BASINGSTOKE’S tip is to remain open after the county council opted not to shut any of Hampshire’s Household Waste Recyling Centre’s (HWRC) on Friday.

The future of each of Hampshire’s 24 centres was put on notice in March as the authority discussed the possibility of shutting down up to 12 as part of council cuts.

But following a 10-week public consultation, which saw the majority of the 12,000 residents who participated reject the idea, Hampshire County Council has elected not to close any, including Basingstoke’s HWRC in Wade Road.

Instead, the executive member for environment and transport, Rob Humby, has decided that each of the centres will now close on Thursday, and reduce opening times by two hours every day in a bid to save a total of £400,000.

Speaking about his decision on Friday, Cllr Humby said:

“Hampshire’s residents told us very clearly that their priority was to keep all the HWRCs open and I am genuinely pleased that we have found a way to make this happen.

“No stone has been left unturned in finding ways to make ends meet to keep every one of Hampshire’s HWRCs open.

“The cost of dealing with waste is significant, and there is still much work to do to minimise waste individually and collectively, from our homes and at the HWRCs, and to reuse and recycle as efficiently as possible.”

Wade Road’s HWRC will now be open from 11am to 6pm until the start of next year, when the winter opening hours will see the centre shut at 4pm each day.

THE ability to inspire others and leave a lasting legacy behind when you are gone is a feat that eludes most people.

But Odiham’s Robbie Keville has managed to do just that, despite being given significantly less time than most.

Robbie was only 10-years-old when he passed away from a brain tumour in February, just four years after losing mum Kate to breast cancer.

After receiving his devastating diagnosis, the youngster amazed those around him by dedicating the fi nal year of his life towards setting up children’s cancer charity robbiesrally, in a bid to help others.

The pair covered a marathon length each day for 15 days in a tandem kayak after setting off from Tewitfield in Lancashire and camping unsupported every night.

Harry said: “It was defi nitely an experience because we were so close to each other the whole time. “It was such a bonding experience and while I felt a wave of happiness and relief when we got there because it was so tough, weirdly I was sad that it was all over.�

Mark added: “It’s hard to fi nd a sport where a 52-year-old and a 20-year-old can be reasonably matched, but luckily we have a strong sense of humour in our family.�

The father and son team have so far raised around ÂŁ18,000 of their ÂŁ28,000 target, with all the proceeds set to go to Southampton Hospital Charity, who treated Robbie.

Dad Mark opted to name the challenge Robbie’s Row, in honour of his son’s wish that the names of all the fundraising events for robbiesrally begin with an R. Among those to be touched by the youngster’s personality was charity patron and TV adventurer Bear Grylls.

He said: “Robbie was such an inspiration – his love of both life and people touched everyone he met. “His spirit lives on encouraging those going through tough

News Bites Glider crash BRADLEY: Police have named a woman who died after she crashed a glider into farmland near Basingstoke.

Kay Draper, 60, of Marlborough in Wiltshire, came down in a ďŹ eld in Southwood Farm Lane, near Bradley, at around 11.55am last Thursday.

Paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) arrived soon afterwards, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no injuries sustained by anybody else on the ground by the glider, which started its ight at Lasham AirďŹ eld in Alton.

Hampshire Constabulary is currently supporting the Air Accident Investigation Board, who are undertaking an independent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Night assault CHINEHAM: A 22-year-old man was knocked unconscious as he walked through Chineham on Friday night.

The victim was walking along a footpath connecting Bowman Road and Thornhill Way some time between 11pm and 11.45pm when he was hit in the head from behind.

A sustained assault then continued, causing the man to lose consciousness and suffer a fractured cheek bone, split lip and bruising to his face and ribs.

Deliveroo riders BASINGSTOKE: Restaurant meals delivery service Deliveroo is on the lookout for riders to work in Basingstoke.

The service is due to launch next month, and is appealing to enthusiastic bicycle, scooter or motorbike riders to deliver food from more than 15 restaurants across the town to customers’ doors.

Council unites in support of borough’s EU residents BASINGSTOKE and Deane’s council has come together as one to send a strong message out to EU residents living in the borough that they want them to stay.

Each of the 54 members in attendance at a meeting of full council last Thursday put their political allegiances to one side for the night to support the motion from Basingstoke’s Labour group.

The future of the near 5,500 EU residents living across the borough was put in some doubt following the historic Brexit decision by UK citizens on June 23, with many left feeling “anxiety” as 52 per cent of Basingstoke residents voted Leave.

But following last week’s unanimous decision, a letter will now be sent from council leader Clive Sanders to new Prime Minister Theresa May, expressing the authority’s opinion that migrants from the EU should be allowed to stay in the UK. Brookvale and Kings Furlong

By Christian Wilson councillor, Michael Westbrook, put forward the motion and told the Observer that he hoped the result “sends a reassuring message to our residents”.

Speaking at the meeting, he said: “We all know someone from the EU, who does the same job as us, lives on the same street, and whose children go to the same school as ours.

“How does it make us feel that our friends, neighbours and workmates might have to leave the country?

“They are a part of our community and deserve better.”

The UK Census from 2011 shows that 5,489 EU residents live in Basingstoke and Deane – 3.3 per cent of its 167,799 population.

And the Liberal Democrats’ councillor for Whitchurch, Keith Watts, was adamant that it is a “matter of humanity and loyalty” that the people who “committed themselves” to the area should be allowed to stay.

He added: “I can honestly say that I’m heartbroken that my two great grandchildren won’t be growing up in the prosperous, influential, and open country they were born into.

“You can’t negotiate with people’s lives the way you negotiate with turnips.”

Conservative councillor for Rooksdown, Simon Bound, added: “As believers of democracy, it’s more than fair to say that we are all Leavers now, and we should all support this motion in its entirety.”

A number of hate crime incidents have been reported both locally and nationally in the weeks following the referendum, although independent Basing councillor and Vote Leave campaigner Onnalee Cubitt was anxious not to see all Brexit voters tarnished with the same brush.

She added: “I absolutely support the motion, but to accuse all of the 52 per cent who voted to leave the EU as being racist is offensive.”

OLD BASING: Police have launched a public appeal after a teenage girl from Old Basing went missing last week.

Nobody has seen 14-yearold Krysal Browne since 2.10pm last Tuesday when she was known to be at Milkingpen Lane.

She is described as white, has long dark hair, and is around 5ft 2ins tall.

Anyone who has seen Krysal since last Tuesday is urged to call police on 101.

BASINGSTOKE AND DEANE: Oakley and Old Basing will be among the next 30 communities from across the UK to benefit from a broadband boost, it was revealed this week.

Leaders clash over council shake-up

Neighbourhood plan approved for Overton CONTROVERSIAL plans to shape future development in Overton have been approved by the borough council.

Councillors narrowly voted to adopt a neighbourhood plan for the village by 33 votes to 20 at last Thursday night’s meeting of full council.

The move will see 150 new homes built across Overton, after 53 per cent of residents backed the plans in a tight referendum on June 23.

Four sites have been allocated for housing as part of the neighbourhood plan, including proposals to build 70 houses to the south of Two Gate Lane and 55 more west of Sapley Playing Field.

And after seeing such a closely contested referendum vote, councillor for Overton, Laverstoke and Steventon, Colin Phillimore, expressed his fear that the plan would cause a divide in the village.

He said: “There have been serious mistakes made that many feel strongly about and I’m afraid that this poorly constructed plan has split our community.

“I don’t want to see my neighbourhood divided, with neighbour against neighbour.

“While it says 150 houses, the minute we lose our five-year land supply, the developers will be circling like vultures.”

THE leader of Basingstoke’s council has slammed the county council for pressing ahead with a “blinkered” public consultation into plans to form a countywide ‘megaunitary’ authority.

Perry, has publicly given his backing to a proposal to replace the county council and Hampshire’s 11 district councils with one single combined authority.

For the next eight weeks, the public will be consulted on the idea, which is seen by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council as a reaction to both its plans to form a combined authority with five other councils, and a separate Solent deal for councils on the coast.

Leader Clive Sanders said: “It is sad that the county seems to have become obsessed with defending their own organisation against what they see as a threat from the Solent authorities.

“The unfortunate consequence may be serious and negative effects for the people of Basingstoke and Deane.

“Pressing ahead now, without involving or working with any other councils on a consultation, which is biased and ill-informed because of its blinkered perspective, is a waste of tens of thousands of pounds of public funds.”

The county council claims that forming a unitary authority would save more than £40million a year – although this is currently being investigated by a comprehensive study commissioned by Basingstoke’s council.

But with the results of the review expected in October, Cllr Sanders questioned Hampshire’s rush to launch a “premature” consultation.

He said: “The questions raised will only have to be considered again in a few months’ time once we have a better evidence base and a more balanced picture to put to residents.

“We have made our case to the county council but they have chosen not to listen.

“I hope they may reconsider and join with us in working towards fi nding the best solution for the residents we both serve.”

Despite the criticism however, county council leader Roy Perry was adamant that the public play a part in deciding the best way to devolve powers down from the top to local government.

“Before any changes are agreed for Hampshire, I am determined to listen fi rst and decide later – not the other

way around,” said Cllr Perry.

“We have always been a staunch advocate of the two-tier local government system and have worked to engage with Hampshire’s 11 district councils on our proposals and encourage them to join us in our consultation.

“Unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible to reach an agreement with them, but we hope that all the districts will engage with this exercise, in the interests of the communities they serve.”

Burglary charge BASINGSTOKE: A man from Basingstoke has been charged with committing a spate of house burglaries across the town.

Jonathan Martin Marney, 28, of Mill Road, appeared before Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, following allegations that he had been involved in 36 different offences in the Basingstoke area between March 7 and July 25.

He has been remanded into custody, with his case passed on to Winchester Crown Court, where he will appear via videolink on August 24.

An unnamed 28-year-old woman from Basingstoke has been bailed until September 19, after being arrested on suspicion of being involved.

HAMPSHIRE: The county council has awarded £290,000 to community organisations that help people from across Hampshire remain independent for longer.

Executive member for adult social care, Cllr Liz Fairhurst, announced last Wednesday that a £100,000 grant would be handed to Good Neighbours Support Service.

Grants of £90,000 and £100,000 will also be given to Carers Together and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF) respectively.

Cyber attack warning for residents A HOME Office-run campaign is urging people across Hampshire to always download the latest software to fight cybercrime.

Cyber Streetwise has pointed to the latest Government stats, from Ispos MORI, that reveal 68 per cent of people from the south east don’t get the latest updates for their phone and 64 per cent don’t for their computer.

Software and app updates contain vital upgrades that protect devices from viruses and hackers, and are viewed as the most important action people can take to protect themselves form cybercrime.

These can range from identity theft and fraud to cyberterrorism, with Hampshire Constabulary pleading with the public to take a few minutes out of their day to protect themselves.

Familiar face ready to cook up a food frenzy FOOD fanatics are set to be served up a treat when a familiar face leads Basingstoke’s annual cooking festival this weekend.

Around 4,500 people from the town attended last year’s Taste at the Top of Town event to learn some culinary tips from celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli.

Cancer campaign BASINGSTOKE: MP Maria Miller is backing Cancer Research UK’s campaign to reduce people’s risk of getting cancer.

Around 450 people die in north Hampshire from the disease every year, with smoking and obesity the biggest preventable causes.

The rate of deaths caused by smoking in Basingstoke and Deane currently stands at 236 per 100,000, while latest figures show the more than four in 10 diagnosed cases could be stopped by living a healthier lifestyle.

MEMBERS of the public that assault police officers should be handed a mandatory prison sentence, says the chairman of Hampshire Police Federation.

The latest statistics compiled by the federation relating to abuse suffered by police officials show that 1,118 acts of violence were recorded in the county between April last year and March.

Just over 300 of the incidents reported saw Hampshire Constabulary officers having to be treated for injuries after being punched, kicked and having their eyes gouged.

Hampshire Police Federation is one of the leads nationwide in calling for “the reality of policing� to be known by changing the way police assault data is collected.

Chairman John Apter said: “Police officers perform a difficult and dangerous job on behalf of the public, being assaulted is not just part of the job and must never be seen as such. “I know the work we have started is making a difference. “Officers feel better supported, equipment is being improved and the issue of assaults on offic-

Hampshire is one of only three police forces to have taken its data from crime recording systems, as well as from health and safety records – with the county therefore having the second highest number of assaults.

The latest stats, when put into context, amount to three different assaults on officers every day of the year, with 10 taking place on Hampshire officers on July 16 and July 17 alone.

And Mr Apter called for the Government and judicial system to do more to stop police being viewed by the public as “society’s punch bags�.

He added: “It is important the public see the reality of policing and the level of violence used against our officers. “I have no doubt that part of the reason some see assaulting a police officer as being acceptable is because of the lenient sentences often imposed. “I want to see mandatory prison sentences for anybody who assaults a public official.�

RESIDENTS from Basingstoke and Deane are set to be the biggest beneficiaries of a county council investment in adult learning.

About 15,000 adults across Hampshire will feel the benefit of the ÂŁ1.35million investment for adult and community learning provision starting from September.

Of this funding, Basingstoke and Deane has been allocated ÂŁ180,995, with the money set to be split between a range of different means to help people who are looking for employment.

The Adult and Community Learning programme will provide ÂŁ500,000 as part of ‘Hampshire Works’ – to put on free courses for residents over 19 who are in receipt of Job Seeker’s Allowance or Employment Support Allowance A total of ÂŁ500,000 will also be spent on ‘Hampshire Thrives’, which provides free English and maths courses for those without GCSEs. And ÂŁ350,000 will be used for the council’s ‘Hampshire Learns’ programme, to encourage wider participation in adult learning.

Octoberfest fun BASINGSTOKE: Hampshire Octoberfest is to return to Basingstoke for an eighth year, thanks to a large grant.

The Arts Council England have granted The Wessex Heritage Trust £35,000 for the upcoming event.

Octoberfest will take place at Basingstoke Cricket Club in Fairfields Road between October 7 and 9.

The grant enables the creators of the weekend festival to establish the Sunday as ‘Family Sunday’ with free admission for children under 16 and reduced ticket prices for adults.

A MAMMOTH cycle challenge organised by three Basingstoke friends has smashed its fundraising target to smithereens, it was revealed last week.

Gary Livingstone, Craig Killick and Rob Jones completed one of the tests on their respective bucket lists earlier this month when they cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End (JOGLE).

The trio, and Rob’s brother Bernie, from Chester, got on their bikes and took on the entire 1,000mile trip between July 2 and 12, in a bid to raise £20,000 for the Ark Cancer Centre Charity.

Director of fundraising for the charity, Mark Jones, joined the riders for the whole of their JOGLE journey across Britain as a support driver, and was quick to thank them for putting in the blood, sweat and tears to get across the line.

He said: “It was a privilege and honour to accompany the JOGLE16 riders on this journey.

“All of the cyclists put in an incredible amount of hard work.”

News Bites Image released BASINGSTOKE: Police have released CCTV footage of a man wanted in connection with an assault in Basingstoke.

An unnamed 26-year-old man was walking home along the pedestrian area outside the Crown Heights block of flats on July 2 when he was attacked.

The incident, which took place between 4am and 5am, left the victim with significant facial injuries.

Hampshire Constabulary has now released pictures of the suspect with the man described as white, aged between 30 and 40, of average build, and bald on the top of his head, with short, dark hair on the sides.

Job figure boost BASINGSTOKE: The number of unemployed people across Basingstoke has decreased by five per cent over the last month.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that 650 residents claimed Jobseekers Allowance in June, compared to 685 the month before.

A BASINGSTOKE police officer that put her personal safety at risk while on the job has narrowly missed out on a prestigious policing award.

Hampshire Constabulary’s PC Vikki Sharpe suffered a broken hand and damage to her ribs, back and shoulder after being assaulted while trying to arrest a drunk driver.

The roads policing officer stopped Innocent Fowung, of Deedmore Road in Coventry, at the side of the M3 near Basingstoke, after she spotted him driving erratically on June 18, 2014.

Fowung then began to act violently after she tried to breathalyse him, before putting her through a 15-minute assault at the side of the busy motorway as she attempted to arrest him.

Despite this, PC Sharpe managed to handcuff one of the driver’s hands to his steering wheel, and still cling on to the vehicle after he started the engine and rammed her into the side of her police car.

handed consecutive sentences of 12 and 10 months last year.

PC Sharpe’s dedication to the job was recognised earlier this month when she was nominated for an award at the Police Federation’s Police Bravery Awards at the Dorchester Hotel in London.

And after missing out on the accolade at the ceremony on July 14, PC Sharpe modestly downplayed her actions, claiming it was “just natural instinct”.

She said: “It’s what we do every day, we don’t think about it, it’s what we’re paid to do and that’s what we do.

“It was just natural instinct, it was my job, [and] it was what I needed to do. I gave it no real thought at all to be honest.”

PC Sharpe met with new Home Secretary Amber Rudd and Police Minister Mike Penning at the event, as well as visiting 10 Downing Street.

also attended the awards, and insisted that the Basingstoke and Whitchurch-covering officer was “a credit” to the force.

He said: “Vikki has never considered herself brave, she says she was just doing her job.

“This humble response is typical of police officers who shy away from praise.

“Although Vikki didn’t scoop the overall award, she is very much a winner in our eyes.

“She is a great officer who is a credit to the constabulary.”

Cyclist has phone stolen during ride A CYCLIST had his phone stolen by a motorist as he rode along a Basingstoke street last week.

The 43-year-old victim was cycling along Pack Lane, towards Oakley, at around 4.45am on Tuesday when a car pulled up alongside him.

A passenger in the vehicle then reached out and grabbed the man’s white and gold iPhone 6, which was in a holder strapped to his arm while he rode.

The impact caused the cyclist to fall off his bike and onto the verge, with the car then speeding away towards Oakley.

He didn’t see the face of the person responsible, although the victim, who did not sustain any injuries from the incident, has described the passenger’s arm as white with a sun tan.

The car used in the robbery is understood to have been a faded old-style Ford Fiesta, with distinctive black wheel arches and modified wheels, while it has been described as having a loud exhaust and a rattling engine.

Detective Constable Jo Martindale, of Basingstoke CID, said: “We believe that the offenders may be from the local area, so we would like to hear from anyone who recognises the description of this distinctive vehicle.”

Full steam ahead for Didcot Railway Centre Now recognised as being one of the leading centres of its type, Didcot Railway Centre first opened as a visitor attraction in 1967.

Peter Pan In Scarlet

This summer marks the return of the Oxford Playhouse to middle scale producing with the world premiere of the stage adaptation of Peter Pan in Scarlet, the best-selling official sequel to JM Barrie’s Peter Pan, written by Carnegie Medal and three times Whitbread Children’s Book Award winner Geraldine McCaughrean.

The book was originally commissioned by Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity to whom Barrie gifted all rights to the character and original writings in 1929. Band ready for festival debut

A MIXTURE of original tracks and cover tunes will be on offer when Kindred Spirit perform at this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fleet Beer Festival on Saturday, August 6.

Kindred Spirit are made up of Elaine Samuels (lead vocals and guitarist) Gavin Jones (electric violin and backing vocals), Emily Nash/Catherine Dimmock (flute, saxophone and backing vocals), Mike Hislop (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Alan Barwise/Chris Goode on drums, and will be performing at the festival for the fi rst time.

But this doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worry Elaine though, as the lead singer is confident that their debut set at one of Fleetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest events will go down a storm. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The musicians are all people I have discovered over time,â&#x20AC;? she revealed to the Observer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I began as a solo performer in the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90s and there have been lots of band members who Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve played with since I started playing professionally, but we recently had some changes in personnel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The current band members have to share their roles with several players of the same instrument in order for the band to be available for gigs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mostly, I actively look for the instru-

Drum talents of Lee Aaron THE Lee Aaron Band will be showing Fleet why they are one of the most popular covers bands in the south when they arrive at the Fox & Hounds on Friday, July 29 and The Faulkners Arms on Saturday, August 6.

With Lee on the drums, the 24-yearold will be joined alongside his trusty band mates in Nick Andrew on the guitar, Dick St Clair on bass and dad Barry Aaron at the two gigs.

However, being in a band to perform popular tunes from the likes of Queen, David Bowie and The Beatles to name a few did not come easy, as Lee is on the autistic spectrum and has suffered from OCD, ADHE and Tourette’s.

But after discovering his passion for drums at the age of eight, Lee has very much found his solace, and hopes he can continue to drum for years ahead.

“It was tough when I was a kid because I just didn’t fit in,” he said.

“However, when I started playing the drums people took notice of me.

“I was accepted and now I can’t imagine doing anything else.

“My mum and dad always told me that I was special because I wasn’t like the rest of them.

“They told me that the problems I had were not bad, they were good and I should use them and it was because of them that I would do good and they were right”.

The band are known for being versatile with the songs that they play, with the group’s repertoire ranging from classic rock songs to slow ballads.

And with the group regularly using audience interaction to make sure their crowds are getting a proper show, it will not be a surprise if the crowd go home happy once both gigs are over.

But for Barry, the chance to perform with his son, who has performed all over the world including in the James Bond Tribute Band, is something that he will cherish forever.

“Lee is an inspiration to all that meet him, and he is an extremely likable young man,” Barry said.

“He has shown to all that regardless of our individual problems we can harness them and make them work to our advantage and lead better and more productive lives.”

Both gigs start at 9pm and are free.

OFF ROAD: I will steer away from my normal VË +Á Wj]Ë ®wÁ ¯Ë Ì|¤^ɤåË #0-Ë ?ÄË tested – including fitted options. on-road review and talk a little bit about how the Cherokee faired off the tarmac. Actually – It did rather well. It will never beat a Range Rover – but it was pretty good I have to say. Jeep’s Active-Drive four-wheel-drive system is very good and did not really struggle in most places off road and I never once got stuck – which is great news.

SAFETY: The Cherokee also has a five-star Euro INTERIOR & TECHNOLOGY Inside the Jeep looks ok, but I just don’t NCAP safety rating which makes it get the sense of feeling cocooned. Yes class leading among the mid-size SUV it’s nicely set out – but it just doesn’t market. My test car was also fitted with the option of the ‘Technology Group’ make me think Wow! pack. Lucky number 13 as Towalski signs again Phillips’ knock not enough for Basingstoke BASINGSTOKE and North Hants’ mini-winning run was brought to an end at the hands of the league leaders despite a valiant batting innings on Saturday.

William Phillips hit a battling 89 not out as the Bountymen wracked up 238 runs at the home of Southern Premier Division 1 table toppers Andover.

But this response wasn’t to be enough as the tally fell just short of Andover’s score of 248-8 from their allocation of 50 overs to stop Basingstoke claiming a hat-trick of wins.

The visitors won the toss but elected to field fi rst – a decision they would go on to rue as opener Storm Green (51) and James O’Gorman (47) starred with the bat to help Andover to 169-5.

Only the bowling of Ryan Connor (4-56) stopped the tide after that as, but for a 28-run showing from Matt Knight in the mid-order, the hosts slowed.

Scores of 30 and 29 from openers Daniel Belcher and Craig Williamson then helped Basingstoke get their innings off to a decent start, before Phillips arrived at the crease to make his telling contribution.

But despite an impressive 38-run knock from Bradley Neal from 40 balls, the Bountymen then ran out of gas to just fall short.

Basingstoke will be looking for a return to winning ways when they are next in action at home to Totton and Eling on Saturday afternoon.

MATT Towalski has been rewarded for helping Basingstoke Bison in their hour of need by being handed a new deal at the club.

The experienced British forward became the 13th member of last season’s English Premier League (EPL) winning roster to re-sign with the Herd last week.

Towalski arrived at Planet Ice as a much-needed Christmas present for Stampede fans just before the festive period last year, at a time when Bison were suffering an injury crisis.

And after playing a key squad role in dragging Basingstoke across the line to claim their fi rst league title in 23 years, the 32-year-old backed his teammates to repeat the feat this time around.

“I love playing ice hockey and never expected to win another league title at this stage of my career,” said Towalski.

“I really enjoyed being on the team last season as they were such a great bunch of guys.

Towalski scored five and assisted three more from his 32 games after joining from Bracknell Bees, while he also passed the 600 EPL appearance mark, following spells at Milton Keynes Lightning and Slough Jets.

He also previously represented Great Britain at both under-18 and under-20 level – winning a gold medal in 2004 in the World Championships in the process.

And after already persuading forward Aaron Connolly, Tomas Karpov, Ciaran Long, Daniel Lackey, Grant Rounding, Rene Jarolin and Alan Lack to all return, Herd head coach Doug Sheppard was delighted to add another member of the offensive unit.

He said: “Matt brings to the team a wealth of experience.

“He proved last year he is very good on the PK and can slot into any line.”

Racer raring to go for BTCC return ROB Collard will look to retake the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) lead when racing resumes at Snetterton in Norfolk this weekend.

The Hook driver had a superb first half to the season – collecting two wins overall at Donington Park and last time out at Croft.

That meet in North Yorkshire took place over a month ago on June 19, with Collard’s 50th career win in motorsport seeing him close West Surrey Racing (WSR) teammate Sam Tordoff’s lead to just 12 points at the halfway mark.

Rewind back even further to May 8 at the 47-year-old’s home track at Thruxton however, and

he actually sat at the top of the pile, although Collard refused to think too far ahead about claiming a fi rst BTCC title.

He said: “It feels like an age since the last race at Croft and everybody’s had plenty of time to think about how to approach the second half of the season.

“In previous years we’d talk about some tracks being better than others for the BMW, but this year the 125i M Sport has been strong everywhere.

“We’re in a very strong position as a team at the moment, but we can’t really think too far ahead in terms of the championship.

“We just have to take each race as it comes.”

Sport Bites Challenge games ICE HOCKEY: Basingstoke Bison will once again line up against fierce rivals Guildford Flames in September as part of their pre-season schedule.

The two sides regularly face each other before the start of the season, and the same will happen this year with Bison hosting on September 3 at 6.30pm, and a tie taking place at the Spectrum the following evening at 6pm.

But in a change to last year’s schedule, the Herd will also face a double-header with the Swindon Wildcats.

Bison will travel to Swindon to play at 7.45pm on August 31, and then host their EPL rivals at 7.30pm on September 7.

Fourth major GOLF: Justin Rose will hope for better luck than he’s had so far this season when he competes in the final major of the year, starting today.

The north Hampshire golfer goes into the PGA Championships in Springfield, New Jersey, after failing to challenge in the last two majors.

Rose’s chances at The Open Championship in Royal Troon were ruined two weeks ago by the weather, while he fared significantly worse at the US Open as a back injury saw him miss the cut.

BASINGSTOKE Town fans had double reasons to be happy over the weekend as they earned an impressive win in their penultimate home game of pre-season.

Goals from George Bennett, Aaron Jarvis and trialist Jordace HolderSpooner handed ‘Stoke a 3-1 win over Reading U21s at the Ark Cancer Charity Stadium on Saturday.

And just hours later manager Terry Brown announced three new signings in former Fulham U21 striker Aaron Redford, midfielder Michael Atkinson, and his brother Robert, who plays in defence.

This came after Alex Tokarczyk’s arrival from Scottish Championship side Falkirk three days earlier.

And Brown then took his number of new signings up to 15 yesterday, as left back Tamille Roache also joined from Barnet to aid Basingstoke’s preparations for life in the Evo-Stik League Southern as a full-time side.

After stretching their unbeaten run in pre-season to four games against Reading, Town’s new look side appear to be gelling well on the field, as they try to bounce straight back to the National League South.
