• (Left to right) Grandparents Mervyn and Dorothy Bell, mother Judith, sister Eloise, father Lea Perry, grandmother Jacky Perry and family friend Darran Brown and (inset) Freddie Perry TEN-YEAR-OLD Freddie Perry ran into the road before he was hit by a car driven by a teacher at his sister’s school, an inquest heard yesterday. The boy was playing with a friend on a grassy area near his home in Oxford Crescent, Didcot, when he ran into the road between a van and a people carrier on September 10, Oxfordshire Coroner’s Court heard. Freddie died from head injuries at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Headington the next day. Grieving parents Lea and Judith Perry said they feel no anger towards Didcot

Girls’ School teacher Joanne Napper, because the incident on September 10 last year was a tragic accident. Mr Perry said: “It’s what we expected, it was an accident. “We don’t feel angry at all to the lady driving, she has a lot to deal with. “It’s hell, but nothing can bring him back.” Evidence from Freddie’s friend , who cannot be named for legal reasons, said

the 10-year-old was on the phone when he ran into the road. Freddie, who was a year six pupil at Stephen Freeman Community Primary School, was hit by the Nissan Micra driving towards Wantage Road. Forensic collision investigator Andrew Evans said Freddie’s vision would have been obscured by the van, while Ms Napper, who was travelling “in the range of 20mph” would have only had half a second to react. “There was nothing the driver could do to avoid this collision,” he said. A cause of death was given as cerebral

edema, as a result of a head injury. Oxfordshire Coroner Darren Salter gave a verdict of accidental death. He said: “Speed is something that is often upper most in the mind when it comes to a collision of this nature. “Although on this particular occasion, the general consensus is that Ms Napper was not speeding and travelling at around 20mph. “There was really nothing she could have done to avoid the collision.” Freddie’s parents, sister Eloise, 11, grandparents Jacky Perry, Dorothy Bell and Mervyn Bell and family friend

Darran Brown were at the inquest into his death yesterday. Mr Perry added: “Freddie was amazing, he was an inspiration. “He doted on both of his sisters, Eloise and Rhiannon, who has Down’s Syndrome. Freddie used to say his job was to look after his sisters. “Freddie was quiet and a mummy’s boy and very intelligent, he was always reading. He would teach the class about Harry Potter. “The week he died he came home and he was star pupil. He fi nished on a good one. Bless him.”
