The Brooklyn community places a high value on education and expects its schools to prepare students for success beyond the classroom. A well-rounded education goes beyond standardized tests, which is primarily what the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) measures with the annual school report cards. The purpose of this Quality Profile is to provide a more complete story of how our schools perform in the areas that matter most to the Brooklyn community.

Brooklyn Superintendent The Brooklyn City Schools is a dynamic, PreK-12 public education institution dedicated to becoming the school district of choice where academic success is fostered by community collaboration and diverse educational opportunities. Fostering strong partnerships with all stakeholders, including parents, community members, as well as local businesses and organizations, provides resources that support the District’s mission to encourage, prepare and empower our students. The dedicated teachers and staff of the Brooklyn City Schools are focused on meeting the unique learning needs of every child through engaging and effective instruction. The collaborative efforts of the entire Brooklyn City Schools community are reflected in the District being awarded an A grade for the second straight year in the areas of Progress and Graduation Rate on the state report card.

The 2018-2019 Quality Profile is an annual publication of the District which spotlights the many achievements made by staff and students in the Brooklyn City Schools. In addition, the Quality Profile provides a thorough summary of six key areas: Academics, the Arts, Student Leadership and Activities, Student Services, Parent and Community Involvement and Fiscal Stewardship.

As a companion to the state report card, the Quality Profile moves beyond standardized testing data to give a more comprehensive overview of the quality education provided by the Brooklyn City Schools. While state standardized testing certainly plays an important role in evaluating academic progress, the District believes that the overall value of an education involves more than letter grades.

City Schools Class of 2019 Spotlight 2018-2019 • $235,145 earned in scholarships and grants • 450 post-secondary credits earned by Class of 2019 BEFORE ENTERING COLLEGE through University of Akron program • 65% of seniors will start at 4-year university or begin at a 2-year school and transfer to a 4-year university after completing general education courses

Academic Opportunities and Achievements • 2018-2019 State Report Card awarded the District A’s for the second straight year in the areas of Progress and Graduation Rate • Recognized as 2018-2019 Project Lead The Way Distinguished District Award for demonstrating a commitment to increasing student access, engagement and achievement in its middle school level PLTW programs • Middle School Robotics Team earned First Place Finish at 1st Annual Polaris Palooza Robotics Competition • 2019 graduate Annette Malcolm named Polaris Career Center Student of the Year • Students in grades 11-12 can receive career training in a wide range of fields at Polaris Career Center, which includes Automotive Technology, Culinary Arts, Construction Trades, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Dental Assisting, Medical Technician/ Fire Training, Welding Technologies, and Precision CNC Machining • Polaris also offers on-site programs in Brooklyn that include Medical Detectives, Automation and Robotics, Design and Modeling, Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics, and Computer Science and Engineering

• Through GE Girls program, 6th grade girls engage in hands-on, STEM based learning activities under guidance of female scientists •

Grades 8-12 are offered a course sponsored by AVID® (Advancement via Individual Determination), a national college-readiness system that provides students with critical thinking, literacy and math skills in order to prepare them for success in high school, college and a career

• Students have the opportunity to earn up to 17 college credits through courses taught by credentialed Brooklyn teachers, including College Algebra, College Composition I and II and Public Speaking • World Languages offered include Spanish and Chinese with AP programs available for both Spanish Language and Chinese Language and Culture • 8th grader Brianna Slawinski and 7th grader Laila Mourra qualified for the Northeast Regional round of the Power of the Pen competition • 8th grade student Katrina Gaspar finished 5th at the Cuyahoga County Scripps National Spelling Bee, the highest finish ever for a Brooklyn student • Targeted investment by District to ensure technology such as Chromebooks are available in every classroom

Arts Brooklyn City Schools 2018-2019

Brooklyn City Schools has a proud tradition of excellence in the areas of visual and performing arts which help to promote creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

• High student participation in Drama Club and Stage Crew clubs, which produced Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka in Spring 2019 • BHS student Nina Lunde joined a select group of students to have artwork selected for display at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, OH • Senior Corrin Tarver-Moore received a $1,000 scholarship to study Theater at Ohio University in the fall of 2019 • Deandrea Barkley selected to perform in elite Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony at Severance Hall • Brooklyn High School Marching Band boasts consistently high level of student involvement • Fine and performing arts courses include band, choir, drawing, painting, photography, studio art and theatrical design • Eight students were inducted into the National Art Honors Society

• Senior Seth Majewski captured PAC Wrestling Championship in weight class and signed letter of intent to continue education and athletic career at Defiance College (OH) • Senior Marchello Carrossellia advanced to 2019 OHSAA Bowling State Tournament, was named to 2nd Team Division 2 All-Ohio High School Team and received athletic scholarship from the University of Pikeville (KY) • Hurricanes Coed Hockey Team won Blue South Division Championship for third consecutive year • 8th grade Girls Basketball team won second consecutive PAC Championship • Brooklyn High School experienced a 42% increase in student participation in non- athletic related groups and events • Successful launch of several new student groups including Key Club, Debate Club and History Club, as well as the launch of the very first E-sports tournament

Parent and Community Involvement Brooklyn City Schools 2018-2019

The Brooklyn City Schools place a high importance on developing and maintaining a strong, meaningful and mutually beneficial relationship between the District and community stakeholders. Below are examples of how community partnerships benefit our students.

• Partnership with Ridge Park Square and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce for”One School, One Book” initiative promotes literacy and provides every PreK-3 student a free book • Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce supports the District through several programs, including: Taste of Brooklyn event which raises money for student scholarships Brooklyn Cares Holiday Wishes Program, conducted in partnership with Brooklyn Community Cares, sponsors local families in-need with donated food items and gifts Generous support of teacher grants and the “Hire-an-Intern” summer program • City of Brooklyn and Ridge Park Square support annual Bike Rodeo and Touch a Truck event • Daily, on campus presence of School Resource Officer provided by Brooklyn Police Department • Annual Shop with a Cop holiday event provides local children in-need a shopping trip and meal with members of the Brooklyn Police officers • Through PTA and PTSA, parents can partner with the District to support students through fundraising and volunteer efforts

The Brooklyn City Schools are committed to providing a full range of services to ensure that all students receive individualized instruction, enrichment and support to meet their potential.

• Brooklyn Preschool At a Glance 1. Serves children ages 3-5, including those with disabilities 2. Classrooms are equipped with hands-on materials that promote STEM education and higher-level thinking skills 3. Staff is fully trained in Conscious Discipline®, a comprehensive approach to social-emotional development 4. Brooklyn Preschool has been recognized by the National Network of Partnership Schools for our family engagement efforts 5. Awarded five stars, the highest possible level, by Ohio’s Step Up to Quality rating system for meeting learning and development standards and exceeding licensing health and safety regulations 6. Universal Preschool Grant from Cuyahoga County to support preschool services and provide tuition scholarships for families •

Youth Mental Health First Aid training is provided to all District staff. Additional student service programs include Response to Intervention, Wilson Reading and Fundations, Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, as well as Online Safety and Bullying reporting services

• After school programs include Kids are Totally Super (KATS), a tuition based program for children of working Brooklyn parents, and the Hurricane Cafe, created in partnership with the YMCA for students in grades 4-7 • Stay Safe, Speak Up hotline for reporting of potentially threatening situations
