Dispute breaks out over neighbourhood plan bid Call for urgent safety measures on A34

CONFUSION has erupted over the future of Wantage’s Neighbourhood Plan following a decision by town councillors to change its author. At a Wantage Town Council meeting last week, it was decided that deputy town clerk Katie Buckingham and a Vale of White Horse District Council planning officer were to re-write the plan, removing the responsibility from steering group chairman, Julie Mabberley. Designed to give residents more of a say over the development of their town, the fi rst version of the plan was rejected by the Government’s Planning Inspectorate on August 6, sparking the need for it to be revised. Ms Mabberley, who has led the

By George Welch plan for the past two years and organised town consultations, said the plan had been taken out of residents’ hands, with there being “no role” for volunteers or residents any more. But town mayor, Steve Trinder, claimed the residents would still be involved. Ms Mabberley said the decision to allow two paid professionals to take over the writing of the plan, which was only opposed by two votes at the council meeting, was carried through because the town council was “very eager to get the plan through as quickly as possible”. CALLS for urgent safety changes to the A34 have been made following a second meeting of the A34 Action Group at Chilton Village Hall,

near Didcot, on Monday night. Oxfordshire County Council Ian Hudspeth, who attended the session, said the A34 was “unfit for purpose”.

Newbury MP Richard Benyon also gave an update on his work with Wantage MP Ed Vaizey and Oxford West and Abingdon MP Nicola
