Six appeal for United in cup competition Sport

Grant will kick start new all-weather football pitch £212,000 for grassroots level By Eva Astreinidou

SPORTS fans can soon enjoy playing on a new state-of-the-art pitch in Witney thanks to a cash boost of more than £210,000. The grant will transform the existing pitch in Gordon Way which is prone to waterlogging into an improved allweather third generation artificial grass pitch capable of ‘weathering any storm’. The pitch will help to provide safer and more flexible training for its users, which includes pupils from Henry Box School and local partner clubs including Tower Hill FC, Witney Vikings Youth FC, the Witney Wanderers FC and Ducklington FC. Councillor Jeanette Baker, cabinet member for leisure and health, hailed it as fantastic news. She said: “It will provide the best surface for people playing football and other sports. Hopefully it will attract even more people and help boost health and fitness in the local community both now and in the future.” The £212,044 grant comes from the Premier League and FA Facilities Fund, which is delivered by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. Andy Earnshaw, business and facility development manager at the

Oxfordshire FA, said: “This is a huge step forward for football in Witney and a much-needed facility to support the excellent work of our grassroots clubs in the town.’’ The Football Foundation has awarded nearly £580million nationwide to improve grassroots sport and strengthen the connection between football clubs and local communities. The charity has previously awarded 163 grants across Oxfordshire towards grassroots sports projects worth £20.8m. By providing high-quality facilities, along with coaching, the investment is also hoped to attract new players to the game. Paul Thorogood, chief executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Congratulations should go to the West Oxfordshire District Council for working with the Oxfordshire FA to secure this Premier League and The FA Facilities Fund grant.” A spokesperson from WODC said work will start in the short-term, but there is not yet a confirmed opening date for the pitch.

and music for all to enjoy. Originally the feasts were food days held twice a year to allow the master weavers to pay the tuckers for the work they had done for them in the last six months.
