ABOUT ME

This portfolio depicts the work I have done during my time as an Interior Design major at the University of WisconsinStout. It displays the growth and the progress that I have made, as well as the projects I am proud of. Over the past few of years, I have put time, energy, and effort into my projects and have learned so much because of it. Reflecting on my work has shown how far I have come as both a student and a person.

MILWAUKEE LIBRARY

YOUmedia has decided to expand its digital learning program to locations throughout the Midwest. I was hired by YOUmedia to design a team space focused on digital learning at one of the Milwaukee Public Library locations. This is a space where teens can hang out, get help with homework, experiment with design software in a range of disciplines, record music, and participate in a variety of digital media activities and workshops. The requirements for this project were to include an information desk, library shelving, computer zone, social zone, lounge zone, performance zone, media zone, recording studio, podcast booth, reading zone, study nooks, and an IT closet. I was given a floor plan and all the functional requirements must fit in that floor plan.

ITALIAN RESTAURANT

ETHNIC: A restaurant that focuses on one culinary tradition.

Concept: A restaurant with a menu that has a distinct tradition and will require research to identify those traditions. The interior atmosphere must reflect the selected tradition and culture without the use of clichés. Examples: Indian, Japanese, Thai, Chilean, Italian, etc.

Program: Dining seating for 80+, primarily 4 tops with some 2 tops and two 6 tops, lobby seating for 4 adjacent to 2’ x 2’ hostess stand (with coat closet.), a bar with seating for 6 (min), a lounge near the bar with seating for 6., bar must include a 2’ clear drink pick-up area (no bars stools at drink pick-up), 1 waiter/bus station (4’ x 5’) located a reasonable (far) distance from kitchen (4 lineal ft. counter min.), design must meet ADA and IBC code requirements for this type of occupancy (including bathrooms)

ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTIONS INC. WORKPLACE

OFFICE DESIGN

Environmental Solutions Inc. (ESI) has asked you to design their new offices (see floor plan.) ESI requires that you design a space reflective of the ESI Mission Statement: “Working as a team, we are committed to resolving global environmental issues related to water and air quality and thus, improving the quality of life for many.”

The design solution must be based on goals developed by each student in response to the program provided and the mission of ESI. The client (ESI) requires that the proposed design enhances individual AND team-based work. ESI does a good deal of work with visitors and donors at the new offices and employees will also travel to perform consulting duties. Any proposed design should work to support these activities.

RETAIL - BATH/BODY PRODUCT LINE

Brand concept options:

1. Natural, sustainable, and low impact (non-standard packaging as with Lush)

2. Colorful and clean (aesthetic and scent)

Product Line requirements:

Bath bombs and salts displayed both loose and in gift packs - 15’ lineal display (min), body lotion in bar and bottle form - 10’ lineal display (min), shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in product in bar and bottle form - 10’ lineal display (min), body wash/soaps in both bar and bottle form - 10’ lineal display (min), focus area for seasonal/special products near the cash wrap area - 12’ lineal display (min)

MILWAUKEE LIBRARY

After-school programs promote positive youth development and offer a safe space. They can support social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development, along with reducing risky behaviors, and provide a safe and supportive environment for the youth. Attending after-school programs leads to improvement in class. Participation, better adjustment as youth move to the next phase of schooling, increased school day attendance and participation, which reduces school dropout rates.

After school programs leads to increased adult supervision which makes youth feel safer and reduce being left unsupervised. Working families and businesses benefit from after-school programs by ensuring that their youth have a safe place to go while parents or guardians are at work.

After-school programs also reduce the homework battles at home. They also create a sense of belonging, a way to make new friends or connect more with peers with more adult supervision. Some after-school programs can make learning more fun with offering classes in areas like science or computers. Youth may be willing to try new things and take more positive risks which can lead to high self-esteem.

This space will feel comfortable and inviting to all, mainly focusing on the youth. It will feel a home away from home for the youth. The space will include many different after school programs. The library space will be a collaborate space along with having the original library feel. Places to learn in a community or individually will be incorporated. The design will include colorful spaces with unique elements. The atmosphere will be cheerful with the different colors and unique features being used. The descriptive words I am going to incorporate in the space are safe, comfortable, cheerful, colorful, and unique.

Visual/Aesthetic Goals

The office will be a collaborative space for all with the use of a conference room per department. I want the space to feel peaceful and create a space of health and happiness for the employees. want to incorporate some sense of home for the employees with my furniture choices. I will replace some florescent lights with chandeliers and other warmer types of lighting.

Project Narrative Goals

I want the space to feel like another home for the workers. The individual workplaces will help create a sense of home. There will be a choice of traditional desks along with standing desks and bar-height tables. Infusing color into the design will help create the space more welcoming and fun.

Employee Performance Goals

Some goals for employee experience is that there will be daylight for all. I think there is a need for some hierarchy in the office. I will have comfortable seating for the employees and make sure there is enough space for it. The common spaces will feel inviting to all the employees for a break from their work with lounge furniture, a cafe, and focus rooms.

FURNITURE DESIGN

SOFTWARE USED

In the course of human evolution, sitting on a found or built structure is a relatively new idea. Our short-in-stature earliest ancestors lived and moved so close to the ground that an intermediary object was largely unnecessary. The earliest known seating devices discovered in artifacts found in central Africa suggest that seating had more to do with social status than comfort or stature. Earthly gods and goddesses, patriarchs and matriarchs are theorized to be the users of an elevated surface to sit and engage with their underlings in an implied separation of elevation and power.

Sitting is one of the most basic of human postures for resting, relaxing, working, playing, focusing, observing, conversing, interacting, etc. Seating is one of the most archetypal typologies in furniture- stools, roosts, recliners, dining chairs, loungers, etc. It is also one of the most humanistic. Seating products are anthropomorphizing with human amenities- arms, legs, backs, seats, feet, etc… our most basic of anatomical elements, attributes and structures.

19

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS

By the end of this course students will have produced a partial set of professional quality C.D.’s. The set will be broken down into individual sheets which will be red-lined and given back for correction. Full sets will be red-lined and given back for final corrections. A final set of revised/corrected C.D.’s will be due. Students will also keep track of work time and turn in time sheets every 2 week

- Having the office be by the front doors, have to walk through the whole gym to get to the office.

- Like having 24 access to the gym with a key fob

- I am a member of this facility, when I first signed up I had no clue where I was going and the office was hard to find as a new member. Due to the facility being a 24-hour gym you need a key fob to get in so when I signed up I had to wait for someone to open the door to get in.

OWNER

As the owner my wife and I would like our fitness gym to be spacious and inviting to all of our members. The placement of our zones and equipment will be ideal for all members and their certain workout routines. Our office is close to the entrance which helps with not having new members walking through the whole space to get to us.

MEMBER - WEIGHT LIFTER

When I am going to the gym to workout I am mainly in the zones with weights and strength equipment. The set up for these zones are important to having an effective workout and not having to go far for the equipment I need. It is all in the same area which helps with finding what I need. It is a spacious facility but the zones are very well thought out.

MOTHER/MEMBER

As a mother that enjoys working out but do not have the time due to childcare. I enjoy this gym because it offers childcare and I am able to work out more than I did before. The space that I used is set up in a way that I can have an effective workout in a short amount of time. The classes at this facility is available at many times throughout the day so a working, mother like myself is able to participate in these classes.

5 FUNCTIONAL GOALS

1) Childcare area having sound absorption materials.

2) Cardio area, free weight area, and strength machines to be adjacent to each other.

3) Childcare have access to their own restrooms and don't have to walk through whole space.

4) Placement of equipment accommodates many different types of workouts and users

5) Natural light as a key component.
