NUMPTYGATE Former councillor’s rant at local authority revealed A REPORT exposing a former councillor’s description of Newbury Town Council as a ‘numpty council’ – revealed as part of an investigation into alleged bullying at the authority - is set to be discussed tomorrow morning.

Ruwan Uduwerage-Perera, then the Liberal Democrat deputy leader of the town council, admitted he used the term in front of officers and councillors on May 19, 2014.

It came ahead of a council meeting about making a claim against engineering fi rm Costain for damage caused to Victoria Park, with councillors and officers speaking beforehand.

Corn Exchange opens after ÂŁ100,000 revamp THEATRE fans will get their first glimpse of the newly refurbished Corn Exchange in Newbury when it reopens for the new season on Saturday.

Builders have been working since the end of July to carry out a ÂŁ100,000 upgrade to the box office, downstairs cafĂŠ and upstairs balcony bar.

The venue starts its autumn programme of events this Saturday, but the project won’t be fully complete until October 1.

Grant Brisland, interim director at the Corn Exchange, said: “It’s an exciting time for us but there is a lot of planning and detail required to achieve the ambition. “However, overall there is a great level of anticipation and excitement for the next chapter.

“And with this week marking the installation of the new flooring, the ground floor bar and box office, as well as the decorators continuing, it is safe to say the countdown to the reopening has truly begun.�

The demolition of the interior of the building was completed earlier this month, while decorators have been in over the past couple of weeks.

Grant added: “The decorators started off by removing the paint

work to the ceiling trusses, as we are exposing the original metalwork and have since continued to prepare the walls for their new colours. “Not wanting to give too much away for the colour choices, the pallet for the space will broadly be quite neutral. “The electricians have started rewiring and adding new lights to the ground floor spaces and this all makes way for the tilers to start fitting the new floor.�

News Bites Stockfest ends STOCKCROSS: More than 50 classic cars on display at the Stockcross Village Show marked the end of Stockfest at the weekend.

The annual two-week festival at the village started on August 17, and came to a close on Monday.

Events have included the Big Music Weekend - playing host to numerous bands and musicians – as well as workshops, treasure hunts and a dog show.

Attempted murder trial set for January A NEWBURY man accused of the attempted murder of a woman in Inkpen last month is scheduled to stand trial in January.

Martin Buckland, of Skyllings, appeared via prison video link at Reading Crown Court yesterday for a preliminary hearing.

He did not enter a ‘not guilty’ or ‘guilty’ plea, and a trial date has been earmarked for January 25 next year.

It comes after police were called to a house in Robins Hill, Inkpen, on August 6, where they found a 48-year-old woman had been stabbed.

Buckland was subsequently arrested and charged the following day.

He was due to appear at Reading Crown Court for the preliminary hearing on August 17, but this was delayed until yesterday • A trial has been set for January at Reading Crown Court because of court availability.

WEST BERKS: Residents are being asked to give feedback on the district’s libraries as part of a West Berkshire Council consultation.

Questions include the type of services used at libraries, how satisďŹ ed visitors are with the service, and what they would use them for in the future.

The consultation is running until October 11.

Centre’s award THATCHAM: Travel website TripAdvisor has given a certiďŹ cate of excellence to the Nature Discovery Centre in Thatcham after it was described by one visitor as “a little treasure of a placeâ€?.

The centre, operated by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), hosts a number of nature-related events and exhibitions overlooking the Lower Way lakes.

The centre was given the accolade last month.

Advisors called in to boost child services THE Government has ordered that private advisors continue working with West Berkshire Council to improve its poorlyrated services for vulnerable children They have been working with the council to form an action plan for progress since June 5, after a damning Ofsted report in May ruled its children’s services ‘create or leave children being harmed or at risk of harm’.

The plan includes a £600,000 boost for training and new staff, and a recruitment campaign to fi ll vacant jobs.

It was submitted to the Department for Education last week.

The council’s executive member for children’s services, Lynne Doherty, said: “It’s hard to be told that your perfor-

mance isn’t good enough but we accepted the report’s fi ndings and recognise the steps we need to take to improve things for children and their families.

“The efforts we’re making will leave us in better shape than we were and we value the involvement of the selected advisors.”

Minister of State for Children and Families at the Department for Education, Edward Timpson, wrote to the council last Wednesday, naming consultants from private company Exploring Choices to work with them.

The ‘improvement notice’ rules two advisors will work with the

council until the Secretary of State is satisfied it is not needed.

Reviews are to be conducted at least every six months.

Mr Timpson added: “The council is required to deliver the actions included in the improvement plan within 12 months of the publication of this notice.”

Inspectors visited the council’s children’s services in March and concluded they were ‘inadequate’ in a report in May. It added that the performance declined in 2014 and “there are widespread and serious concerns about the protection and assessment of children who are most vulnerable to harm”.

The last time the council’s children’s services were rated by Ofsted in August 2012 they were deemed adequate.

Writing in the report, Ms Howlett said: “I have no doubt that the phrase ‘numpty council’ was used and I believe the phrase ‘numpty officers’ was also used.

“I accept that there are far worse words but context and tone are critical here – Mr Taylor was offended and upset by the behaviour and attitude as much as the words.”

WEST BERKS: A decision on final sites listed for house building across West Berkshire in its development plan document (DPD) is to be made in November.

It allocates sites across Newbury, Thatcham and surrounding villages to build homes as part West Berkshire Council’s ‘core strategy’.

For its core strategy the council needs to build at least 10,500 homes from 2006 to 2026.

Sandleford Park and Newbury Racecourse are two large developments already in the core strategy, but the smaller development sites are to be named in the DPD. A West Berkshire Council document prepared for a meeting on Thursday reveals the DPD is due to be decided in November – one month later than expected.

SSE plans to relocate 275 staff from town ALMOST 300 jobs are set to be moved from Thatcham after major employer SSE announced it is leasing a new building in Reading.

The energy provider revealed last Thursday that about half the posts at its office in Pipers Way, Thatcham, would be going to the newly-built offices in Forbury Place, Reading.

SSE, which was formerly known as Scottish and Southern Energy, will take possession of the new building in January, with more than 1,900 employees moving there from across the area by the end of 2016.

Currently 550 members of the fi rm’s staff work in Thatcham, but SSE plans to move about 275 of them to Reading.

No job losses are expected as a result of the move to the new headquarters.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, chief executive of SSE, said: “We have looked extensively for the right building in the right location to provide a high-quality environment from which to support effi-

cient operations for customers.

“The new building gives us the space to bring together over 1,900 SSE employees in one place and provide a modern flexible working environment.”

Mr Phillips-Davies added: “SSE is a major service provider in the south-east of England and this is an excellent opportunity for us to bring together our staff from across the company in a new central hub from which to build further.”

As well as the jobs in Thatcham, members of staff from Basingstoke and its current base in Reading will also be moving to the new offices.

But Richard Crumly, leader of Thatcham Town Council, believes that with half of the Thatcham office going to be vacant, it could lead to jobs being created in the town.

He said: “It seems that there will be no job losses, and there may be job vacancies available for our people rather than this being seen as an unemployment problem.

“I don’t read this as being a threat to local employment in its present format at the moment but nothing is for certain for the future I suppose, but my impression is that SSE is on the up rather than the down.”

Plan to bulldoze offices for homes set to be approved

News Bites 265-home plan THATCHAM: Councillors will be debating plans for 265 homes on the northern edge of the town at a Thatcham Town Council meeting on Thursday.

The planning and environment committee is expected to discuss the outline planning application for the homes west of Heath Lane and north of Bowling Green Road from 7pm at the council’s Brownsfield Road offices.

The plans, submitted by developers Croudace Strategic to West Berkshire Council last month, include allotments, a sports pitch and pavilion, a play area and flood alleviation ponds.

Triathlon date • How the proposed housing development would look PLANS to bulldoze two empty office blocks in Newbury town centre to build 59 homes could be granted planning permission at a West Berkshire Council meeting tonight.

Councillors are due to debate the proposal to convert Northcroft House and Avonbank House in West Street into sheltered housing at the western area planning committee.

Officers were recommending approval for the plans by developers Churchill Retirement Living in a report published last week. The site covers 0.26 hectares and lies about 50m from Northbrook Street shops.

The three- and four-storey building would have a warden and 18 parking spaces – a drop

from the 28 existing spaces.

Some residents have aired fears about the loss of parking and size of the building.

As part of the consent, Churchill would be asked for a £222,000 contribution towards affordable housing elsewhere.

The plans were approved in principle at a western area planning committee meeting in June, but the fi nal decision was postponed as West Berkshire Council fought government planning guidance in the High Court – which might have affected the development.

The council’s legal action was successful, meaning the plans remained unaltered.

Work closes road THATCHAM: The road from Brimpton to Crookham will be shut from Monday until November for high-voltage cables to be installed for SSE. Crookham Road will be closed from the junction with Brimpton Road to Thornford Road.

Work will start at the Brimpton village end of the route. The closures will end just east of the Traveller’s Friend pub, but carry on west under traffic light control. Diversions will be in place.

MORE than 130 homes could be built near Tadley after Basingstoke and Deane’s council received two separate planning applications.

The plans to build 82 houses in Bramley on land south of The Street and 50 homes on a site near Sherfield Road have both been submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

The two proposed developments are a reaction to the council’s emerging draft local plan, which requires the village

by Tadley to accommodate at least 200 homes.

At least 33 of the homes built as part of the £8m project in The Street would be earmarked as ‘affordable housing’ if planning permission was granted, with developers Hollins Strategic Land (HSL) talking up the seven-acre site’s location.

A HSL spokesman said: “This sustainable residential scheme would include homes of varying sizes, types and tenures that will help to contribute to the vibrancy and vitality of the village community and economy.”

The £5m development in Sherfield Road would contain a mixture of two-, three- and four-bedroom houses, with project designers Richards Urban Design vowing that all types of

residents would be catered for.

Architect Colin Richards said: “We believe the design has been delivered with a strong vision and will reinforce the character of Bramley and the wider area, while providing for starter homes, families and the elderly.”

Bramley and Sherfield borough councillors Chris Tomblin and Nicholas Robinson both questioned the developments and predicted they would not be popular with locals.

“We’re like a rag to a bull for opportunist developers right now thanks to the uncertainty of not putting the local plan in place yet and the previous people in charge are to blame for that,” said Cllr Tomblin. “It’s sad to see, and I think the people of Bramley are going to be furious about these applications.”

Cllr Robinson added: “We need these houses like a hole in the head. We seem to have a development frenzy right now, and you have to wonder if it’ll ever end.”

Decisions on both plans by the council’s development control committee are due to be made

by November 2.

ACROBATIC dancers wowed crowds during an Africanthemed day at Newbury’s Kennet Shopping centre.

The Black Eagles performed a high-energy mixture of gymnastics and limbo dance to traditional music at the centre in Bartholomew Street last Wednesday.

The trio, originally from Tanzania, tumbled through hoops and held aerial poses learnt on the streets of Dar-es-Salaam.

Simon Thobias, from the Black Eagles, said: “It was a wonderful day, we really enjoyed performing there.

“There was a really good response from the audience, so hopefully we will be back next year!”

A selection of exotic African animals such as pythons, giant millipedes, hissing cockroaches and large spiders also visited the centre for shoppers to hold from 11am to 4pm.

NEWBURY: Final details of plans to turn industrial buildings into nine homes in Sandleford were submitted to West Berkshire Council last week.

Permission was granted last year despite strong objections by Greenham Parish Council, but detailed plans need approval.

One two-, four three-, and three four-bedroom homes would be built from four buildings on the site at Sandleford Farm off the A339, Newtown Road.

The application by Grange Homes Berkshire Ltd details plans to build a sound barrier, new access onto the A339, and requests a change of use from industrial to residential.

New footpath WEST BERKS: A planning application to build a new footpath at Heads Hill along Thornford Road was submitted to West Berkshire Council last week.

The plans, also by the council, would connect the path on the north side of the road from a footpath on the east to the A339 roundabout on the west.

A small section would be on common land.

News Bites 23,000 visits WEST BERKS: More than 23,000 people have visited West Berkshire Museum since it re-opened one year ago.

To celebrate it is hosting a free family fun day on Sunday, September 6, with activities running from 10am until 4pm including making animal finger puppets.

Since reopening after a revamp last August in Newbury’s 17th Century Cloth Hall, the museum has staged 14 exhibitions of more than 1,500 objects. Manager Victoria Barlow said: “What a great year it’s been.”

Timid pooch ready for brave new world

A COWARDLY Collie has conquered his fears enough to be rehomed, after more than two years of training at Newbury’s Dogs Trust charity.

Ollie was a 15-month-old puppy when he arrived at the centre in Plumb’s Farm, Hamstead Marshall, in March 2013.

He was terrified of noise – including the sound of cars, music, stranger’s voices, and of other dogs barking.

Deputy head of training and behaviour at Dogs Trust, Steve Goward, said: “Ollie’s fear of noise has proved challenging to overcome, especially in an environment where the sound of a dog barking is commonplace, but he has been a joy to work with and is really making strides to conquer his fears.”

He added: “Although he is still a nervous chap, he is now much better equipped to cope with new surroundings and will make a loving pet in the right home.”

As a puppy shortly after arriving at Dogs Trust he was snapped up by a new owner.

But Ollie found it too difficult to cope with the noises of a busy home and was returned to the centre five months later.

Staff at Dogs Trust have since worked with him using rewardbased training to get him used to strangers and introduce him to everyday noises.

Rehoming centre manager at Newbury’s Dogs Trust, Nicki Barrow, said: “Ollie is an adorable boy who has come on leaps and bounds but still has a way to go before he has totally overcome his phobias.

MAKE-UP and hairspray spilt from an overturned lorry across the A34 near Newbury last Wednesday shut the road for more than 15 hours.

Drivers faced severe delays and were diverted through Newbury after the lorry crashed through the central reservation barrier from northbound to southbound at about 6.40am.

It collided with cars and tipped onto its side, spilling its load of toiletries and blocking the road southbound and one lane northbound between the A4 near Speen and the A343 near Wash Water.

Highways England, which manages the road, said: “Further enquiries and initial survey of the scene revealed that the HGV had crossed over continuing to travel up the embankment on the southbound carriageway before turning over.

“Thankfully the driver of the vehicle did not appear to be

News Bites Man treated ROOKSDOWN: Firefighters from Basingstoke Fire Station were called in the early hours of last Thursday to tackle a blaze at a Rooksdown flat.

A man in his mid-20s had to be treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, while other residents were evacuated in the incident at 2.30am in Park Prewett Road.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue and Hampshire Constabulary have launched a joint investigation into the fire’s cause.

Mill history talk WHITCHURCH: Basingstoke Discovery Centre will hold a talk about the history of Whitchurch Silk Mill next week.

The mill is one of the town’s most historic buildings and silk has been woven there for almost 200 years.

Former paramedic Mr Olive knows all about the devastating virus, having lost 21-year-old daughter Elizabeth to the illness while training to become a nurse 28 years ago.

And with injections now being offered by GPs to 17- and 18-year-olds as part of the MenACWY vaccination programme, the 78-year-old wants to get the message over.

“Meningitis is on the increase, but there seems to be some reluctance among younger generations to have vaccinations,” he said.

“It’s so important that if anyone is showing any of the symptoms that they get help and not just assume that they’re OK.” Meningitis is a viral infection

THREE men have been charged by police in connection with a number of recent frauds in Alton.

Hampshire Constabulary has received 11 reports of attempted courier fraud in the last two weeks – with elderly people particularly being targeted.

MUCH has changed in the pub trade since the smoking ban in 2007 and many would argue the demise of the traditional English pub was a result of this. Thousands of pubs have closed across the region, some sadly are now corner shops, housing or convenience stores. I do recall frequenting various establishments pre the ban for a drink and something to eat and asked ‘smoking or non-smoking’ and an invisible wall was supposed to have separated those that ‘did’ and those that ‘did not’, often causing friction from diners (and smokers) alike!

Pubs are a vital part of local communities, so those that have survived have done so by changing with the times,

with fresh ingredients, many of which are locally sourced.

They have also installed a Lava grill for cooking delicious steaks and fish. All the steaks and roasting joints are 21-day matured, sourced from the Highlands of Scotland and South West England, supplied

by Vicars of Ashampstead.

There is something on the menu to cater for all taste buds, from tempting starters to mouth-watering desserts and ice creams. Starters include a seafood platter and a charcuterie board, offering a selection of cured meats direct from Italy.

Main courses include panfried sea bass and seared breast of duck. Paninis and bagels are a ‘lite’ snack option available at lunchtimes.

Everything on the menu is prepared on the premises, with fresh ingredients, many of which are locally sourced. and the main component has been food, whether top notch or traditional, it’s all about the ambience, value for money and a fine dining experience.

The Spotted Dog in Cold Ash has undergone many changes, especially over the last 12 months including a £250,000 refurbishment following a major fire. The renovation now boasts a large drinking and eating area, a re-fitted kitchen and a new bespoke solid oak bar.

Owner Piero Pagliaroli, along with his head chef John Cowan have worked hard to create a new menu which not only offers traditional English fayre, but many continental dishes and are delighted with the positive feedback about the quality of their homemade food. Comments posted on Tripadvisor ® have resulted in the pub winning a certificate of excellence and are now listed in the top three in the area with clientele writing about friendly staff, attentive service and fantastic food.

Portions are generous and booking is advisable, however, staff will go out

I was invited to sample a variety of dishes and went along on a cold wet August Monday, with my husband, who is partial to some good ‘home cooking’ and loves his pasta! We had a warm welcome from Piero and his staff and were seated in the bar area (our choice) which was light and bright and spotlessly clean. Despite being early evening, the pub was extremely busy, and it was lovely to see several families enjoying a meal together. I would have preferred to sit outside in the large mediterranean style patio area with BBQ in situ, but the British Bank Holiday weather made that option impossible.

Having perused the menu and specials board, I didn’t know where to begin, so much choice, so I was delighted when Piero suggested that he would surprise us and bring a selection of starters, mains and desserts, including some new dishes he’s been experimenting with. The current theme for Monday nights is ‘Italian night’ and samples did not disappoint.

The textures and flavours were delightful, every dish was beautifully presented and smelt and tasted truly wonderful, so much so that my husband said he’d like to eat here every night of the week! We were presented with so many dishes, including Bolognaise Soufles, Tricolore (baby mozzarella balls, beef tomatoes & pesto, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil), a mixed seafood salad, Supli Al Telefono (stuffed rice balls with a bolognese sauce and mozzarella centre, coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried) and Pasta Frutti Di Mare, a seafood

and pasta dish which was just outstanding. We ate our way through so many different dishes, there was absolutely no room for dessert, which was a shame as I was looking forward to the sticky toffee pudding, but that will have to wait for another day.

There was a constant flow of customers all evening and by 7.30 there was barely a seat left in the house which created a lovely atmosphere. I spoke to some of the clientele to get some feedback, which was all very positive. One couple had driven from Basingstoke for the second day in a row, having had the Sunday lunch yesterday and were back for the Italian night which they thought was absolutely amazing.

Food is served all day, every day from 12 noon – 9pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday lunch is served from 12 noon to 6pm. The pub is warm and welcoming and offers something for the whole family – so well worth a visit!

Council considers combined authority AN IDEA to create a large combined authority for Hampshire has been labelled as a “wonderful opportunity for change” by a borough councillor.

The move would see powers and funding devolved down from central government to the county council and each of the area’s borough and unitary bodies.

Among those affected would be Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, who met up last night after the Observer went to press to debate whether or not to take the proposal to the next stage.

SUTTON SCOTNEY: The final touches are being made to the long-awaited refurbishments to Naomi House children’s hospice in Sutton Scotney.

The £4million project began in 2014 to ensure that the hospice could accommodate the latest medical equipment needed to allow children with life threatening and life limiting illnesses to receive emergency and end of life care at the facility.

Other changes, including larger bedrooms and a new ‘Butterfly’ bereavement suite, will also be unveiled to the public for the first time next Monday at the centre.

New defibrillator

Powers on education and transport could be inherited as part of the move, with member for Eastrop Cllr Gavin James calling for the borough council to back the proposal.

He said: “Carrying on as we are right now, given the challenges faced by the cuts, is not an option.

“I’m absolutely in favour of devolution, I’ve been calling for it for years, and this will give us a wonderful opportunity for change.

“We’ve seen the problems caused to the buses and other services because the borough doesn’t have a strong enough

voice and this would help with that.”

A letter had been drafted to secretary of state for communities and local government Greg Clark on the issue before last night’s meeting, but will now be altered depending on the views raised by the full council.

But while a government deadline for submission of proposals has been set for this Friday, Brookvale and Kings Furlong councillor Jack Cousens has urged caution on making a rash decision on the matter.

“I’m certainly in favour of giving local people a say in what services they want as it is local

people that will feel the affects of it, whether good or bad,” said Cllr Cousens.

“Are we encouraged by the fact that the borough council might have more control on certain aspects?

“Yes, of course, but ultimately I’d urge caution because we need to make sure that it would actually be in our best interests and that we do a good job as a result.”

BASINGSTOKE: More than 300 local performers will take part in the Basingstoke Variety Show next month in aid of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal.

Acts will include students from Lisa Beaumont School of Ballet, performers from the Basingstoke Gang Show and Gaiger Trust winners Kimberley Archibald and Isabelle Kersley.

Variety show

CCTV images have been released of a man and woman wanted by police in connection with the theft of over £2,000 from an elderly woman in Basingstoke.

The 88-year-old victim was targeted as part of a distraction scam in Festival Place shopping centre at around midday last Thursday.

A total of £2,300 was stolen from the woman’s bank account in a prolonged theft that saw the perpetrators fi rst take note of her pin number during an ATM transaction and then steal her purse.

Cash and bankcards were also stolen from the victim’s bag while the suspects were distracting her – resulting in the cash being withdrawn from

He didn’t charge me extra and even finished after they should of closed.

Corn Exchange curtain rises HAVE you ever been to a scarecrow’s wedding?

Well your invitation is out as Newbury’s Corn Exchange opens after a £100,000 revamp with ‘The Scarecrows’ Wedding’ this weekend.

The children’s book, by ‘The Gruffalo’ author Julia Donaldson, will be performed by Scamp Theatre Company on Saturday, September 5, and Sunday, September 6.

Actress Muireann Bird told the Observer: “I think there’s a real sense of joy with children that isn’t always guaranteed in other forms of theatre.

“Children come with an openness and willingness to believe which is really wonderful, and live theatre is absolutely unlike anything else.

“It’s a shared experience that is different every time and it’s just magic!

“I also think our show in particular allows the audience to really use their imagination, and I think that can only have a positive effect in the children’s life as a whole.”

The production comes to Newbury on its fi rst stop after a successful run of shows at this year’s Edinburgh Festival.

However, when the farmer (Paul Brendan) replaces Harry with another scarecrow in Reginald Rake (also Paul Brendan), can Reginald persuade Betty that he is the scarecrow for her?

“It’s defi nitely a show for the whole family!” Muireann said.

“I’ve had plenty of friends without children come to see the show and really enjoy it.

“I think the music is really lovely so that’s certainly something for adults to enjoy. It’s a very simple, truthful love story which is a universal theme.”

She added: “It’s always a joy to work from strong source material.”

“There is also a responsibility to doing her story justice.

“She has seen the show and loved create work which is true to the origiit, so thankfully that appears to be nal story.

“Julia Donaldson is such a brilliant the case.”

Four piece party group to light up Newbury Festival FOUR-PIECE cover group Hennessy will be kicking off this year’s Newbury Real Ale Festival on Saturday, September 12.

The Basingstoke-based band, made up of lead singer Shaun Hennessy, guitarist Mark Brookes, Chris Brookes on the bass and drummer Graham Bartholomew are performing at the annual festival for the very fi rst time.

an audience that appreciates our music is seeing people enjoying themselves,” Shaun said.

“And you’ve got to practice as much as possible. Get involved in different styles of music and if you play covers,

choose songs for the audience and not yourself.”

Away from music, Shaun works as a self employed builder, Mark is a video conferencing senior engineer, Chris works in training and Graham is a manager for a music licensing company.

The current line-up was established four years ago, with the foursome performing a repertoire of well-known

songs from a range of genres.

From what’s currently in the charts, to good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll, the four friends will play tracks from the likes of Avicii, Black Eyed Peas and Johnny Cash, with a whole lot more on their song list.

And with the band booked in for a few more gigs until the end of the year, lead singer Shaun hopes that their debut performance at next Saturday’s festival will be a success and will build up the group’s publicity.

“On Saturday, the audience can expect a lively set designed to get people of all ages dancing,” Shaun told the Observer.

“And it doesn’t matter which genre of music you prefer, as experiencing it live is always the best way to embrace it.”

Tickets for the festival cost £10, and Hennessy will be on stage from 12.15pm to 1pm.

The arrival of the ‘65’ registration plate will trigger the September sales spike, as eager buyers of the British brand’s luxury sports cars take delivery of their new models.

Leading the charge from the Buckinghamshire showroom this September is the arrival of one of the fi rst new Vantage GT12 sports cars to be handed over to a UK customer.

With production strictly limited to just 100 cars, the Vantage GT12 special edition draws on all of the brand’s learning from years of top level motorsport competition around the globe.

It is equipped with a new iteration of the Aston Martin 6.0litre V12 engine and is capable of generating up to 600 HP making it not only more powerful but also 100kg lighter than a standard V12 Vantage S. Significantly restyled, as well

Strong batting but just a draw for Falkland CC FALKLAND Cricket Club could only manage a draw with Wokingham at the weekend after both sides put in some impressive batting displays as each passed the 200-run mark.

Wokingham batted fi rst with opener Jake Turner (103) getting a century, while Eamonn Vines (15) and Simon Myles (63) saw the visitors pass 200 runs with only two wickets lost.

They fi nally declared on 263-6 after 48 overs to set Falkland a challenging target to try and overcome.

And the hosts’ reply got off to a good start as Will Langmead (47), Bruce Martin (43), Hamza Riazuddin (40) and Mark Abrams (31) got Falkland past 200 for three wickets.

But with the overs running out, they set a fi nal tally of 229-7 to ensure the draw.

The result leaves them seventh in the Thames Valley League Division One standings, with just an away match against Marlow left to play on Saturday.

Richardson in the ring for title fight THATCHAM boxer Bryan Richardson will be hoping to seize the regional middleweight title on Saturday in a grudge match between him and current champion Ben Davies.

The 33-year-old West Berkshire fighter, also known as ‘The Pitbull’, will encounter Davies for a second time after their fi rst fight ended prematurely.

A clash of heads opened up a nasty cut above Richardson’s left eye, forcing the clash to be halted in the fi rst round.

Racecourse launches prize for best jockey A NEW award that sees the most successful apprentice jockey at Newbury this season earn a cash prize of £1,250 has been launched.

Newbury Racecourse has teamed up with Conundrum Consulting to offer the prize to the jockey who rides the most winners through the 2015 flat season.

The runner-up will receive £500, with a presentation of the award due to take place at Newbury on November 27.

Currently leading the way is Patrick O’Donnell with three wins and one second, while Louis Steward and Danny Brock both have two wins apiece.

Eight more apprentice jockeys have earned one win each,

made up of Rob Hornby, Tom Marquand, Philip Prince, Cam Hardie, Megan Nicholls, Rob Fitzpatrick, Georgia Cox and Eddie Greatrex.

Thatcham conceded twice in the fi rst half, but staged an impressive fightback as they snatched a home win in the dying moments of the match.

The hosts got off to a bad start as Mark Hughes suffered a head injury, forcing Jordan Seward to come on as an early substitute.

Thatcham are now third in the table with 15 points, level with Flackwell and second-placed Highworth Town.

The result followed Thatcham’s success in the preliminary round of the FA Cup on Saturday, where they beat Guildford City 3-2.

Guildford had taken the lead, but the Kingfishers equalised quickly as Mealing thundered a header into the net.
