Shell out for tours of ammunition factory TOURS of Banbury’s First World War munitions sites will take place again this year. They ran last year to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of the factory that supplied the front line with nearly four million shells and much of the British Army’s stock of mustard gas shells. Organised by Banbury Museum, tickets are now on sale for the tours on Saturday, May 20, at 9.15am and 2.45pm priced at £15 each. Banbury Museum’s events and exhibitions manager Dale Johnston will again lead the tours. He said: “Every day thousands of drivers come along the M40 motorway past Banbury, not realising that

The remains of the site have been described by English Heritage as being of national and international importance

right next to them was the ammunition factory.” Mr Johnston said the remains of the site had been described by English Heritage as being of national and international importance. In 1915, the British Army faced a shortage of ammunition when demand exceeded production. The new Ministry of Munitions ordered factories to be built across England. National fi lling factory no.9 was built on the outskirts of Banbury and at its peak employed more than 1,400 local people. The factory was bought by Cohen of London in 1919 to break down surplus war ammunition. It closed in 1924.

Go-ahead given for new primary school in town By Samantha McGregor PLANS for a new primary school in Banbury have been given the green light by councillors. Outline proposals for the new oneform entry school at Southam Road, were approved by Oxfordshire County Council last week. The school, which will cater for

pupils aged three to 11, is expected to open in 2019/20, and will also include a 26-place nursery. The project is being entirely funded by developers. The council said it will now start looking for an academy provider to run the school. The proposed catchment area will take in the immediate Southam Road

development – where 600 homes are planned – but would also meet the growing demand for places for children in north Banbury. Oxfordshire County Council’s schools organisation and planning manager Roy Leach said: “Alongside a number of other parts of the county, the Banbury area is undergoing significant housing growth, and through

our planning work we are ensuring local school places continue to be available for every Oxfordshire child who needs one. “We are well-placed to meet this challenge, both through our work with existing schools to identify expansion opportunities, or delivering entirely new schools where local housing growth demands their provision.”

Banbury’s development has resulted in several new schools being built in the past 15 years. A school at the Longford Park development, at the southern edge of the town, will open this September. Plans are also in the pipeline for a new secondary, which is understood to be part of the Salt Way development – another new housing estate planned.
