WEST Oxfordshire District Council have approved a plan which will see it continue contributing to the global effort in tackling climate change. Cabinet members voted last week on the Low Carbon and Environmental Plan, which looks at key actions that can be made locally to help reduce environmental impacts. tion. Cllr David Harvey, cabinet member for environment, said: “It is important that we all do our bit in helping to try to tackle climate change. “It seems all the more pertinent to be launching this new plan at a time of continuing extreme weather in the UK, with ongoing flooding problems. “The council has taken big steps in reducing our own carbon footprint, while working with and supporting communities, local action groups and individual residents and businesses. “We hope that this new plan clearly sets out that we remain committed to leading by example, while providing support to help

others play their part.” Other actions set out in the plan include supporting local policies on climate change by reducing emissions by 50 percent by 2050 relative to 2008 levels in Oxfordshire. It is also supporting residents and businesses to make energy efficiency improvements, continuing to reduce waste and maximise reuse and recycling, and promoting sustainable transport. The council will continue to work to lower its own emissions by three per cent annually until 2015, as part of a target set by Climate Local Oxfordshire, which commits the county’s local authorities to manage climate impacts.
