economy and overall well-being.

The building is centered around a main corridor that acts as its spine, with adjoining spaces designed to accommodate various activities. Flexible, multi-use areas ensure the building meets its diverse programmatic needs effectively.

THE REPORT AND MAGAZINE

MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND REPORT

As a unit, we coordinated community engagement events which included value allocation games and exhibitions that aimed to connect with the wants and needs of the locals. A report and magazine summarised the findings and it was an invaluable primary resource to inform a design that accurately met the needs of the people, and was a way to give back to the stakeholders. Sketches of the community members I talked to were included within the magazine.

COMUUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The structure employs a Ty Unnos frame system with a SIPS panel facade, enabling the use of local timber with a lower strength grade compared to wood used for CLT and glulam. This approach utilizes a low-value resource to create a sustainable, low-impact building system.

BOX BEAM SHEAR PLATE CONNECTION

Architectural Placement Works (2022-2023)

HOME EXTENSION IN PENARTH

Led a live-work home extension for an acupuncturist located in Penarth, with responsibilities that include client liaison and preparing design options.

Modelled the site and proposal for a paragraph 80 house in the Cotswolds to be presented to the Gloucester Design Review Panel for planning approval.

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN CARDIFF

Draughted architectural drawings and created renders for this multi-story, mixed use housing development located in Cardiff.

DEVELOPMENT IN PENARTH

Internship Experience (2020 -2021)

ONE-OFF HOUSE IN KUALA LUMPUR

Draughted layout proposals and curated material palettes for a high end one-off house in Kuala Lumpur.

Draughted floor plan proposals for a four story office retrofit in Kuala Lumpur with AutoCAD. I also liaised with an array of consultants and suppliers including air conditioning specialists and landscape architects.

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

The brief was a transit oriented development situated between an apartment complex and a train station. I designed an integrated ramp and alfresco transit space to service food and beverage stalls. Ramps are the focal point to provide open and accessible circulation that draws people to the seating areas and exhibition spaces. The development is currently under construction.

I designed a cafe facade equipped with pick up station, outdoor seating, and planters built into the entrance steps. Additionally, I assisted in the cafe’s vibrant interior design, creating plans, sections, and elevations for contractors. The cafe has since been completed.
