Building on a commitment to greener, healthier future By Samantha McGregor A HEALTHY environment and energy efficiency are two of the key attractions at a new eco-business centre. Work has started on the centre at the Elmsbrook settlement in Bicester marking the second phase of a co-working initiative. Last week contractors Yesterday (21st), broke ground on the zerocarbon business centre. It will lead the way in providing local office space for individuals and small businesses in a highly sustainable building, meeting the standards of the North West Bicester Eco Town. Cllr Lynn Pratt, Cherwell’s lead member for estates and the economy said: “Cherwell is fully committed to investing in new projects that have a strong social, economic and environmental impact. “This building has been carefully designed to maximise natural resources, provide a healthy environment, and to be as energy efficient as possible.” Among its features will be extra insulation, natural and mechanical ventilation to maintain a comfortable temperature as well as high levels of fresh air throughout the year. Rooftop solar panels will also be installed, and the design will help minimise energy and water
consumption. The location means people can also travel to work in more sustainable ways such as walking, cycling or using public transport. Ben Ramsay, operations director for KIER Construction said: “Over the last year we have been working with Cherwell District Council and the team to bring this exciting, innovative facility to this point. “Our focus is now to build and integrate the concept seamlessly into the new Bicester Eco Town. “We will be engaging with the local community to ensure our construction activities are well communicated and that we create opportunities to contribute back into the area.” The 1,400 sqm building will have three floors and accommodate up to 125 people. Building work is due to be completed by next autumn. Earlier this month the council started work on co-working office space in Bicester giving entrepreneurs, small businesses and those who are self-employed a new base. An empty retail unit at Franklins House, in Pioneer Square, is being transformed into a co-working space for up to 67 people. Co-working offices are built around the idea that people who work from home, are self-employed, or who have started small businesses, work together in a shared environment exchanging ideas and building a community.
