ROARING TO GO! Dragon boat crews to race on Sunday

PREPARATIONS are ready for the annual Dragon Boat Day in Abingdon, set to take place on Sunday. Eighteen teams will take to the Thames near Rye Farm Meadow and battle it out for the coveted winners’ trophy and medals. The day, as ever, is being organised by the Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper.

Racing will start at 10.30am, and continue through the afternoon. Teams will race each other in a series of heats, before the two fastest go head-to-head in a grand fi nal in the afternoon.

Peter Davis, one of the organisers, said: “Preparations have gone well - we’re ready to go, we’ve got a lot of things up and running. “The fairground’s arriving on Friday and Saturday, and it’s all coming together. “It’s just about the largest thing going for the town, and raises a lot of money for different chari-

ties – that’s the purpose of it. “It’s a great day out for everybody, and a great spectacle as well. “Every year is a good one, except when it rains! But we’ve largely been very lucky, except for last year.” The racing is normally held in May, but flooding last year • Continued on page three
