Sails of Daydreams

Spring 2024

During the summer of 2023, I participated in the Volume Zero Tiny Library Design Competition. This allowed me the opportunity to design a space of max 3230 sq ft in a rural area for those who have limited access to learning and learning resources. For the submission we composed a poster showcasing the work in its entirety.

The project takes place in Douna, Burkina Faso. This is located within West Africa. Here the education system is not the most important value but business and financial advancement. That being said the library I built took values that they are taught to care about and placed them within an educational institution to also encourage their knowledge base to grow.

New Hope

Transitional Refugee Center

To design is to first understand the target audience. We created a community center for those displaced from their homeland.

This project required we study reasons for displacement, such as natural disasters, as well as the journey one may take during the process of leaving all they know behind.

Displacement of Person(s)

The refugee is named Ilhan Omar. Her story follows from Somalia to the United States. War and persecution drove her family out of her home country and onto her way to the United States. Throughout that journey she now experiences islamophobia.

The Refugee

Situated on Camelback and 17th Ave was a site imagined to be for a space dedicated to a refugee transitional center. With that, there were certain guidelines given with the flexibility of adding two additional programs.

Being that this was a group project, my partner and I decided to include both a Workshop and a Meditation and Worship Space.

New Hope Refugee Transitional Center was designed with a focus on children and families.

As stated before the project was partner based. I worked with Jesus Nava. His work will receive credit via his email being listed.

The provided programs are as followed:

-Outdoor Canopy Meeting Area*

-Office and Therapy Rooms

-Cafeteria*

-Food Market*

-Classroom

-Daycare

The project is centered around conscious and unconscious healing mechanisms to allow for refugee families to find comfort in an unknown space based on forced relocation. Upon entering the site on the NW side, there is a flower garden that allows for families to plant their own flowers and plants. In this space there is a presence of aloe, rosemary and lavender. These plants are known for the mental, physical and environmental impacts. Likewise, this same ideals were taken into account with building materials being stone, rammed earth and wood.

Our project is a meeting space that introduces repetition as it relates to the materials and emotion, creating a memorable craft display for individuals to indulge in personal projects and explore the interests of others through the concept of Thing Theory.

Sails Of Daydreams

“Thing Theory”:

“Through interacting with an object, individuals can derive new meanings, and similarly, objects can acquire new meanings over time and transform. In essence, the interaction between humans and objects blurs the line between subject and object, resulting in a collective and intertwined web of interaction, which can lead to an eerie feeling.”

The project was designed with the intentions of allowing the users to express their identity through being able to change the orientation. Ideally it would be suitable for both indoor and outdoor use so it allows the user to become one with the installation, regardless of the setting.
