Welcome to ‘normal’ town By George Welch THE south Oxfordshire town of Didcot has been hailed as the most ‘normal’ town in England. Didcot, arguably best known for its power and railway stations, represents England more than any other place, according to number-crunching statisticians at ASI Data Science. The railway town is closest to the national average across a range of fields, including opinion, experiences and lifestyle. The group came to its conclusion after analysing 11 fields of data, including: age distribution, ethnicity, marital

median. Town mayor Steve Connel welcomed the town’s new title. He said: “When a caring community like Didcot is named the most accurate representation of normal life in Britain, then we are living in a truly great nation. “I don’t know that we are entirely normal – it’s hard to decide what is normal. For me, I think we’re just a microcosm of what the UK is. “We have almost every group – every

ethnicity, age group, working group and people just get on with their lives and try to do everything they can to make the community better.” ASI Data Science produced the report after being inspired by the 1947 movie Magic Town, which tells the story of a man who stumbles upon a small town he believes is perfectly representative of the nation’s views and uses it to conduct consumer research.
