Abingdon hailed as “wonderful” in quest for green energy resources ABINGDON Hydro is a “wonderful example of a combination of local innovation and community cohesion”. That’s the view of Nicola Blackwood, MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, as she welcomed a government minister to the region. Greg Barker MP, minister for Climate Change, visited the site of the proposed project on Tuesday. The minister hailed the area as being at “the heart of the drive to a low carbon economy”. Ms Blackwood and Mr Barker met with the Abingdon Hydro project secretary, Richard Riggs, and other members of the Hydro team. Abingdon Hydro received planning permission from Vale of White Horse District Council last month and is now seeking to

attract sponsorship and future investment. Ms Blackwood, who also recently welcomed secretary of state for Climate Change Ed Davey to the site, said: “I was delighted to welcome the minister to the constituency again. “We are justly proud of our commitment and contribution to the low carbon energy sector. “Abingdon Hydro is a wonderful example of this combination of local innovation and community cohesion - we must keep the momentum going.” Mr Barker added: “The combination of world class [research and development] and innovation as well as the clear commitment of the local community is a powerful combination.” During his visit to Oxfordshire, Mr Barker also took in Oxford Photovoltaics’ headquarters to launch new facilities at the site
earlier this week. The company, based at Begbroke Science Park, has unveiled new fabrication and test facilities, including a fully equipped cleanroom for cutting edge solar technology. Mr Barker said: “Oxford Photovoltaics’ new research and testing facility is putting the UK at the forefront of the international market for solar, providing state of the art resources to test a pioneering approach to harnessing the power of the sun and putting us in pole position to compete in the global race for jobs and growth.” “This was an ideal opportunity to demonstrate for the minister exactly why Oxford University continues to lead the world in solar PV generation,” said Ms Blackwood. “The new Photovoltaics lab will not only support further groundbreaking research in the production of solar technology, but will also create new jobs in the University itself.”
