While the white stuff set a pretty scene in Wallingford, it caused havoc on the county’s roads with several collisions on the A34. SCHOOL CROSSING GETS GREEN LIGHT Pupils write to MP to make school run safer

WALLINGFORD schoolchildren have successfully lobbied their MP to improve the safety of a zebra crossing. Fourteen pupils (right) who make up the school council at Fir Tree Junior School in Radnor Road, were so concerned about the crossing in neighbouring Station Road that they wrote a letter to Ed Vaizey. And last Friday they received confi rmation that Oxfordshire County Council would modify it from road markings to a humped crossing during half-term.

Headteacher Nilofer Khan was delighted to receive the news and says parents are always complaining about near misses when crossing the road. She added: “We are really pleased. “One of our parents got knocked down and a Wallingford student got injured. On a daily basis I get parents coming in and saying ‘another near miss’.

“Even though the zebra crossing is there it is not visible and regulars on that road miss it.” Mr Vaizey shared the children’s concerns with Wallingford county councillor Lynda Atkins, who also received a letter from the school council. He said: “They wrote me a very clear and sensible letter setting out the reasons for wanting changes, which I was able to share with their county councillor so that between us we could get things moving.” • Continues on page 3
