THIS year’s CarFest was the “biggest and best yet” according to BBC Radio 2 broadcaster Chris Evans. The family car festival was a huge success with 20,000

It places the town a and borough 11th out of more than 7,000 places evaluated. collects and comThe survey collec pares data on aver average weekly incomes, crime ra rates, health stats, home ownership owners and economic activity. Mayor of Basingstoke Basings Roger Gardiner said: “It is nice to hear that Basingstoke and an Deane is recognised as being a prominent area. “It is very good to see the economic ranking in the survey, and its place in the table is a nice reflection of where Basingstoke should be.” It means Basingstoke could be one big step closer to burying its 2003 ninth place title in Crap Towns: The 50 Worst Places to Live in the UK. Last year the town dropped out of the list in the 2013 edition Crap Towns Returns. Basingstoke and Deane borough councillor Jane Frankum, of Popley West ward, said: “I remember that label and I think it was undeserved. “People have fi nally woken up to what a great place Basingstoke is.” The index published last week, compiled by The Daily Telegraph, surveyed between 2,000 to 6,000 households in each of the 7,137 areas. Of the five variables used to calculate the rankings, Basing-

stoke was strongest for its economic activity - in which it was rated ninth out of 7,137. Economic activity was measured by the percentage of people aged 16 to 74 working or looking for work a week before the last 2011 census for England and Wales. It came 14th for the average weekly income of residents, for health it came in 76th place, for crime it was 509 and for home ownership, Basingstoke came 1,353 out of 7,137. Basingstoke and Deane borough councillor Seán Keating said: “I am not surprised because it is genuinely a good place to live and there are a lot of services and facilities available here that are not available in other towns.” Clive Sanders, the leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, said: “Obviously it is very pleasing to see Basingstoke and Deane ranked 11th best place to live in England and Wales but it is of no surprise to me or our residents.” He added: “Basingstoke and Deane has so much to offer with a thriving economy and low unemployment, great shopping and renowned leisure, culture and sporting facilities and attractions.
